ou may have seen her on 7de Laan and Binnelanders or KykNet’s breakfast show Die Groot Ontbyt, but it’s her full-time

profession as a radio presenter at community radio station Groot FM 90.5 (serving the greater Pretoria area) that earned Su-an Müller-Marais

three ATKV-Mediaveertjie awards for Best Presenter at a Community Radio Station for two years in a row. Listeners enjoy her entertaining, honest, light-hearted and diverse interviews with guests ranging from SuzelleDIY to Elvis Blue during her brunch time show Su-an en so aan (Su-an and so on). It’s no coincidence that this bubbly, energetic and life-loving lady lives exactly 800m from her work in the leafy Pretoria East suburb of Lynnwood Manor.

Home sweet home Su-an’s desire to live in a homey (but organised) home and a welcoming

neighbourhood stems from her childhood memories of growing up in Potchefstroom, North-West. “We lived in a beautiful house designed by my architect dad and were raised in a safe, child-friendly neighbourhood close to everything.” After graduating from North-West University, before moving to Lynnwood Manor in 2014, the then drama teacher at Die Hoërskool Menlopark lived in a commune in Menlo Park. “It’s hard to imagine that I survived the busy, public life of a commune, but it was a joyful, almost care-free and quite cheap time of my life, shared with wonderful people like my brother and some close friends, including a very special friend who is now my husband! “When we got engaged and decided to buy a house, this one (their current home in Lynnwood Manor) stole my heart, as it has a lovely view of

the Moreleta Spruit and is situated exactly 800m from my work. When I could see the river flowing 6m from my bedroom, I was sold!” Even harder to believe, is the fact that Su-an’s husband bought the property without ever seeing it. “He had no idea what it looked like, except for what I had told him. He surprised me one Saturday morning saying we were going to house surf, but actually driving to his own property that he saw for the first time that day. He only knew which house it was because the agent and his parents were waiting outside with champagne and cameras.” The couple now enjoy being part of a secure and friendly community that they can identify with. Su-an describes the community as “diverse, consisting mostly of middle- to upper-class professional, educated, energetic and friendly people. Most of the people care for the safety and welfare of the community.” The family member that adores this area the most is their cat, Batman. “Despite the amount of love and care we spoil him with, he can’t stop himself from exploring and roaming the rich fields the Spruit area has to offer.”

SHOP: • Glenfair Boulevard: has been serving the community’s retail needs for 40 years • Lynnridge Mall: offers a vibrant shopping atmosphere and a great mix of tenants • Lynnwood Bridge: for a great mixture of exclusive stores, entertainment and dining options • Menlyn Park: built in 1979, it offers more than 300 stores • Watermeyer Park Shopping Centre: anchored by Woolworths, Clicks and Virgin Active

Neighbourhood gems At home, Su-an is often in the kitchen cooking. Other favourite spots in and around their home include “The inner court where the braai is and my plants and the winter sun are prominent, as well as my small backyard, where I can sit and unwind while taking in the rugged backdrops of my larger backyard, including the Moreleta Spruit and surrounds.” In the neighbourhood, she’s particularly fond of the peaceful, lush, nature-filled streets where she regularly jogs. “Jogging two to three times a week (before work) in the neighbourhood really makes my day. It’s almost a spiritual experience that clears my head, gets me energised for the day ahead, helps me to focus on things with eternal value and get excited about life.” Su-an also enjoys retail therapy. “I find it therapeutic to go shopping at Lynnwood Bridge or Glenfair Boulevard because walking past

all the restaurants, coffee shops and interesting exhibitions makes it feel a bit like a holiday! I always linger longer than planned.” Su-an also likes to be pampered. “Placecol Glenfair takes care of all my beauty needs while I unwind in the relaxed atmosphere and enjoy the hospitality.”

Perfect Sunday The couple usually spend their weeknights at home making food, drinking wine in front of the fireplace and reading or watching wildlife documentaries or drama series. “That’s if I don’t have a premiere, award ceremony, show or media event of some kind to attend,” says Su-an.

“We like to go away on weekends. Holidays are a big motivator for me. I love planning trips overseas or to exotic places like Madagascar or less familiar destinations in Southern Africa.” When not travelling on weekends they try to do as little as possible: chilling at home, going to church, braaiing, watching movies, visiting neighbours who have become good friends or hanging out at a nice restaurant nearby.

My business neighbourhood Square Angle Building & Renovation in Wapadrand offers a wide variety of services WORDS: ZENA LE ROUX

IMAGE: SUPPLIED

S

quare Angle Building & Renovation makes a positive contribution to the development of South Africa through big renovations, new structures, office blocks and building of homes. Owner PG Coetzee tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: Since 2016, I’ve worked for Tyron Wakefield, owner and founder of Tycon Building & Project Management. I learned a lot from him, and then decided to form Square Angle Building & Renovation with Quentin Jansen van Rensburg at the end of January. We just felt it was time. We now have dedicated teams to do the subcontract work for Tycon Building & Project Management and we also have our own projects. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: At this stage, we’re still operating from home, so it was an obvious choice as our company is still new. Currently, we’re based in

Wapadrand where all the employees meet. From here we travel to our different sites where we have site offices. We have a dedicated space at each site where we can store all our equipment and stock. But we’re planning on moving to a dedicated office space in Tierpoort soon. We found the perfect premises in Tierpoort with enough space to do landfilling and stone crushing. Q: How did you find your premises? A: At the moment, we work from my home, but the property in Tierpoort is owned by a friend and he plans on building a lifestyle centre within the next five years on his property. He mentioned it to us and we just knew that it would be the perfect fit. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: At the Tierpoort premises, there’s ample space for us to use and we’re also planning on starting a motor vehicle workshop for rebuilds and conversions on the premises – our hobby. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Our neighbours in the new premises will be Mooikloof Estate, The Hills Game Reserve Lifestyle Estate, Woodhill, Grootfontein and Woodlands Boulevard. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: A while back, the price range was quite average. However, with the huge development in Tierpoort, the prices have gone up drastically.

Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: It’s difficult to say as we usually work on ongoing projects for anything from six to seven months. We usually get around 10 new requests a week. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We’re in the process of testing soil on the Tierpoort land that will be used for filling purposes where we would like to start building our own universal lifestyle centre. We would also like to employ more staff. We realised there’s a need for jobs for people with special skills in the construction industry. Part of our future plan is to teach these people and accommodate them for a future in the construction industry. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, we have a website (squareangle.co.za) and a Facebook page (goo.gl/QUL7Mh). Q: What’s your most popular service? A: A rchitect interface, site establishment, surveys and earthworks.

Winter trends W Warm up your bathroom with a rejuvenating facelift as we head into the colder months WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK

hat makes a bathroom into the sanctuary you’d like it to be? “Lighting, comfort and functionality,” says Gareth Gee of Simply Bathrooms. “It’s one place where no one should disturb you, where you can let down your guard. So ideally you want it warm and cosy, not hard and cold.” He shares some trends he sees creeping in as we approach the winter months.

Essentials

There are certain elements which are always popular in bathrooms, like heated floors and heated towel rails. These little touches of luxury make the entire bathroom experience enjoyable, particularly in winter. Gareth suggests that every bathroom restoration should include top-quality fittings. “Don’t go cheap. Use superior hardware, so it functions well and the sight or sound of it doesn’t jar, like a loudly flushing loo or noisy taps – these elements break the calm, sensual mood which provides that relaxation.”

Accessories

Gareth says there are two distinct trends: contemporary and vintage. “The contemporary bathrooms tend to be minimalistic with sharp edges, glass and lighting. The others are more opulent, even over the top, with features such as chandeliers, plants, couches, even fireplaces.” It’s all about personal taste. He suggests a neutral bathroom shell, enabling you to vary colours

and textures for the season, without conflicting with the bathroom fixtures. “The trend towards authenticity is a strong one for bathrooms, and natural materials such as wood, stone and concrete are grounding,” Gareth says. Wood is naturally warm to the eye and touch, so it can be used anywhere in the bathrooms to give that earthy feeling, whether it’s a slatted bench or a shower floor. Well-chosen greenery can also enhance the quest for a natural feel.”

Colour

Bathroom hardware is going colourful and/or metallic. “Taps, baths, basins and accessories are leaning strongly towards colour or shine, with rose gold, pink, grey, mustard yellow, brushed brass and matte black the most popular,” Gareth says. Chrome is yesterday. Greys and blacks are still popular, but for winter, warm things up with colourful textured towels and a deep pile bathmat.

Hot hardware

For new floors, Gareth says most people choose oversized tiles, which aside from giving the bathroom a simple neutral look, also minimise the area of grout where mould can grow. Variations such as woodlook-alike tiles, are also being used. For shower lovers, it’s all about walk-in spaces with large overhead shower roses and channels, either with no glass or just a screen to keep it simplistic and easy to use.
