D
id you know that the Western Cape has its own marine nature reserve? Set along the southern coastline, De Hoop Nature Reserve exists to protect the natural surroundings of this area. The whole area is something magical – picture fynbos veld, a large vlei, gigantic white sand dunes, and the sea all in one space. It’s rare to find this combination. For a family getaway this is ideal as there’s no room for boredom. Retreating to nature for a weekend restores the soul. I find it instantly grounding to get away from technology and the usual humdrum, put on my underutilised takkies and take to the dusty pathways. Being closer to nature is relaxing and makes me think this is how I should spend more of my time. Here are the things I’ll remember from De Hoop.
Well-spotted
Up early one morning we sat outside on the stoep to have our coffee and rusks. Hearing screeches from a troop of baboons we quickly hopped into the car to go and find them. What a sight to see them all just around the corner. At the same time I spotted a scrub hare darting across our path.
Things to do
Go for a walk around the reserve and be surrounded by nature and animals such as zebra, bontebok
and eland. For activities, there’s the eco boat trip, quad and mountain biking, stargazing, the whale trail, and an interpretive marine walk. Some activities are weatherdependent, so keep that in mind.
Top tip
If you can, take a dirt-road-friendly vehicle. The dunes are a short but bumpy drive from the reserve.

akeaway coffee culture has undergone an enormous growth spurt. One of the coffee bars responsible for quality coffee on the go in Pretoria is Birillo. The original Birillo opened in August 2014 nestled under the escalator at Glenfair Boulevard and is well known for its great coffee and tasteful copper and black decor. Coffee lovers would be happy to know that Birillo has now opened a new bar in Garsfontein.
The story
Reone Louw registered Birillo in 2013 knowing that she would pursue her dream of opening a street cafe-inspired coffee bar. Birillo is Italian for a pin you would use to indicate a landmark, and that is exactly what she wanted Birillo to be: a landmark for coffee lovers. With a simple and concrete business plan, her dream started taking shape. Reone’s business model is simple and revolves around providing great coffee that’s easy to come by. As things would have it, Reone’s dream became a reality and she managed to open a coffee bar and almost two years later, a street cafe-inspired coffee bar.
The people
Coffee culture is high on the list of priorities at this establishment. However, the people and the customers form an integral part of that culture. The baristas at Birillo are very close to Reone’s heart and everyone takes turns managing the bar in the hopes of them one day opening their own business. The snack and cake varieties available at Birillo (except for the muffins and cupcakes), are all supplied by smallbusiness owners who run businesses from home. A local artisan roaster who roasts from home is responsible for Birillo’s sweet and unique blend. As Reone says, “I feel that if things are going well with Birillo, it should be going well with a few people.”

ith tight schedules and so many items to tick off on to-do lists, time has become a valuable commodity. Keeping this in mind, watching the sunset as you shop for gourmet goodies may seem far-fetched. Except that it isn’t. Gareth Christie has been providing local foodies with the opportunity to do just that since he started The Stall market in 2013. As a niche food and wine market it provides a unique food experience for marketgoers.
A three-year journey
Ever since the first market at Southdowns Shopping Centre, Gareth joined forces with Leone Walker. The Stall has since added a second and third monthly event to its repertoire. The market is mainly targeted at adults; however, food lovers of all ages are welcomed by the smell of gourmet food and artisan coffee. The Stall has hosted a variety of themed markets with anything from summer markets to Christmas markets. The Stall has even
popped up at locations that aren’t part of the planned monthly markets.
What to expect
Artisan street food, craft beer, wine, vintage clothing and curated crafts make up an evening at The Stall. Live music from some of the best bands and artists in Gauteng creates an atmosphere and experience you’ll rarely find elsewhere. You can expect to see some top-notch musicians and artists perform at these events. The Stall has played host to top South African bands such as The Black Cat Bones, Tidal Waves, and We are Charlie, just to name a few. There are certainly more great acts to follow.

eople have an inherent fascination with space. As technology trends push the limits of our exploration further and further, the colours and shapes of the galaxies beyond our own start to influence design in many ways. We’ve already seen this happen in fashion, with many runways over the past few seasons drawing on a space-themed look and feel, and it’s increasingly happening in homeware too. This fascination with space is one of the things that Li Edelkoort, the highly influential Dutch trend forecaster, called out in her recent home trends presentation as a part of Design Indaba. Falling under the broader concept of circles in design, this desire to create orbits and constellations of products, she believes, will be a key trend in homes over the next few years. We’ve already seen this happening in colour trends. Plascon’s Colour Forecast for this year, for example, features the galactically inspired Discovery trend. With a combination of brights and blues, it’s a palette that references the night sky in a contemporary way. This focus on space is also filtering into graphics, with retailers like Superbalist offering prints and wall decals that use the extraterrestrial as inspiration.

Q: How did your business start? A: My twin brother (Mashudu) and I first established Lukhwareni Group in 2011 with the idea of getting into multiple business operations. The first business we attempted, with the help of our cousin Phumudzo Maumela, was in logistics where we did furniture removals. While that was still operating, we got involved in procuring and supplying electrical components to construction companies with little success. We started making furniture in 2014 in the garage of a flat we owned in Sunnyside. As our customer base grew, we moved to a house we bought in Orchards at the end of last year. The aim was to build a workshop and use the house as a showroom for our products. We are currently working and operating from there. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We thought it would be best to set up shop in the residential area The Orchards in Pretoria North, as the aim is to supply furniture to a middle-class market. This area caters for the middle-class resident. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We found the area and the specific premises via a property agent.

A: The rental is R7,800 per month. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: Between seven and 10 people visit our premises per day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We are planning on expanding our workshop by getting some cuttingedge technology machines. This will increase our production rate. When the time comes we will definitely want to set up shop in Wonderpark, Dzanani and in the Joburg CBD. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We are currently developing our website, but at this stage people usually contact us via Facebook. This is also where most of our advertising takes place. Q: What’s your most popular item/service? A: Our most popular item is the bedroom set, which comprises a headboard, pedestals and sleigh bed.
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Our target market is individuals from the middle class. The Orchards is a developing area accommodating middle- and upper-class individuals. We want to fill our customers’ homes with unique, tailor-made furniture.

Lessons from Tanzania W
hen John Magufuli was elected president of Tanzania in October last year, many analysts already knew that he would bring change to the East African nation. There was a feeling among ordinary Tanzanians too that here was a man who was going to make a break with the past. Magafuli quickly showed that he hadn’t earned his nickname of The Bulldozer for nothing. Within days he was making it clear that his promises to curb corruption and reduce wasteful expenditure were not just campaign talk. He had been in office for less than 24 hours when he paid an unannounced visit to the offices of the Ministry of Finance. At every empty desk he wanted to know who was supposed to be sitting there and why they weren’t at work. A few days later he cancelled the country’s Independence Day celebrations, insisting that they were an unnecessary extravagance. The nearly $2m that had been set aside was instead spent on expanding a congested road and cleaning streets. Magafuli also cut the Tanzanian Cabinet from 30 ministers to just 19, and then suspended foreign travel for all of them except the president, vice president and prime minister. He fired the director general of the Tanzania Ports Authority and the permanent secretary in the transport ministry over the disappearance of thousands of shipping containers. This followed the suspension of the head of the tax authority and five other officials pending an investigation into graft and tax evasion. These actions have not only made him very popular in a country that for many years has been dogged by corruption and poor governance, but have also had a tangible economic impact. The state-run Daily News recently reported that Magafuli’s anti-waste measures had led to increased tax collection. The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange is also up over 7% this year in a period when most African markets have been struggling.

Although Magafuli is not without his detractors – there are serious concerns about the recent banning of a local newspaper, for instance – he has done what every great leader has to do, and that is to instil a sense of accountability in those under him. He has set his expectations, and public officials need to meet them. In that there is a meaningful lesson for South Africa’s leaders because all of the preconditions for economic growth, such as better education, more efficient service delivery, smoother bureaucracy and less corruption, are all premised on this – government officials being accountable. That is an area where we currently fall short, and one we have to correct.

Growth in house prices in holiday towns slows further

Haigh cautions potential property buyers to be on the lookout for extensions, alterations or additions to dwellings, and to specifically request a copy of the plans of the property. “An approved plan will shed some light on the age of the property,

Agent commentary Q: Who is buying property in Eldoraigne? A: Eldoraigne is popular among buyers as it offers a variety of property options.
