outh Africa’s residential golf estates are among the best in the world. A

lthough Retro Rabbit is an antique shop, it also sells upcycled furniture. The shop’s style is known as “funtiques” and includes everything from retro and vintage collectables to “man cave” items and upcycled furniture. Leon Labuschagne, owner, tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: W hen I was in Grade 2, I bought a kist from the primary school’s groundskeeper; they were about to throw it away. I then dragged it nearly a kilometre to my parents’ house where I sanded, fixed and painted it. After I finished, I sold it and purchased another item. By the time I finished school, I had a dozen or so items. For a while, I stood in front of the Hillcrest swimming pool and sold my creations. Shortly after that, I got a shop close to where we are now and have been a successful businessman ever since.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: There were already a few established antique shops in Villieria, and we saw the potential of the area being an up-andcoming neighbourhood.

Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: Because we’re part of the Antique Route 6, people often make a day of it and visit all the shops in one go. We can get extremely busy, but it does fluctuate.

Q: How did you find your premises? A: We were bursting at the seams and urgently needed a bigger shop. Luckily there were premises for sale close to our shop. We decided to go for it and expand.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We’ve opened a second shop in Duncan Yard, Hatfield. We did this in order to connect with a younger crowd of future buyers of antiques.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Our shop is situated on the Antique Route 6. There are nine shops on the route – all of which are totally individual. Within this community, we support one another and together we draw people to the area. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We have the funkiest little stretch of neighbours: Burger Bistro, Fruit Stop, Die Tuinhoekie, Toni’s Fish and Chips Co, LFR Antiques and Grounded at Echo coffee shop. We formed our own little “dorpie”, all within walking distance.

Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have a Facebook group (goo.gl/pJY8vE) where people buy and sell items. Everybody is welcome to join the forum. We also operate from our Facebook page (facebook. com/retropta). We’re currently working on an online store platform so that we can provide everybody in South Africa with the coolest funtiques in the world. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Tables. We manufacture them in all shapes and sizes. Customers are also more than welcome to come and speak to me about their specific requirements.

F

rom a collection of bottle tops to vintage spectacles, a wedding gown and shoes, there are many fascinating stories out there about the wide variety of items that have been framed. Remember when framing something was more functional than artistic? Now the frame and its contents can be unusual, quirky, decorative and sentimental. Greg Hayes, Stepping Stone Studios, is an artist and printer who has framed many interesting items over the years. “Once, as a school fundraiser, we framed a tennis racquet, signed TV camera lens filters and sweatbands – all from the same tennis player. We printed a large photo of him and used that as the background on which to place the artefacts. We created a box frame between the backer board and the glass to allow for all this.” As box-framing has become increasingly popular, Stepping Stones can now frame flat artworks to give them a 3-D look. Greg says a variety of materials are used for the frames. “We often use recycled crating wood for a rustic effect, or reprocessed wooden floorboards. We’ve also used window frames to frame an artwork and even an old tea tray.” A carpenter’s ruler also made a superb frame for sepia photographs/memorabilia.

Modern trends favour simple frames and natural woods combined with painted edges. Greg uses kiaat, oak, beech and rosewood combined with white, black or grey edges. Most requests are for simple, minimal framing, using square frames and no mounting. “We’re using the backer board as the mount; it’s more economical. We can also attach different materials to the backer – textured wallpaper, pressed plant leaves or reed wallpaper – and put the image or item onto that. This works well when you have decor in mind because you can choose the colour of the backer to complement colours in the space. “Some objects are definitely better framed than left in a cupboard gathering dust or being eaten by fish moths,” says Greg. “Framing a christening dress or a memorable sporting shirt allows one to enjoy the piece more and conserves it from the ravages of storage. We’ve just box-framed a few of the original voting posters from 1994 with Nelson Mandela on them for the ANC. We’re also framing some old swords passed down as family heirlooms.” Greg also recently framed a painting of a tree using the wood from the tree in the painting. There are numerous considerations, but there’s little doubt that preserving memories in a creative way looks good and feels great.
