with the most beautiful and exotic plants. In the past, I’ve left there with more than a dozen. The space is a great escape from the world.”

Banele’s The Steel Tree today towers above the General GL Pitso TRT station in Sunnyside where he lived before moving to the suburb of Queenswood almost a year ago.

Banele also visits Queenswood Florist every week. “Just to check up on what’s new so I can update my bedside.”

“I found a north-facing apartment in Queenswood and it felt like I was leaving winter in Sunnyside and moving to summer,” says Banele, who grew up in a small town called Hlatikulu in Swaziland. “It’s actually the size of Queenswood.”

A Jacaranda tree from his childhood years inspired the piece he designed for the A Re Yeng initiative. The tree’s sense of individuality and the way it sprouted without any human intervention fascinated him. However, the tree's beauty was spoiled when someone cut off a few of its branches. With The Steel Tree Banele endeavoured to give the tree of his childhood its beauty and integrity back.

As a successful artist and a lecturer at Tshwane University of Technology Arts Campus, Banele has a busy life. “I’m constantly on the move, but I slow down once I’m in Queenswood. The neighbourhood is calm throughout the day. Here the weekdays are the same as the weekends. It’s tranquil and the peace is such a luxury to a busy mind."

Banele is a strong contender in prominent art competitions such as the Barclays L’Atelier Art Competition, Thami Mnyele Fine Art Awards and Sasol New Signatures. He was awarded the SA Taxi Foundation Art Award this year. "It includes 10 taxis that will carry my work through the South African roads, and a cash prize."

The serenity of this established treelined neighbourhood in Pretoria’s Moot area helps Banele stay focused. He spends most of his time working on his art at home “and rearranging my collection of 45 plants”.

People from all walks of life form an integral part of his life in Queenwood. “The people I’ve got to know in Queenswood are so kind and I have made genuine friendships with them. They’re also respectful of each other as there's minimal crime and it feels like a safe environment that one could settle in,” says Banele.

Kilnerpark Nursery is one of Banele's favourite places to visit. “It’s a nursery

passion for clean and healthy living was ignited while I was pregnant with my first child over 15 years ago. At the time, we were living in London, where there was already a big movement towards a more natural and organic way of living. When we came back to South Africa, I identified the need for bringing different aspects of healthy living together under one roof, harnessing and leveraging various holistic skills and expertise and giving the customer credibility, value, great service and convenience.

Pure Living in Brooklyn is a one-stop shop for all your natural health and wellness needs WORDS: ZENA LE ROUX

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Brooklyn is a semi-residential and very dynamic suburb in Pretoria East, with a high concentration of schools and businesses in and around the area and a mix of local and foreign residents.

P

ure Living is a health and wellness hub with a strong focus on healthy lifestyle management and support. From its diverse mix of in-house health practitioners to the health boutique, educational talks and healthy catering, Pure Living takes pride in its clean, natural, ethical and eco-friendly approach to a healthier lifestyle. Owner Maya Moniodis tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: I guess, like many moms, my

Q: How did you find your premises? A: We had been looking for the right premises and location for about a year before finding this property by chance. We were determined to stay away from an indoor artificial environment and really wanted to have some outdoor space with trees and natural greenery. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: With Pure Living situated in Justice Mahomed Street (formerly Charles Street), it makes our health hub easy to find and very accessible.

Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: It’s all market related and driven by supply and demand. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: Our shop footprint varies from day to day and is growing steadily. Our busiest days are Wednesday and Thursday, when we receive delivery of our organic fresh produce, healthy breads and baked goods. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We're in the process of final planning and setting up of our green tea garden and online shop. Once all is well settled, we would love to take our concept to other locations. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Currently, we have an informationbased website, but we’re in the process of upgrading to an e-commerce platform. So we'll soon have a fully operational online shop too. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: At the health boutique, our best-selling products are the healthy breads and the organic fresh produce, followed by our range of natural and biodegradable cleaning products.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Residential owners, a dentist and a chiropractor.

Sunny-side up Add value to your home with a breakfast nook WORDS: ANDRÉ FIORE

18 JUNE 2017

PROPERTY NEWS

T

he heart of the home, the kitchen, is no longer just a place where food is prepared; it’s also a source of warmth in winter and often a natural congregation point for family and friends.

IMAGE: ISTOCK

Welcome, then, the breakfast nook: a multipurpose area that quickly becomes a morning coffee spot, a homework station, an intimate area for candlelit dinners and a place for an after-work sundowner. Many kitchens seem simply too small for a breakfast nook, but if there’s space for even the smallest of tables, there’s space for a breakfast nook. Think out of the box; your space may be tucked under a window, in a corner, near a door, in a passage or around a central island. If space for a breakfast nook is very tight, consider a bench on one side to free up space. It can be tucked underneath the table when not in use. Or opt for storage ottomans that can be tucked away or even used in another room as sidetables or extra seating when not needed in the kitchen. Choose chairs that blend into the background – metallic, chrome and Lucite items almost disappear, which is a big win in a tiny space. An adjustable table can double as a work surface, or a flip-out table can fold up or drop down against a wall when not in use. Fold-away chairs can be stored elsewhere or you can simply pull up a chair, or two, from somewhere else when extra seating is needed.

5

If you have a long, narrow kitchen, keep the breakfast nook against the wall and also use it as a computer and charging station. Centralise the space with an oversized artwork or rug, rather than bulky furniture. Add a Venetian-style blind so you have privacy and a view. Make the most of your warm and welcoming kitchen this winter with a nook of your own.

KITCHEN TRENDS TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING YOUR BREAKFAST NOOK: • Colourful appliances: sparked by Smeg and KitchenAid, colourful statement appliances are stealing the show. Don’t hold back from making a statement. • Black is back in the kitchen: black taps, light fittings, appliances and stainless steel are all popular. You can create a timeless, sophisticated look for your nook. • Wallpaper: making a bold appearance in the kitchen, wallpaper is great for defining an eating area. • Glass walls: to embrace nature and eliminate indoor-outdoor boundaries, consider using a glass wall to take your breakfast nook alfresco when the weather’s right. • Tiles: mixed, matched, punchy tiles are increasingly popular and create a casual, family-friendly vibe.

Kindlewood and Izinga developments sold out

indlewood and Izinga, two residential developments north of Durban, are sold out, according to Mondli Msani, development manager, Tongaat Hulett Developments.

technologies evolved together with Kindlewood and Izinga. Features such as water recycling and solar energy were incorporated.

“These developments are the realisation of that vision which seeks to actively encourage integration of urban and natural environments where each element reinforces the other to provide an entirely new urban identity and way of life,” Msani says. He says that a variety of green building practices and various

The first phase of Kindlewood, a gated residential estate in Upper Umhlanga close to Gateway Theatre of Shopping and Umhlanga Ridge, was launched in 2006. Three more phases followed. The second phase went to market in 2007, the third was launched in 2012 and the fourth followed in 2014. Msani says all four were officially fully subscribed by March this year. This equates to around 600 units. Phase

1 is fully constructed while Phases 2 to 4 are still under construction. A fifth and final phase, which comprises high-end residential and retirement units, is due to launch in 2018. Izinga comprises Izinga Ridge; which launched in 2004 and includes the Indudu, Iduli, Ithafa and Iduma Estates, Izinga Park 1 and 2; and Izinga Estate. “We’ve created a new urban experience that allows residents to enjoy unique lifestyle elements with the peace of mind that only a secure gated community and well-managed residential estate can provide,” he says.

choose a gated residential estate when buying residential property. South Africa has close to 7,000 freehold and sectional scheme estates with around 355,000 active residential properties‚ valued at R800bn.

The gated estate sector declined in the late 2000s, partly due to the economy and oversupply. However, the benefits associated with this type of living have meant the sector is experiencing a renewed boom.

“We have noted an increase in demand for gated estates, particularly in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, and as developers we must respond and anticipate market requirements,” says Stuart Chait, executive chairman, Land Equity Group, a privately held property investment, development and private equity company.

According to research by market intelligence company Lightstone Property, one in 10 South Africans

Our statistics show that buyers aged 20 to 30 are paying an average deposit of around R90,000, which puts their average bond at R682,000 and their average monthly repayment at just over R6,800. Buyers aged 50 to 60, however, are paying an average of R388,000 as a deposit, which takes their average bond down to R949,000 and monthly repayment to R9,475, or possibly even less if they’re able to negotiate a preferential interest rate. Secunda gets first retirement village

Luxury gated estate living on the increase in the Western Cape esidential property developers have turned their attention back to gated security estates as home hunters are increasingly in search of the security and lifestyle elements offered by such estates.

The power of home equity for older buyers

In 2004, Land Equity began development on Stonehurst Mountain Estate, a 100ha gated estate in Silvermine, Tokai, Cape Town. Today, the R410m development has over 300 homes, with more phases planned due to increased demand. “There are currently a number of other gated estates in the development phase in the area including Chapman’s Peak Estate in Noordhoek and Constantia Nek Estate, with a number of retirement villages also under construction. Many of these are already sold out,” says Chait.

S

ecunda will soon have its first retirement village. Billy Fick, licensee, Seeff Secunda, says that this is a most welcome addition to the property market. The new retirement development, Terra Nova Retirement Village, is currently being built and the first occupations are expected towards the end of 2017, says Fick. The village will include a Curro-Health sub-acute hospital, medical assistance, dining hall with daily meals, functions hall, library, gymnasium and more. There are one-, two- and threebedroom properties to choose from.
