Moreleta Park Former Mrs Pretoria-Tshwane and motivational speaker Busi Roberts tells us about her neighbourhood WORDS: BETSIE LOOCK-VAN DER MERWE IMAGES: RENE WALKER, SUPPLIED & GOOGLE MAPS *Map not to scale
My lifestyle is a balance of being very busy with work and other activities that are spin-offs from my time as Mrs Pretoria-Tshwane, my ministry work, as well as speaking at events that I host around the city and the country. On the other hand, back home in Moreleta Park, it’s a laid-back life with my family.
B
usi Roberts grew up in Mossel Bay. Even though she has fond memories of this beautiful coastal town and still gets to visit it because her parents live there, Busi enjoys calling Moreleta Park home since 2009, when she relocated to Pretoria with her husband. Being a fervent ambassador to the Jacaranda City, Busi was chosen as Mrs Tshwane-Pretoria for the year 2016/2017. “That platform gave me an opportunity to get involved in projects I have always been passionate about, especially girls and women,” she says.
BUSI ROBERTS
Busi is also a working mom with a fulltime job in marketing, “I have my hands full, but wouldn’t have it any other way!”
Home sweet home A key element in choosing Moreleta Park as their suburb of choice was its close proximity to everything that’s important to them. “We have great family doctors within a two-minute drive. Easy access to the R21 and the N1 is important in the mornings so we can

get to work relatively hassle-free. Both our girls were born at the hospital just around the corner from our house.” “I love our small shopping centres where you even get to know the owners’ and cashiers’ names,” adds Busi. She recalls one occasion when she went to her local pharmacy and the pharmacist commented that he hadn’t seen her in a long time. “In a time where everyone minds their own business, we still live with neighbours on all sides, whose names and contact details we know. This has come in handy on numerous occasions.” She adds that the people of Moreleta Park are as diverse as South Africa itself. “There are all races and all languages spoken around here, which is quite special.” Busi finds the neighbourhood of practical value whenever she hosts her women’s conference in Pretoria through her ministry for girls and women, called The Apple of His Eye. “I hire an amazing venue at my church and use local caterers. It’s such an easy part of Pretoria to get to, that I’ve had attendees coming from Joburg and Mpumalanga who found it with ease,” explains Busi.

Gems in the neighbourhood This family is passionate about their spiritual home situated close to their residential home in Moreleta Park.
There’s a new tiny bakery called Bakers Trio that opened near Moreleta Pharmacy on Rubenstein Road. “You need to walk slowly otherwise you might miss it,” says Busi. “In addition to their lovely freshly made breads, cakes and pastries, they make mutton curry bunny chows on Fridays that are to die for.”

“Our church, Choose Life, is such an awesome place of worship. The sense of family is astounding, with the warmest leaders and caring atmosphere. The church also offers a great kids’ programme,” she says. They love good food and Busi shares a few tips about places of food in the neighbourhood, “Elephant and Friends makes great saucy burgers. I was hesitant about this one at first, being a pub and all, and because we aren’t drinkers. But my husband walks in and brings home these fabulous burgers that are so big that we often buy two to share between the four of us.” They are also avid supporters of Simply Fish at The Village, says Busi. “They make amazing prawn and chicken curry, as well as apricotbasted snoek… really divine!”
At home, the comfort of her bedroom where she spends restful evenings and lazy mornings, and the kitchen where she loves creating beautiful food for her family, are her favourite places. “My husband loves everything I cook, and my girls and I bond over baking one thing or another, so the kitchen is a happy place. Just as our informal living area where we all squeeze onto one couch as we watch the girls’ favourite cartoons on weekends and laughter is heard all around,” says Busi. “We love having lazy Saturdays and find places where we can take our girls locally, be it picnicking in the Botanical Gardens or Rietvlei Dam. Simply take a book, a picnic basket and you’re good to go!”

Are you entertained? From music to home theatre, South Africa is by no means behind the tech times. So what’s at the top of the list? WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER
IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK
A
ccording to Warren Husband, Homemation, “South Africa is very close behind the trends set by international (tech) companies. Typically, products and solutions are available within weeks of international launch.”
Streaming services
Karl Wagner, Audio Excellence in Umhlanga, concurs, “Our industry is very current. The world has become truly global with no country dominating.”
Adds Warren, “Whether it’s movies, series or music, our improved internet infrastructure and high-bandwidth internet has opened up a whole new way to enjoy our favourites. Gone are the days of looking through old CD or DVD boxes only to find out the disc is missing... Deezer, Tidal and Spotify for the audio enthusiasts and Netflix, Showmax and even DStv are offering their content over the internet, so you never miss a beat when it comes to seeing or hearing your favourites.”
“Not a physical product, but one which gives access to huge music libraries. For a nominal monthly subscription, most music can stream into your home or be stored on a portable device for offline playback,” says Karl.
Wireless distributed music
Having your music available throughout the home is still one of the most soughtafter home entertainment solutions. “It allows for any music signal source, be it a CD player, phone, music streaming service or FM radio, to transmit wirelessly from one room to several, all controllable by a smart device. Our preferred all-encompassing product for this is Yamaha Music Cast,” explains Karl.
Turntables
“Companies like HEOS by Denon can add this feature to the home without cutting into ceilings or running cables across walls to add speakers throughout. It still offers all the features and abilities of a centralised system which is typically installed at the time of a new-build or renovation,” says Warren.
“Not a new technology, but one which proves that ultimately we are human and, like a book, some things are better if they’re tangible,” says Karl. “For a physical connection to the music which matters to us, nothing beats an LP for its artwork, linear notes and authentic sound. Turntables range from modest to state of the art, utilising modern materials and engineering techniques. For music nirvana, we love ClearAudio from Germany.”
Home-theatre systems
Today’s home-movie experience can vary from a very ordinary soundbar to a truly immersive cinema. As Karl explains, “It’s expanded from sound playing only in one plane – front to back – to coming at us from a 360º field with overhead speakers. Dolby Atmos and DTSX can position a sound accurately within a room. Quality home theatres do require the services of a specialty AV integrator like Audio Excellence.”
Bluetooth speakers
Warren says portable entertainment technology is a fast-growing segment of the market which introduces highquality audio and video experiences to a younger generation, or those who might not be purchasing larger home-installed solutions. “For those on the move, who want to take their favourite entertainment experiences with them, there are multiple solutions – headphones in all shapes and sizes for your gym session or travelling (with active noise-cancelling for planes, trains and buses), or even for high-quality audio when at home, but without disturbing other family members. Portable speakers are also being reinvented making them water-resistant, so you can bring your favourite music to the pool or beach without worrying the device might not survive the trip.”

“This feature-packed Denon amp is now the one to beat at this price.” “ We can’t wait to see how this AV battle unfolds throughout the year, but Denon’s new amp is definitely the one to beat – for now – thanks to a combination of insightful, exciting sound and a fantastic set of features.”
The WHAT HIFI Award winning AVR-X2400H is the entertainment centerpiece to help you build your perfect home theater. My business neighbourhood Paint Patterns, based in Villieria, does trendy wall patterns and textures WORDS: ZENA LE ROUX IMAGE: SUPPLIED
P
aint Patterns breathes new life into old furniture by restoring the piece and painting it in a funky way. A very ordinary piece can transform into a farm-style or modern classic just by painting it. Owner Karen Rademeyer tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: I always loved painting and saw an opportunity to turn my passion into a business. Slowly, I learned the techniques and through practise, I really got good enough to start my own business in November 2016. I called it Paint Patterns to distinguish myself from the usual paint contractor. Although we do the traditional paint techniques, we also paint all kinds of stencils and patterns onto surfaces and furniture. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: A lthough I’m based in Villieria,
the location isn’t really important as my job requires house calls. I visit the house, see what needs to be done, then either go back and paint the wall in situ, or take the furniture away and return it restored, painted and complete. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We’ve been living here for many years and working from home cuts costs, as there’s no extra rent to be paid. If I paint a piece of furniture, I can literally just roll out of bed, have a cup of coffee and I’m already at work! Also, fewer overheads make for more profit. Q: Why are they ideally suited to your business? A: A big airy space to sand, paint and keep furniture safe is all we really need. With the internet and mobile phones, your home can easily become your office. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Villieria is in the Moot area. Moot has many home-run businesses, so it feels like a community. People are friendly and there are many shop-owners who know you by name. Within a five-minute driving radius, I have access to everything from groceries to panel beating. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Rentals are reasonable. The Moot area is a popular place to live and work. It’s safe, neat and conservative and all of these factors
have led it to become really popular. Products and services, in general, are more affordable in Villieria than in the East of Pretoria. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: More or less three people make use of my services per week. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We would love to have a few more people to help with the basic painting, but for now we’re still enjoying the hands-on approach and would like to keep it small. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, Facebook (@PaintPatterns) is a great place to showcase our work. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: W hat’s trending at the moment is to restore dark-stained wooden furniture to a more natural wooden look. Also, furniture that combines wooden surfaces with painted surfaces is all the rage. Geometric designs painted on walls are also very popular.
