love a bit of good news – especially when it’s about something charitable. Recently Blue Ribbon bakeries around the country pulled together and made more than 170,000 sandwiches for charity organisations. Employees and volunteers broke last year’s record by making 40,000 more

ou open your cupboard and uneven sets of mismatched glasses you’ve accumulated over the years stare back at you. Glassware is more than functional and contributes a great deal in highlighting important aspects of a drink. The correct glassware can go a long way in improving your drinking experience. Here’s why you should use the correct glass and proudly swirl your drink.

The wine glass

Wine glasses vary in size and depend on the wine you’re sipping on. Aroma is one of the most important aspects of wine, especially in red wine. You should be able to aerate red wine by swirling it in the glass. A red wine glass is usually big enough for you to be able to smell the wine closely. Stemware glasses prohibit you from placing your hand over the glass and increasing the temperature of the wine. However, the stemless red wine glass is quickly making its way into many modern kitchens. Because of its intense sweetness, dessert wine is served in small stemware with a narrow rim. Although there are various wine glasses, these basic rules apply: red wine glasses have a wider opening while white wine glasses have a smaller mouth.

The Martini glass

Martinis were originally served in cocktail glasses, but when vodka was introduced to Martinis the serving quantities increased. A Martini glass is shaped like a wide cone to give you more surface area to smell the aromatics. The Martini glass is used to serve cocktails without ice, or “up” as the method is called. No one knows for sure how the Martini glass came to be, but it is thought that the cocktail preceds the glass. The Martini glass came into being in the mid- to late 19th century. It is likely that it got its name from the Italian vermouth brand, Martini, which was founded in 1863.

The champagne flute

A champagne flute’s shape helps to keep the bubbles going for as long as possible and, since it is not as important to smell champagne, the surface area is kept small. The champagne flute is also a favourite for champagne-based cocktails. The coupe was the original champagne glass but has since become a cocktail glass for daiquiris and Manhattans. The coupe is, however, making a comeback as far as trends go this year.

apital Collective is a group of people who love Pretoria, and ever since Mareli Wassenaar put the wheels in motion, it’s been the group’s mission to make sure the capital flourishes. As a non-profit organisation, Capital Collective aims its efforts towards uplifting and rejuvenating Pretoria, especially the inner city.

The journey

It’s been nearly two years since the birth of Capital Collective, a result of Mareli’s passion and a deep-rooted love for Pretoria. Having organised various events in the inner city, Mareli decided to get everyone involved to bring more feet into the city. The quality and diversity at Capital Collective’s Market at the Sheds has made it an institution in Pretoria since October 2014, offering visitors only the best local craft. Ever since, Capital Collective has partnered with great artists, other collectives and businesses to create more reasons to go to Pretoria’s CBD. Capital Collective’s constant search for sponsorships

and partnerships has produced great results and its continuous efforts will surely make for great events in future.

Rejuvenating the city

Capital residents are fortunate enough to have an array of beautiful architecture, landmarks and history surrounding them. And Mareli has spent the last couple of years researching and collecting knowledge about rejuvenation projects in various cities across the world. The aim is not to aggressively divide and conquer, but rather to enable organic growth and reform that includes everyone in the city. With innovative plans for cycling and walking routes that are ideal for commuters and city explorers, Capital Collective has made it its mission to bring together a proudly Pretorian community.

s the industrial trend continues to gain popularity, we’re seeing an increasing focus on exposed hardware in product design. Rather than trying to create furniture with a slick appearance, designers are drawing attention to the details that hold everything together. By keeping the structure of the system visible, it becomes a feature rather than something purely functional.

This trend has definite appeal in the local market where we don’t have stores like IKEA that really democratise design. The ability to personalise and add a special touch to ordinary pieces of furniture is compelling, and hopefully we’ll see more brands introducing products like this in the future.

A: We have a website and we want to create an interactive educational platform for parents in future. Q: What’s your most popular item/service? A: Our most popular occupational therapy service is the early childhood stimulation Senso-Art groups. These groups are 90 minutes in duration and offer a wide variety of stimulation activities that were carefully selected and planned to optimise creativity and play. The most popular item in The Grow Shop is the Baby Floater. This device offers a unique waterbased exercise for infants. Research has shown that baby floating improves muscle tone, balance and early left/right brain development.

ne of the ironies of South Africa’s current economic problems is that the government has already mapped out many of the solutions. The National Development Plan (NDP) sets out all the most important things that need to be done to return this country to a path of prosperity.

This really presents company boards with a choice. Unless they take this money elsewhere and invest it in countries that they feel offer better opportunities, there is a simple decision to make: they can either sit on their cash, hoping that things will improve, or they can use it to drive the changes that they would like to see.

For complex reasons, however, implementation of the NDP is lacking. And unfortunately we don’t have the leadership to drive it.

This means thinking creatively, and potentially deviating from their core business to consider those things that make their core business possible. But if South African companies moved from looking at only the obvious economic opportunities in the markets they have always served, to thinking about the enormous potential that exists elsewhere in this country, there could be an awful lot to be gained.

One of the most critical issues identified by the NDP is that infrastructure development is key to economic growth. Building schools, roads, hospitals and communications infrastructure will unlock more of this country’s potential. Developing infrastructure is also recognised as one of the most effective ways of fighting poverty and inequality. Giving people better access to education, health care and commercial opportunities, immediately improves their chances of being economically productive.

andton Central is becoming more pedestrian-friendly in keeping with global urban trends. Traditionally many of the entrances to buildings in SA’s business capitals were accessed via parkades. Now Sandton has a new generation of innovative commercial properties with welcoming street-level entrances, expanded pavement widths and pedestrian-friendly urban designs. The increased walkability should boost health and economic and environmental benefits for those with real estate investments, businesses or homes in this financial hub. Recent improvements include the changes under way around the

Gautrain Sandton Station, its outer face connecting a vibrant street-fronted retail area with those on foot – the station pavement has been expanded to a wider pedestrian zone of 5,2m in some areas and a new pavement design includes trees and balustrades. West Street’s pavements were improved for the City of Johannesburg’s EcoMobility World Festival 2015. They are now getting an additional makeover to improve pedestrian access. Situated above and adjacent to the Gautrain station, Kgoro Central is a new mixed-use green development that will create a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly urban environment using wide, demarcated walkways,

In 2018, Discovery moves to a new resource-efficient, sustainable 87,000m2 global head office building. Improved walkability makes a city more appealing to residents and businesses, according to Elaine Jack, city improvement district manager, Sandton Central Management District. “Much of Sandton’s road infrastructure was developed with only vehicles in mind, typical of the development of its time. Today it is increasingly recognised that walkability is an important part of sustainable urban design,” says Jack.

C

ornwall Hill is a sought-after suburb offering tranquillity and privacy in a country-like atmosphere. Growth in property values has been constant over the last few years, even while economic conditions have been tough. The suburb falls between Nellmapius Drive to the north and west, the Sesmylspruit to the south and Longdown Road to the east, and has easy access to the R21 highway.

The main estate of the suburb is Cornwall Hill Country Estate developed in 1998 with stand sizes between 1ha, 4,000m2 and 1,000m2 and a wide range of English-country-style homes. Turnover of houses in this suburb is low with a good return on investment and superb living conditions. The estate provides 24-hour security with a perimeter wall, electric fencing and fingerprint access control, so residents can enjoy peaceful living in a safe environment. The homeowners’ association also has a good relationship with the local community policing forum. One of the biggest attractions for a buyer is Cornwall Hill College, a private school

for children from Grade 0 to Grade 12, which can be accessed without leaving Cornwall Hill Country Estate. The school provides safety and convenience for learners living in the estate who can walk, ride bikes or be driven to school without leaving the estate’s boundaries. Horses may be kept on 1ha stands in the suburb and children and horses have the right of way. A focal point of the area is the memorial to fallen members of the Union Defence Force where residents can enjoy picnics at sunset on Cornwall Hill. The Hennops River along the southern border of the estate is home to a park that is perfect for braais or picnics and can be explored on foot, bicycle or horseback. Another popular meeting spot for residents is the children’s play park in the middle of the suburb where moms are seen most afternoons watching their little ones play.
