This year, The Finery Fair will be hosted at Kievits Kroon Country Estate, which is primarily a conference centre, but is also referred to as the winelands of Gauteng. The venue is tranquil and lush and you cannot help but feel enchanted when you’re on the grounds. Kievits Kroon is located in Pretoria, yet you’ll feel like you are a million miles away from the city buzz.

What to see

This spring affair is going even bigger this year with 80 quality Finery Makers, who will sell a variety of products from

leather, jewellery, clothes, a range of children’s products, body products, pottery, decor and more. During the course of the weekend, there will also be theatre productions, craft workshops, an art exhibition and a great line-up of bands. The line-up includes newcomer Kate Rok, Silver Creek Mountain Band, Bottomless Coffee Band (fresh off their European tour), Suzzi Swanepoel, and blues master Gerald Clark. Georgetown Band will end off the weekend’s celebrations. Theatre productions include Monopoly, an Afrikaans tragi-comedy, and Kiu, which is the Swahili word meaning “thirst”, starring award-winning actor and director Mduduzi Nhlapo.

The Finery Makers corner is the newest addition to The Finery Fair 2016 and includes entertaining workshops for the curious mind. On Saturday, Crafty Cultures will hold a workshop on how to make mozzarella at home. On Sunday, it will be host to The Art of Fermentation. On Saturday, Distillique will present a workshop on how to make your own whiskey at home, and on Sunday, how to make your own gin at home.

rt has played an important role in society for thousands of years. Not only does it adorn our walls and spaces, it comments on the issue of identity within the environment we find ourselves in. This year, a hundred unknown artists got the opportunity to showcase their work at the Sasol New Signatures Competition.

Sasol New Signatures

This is the 27th year that Sasol has been the major sponsor of Sasol New Signatures, and every year the organisers go to great lengths to improve and grow the competition focusing firstly on sustainability in terms of career advancement and education. This year, feedback sessions have been introduced for entrants who were accepted and those who weren’t. The runner-up was Paul Marais from Stellenbosch with his digital video Delicates, which explores a post-apartheid South Africa. Merit award winners included Matilda Engelblik from Pretoria, Shaun James Francis from Joburg, Mosa Anita Kaiser from Grahamstown, and Zane Wesley Lange from Port Elizabeth.

Cape Town-based artist Zyma Amien was crowned the overall winner with her work Paying Homage. It is with great passion and emotion that Zyma speaks about her work. Her work pays homage to her mother and grandmother who worked in the garment and textile industry and never got to enjoy the fruits of their labour. Zyma tackles important issues such as exploitation and minimum wages for workers locally and internationally. She hopes that her work will shed light on the emotional, physical and economical wounds the fashion industry inflicts upon not only the workers, but also their families.

All shortlisted artworks, along with 2015 winner Nelmarie du Preez’s solo exhibition, will be exhibited at the Pretoria Art Museum until 9 October. If you are not able to visit the museum, don’t fret. Sasol New Signatures has introduced the first of its kind in South Africa: a 360° virtual tour of the gallery on the website.

he start of spring usually inspires me to tidy up. Sometimes, though, I get stuck on where to begin and how to execute my plans. When I heard about the KonMari Method, I was intrigued and decided to look into it further.

First things first

Developed by Japanese organising consultant and author Marie Kondo, the method is changing the way people think about home organisation. Here are a few of her tips on how to approach decluttering your space.

Sort by item

When you’re struggling to decide what to keep and what to get rid of, Marie suggests that you ask yourself one simple question: “Does this item bring me joy?” This is an effective way to judge whether you need the item or not. Marie advises that you declutter by item and not by room. For example, take all your clothes and put them in one pile and sort them from there. Pick up each piece and ask yourself if it

brings you joy. If you hesitate, then the item doesn’t bring you joy and should be donated.

All at once

Marie suggests that you tackle your clean-up procedure all in one go. It might take a bit more time, but you will be more dedicated to the process if you do it all at once. In the end, it is better to have fewer items that you love as opposed to many that you like.

lon Sachs, co-owner, Mobelli Outdoor Furniture, opened a new Pretoria showroom at the Menlyn Piazza. We chat with him to find out more. Q: How did your business start? A: Mobelli Outdoor Furniture was born out of my frustration with the high prices and poor offerings of outdoor furniture. I was searching for the perfect sun lounger for my Cape Town home and either it was too expensive, unrealistically priced or the furniture

Neighbourhood was such low quality it was coming apart on the showroom floor. My brother Aviv and I agreed that there must be a better option for people to enjoy beautifully designed, goodquality, decently priced furniture, requiring little maintenance that looks good in years to come, so Mobelli Outdoor Furniture was born in September 2006. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Pretoria has the best weather for outdoor living in the country so we wanted to ensure prospective clients wouldn’t have to travel from Pretoria to Joburg to see and feel our products. The Menlyn location was brilliant because we could have a well-sized premises in a wealthy suburb which is also a central business district. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I consulted with many of our loyal interior decorator customers who live in Pretoria who suggested either Brooklyn or Menlyn as a best possible location to set up the showroom. I drove around Brooklyn and Menlyn and eventually stumbled across our current premises which was occupied by another furniture shop. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The size and location of our property is key as our property is well-sized at 1,032m2 and is in one of the busiest areas in Pretoria. The showroom has high ceilings and lots of natural light entering the property allowing customers to get a real feeling of what the furniture will be like in their homes.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: A collection of restaurants, including News Cafe and Cubana, is located at the Menlyn Piazza, and Menlyn Park Shopping Centre is situated across the street. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Rentals are around R180/m2. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: The Mobelli Outdoor Furniture showroom in Pretoria is quite new, but already has seven people coming in a day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Opening the showroom in Pretoria was the beginning of our expansion. We will have more shops in other major centres in the near future, so people can feel the quality of Mobelli furniture and learn about our philosophy of enjoying great quality furniture that is easy to maintain. Lessons from Brand Pretorius I

n 1997, McCarthy Limited was a blue-chip listed company that traded at R21/share. By 2001, the share price had collapsed to 18c. The company that employed 15,000 people was technically insolvent. It owed eight banks a cumulative R1,5bn. In this turmoil, the man responsible for turning things around was the CEO, Brand Pretorius. And his success in doing so has made the soft-spoken, but steel-nerved Free Stater an icon of South African business. A more unassuming hero one is unlikely to meet, but the manner in which Pretorius ultimately saved the company and saved thousands of jobs has attained legendary status. This is not because of some remarkable idea or brilliant innovation, but actually quite the opposite. He went back to the very basics of why anybody does anything. For Pretorius, the key to sustainable success was that you had to stand for something. Whatever decisions were made in the company had to be based on a set of principles and values. In his own words, this is how this realisation came about: “Many years ago somebody said to me, ‘Do you have clarity regarding the principles you stand for?’ That made a big impression on me, and late one night I sat in my study and developed my own personal code of conduct. I listed the principles I believe in and stand for. “That is the best one hour I have ever spent, because thereafter whenever I had to do an assessment of my own behaviour or make a difficult decision, I revisited those principles and values that I believe in and anchored my behaviour on them. It was Malcolm X who said that should you not stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” Pretorius went to the extent of keeping this code of conduct in his desk drawer so that he could refer to it at any time. If he ever had any doubt about doing anything, he would check how matched he was against these principles and values and use that to guide him.

McCarthy is now part of the Bidvest Group, and has an annual turnover of more than R20bn

There is no question that right now South Africa is in desperate need of more men and women like Pretorius, whether in business or the government – people who can offer principled leadership. As Pretorius has shown, the less you think of your own selfish interests and the more you consider the values you should be standing for, the greater the benefit – both personally and for those around you.

Elections improve buyer sentiment

I

n the 3rd Quarter FNB Estate Agent Survey, agents point to local government elections having improved consumer sentiment, although they are not seeing a stronger housing market just yet. John Loos, household and property sector strategist, FNB Home Loans, says, “We saw business confidence in the residential industry (which is not the same thing as the housing market) being strongly buoyed by the outcome of the early-August local government elections, at a time

when nothing very exciting appeared to be happening in the actual housing market itself.” Loos says it’s reflective of the importance of the local government for the smooth functioning of the property market. If there is an expectation that a local government change will bring about better service delivery, this would understandably buoy confidence among many property industry players. He said that in those major metro regions where

local government change had taken place, the perceptions of the agents regarding positive consumer sentiment were stronger than those where it was business as usual. In eThekwini and Cape Town, only 9,1% and 10,7% of agents respectively cited a successful election outcome as boosting consumer sentiment. By comparison, in Tshwane, 45% cited this driver of consumer confidence, in greater Joburg 27,5%, and in Nelson Mandela Bay the estimate was 36,4%.

Market activity always highest in spring and summer

T

here are pros and cons for selling your home in any season, but market activity is invariably highest in spring and early summer, says Tony Clarke, managing director, Rawson Property Group. “Part of this is the psychological effect of the warmer weather, but it’s also because there are a lot of new properties being listed. It’s an ideal time to think about what you’ll be

needing in the new year, and what you can afford with expected bonuses and annual increases on the way.” More buyers means more contenders for properties, and Clarke warns that spring purchases tend to be faster-paced and more competitive than other seasons. “Buyers in spring should get prequalified by a bond originator,”

he says. “This will give them an accurate idea of what they can afford, and also strengthen any offers they decide to make.” Sellers tend to enjoy this kind of buyer rivalry too, as it often means faster sales and higher prices. However, since there are also more properties going up for sale during spring, they could find themselves facing stiff competition.

From a sector perspective, we favour the mid-market, budget and serviced apartment segments over luxury and upper upscale for hotel investment. High currency volatility across the region has caused challenges to investors in terms of inflation, rising lending rates and uncertainty in investment underwriting. The pace of demand growth is disparate across the continent. As a result, hotel performance and investment sentiment across the continent has proved mixed thus far this year. Brettenwood hits R11m sales record T he Home and Country Property, the in-house sales entity for Brettenwood Coastal Estate, announced that it had recently sold a home for R11m. Outside of Zimbali Coastal Resort, only three homes within an estate in Ballito have fetched over R10m. With the recent sale in Brettenwood Coastal Estate doubling the average

estimate of Ballito property prices, and being one of the few homes to sell for R11m in Ballito, this is a clear indicator how Brettenwood has grown into one of the most prestigious estates within the area.
