Die Wilgers

Horticulturist Jacques van Niekerk tells us about his neighbourhood WORDS: BETSIE LOOCK-VAN DER MERWE

J

acques van Niekerk, who manages the Safari Garden Centre, describes himself as a horticulturist with a love for everything green and natural, a passion for family and a wide interest in anything with a creative edge – be it food, design, architecture or art. He and his family live in a charming old thatched house with large trees and natural surroundings at the foot of the Bronberg. “One could say that we’re living in a forest,” he says. Jacques credits the popularity of Die Wilgers to its comprehensive infrastructure and main arteries around the suburb. “Everything our city has to offer is just a few minutes away. The topography of the land allows for the N4 highway and the busy Lynnwood and Simon Vermooten roads to pass right by with little noise pollution. The area is blessed with rich, fertile soil, making gardening easy and improving the well-being of everyone,” he says. His favourite place to wander around and enjoy special sunsets is the Bronberg south of the neighbourhood, “especially in late winter when the sky is painted into a dramatic pink-orange hue.”

But there’s more to a great neighbourhood than reliable infrastructure and pleasant places. “Our neighbours, friends and colleagues are all real people. There’s no competition to see who can amass the most earthly goods – no comparison with the neighbours. We are who we are, and we do what we do.” The community is not so small that everyone knows everything about each other, says Jacques. “Should one have trouble – for example, a burglary – you can bank on the fact that strangers will react.” He says the hands-on community policing forum, community patrols and two-way radio communication have become an example for other neighbourhoods. “We’re lucky to have the right people in charge of these initiatives who selflessly give their time and effort.” When asked what makes a house a home, Jacques says: “A house only becomes a home when people, and lots of animals, make this their place of refuge, safety and love. Home is a place where you’re greeted by barking dogs, always happy to see you, and a grumpy old ginger cat sleeping somewhere. It’s a place where you can plant, play and dream. Home is where memories and shared experiences grow old with you, and loved ones accept you for who you are.”

THINGS TO DO: • Eat out at Hooters, The Brazen Head or Ristorante L’Isola. • Visit The Grove Mall for movies, games and ice-skating. • Take the family to the Safari Garden Centre with its beautiful fish ponds, walkways, restaurant and kids’ entertainment area.

TRANSPORT PLUS: • Easy access to the N4 and N1 highways and the Simon Vermooten and Lynnwood main roads. • Hatfield Gautrain station is only 8,5km away. • The suburb is served by municipal transport services.

We have great shopping centres, schools, churches, restaurants, garden centres, nature areas and hospitals right on our doorstep

My business neighbourhood The Real Food Company is passionate about delicious, beautifully presented food WORDS: ZENA LE ROUX

IMAGES: SUPPLIED

T

he Real Food Company in Rooihuiskraal is a professional catering business that specialises in a variety of cuisines for corporate functions, private parties, birthdays, weddings and other events. Owner Estienne Ueckermann tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: A fter being in the food industry for many years, I decided it was time to do my own thing and turn my passion into a business. I’m quite specific about the standard of quality, the presentation of my food as well as the type of service

I like to provide. I wanted to incorporate these aspects that I’m passionate about into a new venture. I also like to incorporate healthy food options on all our menus, and combined all these interests by starting The Real Food Company Catering and Events. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We recently relocated to new premises in Vlakvoëltjie Avenue, Rooihuiskraal in Centurion. This is quite central, with easy access to all the major highways, which is important to the business’s day-to-day operations. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I was familiar with the area as I used to live close by for almost eight years. I've also been looking at moving to bigger premises for quite some time. So, when the opportunity arose to rent the space (my landlord is an old acquaintance), I didn’t need to think twice and jumped at the offer. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: We’re close to a lot of our suppliers, my employees’ homes, as well as a lot of our main corporate clients. Logistically, it’s ideal.

Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Our current rent isn't too high, which was also a big reason for moving to the area. Q: How many people go through your store every day? A: A s we work on a “by order” basis, this varies from day to day. Some days we offer services to only one client and other days we have five or more orders and deliveries to our corporate clients and office parks. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Definitely, we’re always looking at ways to expand. The business has grown quite a bit recently and I’d like to, at least, double our production in the next year or two. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: A ll our services, some menu samples, our standard platters with prices, pictures of what we do, as well as other information is available on our website. Q: What’s your most popular item/service? A: We do quite a lot of corporate lunches and meals for businesses in the area. This would be about 80% of our total catering done.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We’re surrounded by a lot of small businesses, schools, churches as well as big commercial developments, office parks and shops.

Junk as a status symbol One person’s unwanted goods can be another person’s treasure when it comes to decorating your home WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

IMAGE: ISTOCK

E

xperts will tell you that there are a few things you need to do to secure your financial future: pay off your debt, like credit and store cards, and be frugal. For young people moving into a new home or apartment, furniture and appliances can be costly. Buying second-hand goods is a frugal and much greener option, and once you’ve given them your touch, they can be quirky and individual. With the range of paint colours and applications constantly coming onto the market, together with the global tsunami of creative ideas available, you can curate amazing spaces. Sarah von Bargen, who runs the “Yes and Yes” blog, has this interesting take: “Buying things on the cheap keeps me from getting too emotionally attached to stuff that is, ultimately, just stuff. It’s a lot easier to sell off your belongings and head to Russia when you found your sofa on the curb.” This doesn’t mean you accept everybody’s discarded goods. You’re going to curate, not purely populate,

so design and decorate as you would with new or customised furniture. Look at your blank rooms and spaces, and accurately measure them, so that when you’re out there, you can look for furniture or appliances that will fit into your space. Think design and scale, not colours and patterns. For couches, single chairs or ottomans, reupholstering is an affordable option. Shop around for a recommended upholsterer, check out fabric offcuts and scour factory shops for fabrics. You might even consider upholstering that armchair in a few different fabrics. If cleverly done, this can result in a beautiful artistic piece. Don’t rush your purchases, rather bide your time. You’ll find the right thing. If you don’t love it, and it doesn’t fit with your end-vision, don’t buy it. Aside from second-hand shops, car boot sales and markets, requests for items on various online sites and community Facebook pages often yield wonderful items at bargain prices. Appliances, too, can be bought

second-hand and given a new look. An old off-white fridge painted black or red, glossy or matt, can look great. Blackboard paint also works well for drawings, shopping lists and message boards, and avoids the magnetfestooned look. One creative person found vintage non-functioning fridges, gave one a vinyl cartoon wrap and stencilled designs on another to create interesting cupboards in the lounge. As always, wood can be stripped, sanded, stained, bleached or varnished. But painting it can be beautiful. Choose a range of colours, and paint each drawer of a chest a different colour. Keep the body unpainted, or stain it uniformly.

TOP TIP: Keep a thrift bag. Put every duplicate item, or an unloved one, into the bag and drop it off at a charity or thrift shop. Likewise, when you buy something, or bring home a book, set another one free.
