ith gatherings being the cornerstone of the muchacclaimed Grounded at Echo cafe, it extends that sense of community by hosting Zulu Mondays – an initiative aimed at helping people take the first step towards learning a new language. David and Karolien van Berkel share more about this. Q: What can new attendees expect when joining the class? A: New attendees can expect to meet and interact with other language enthusiasts and be introduced to cultural diversity in a relaxed and fun environment. Q: What has been the effect of Zulu Mondays on the community? A: We’ve seen the popularity of Zulu Mondays rise and fall, but there has definitely been a core group of learners who have started taking ownership of this opportunity and who have been driving it forward. People seem to love the idea, and the flexibility it offers – being able to come for a few lessons without having to commit to a full-time structure.
THE TUTOR: Mthokozisi Mthethwa takes a great deal of pride in tutoring Zulu Mondays. The lessons are meant to be fun and informative and there are no tests, but students are encouraged to speak Zulu inside and outside classes by practising their Zulu phrase for the day sent to them via email. Mtho describes his most fulfilling experience as, “When they come back after a homework assignment and I can see they tried to go outside and translate and talk Zulu to other people, I feel like I’ve achieved what I’ve set out to do.”
Q: What were your goals/hopes for Zulu Mondays? A: Ideally, we’d like to see people use this opportunity to grow and converse in their non-mother tongues. It would also be wonderful to see people pursue this opportunity beyond informal, conversational lessons. Q: What has been the most rewarding experience? A: Seeing the wonderful response so far this year, and it’s been great to reconnect with Mtho, our tutor, who was also my first Zulu teacher in 2010. Q: What would help with hosting the event? A: Just turning up and joining in the fun. If the classes become too full (who knows), we might have Zulu Tuesdays as well.

he Consumer Electronics Show is one of the key forums for tech brands to show off their latest products. Held annually in Las Vegas, it’s increasingly becoming an important reference point for home innovations too as the worlds of technology and living spaces become more entwined. Aside from the expected developments in smart home technology and connected appliances, one of the key themes that stood out was the emergence of a new approach to technology, one that tries to make itself as invisible as possible. The key thing for big tech brands now, it seems, is to make the device less of a focal point and look more at the experience it creates. It’s no longer good enough to have something that’s technically advanced when it doesn’t integrate easily with the way people actually live their lives. That’s why standout items included things like wireless speakers hidden in light bulbs and electronic candles and displays that only appear when in use. A major player here was Sony, with its Life Space UX concept. Among other things, this suite of devices includes projectors that turn walls, ceilings and tables into screens, but remains inconspicuous when they’re not being used. This approach is increasingly important as technology becomes more prevalent in our homes. As the number of devices increases, people want each individual device to be less noticeable. We don’t want our homes to look like electronics showrooms, but rather just want functionality on hand when we need it.

Steady demand for Berea property in Durban

ome to some of the oldest and stateliest Victorian and Edwardian houses in Durban, the Berea also boasts a diverse selection of art deco and modern freehold homes, sectional title estates, and flats. With the excellent schools, easy commute to the city and the proximity of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Berea appeals to a wide target market. This means Berea attracts a steady stream of buyers in various price brackets, which has ensured steady growth over the years. “Property prices in the Berea have always been on the rise,” says Mahomed Jooma, sales agent, Rawson Property Group’s Berea franchise.
“Even now, with interest rate increases and other economic pressures affecting consumers’ buying power, demand is higher than supply, and properties are still experiencing growth.” Jooma says the most sought-after properties in the Berea are lock-upand-go flats, with buy-to-let investors particularly active in the under-R750,000 range (below the transfer duty threshold). “Property investment can be a good hedge against the devaluation of financial assets, which makes buy-to-let a very attractive option, especially if you can get away without having to pay transfer duty.” That said, capital growth in the Berea – and across the country – is unlikely to be as high as it was in 2015, says Jooma.

he owners of Grasslands, Dr Cornel Cronje and Marlene Greyling, decided to try something new. Instead of using the usual primary colours for decor, they chose colours and textures found in nature – white, stone, charcoal and green in order to create a fresh and natural feeling. Q: How did your business start? A: I (Cornel) was chatting to my friend Marlene and we realised that there was a need for a more sophisticated nursery school in this area, which would create a more aesthetic and natural environment for children. We don’t want children to feel trapped in the hustle and bustle of city life, because we believe that babies and toddlers develop through the stimulation of their senses and that mental and academic development are increased when it is combined with adventure and discovery. Marlene is an experienced nursery school teacher and principal. Her dream has always been to start her own school. I am more business-oriented and thought that it would be a great challenge to establish such a unique school. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We chose this area because of the amount of good primary and high schools nearby. This would make it easier for parents if they want to drop off all their children in more or less the same area.

Q: What is your shop footprint? A: At this stage we accommodate 27 children at Grasslands. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We want to keep our classes small. We don’t want more than 15 children in one class. But we can possibly expand, as the size of the school and the playground will allow it. Q: Do you operate online as well? t its Cabinet meeting on 17 February, the government made a decision to suspend the introduction of retirement reforms that was meant to happen on 1 March. Due to concerns expressed, primarily by Cosatu, the executive decided to delay things until 2018 so that more consultation could take place.

Why this all matters is because one of the real problems that South Africa faces is that we don’t save enough. At a country level, this impacts our ability to fund our own economic growth, and makes us reliant on international investment.
At a personal level, it means that most of us won’t have enough money to retire comfortably. As BDO South Africa recently pointed out, a general rule of thumb is that for every R5,000 a month you need in retirement, you need to have saved R1m. And given this reality, most South Africans don’t have enough to replace their current incomes after they finish working.
Any changes that encourage people to save more are therefore important. But perhaps even more critical is that reforms also have to encourage people not to dip into their savings before they reach retirement age. The single biggest mistake South African savers make is to take out and spend their retirement savings when they change jobs. The second biggest is to take too much of their retirement benefit as a lump sum and not secure an income for themselves. The impact that this has is significant, because many people end up dependent on the state or their families because they simply don’t have enough money to generate a decent income. These reforms should have been the first steps in addressing these issues. There is still a long way to go, particularly in educating people about their choices, but we should celebrate moves that will ultimately be to everyone’s benefit, not keep on delaying them.

roenkloof is an environmentally focused suburb for families and nature lovers. It consists of a combination of green spaces, wildlife, and heritage sites, while also boasting top medical and educational facilities. The area is conveniently situated between George Storrar Avenue to the north, Fort Klapperkop to the south, Christina de Wit Avenue to the west and Florence Ribeiro Avenue to the east. Residents enjoy the community feel of the area, and can be seen having picnics in the parks and walking or riding bicycles along the streets. The locals and Friends of the Groenkloof Nature Reserve are involved in conservation of the parks and nature reserves in the suburb and work hard to keep the area clean.
