I
f you're looking for the peace and tranquillity of the countryside, a moderate climate throughout the year, and the comfort of being close to good medical facilities, Mpumalanga’s Lowveld region is a good retirement destination to consider.

This low-altitude, subtropical region in the eastern part of Mpumalanga (meaning “place where the sun rises”) includes the towns of Barberton, Hazyview, Malelane, Sabie and White River, among others – all of them located within a 70km radius from the well-developed capital city of Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit), which offers a host of amenities and services required by senior citizens. The Lowveld is also home to the jewel of South African national parks, the Kruger National Park.
NATURE NEARBY: • Lowveld National Botanical Garden: 70% of pathways in the developed part are accessible by wheelchair. • Kruger National Park: explore South Africa’s largest and oldest game reserve – self-drive or guided tours. • Panorama Route: some scenic points include God’s Window, Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and several prominent waterfalls.
This region offers retirees various options to suit their lifestyle, level of activity, taste and budget. If a slower-paced life is preferred, there are quiet, smaller, laid-back towns. There are bigger towns, too, if you prefer the busier urban areas.
Retirement facilities here often offer a combination of retirement villages and lifestyle estates. Developers have also introduced the concept of twin-community development (on the same grounds) providing safe and trouble-free country living for both over-50s and young families. Other developments have even introduced a threshold age of 40 for residents as an alternative to the usual age of 50. Both full-title homes and sectional-title apartments are on offer, while many of these developments also offer assistedliving and frail-care services. As a retirement destination, the Lowveld has much to offer. It’s a scenic area rich in culture, history and tourism options which beckon to be explored by selfdrive or guided-tour excursions. For those who are less mobile, the focus is on enhancing quality of life and creating social interaction opportunities within the borders of their retirement environment.
TRANSPORT PLUS: • Mbombela is situated just off the N4 highway linking the Lowveld to Gauteng’s main cities. • Nelspruit Airport and the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (about 60km northeast of Mbombela). • Daily shuttles between White River, Mbombela and Gauteng.

There seems to be no end in sight to the smartwatch trend. In South Africa alone, the trend has been growing phenomenally, helped by health insurance companies who make use of these devices to track their users and reward them with points. Most smartwatches can make and receive calls, send and receive messages, take photos and videos, are voice operated and, of course, can track your heart rate as well as the number of steps you walked – making them a fitness enthusiast’s dream.

O
nica Masilo moved her business to its current home in Brooklyn in September 2014. With many developments happening in the area, and her salon being centrally located, close to shopping malls and many of her clients, she saw potential to grow her business. Q: How did your business start? A: I’ve worked in the beauty industry for 10 years and was presented with an opportunity to buy a salon on Charles Street, Brooklyn, in December 2013. I grabbed the opportunity and haven’t looked back since. The salon moved from those premises a year later to our current premises. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I was referred to my current
premises by a friend who needed a nail technician to rent space in his salon. I saw big potential to grow a business at this location due to the developments happening in the area. The business is centrally located on a main through road of Brooklyn and close to shopping malls and companies as well as many of my clients. The suburb also gives you a feeling of calmness and tranquillity so you can escape the busy life, yet it has all necessary amenities nearby. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I wasn’t looking for a property but was referred to the current property through a friend. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he property is secure, there’s enough safe parking and it’s easily accessible for clients. There are a number of complementary businesses at the same premises, which increases foot traffic coming into my business. It has an enjoyable, tranquil atmosphere due to it being a former residential property, and is the perfect salon alternative for clients who don’t want to enter busy shopping malls.
Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Most of the rentals in this area range from R150 to R300 per square metre. Q: How many people go through your business each day? A: T he therapists see eight to 15 clients a day depending on the treatments required. Q: D o you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, I would definitely like to have more people working under the Beauty Lobby umbrella. I would like to expand to bigger premises where I can empower women and perhaps franchise the business. Q: D o you operate online as well? A: Not yet, but we will soon as many businesses are operating online, particularly with marketing, so we want to share our little cocoon with the world. Q: What's your most popular service? A: G el, fibre and silk nails, massages and threading.
