n the lead up to one of my favourite public holidays, Heritage Day, SANParks will once again be celebrating SA National Parks Week – a week when most SANParks will be offering free entry for day visitors and the local community. The initiative starts tomorrow and will run until 22 September, with some parks extending the celebration to include the weekend and public holiday. What better way is there to get into the spirit of things than by exploring more of our beautiful country?

hen you step into the sunny section of Le Quartier Francais that is now La Petite Colombe, you know you'll have an extraordinary food experience. The team is friendly and relaxed, confident of living up to the high expectations that come with being the sister restaurant to the much-acclaimed La Colombe. Chef proprietors, Scot Kirton and James Gaag, have entrusted the kitchen to young head chef, John Norris-Rogers, who is loving the challenge of training up a new team in the La Colombe

manner and has created a stunning first tasting menu infused with the zest and freshness of spring. Starting with West Coast oysters in a lush Champagne velouté with green apple tang, accompanied by a beautifully fruity MCC from Stony Brook; then an amuse-bouche, two intense mouthfuls encapsulating local flavours of Cape Malay pickled fish and snoek paté, the eight courses that follow are a gem of diverse elements, complex and playful, and exquisitely complemented with expert wine pairings.

Every dish is impeccable, but personal highlights include the springbok tataki with chicken parfait, rum-braised pineapple and a light Jerusalem artichoke purée and spuma with a touch of orange. And the citrus-glazed kingklip illustrates the La Colombe genius of unexpected flavour combinations; the simply grilled linefish bridges winter and spring on velvety vanilla-infused parsnip purée, asparagus velouté touched with truffle, the smokiness of pancetta complementing fresh green asparagus and courgette flower. Andrew Cook, sommelier, does a fine job of telling the stories behind each pairing, conjuring up seventh generation family vineyards, the varied landscapes of the Cape and big wines made in small quantities. As he pours us a deep violet monster of a wine, the Black Elephant Vintners “The Back Roads” Petite Syrah 2015, of which only one barrel was made, his joy of discovery is infectious. He bought all 400 bottles for La Petite Colombe reserving the wine for the pairing menu, where it's the perfect accompaniment to the seared Wagyu, braised brisket, sweetbread, gremolata and mellow onion soubise. While the gourmand menu and wine pairing is the ultimate in culinary adventures and an absolute delight from start to finish, the more affordable winter special also offers a fabulous foodie experience of four courses (plus delectable extras) at weekday lunches until the end of October – well worth taking French leave for!

The 10th annual Iziko Museums of South Africa In_Herit Festival starts tomorrow in honour of Heritage Month WORDS: MOLLY FITZ-PATRICK
IMAGES: NIGEL PAMPLIN
S
eptember will always be known as the month of spring – the mornings are crisp, the days are warm, plants are flowering and trees are colourful again. In South Africa, however, September is also known by a different name, Heritage Month. While all of our public holidays are equally significant, Heritage Day is particularly special. The purpose of Heritage Day is to encourage all South Africans to celebrate their cultural heritage, traditions, beliefs, and language while also appreciating those of others and the incredible diversity within our country. The Iziko Museums of South Africa, a custodian of our heritage, has hosted the annual In_Herit Festival since 2007. This year, in partnership with the HCI Foundation and Business and Arts South Africa, the In_Herit Festival will take place from 18 – 24 September. The festival offers free entry to Iziko museums throughout the week (entry to
the Castle of Good Hope and Groot Constantia will be free only on Heritage Day, and entry to the Planetarium will be half-price on the day). From tomorrow, you'll have an opportunity to explore and contemplate South Africa’s history through the different Iziko museums. You can expect amazing exhibitions, guided tours, public discussions, behindthe-scenes tours, and performances, which will offer insight into our diverse and dynamic cultural, natural and artistic heritage. Even more special perhaps is the Iziko Mobile Museum, #MuseumWithoutWalls, which will broaden the impact of the museum with its week-long outreach programme, visiting communities who can’t access the museum sites. Iziko operates 11 national museums, the Planetarium and the Social History Centre, which means there will be an almost endless number of things to do during the festival. The full list of activities is available on the Iziko website (iziko.org.za).
While each of the Iziko museums has its own unique character, purpose and remarkable collections, two recommendations would be the National Gallery and the Planetarium. The National Gallery has several extraordinary exhibitions at the moment, including Gathering Strands, showcasing the works of Lionel Davis; The African Choir 1891 Re-Imagined, a modern soundimage installation based on The African Choir’s first tour to Victorian England; Hidden Treasures, a collection of amazing art and artefacts from the Permanent Collection of African Art, some of which have never been seen before and others that have been rediscovered. The Planetarium, which has always been a favourite, has recently undergone a major upgrade, making it more enthralling than ever before. Make the most of Heritage Month by enjoying and learning from Iziko’s In_Herit Festival with your family and friends. For updates visit the Facebook event page (goo.gl/hHE4cE).
Salt River’s new spirit Gin distillery, Hope on Hopkins, has come out with a “tequila” WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES
IMAGE: SUPPLIED
I
f you loved the enigmatic gins from Hope on Hopkins, it’s time for a taste of the local distillery’s “tequila”. Lucy Beard, co-owner, gives us the low-down on the new Esperanza. Q: Esperanza is “tequila”, but you can’t call it tequila. Why not? A: Although our spirit is made from 100% blue agave, the name has a protected designation of origin status, so you can only call it tequila if it’s made in certain states in Mexico. Q: Why the decision to branch out into agave spirit? A: With the craft beer and spirit revolution, people are also understanding what they’re drinking and wanting to experiment. People are realising that there’s more to tequila than just drinking it in shooters. Leigh (Lucy’s partner and Hope on Hopkins co-owner) is a huge tequila fan and always has been. When we found out that agave grows locally, we simply had to try our hand at tequila. Q: Talk me through the process of making agave spirit A: The piña – the heart – of the blue agave plant is cut out, then it’s baked, fermented and distilled. Fermenting was a challenge, and we played around with a lot of
different yeasts. We also discovered we need to distil very gently, as the first few trial batches tasted like rocket fuel! In the distilling, we wanted to achieve something in a sipping style of tequila; smooth, with some of the agave notes present. Q: Tell me about the final product, Esperanza A: The current release is a “Blanco”, and, as a sipping spirit, it’s more delicate, with the agave giving it a bit of a floral note. We’ll also be releasing an aged agave spirit, a reposado, just before Christmas. To be called reposado, the spirit has to be aged for at least two months, and we’ll age ours in new Hungarian oak barrels. Q: What’s the best way to enjoy Esperanza? A: We encourage people to sip it, perhaps over a single block of ice, or chilled straight out of the fridge. It’s amazing in a cucumber and mint margarita, and we also love to serve it with the rose and cucumber tonic from Fitch and Leedes, as a “T&T”.
Taste the Esperanza and other Hope on Hopkins spirits at the distillery on Hopkins Road in Salt River on Saturdays between 12 noon and 4pm. Reservations are recommended.

The future of South African property Eazi.com is a new kid on the block making buying and selling property a transparent, easy process WORDS: BRIDGET MCNULTY IMAGES: SUPPLIED
I
t’s been a long time in the making – 12 months of development followed by six months of beta testing – but eazi.com officially launched on 1 September, and it’s here to shake things up. We speak with Shaun Minnie, CEO, about what makes the company different. Q: Why do we need another online estate agent? A: We don’t – eazi.com isn’t an online estate agent. Rather, we see ourselves as a property marketplace: a space for buyers to meet sellers, and sellers to meet buyers. We facilitate everything, you don’t have to do anything yourself, but we don’t insert ourselves unnecessarily into the process. We’re registered as an estate agency with the Estate Agency Affairs Board, but we view ourselves as so much more.
create a much more efficient way of buying and selling property. Our solution is a full-service model empowered by cutting-edge tech. Q: What do you mean by cutting-edge tech? A: Take a look at our website and you’ll see; we offer an online bidding system that lets buyers make an offer on a property 24/7 and see what other offers have been made. Sellers can accept or reject offers online, and also change their property’s listing price, or other details, from
anywhere, anytime, 24/7. We offer information on sold properties so that you can see what properties sold in your area, and for how much. We always let you see the addresses of the properties you’re interested in without having to email or call us. We’ve tried to provide
solutions for all those annoying things about buying or selling property in the past – making it a transparent, easy process. Q: Is the whole process online? A: You can make and accept offers online, but the legal paperwork has to be signed in person. As far as
listing properties, that’s up to you – it’s possible to list your property online and upload your own pics, but we also have a dedicated team (property consultants, admin and legal staff) who can do everything for you, including professional photography, drone and 3-D images, and even floor plans. Essentially, we’re taking the best of digital and combining it with the best of the human touch. Q: Do you charge commission? A: No, we don’t believe your investment should be diluted by a commission. We charge a single fixed transaction fee of R29,500. It costs the same to effectively market and sell a property, irrespective of the value.
he property industry has been T operating in a vacuum for the last 100 years, and not much has changed in all that time. In the last few years, there have been some advances, with online estate agents offering low-cost commission, but we wanted to

Bathroom makeover You don’t need to break the bank to give your bathroom a new lease of life. An interior decorator offers stylish, cost-effective ideas. WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK
5 1 2 3 4 5
Top trends
Statement furniture in bathrooms is making a big comeback. Modern bathrooms are increasingly featuring freestanding bathtubs.
Balance out your bold tiles and bright colours with plain, neutral cabinets. Give your bathroom a unique look with mismatched tiles. Avoid the tired, old bathroom art and rather go for eclectic art pieces for a chic look.
I
f you live with a room long enough, you stop seeing how tired it is. You get too familiar with it to scrutinise it closely. However, when you do, or the message is brought home when you see somebody else’s spruced-up bathroom, you realise how much work has to be done. Tinks Robinson-Gibb, Peppergreen Interiors, enjoys the challenge of giving a room a makeover rather than surgery. The first rule, she says, is to leave the plumbing as it is. “It’s expensive to relay piping, so rather refresh what’s there.” As with any upgrade, look at the room as a single entity, rather than individual elements. It needs to work visually and functionally as one space. Even if you only refresh parts at a time, create an overall vision. Tinks prefers not to prescribe a colour palette, but rather the intensity of colour. “Paint is inexpensive, so highlight a wall in a deep or bright hue. If your budget allows, consider vinyl wallpaper. There are numerous designs that look sensational in a bathroom – hints of forest, water and so on.” She’s a great proponent of mirrors, to add dimension and volume in a small space, and suggests having an entire mirrored wall. Alternatively, you can add a mirror to a large section of the wall. Tinks also likes repurposing furniture, as it’s cost-effective and adds individuality into a space. “Instead of standing pedestals, why not salvage and renovate an old chest of drawers or sideboard? Cut a hole
for the basins, and seal shut affected drawers. Alternatively, for a more rustic bathroom vibe, brick up two sides, add a lintel for the surface, screed and skim it, then rest two bowl-shaped basins on the surface.” Tinks adds that there are many easy solutions for upgrading and refreshing the bathroom fittings and fixtures. “Leave the loo pedestal in place, and rather upgrade the seat and lid. For baths, basins and showers, replace and upgrade taps, modernise the showerhead to a large square one and replace the shower cubicle with fresh glass.” When it comes to floors, she suggests waterproof wooden laminate, and, in the shower, contemporary non-slip flooring and tiled walls. “Modern subway tiles come in numerous shades, and they look clean and stylish.” Lighting can also make or break a room. “If the room is dark, add more downlighters or spotlights, or, if it’s particularly gloomy, and it’s feasible, consider a skylight.” Once you have the shell, there are numerous little niceties that give the bathroom its character and comfort. “If there’s space for an armchair, cover it in a loose towelling cover. Other characterful elements would be a hanging plant, framed prints, and new towels and bathmats. Fresh flowers, magazines, candles and a room freshener are also other optional elements... and who doesn’t love a heated towel rail.”

KZN executive joins national property practitioners board
A
ndile Mnguni, executive, Tongaat Hulett Developments, has been appointed to the national board of the South African Institute of Black Property Practitioners. This follows his appointment as chairman of the committee of the institute’s KwaZulu-Natal chapter in January. Launched in July 1996, the institute contributes towards policy formulation, facilitates education and skills development, and helps remove bottlenecks to the growth of black-owned property businesses. Membership is open to professionals, corporates, public sector departments, employees, entrepreneurs and students. Mnguni has over 17 years’ experience in the property and construction sector. His tertiary qualifications
include a BTech in quantity surveying from the Durban University of Technology and an MBA from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. After working as a quantity surveyor for Aveng Grinaker-LTA, he joined Tongaat Hulett Developments where he has led development and served as a director and chairman of property management associations at Izinga, Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre and Ridgeside. He is responsible for the development and execution of Tongaat Hulett Developments’s Outer West landholding strategy. “(The institute) does great work and I am pleased that, thanks to the experience I have gained and the support of Tongaat Hulett, I will be able to contribute to the development of the property sector and provide a KZN perspective on national issues facing our industry,” says Mnguni.

Closing middle-income property market gap in Cape Town
W
ith escalating property values and rentals near the CBD, wealthier buyers are catered for, but gaps are widening in the supply of housing and rentals to middle-income groups. “As a free-market economy, supply and demand determines prices and also applies to the property market. Areas close to nodes of employment, and routes along new public transport, are increasingly in demand,” says Brett Herron, Mayco Member: transport and urban development, City of Cape Town. Against this backdrop, the provision of new housing opportunities for middleincome earners is inadequate. While
government interventions are aimed at people earning less than R15,000 per month, the group earning between R15,000 and R30,000 per month is neglected. Into this gap, a number of projects have been launched, notably the city’s metro-south east integration zone including the Main Road strip from Woodstock to Observatory. To help fill the middle-class property market gap, Rawson Developers is developing in the urban development zone (UDZ) area of Observatory Main Road – an area soon to be serviced by the MyCiTi bus service. “Exciting potential exists for great returns and sustainable rental income
for buyers. The UDZ system offers tax relief on capital invested in income-earning property in a designated area. As long as your dwelling is earning rent, you may claim a portion of your purchase price as a tax rebate annually over a set period, as long as you are earning 100% from occupation,” says Bill Rawson, chairman, Rawson Property Group. Herron says, “There are ample opportunities in many areas across the metro, and the development and availability of affordable rental accommodation in central areas of the city must play a key role in the future development of Cape Town.”
A prototype for better homes
F
lexibility and mobility are key factors defining modern lifestyles and informing the design elements and materials used in contemporary homes, with many inhabitants opting to live in more comfortable and practical spaces without compromising on style. But what makes a better home and how can this ideal be achieved through design and construction? This is what interior construction
company, Saint-Gobain, together with Thomashoff and Partner Architects set out to determine when they considered insights from a recent survey, which led to them creating a set of criteria for building better homes. The result is Stand 51, a model for improved house design. The show home is currently being built in Val de Vie Estate, Franschhoek, and follows its predecessor, Stand 47, which tested people’s experiences around home comfort.
Stand 51 will be a smart, open, versatile space responding to insights that South Africans prefer open-plan houses as well as homes that can adapt and grow, and rooms with dual functions. As such, the prototype will offer maximum acoustic and thermal comfort, safety, flexibility and environmental protection, and showcases how the evolution of design and technology can influence future-proof home design and living.

Milnerton
KFM radio personality, Sechaba G, tells us about her neighbourhood
WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
IMAGES: ASHLEY IRVIN ROBERTSON, HEATHER DURAND & ANTON SCHOLTZ
We wanted to be close to the beach and have plenty of space with a garden. Milnerton is close enough to work without the congestion and the busyness of the CBD. SECHABA G
S
echaba Gqeba, aka Sechaba G, presents the lunchtime show on KFM. Her radio career began 10 years ago in Gauteng as a news intern for Eyewitness News, followed by stints on SAfm, Radio 2000 and Kaya FM. She came to Cape Town about four years ago, living in the Southern Suburbs before moving to Milnerton near Blouberg two years ago. “There’s this whole thing about Cape Town, where people steer towards the central part and forget about all the surrounding areas,” Sechaba says, when asked what influenced her choice of neighbourhood. “There’s also the notion that the Northern Suburbs area is far out, and Milnerton is often counted in with the Northern Suburbs, but it only takes me 12 minutes to get to work. I’m a mother and a working woman, so being close to town and next to the beach was important. Also, the joys of having a house with a big garden was another factor that made us look outside the CBD.” She has enjoyed escaping the congestion of the City Bowl. “There’s definitely less traffic and it’s less busy. It’s basically the suburbs.”
And while the beach is the main attraction in her neighbourhood, Sechaba loves exploring to discover Cape Town’s hidden gems. “We use the weekend to go on day trips, and Milnerton is very well placed to explore the whole of Cape Town, as well as Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.” A self-confessed foodie, Sechaba loves the variety of restaurants on offer in and around Cape Town. “Some of my favourite places to eat are out of Cape Town; they’re in the Winelands. And Milnerton is great because we’re literally only 10 minutes away from restaurants like De Grendel and a few other wine farms in the Durbanville Wine Valley area, such as D’Aria; those are really good finds.” Closer to home, there’s plenty to enjoy with her husband and their young son. “I love the Blouberg promenade, which many people overlook because they want to be on the Atlantic Seaboard side. An ideal day in Milnerton and Blouberg would be spent on the promenade; there are loads of quirky cafes along the Blouberg strip. I would recommend a casual walk on the beach followed by sundowners.”

ABOUT SECHABA G: Sechaba presents the lunchtime show weekdays from 1pm to 4pm on KFM, and has worked in radio for 10 years. She is also a seasoned emcee, does regular voice-over work for a variety of clients and is hoping to begin a TV career in the near future.
