A day of discovery

I

love chocolate. I mean really love it. The 70% dark, salted kind that melts in my mouth. The taste is silky and luxurious, and not much can compare to that moment of bliss when I close my eyes and savour the heavenly taste. As a chocoholic I’m always on the hunt for new chocolatey experiences. I’d heard about the Spice Route Destination and decided it was time to visit. The Spice Route is a multiexperience concept estate set in the beautiful Paarl area. It sprouted up a couple of years ago and is the ideal family day trip with something for everyone. To start with: chocoloate! DV Artisan Chocolate bean-to-bar factory is a family-run, micro-batch chocolate producer. Sourcing cacao beans from around the world, the factory then handcrafts them into fine speciality chocolates. I suggest a chocolate tasting to get an idea of what you prefer. If you have time you can sit and take part in a more indepth educational experience. Or simply watch at the factory window to see how the chocolate is created. The salted caramel milk chocolate is divine, as well as the individual truffles (try the mint one for some dark decadence). What’s great is that the chocolate contains no artificial flavourants or colourants.

Stanley is a software engineer by day and a barista and coffee aficionado always. He has been a part of the Vintage Coffee family right from the start and is always ready to share his knowledge of coffee. If you would like to get into manual brewing, Stanley recommends buying beans and getting yourself a hand grinder instead of buying pre-ground beans. Have fun experimenting with ratios and pouring time as it’s a big part of your coffee experience. Stanley also developed the Vintage Coffee mobile app available for download from the iStore. The app explains various brewing methods, the perfect ratios and brewing time for these individual brewing methods.

Pour-over explained

Manual brewing or hand brewing has become increasingly popular over the last couple of years. The most alluring part of this method of brewing is the amount of control the brewer has over the way the coffee is brewed. Manual brewing can be divided into three categories, one of which is the pour-over. What makes the pour-over so great, is the fact that this method of brewing is the best to actually coax out the flavour and taste of the coffee in its purest form. What makes it even better is how easy it is to do at home.

The journey continues. Maybe coffee and cake at DV Cottage Cafe? Sitting outside we enjoyed the view of the enormous oak trees with playful squirrels jumping across them. There’s a large play area there which kept my little one entertained. The beauty of the Spice Route is that there’s no rush and you can simply head in a different direction if you choose. I enjoyed walking around the grounds meandering through the area from one thing to the next.

Pour-over at home

When making a pour-over you need a conical dripper device with grooves, a paper filter, a gram scale to weigh your coffee and a brewing kettle with a narrow spout to slowly pour your boiled water. The most important thing is, of course, the coffee – you’ll need medium-ground coffee. When making a pour-over it is best to first pour boiled water over the filter to warm up your pouring device and wet the filter. Make sure to have 220ml of boiled water ready to pour. Add 14g freshly ground beans and cover the beans with water. Allow the beans to absorb the water for about 45 seconds and then continue to slowly pour the remainder of the water for another 90 seconds allowing the coffee to slowly drip into your cup. The total brewing time should be between two and three minutes. For the ultimate taste experience, allow the coffee to cool for about one minute before drinking.

I suggest you pop in at the glass-blowing studio for something different. Or if beer piques your interest, the Spice Route is home to the CBC brewery. For wine enthusiasts the Spice Route Tasting Room offers handcrafted wines made from Swartland grapes. The artisanal wines also boast unique pairings like charcuterie or chocolate. With such a picturesque setting it’s hard not to linger. But even so, a day at the Spice Route isn’t enough to take in the whole sensory journey of high-quality products. We’ll have to go back! Ps. s any lover of great comedy will know, the South African comedy circuit has flourished over the past decade. With hilarious talent available in South Africa, The 6th Annual South African Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards event takes place next week, and is guaranteed to be bigger – and funnier – than ever.

Top comedian and TV director Rob van Vuuren will host the event. Originally the brainchild of comedian John Vlismas and Taffia Keight, the event has grown from strength to strength since its inception in 2011, and this year there will be the largest number of winners yet over 10 categories. With Van Vuuren at the helm, the event promises to be another hilarious variety show made up of sketches, stand-up comedy, impressionists, celebrity performances, choreography, and witty one-liners delivered by South Africa’s top comedians. In 2015, two new categories were introduced to the event: The Non-English Award and The Best Friend of Comedy Award. This year sees the addition of another new accolade – The Breakthrough Award – which will be given to any act in any category who has made a breakthrough during the course of the last 12 months. In July, this year’s first award winner was announced, with Casper de Vries taking home a well-deserved Lifetime Achiever Award to acknowledge his extensive contributions to the South African comedy scene, with a career spanning TV, film and stage. De Vries’s contemporaries then went on to

grill this comedic pioneer in traditional Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards style at Parker’s Comedy Club, hinting at the hilarity that can be expected next week. With categories including The Newcomer Comic, The Comic of the Year, and The Audience Choice Comic, the awards cover all levels of experience, acknowledging the biggest players in the South African comedy game. So grab a ticket, a drink and your funny bone, and prepare to be amused as you witness the best in comedy take home the coveted Waldo statuette. had some savings after working in London for seven years. We wanted to invest in property and we found a house with a great location and potential to convert into a guest house. The owner wanted to change the house into offices, but could not get permission from the City of Tshwane. The neighbours as well as the homeowners’ association of Muckleneuk gave us their full support and we eventually got permission from the City Of Tshwane to convert the house into a guest house. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We know the Muckleneuk area quite well, so we knew that there would be a great demand, as it is located close by the city centre as well as other businesses. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We found the premises via a family member.

uckleneuk Guest House is located close to the heart of Pretoria, the central CBD, and is conve­niently located for easy access to OR Tambo International Airport and the N1 freeway to Polokwane/Joburg. Q: How did your business start? A: We (Lizette and Colin Brazendale)

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The stand is on a corner, so this helped us with parking. One of the biggest challenges in order to get guest house rights is to have enough parking. For every room you must have one parking spot and you need one more parking spot than you have rooms. We had to have space for 11 cars. If you don’t have a driveway through, you must have 7m of space behind each parking as well. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Residential owners and an administrational office of an anaesthetists’ group.

Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: We have a 10-year mortgage from Business Partners. The council tax for our business is very high at R4,700/month. Q: What is your occupancy rate? A: Our business runs at about 65% occupancy. We are very busy Monday to Friday, but not that busy over the weekends. Seventy percent of our business comes from business people and 30% from hospital and Unisa guests. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We don’t have any expansion plans. The last time we expanded was for the Soccer World Cup in 2010. We bought the property next to us and created four self-catering units. The month of the 2010 Soccer World Cup is still our best month to date. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: A ll our advertising is done online. Seventy percent of our business comes from internet marketing and 30% word of mouth. Q: What’s your most popular item/ service? A: T he most popular items asked for are TV and Wi-Fi. We offer free Wi-Fi.
