Cygnets just days away Resident Longboat Key swans Susie and Sully are nesting on the Harbourside Golf Course, a sure sign of spring. Baby swans, or cygnets, hatch about 35 days after the beginning of incubation, usually around the first of May. Last year, the pair cared for three eggs but after bad weather flooded the nest several times, there were no hatchlings, David Novak, Longboat Key’s unofficial swan keeper, shared.

Clair shares priorities for commission seat 77-year-old former commissioner chosen unanimously to serve.

O

n April 3, the Town Commission unanimously approved Randy Clair to fill the District 1 seat, which was left vacant when Commissioner Armando Linde resigned on March 21. Clair said his neighbors encouraged him to apply for the job, and although he represents District 1, Clair has emphasized that he knows his responsibility is to represent all of the residents of Longboat Key. The Longboat Observer asked Clair to fill out a questionnaire similar to those completed by the four candidates in the March 14 to see where he stands: What are three main priorities you will undertake as a town policymaker? 1) Complete update to Town Zoning Code and related Comprehensive Plan provisions; 2) Find an economic source of acceptable white sands grain size for use in beach renourishment programs; and 3) Develop and implement jointly agreed effective solutions to traffic congestion. As the town moves to update its comprehensive beach management plan, what are some changes you would like to see to the town’s policy on re-nourishment or groins? Joint planning and contracting

Turtle season starts May 1, and the town will enforce new rules for residents. JOHN MCGUIRE STAFF WRITER

A

s biologist Rick Herren discussed sea turtle nesting season, he recalled a moment during graduate school when he and his friend were watching a sea turtle as it was nesting. His friend wanted to take a photo. “I told him not to,” Herren said. “And he did anyway.” The flash from the camera caused the turtle to remain completely still for 45 minutes. Herren used the incident, which he said his friend felt horrible about, as a cautionary tale to convey how disorienting light can be to sea turtles. Herren was addressing the 30 or so people who attended Longboat Key’s turtle-nesting season lighting workshop on April 5. The biologist, a member of the nonprofit Sea Turtle Conservancy, has been studying sea turtles in the field for about 25 years. Sea turtle nesting season begins on May 1 and ends Oct. 31. This season is the first since the town passed revised rules on sea turtle nesting and shoreline lighting. The new ordinance eliminated a requirement that limited code enforcement to searching for violations on moonlit nights. It also increases the types of lighting the town can enforce from nine to 13 varieties, including interior lighting. The ordinance also makes it a violation to leave furniture and recreational items close to the shoreline from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Code Enforcement Officer Chris Elbon has also stressed that, to be compliant, light bulbs must be certified by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Herren explained that, when newborn sea turtles hatch, they are guided into the Gulf by moonlight reflecting off the water. Other light sources can disorient the turtles, causing the hatchlings to move away from the water. He relayed to the audience a general rule to follow. “If you can see a light while standing on the nesting beach, then it’s probably a problem for sea turtles,” Herren said. The biologist said a common misconception about turtlefriendly lighting is that it’s less safe than bright lights. To make his point, Herren showed the audience a photo of a gated area, lit by an unshielded white light. He then showed a photo of the same area lit by a turtle-friendly light, and a person became visible behind the gate. Before Herren’s presentation, Assistant Town Manager Mike Hein said the town was hosting the workshop to educate residents about sea turtle nesting before the season begins. He noted that there were “a record number” of disorientations last year. Hein mentioned that the town’s beach nourishment program has been completed, and helping sea turtles adjust is a priority. “We have a vested interest in making sure that the turtles survive and thrive in this wonderful new environment,” Hein said.

The density referendum regarding the former Colony Beach and Tennis Resort property was defeated, but that does not mean the work of members of former political action committee Preserve Longboat Inc. is finished. Before the March 14 referendum, the PAC led opposition to developer Unicorp National Developments’ proposal for the property, which included adding 180 residential units to the property’s existing 237 tourism units. The PAC was responsible for placing signs up and down Longboat Key, as well as emails to residents urging a “no” vote. The referendum was defeated 87% to 13%. Now, Preserve Longboat no longer operates as a PAC, but a “community organization that represents the interests of Longboat Key” as indicated by the overwhelming defeat of the referendum, said Preserve Longboat President David Lapovsky. Members of the group attended a recent Town Commission meeting to inform commissioners that Preserve Longboat is “alive and

well.” Lapovsky said the final decision regarding redevelopment of the Colony property rests with the Town Commission. “We will continue to advocate with you for a development plan that maintains the character of Longboat Key,” Lapovsky said to the commissioners. “And we will oppose any plan that fails to do so.” Lapovsky emphasized the referendum result proves the vast majority of Key voters are against projects that will increase density and potentially add to traffic concerns. “They don’t want our beautiful island to look like Orlando or Miami Beach,” he said. Tom Meurer, the PAC’s vice president, said the PAC supports the “rapid redevelopment” of the Colony property, as long as the project includes a maximum of 237 units and is within “all of the town’s building code limits.” In particular, Meurer noted buildings should not be higher than 65 feet above elevation, the town’s maximum building height. Chuck Whittall, president of Unicorp, had originally proposed buildings reaching a maximum height of 12 stories for the Colony property. Before the referendum, the developer decreased that maximum to nine stories. Whittall has stated he does not intend to sell the property, despite

the failed referendum, and will propose a new plan after the Town Commission approves a Planned Unit Development process. The ordinance that includes that process will be subject to first reading and public hearing on May 1. Frank Morneau, an Aquarius resident who served as president of Preserve Longboat when it was a PAC, recently parted ways with the group. “We really fulfilled our principal objective,” Morneau said, noting the referendum was resolved by “a wonderfully high vote.” Morneau said he resigned with three other PAC members, one who also owns property at Aquar-

ius and two who reside at Tencon. Representing the two condominiums on either side of the former Colony property, Morneau said the four neighbors have communicated with Whittall since the referendum regarding the developer’s future plans for the site. “Chuck Whittall has been quite flexible,” Morneau said. “I’m very impressed.” Morneau said Whittall appears to have a “sincere desire to work with neighbors,” though he added discussions with the developer are not complete. Morneau is hopeful the needs of the Colony property’s direct neighbors will be consistent with

desires of the majority of Key residents. The former president had nothing but praise for the members of Preserve Longboat, mentioning that their cooperation during the campaign was a positive experience. “I’ve never worked with people I’ve respected as highly in an organization as quickly put together as Preserve Longboat,” Morneau said.

Developer Manfred Welfonder of The MW Group remains hopeful that his company’s vision for the former Colony Beach and Tennis Resort property will become a reality. “The MW Group remains prepared with its viable and feasible project,” Welfonder said. “We have everything and everyone in place to move forward immediately.” Welfonder has frequently advertised his plan for the property, should his company acquire the land. The height and density of Welfonder’s proposal would meet the town’s existing standards. “Our proposal conforms with official regulations and meets area’s hospitality market demands while maintaining Longboat Key’s ambiance,” Welfonder said. While Chuck Whittall has repeatedly said he has no intention of selling the property, Welfonder said his company soon plans to make a “reasonable, market-competetive offer with a fast payment schedule” to Colony unit owners.

CAN YOU HELP? If you can help the Longboat Key Police with their investigations of a cycling incident or a burglary, call them at 941-316-1977. File photos

Longboat Key Police Sgt. Robert Borque is seeking information regarding two cases in early April on the Key.

Longboat police seek help from residents on 2 cases JOHN MCGUIRE STAFF WRITER

Longboat Key police hope residents can help them solve a pair of incidents, one in which a man was seriously hurt and the other in which a couple reported the theft of about $8,000 in jewelry from their home. Police are looking into both cases and would like to hear from anyone on the Key who might

have information to propel their investigation. In the first incident, a bicyclist was seriously injured April 2 in a fall involving a pickup truck that drove from the scene. Longboat Key Police Sgt. Robert Borque said a Nova Scotia man remains hospitalized after the 2 p.m. incident in the 4900 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive. Investigators are piecing together details.

he was there to do survey work, which required him to check for property markers in the backyard. The residents accompanied the man to the backyard where the man “called his supervisor” and asked for a metal detector. The man then told the victims that he would need to retrieve the metal detector and left. While the couple was in the backyard with the first man, it is thought that a second person entered the residence. The victims did not realize anything had been taken from their home until late Thursday night. They called police early Friday morning to report missing more than $8,000 worth of jewelry. Victims described the first man as a “well-groomed” Hispanic man, about 5-foot-8, weighing between 160 and 170 pounds. He was clean shaven with dark hair, and wearing a gray and green sweater vest. He was reported to be driving a newer model maroon pickup truck. The other person was not seen by the victims. Cumming said officers canvassed the neighborhood on Friday and were told of a suspicious man in the area, but officers were not able to get a detailed description. “We have some potential leads, and we’re following those up,” Cumming said Similar incidents were reported in January in Nokomis in which burglars posed as landscapers. Cumming said officers are encouraging residents to be careful about opening their doors when they’re not expecting visitors and to feel free to call police if they feel uneasy about who might be at the door.

The Key experienced a possible hit-and-run and a distraction burglary during the same week.

Borque said the cyclist was riding south on GMD when he fell. One witness, who was on the opposite side of the street, said he saw a white pickup truck passing the cyclist. As the truck passed, the witness heard a thump and someone shout an expletive, then saw the victim lying on the ground. Borque said the bicycle is damaged, but the witness did not see the truck hit the cyclist. Police are trying to determine if the truck struck the cyclist or if the cyclist fell first and the truck ran over the bicycle. The witness could not provide a description of the driver. Police are seeking any information on the white pickup truck, which continued to head south on GMD. Borque described it as an older, smaller-sized model, possibly from the mid-1990s. It might have damage on the passenger side, Borque said. The cyclist was taken to Blake Medical Center where he remained in critical condition. Police Chief Pete Cumming said officers have little information on the incident, which is why the department is reaching out for more potential witnesses. This incident was the second involving a bicycle to leave a victim with severe injuries in 2017. The first took place in February, when an Indiana man was struck by a motorist while bicycling near the 2200 block of GMD. Four days after the April bike incident, police were called to a Bogey Lane neighborhood to investigate a burglary. According to the two victims’ report to police, a man knocked on the couple’s door and told them

hen one of our Longboat Key readers and residents read last week about the “climate change” sign-post at the north entrance to Lido Beach, he sent this message our way: “Sarasota proudly announces to tourists with permanent beach signage info on when barrier islands and area waterfront property will be going underwater based on questionable climate change computer projections. “Our tax money is paying for signage communicating to visitors ‘enjoy the area while you can, but don’t invest here!’ “Great for the real estate market and Sarasota area economy … “Sarasota needs to start pointing the gun away from ourselves! “Stunningly STUPID!” We had to see it for ourselves. Oh, my. All four sides of this handsome post were full of urgings to beachgoers on how to be better, environmentally correct earthlings. The three that really grabbed us are shown in the photo below. “Stunningly STUPID!”? Well, it’s not right; that’s for sure. These urgings all contain a point of view, a judgment. They’re an urging on how you should live your life, and someone telling you what is better and

These are just three of the thinly veiled environmental messages on the city’s sea level-rising sign at Lido Key Beach.

SUCCESSION PLANNING Succession is an issue in every business enterprise. And most of you know one of the cardinal rules of management: Every manager should be scouting for and training his or her successor. Perhaps a version of that should be one of the expectations of everyone who serves on a board or commission for the town of Longboat Key: Recruiting, or at least identifying, the next generation of town government volunteers and Town Commission candidates. This comes to mind in the wake of Longboat reaching another period

not good for the environment. That someone is Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin. Over the years, Sarasotans have learned and seen that Barwin is a man of good intentions. He wants Sarasota to be a good place to live; he sincerely cares about the city’s quality of life.

The city’s beach post informs visitors that sea levels are expected to rise in 15 and 30 years, predicting they could rise as much as 2.4 feet by 2060, covering 30% of St. Armands Circle and South Lido Beach with water. Mind you, there is a source note — the National Oceanic and

But Barwin has shown a tendency to use his position as the chief operating officer of the city to promote his beliefs. Almost a year ago, in the wake of the massacre at the Orlando nightclub, Barwin proposed the Sarasota City Commission adopt a resolution that would ask federal and state officials to work toward “limiting the availability and use of military grade, high capacity magazine assault weapons to law enforcement agencies.” Thankfully, city commissioners recognized that was not Barwin’s place. On traffic, Barwin has said on various occasions he supports Sarasota adopting “traffic-calming” techniques and becoming more pedestrian friendly. That’s fine, but that position appears to be at the exclusion of other alternatives. Consider the city’s stance on Fruitville Road. It appears determined to narrow it. And now, Barwin is using his position as a pulpit to influence people on climate change and “sustainability.” To that end, the city of Sarasota even has a job for a “sustainability manager.” These are good intentions — at least from Barwin’s perspective. Obviously, he believes the world would be a better place if we adopted what he believed. And he apparently sees no problem with his using the city’s resources and platforms to further his views. Barwin explained his climate-change post at Lido Beach to the Sarasota HeraldTribune by saying: “We want to put the poles up to give people a heads-up to what’s likely to be coming.” “Likely to be coming”? Says who?

when the Town Commission and other boards have struggled to attract volunteers and candidates. Take, for instance, the fact former Town Commissioner Randy Clair was the only person to express interest filling the District 1 commission seat that became available with the resignation of Commissioner Armando Linde. Likewise, on the Planning and Zoning Board. Board Chair BJ Bishop recently noted how that board has no one from the north end of the Key. True, where one resides on the Key should not be a determinant of who serves on what board. Nonetheless, the fact there is no North Longboat Key resident on the planning board clearly shows the pool of candidates is thin to

Atmospheric Administration. But Barwin surely knows the subjects of predicting climate change, rising sea levels and the effects of greenhouse gases are as politically charged as the name Donald Trump. Even on the website the city cites as its source, NOAA says: “This tool should be used strictly as a planning reference tool and not for navigation, permitting or other legal purposes.” Nevertheless, Barwin takes it upon the city (and himself) to educate the public. But we question whether this kind of educating is the job of the city. Sure, there are occasions when it’s appropriate for our different levels of government to educate us. It’s a public service, for instance, when law enforcement officers and firefighters instruct us on steps we can take to increase our safety. But let’s cut to the quick: Barwin’s enviro-post on Lido Beach must go. The city of Sarasota should not be telling you to drive instead of fly; it should not be telling you to reduce the amount of red meat you eat. Or to compost your food waste. Barwin’s beach post reminds us of what Sarasota City Commission candidate Martin Hyde Jr. recently told our sister paper, the Sarasota Observer: “I think I should decide how I live, not the government.” Agreed. City Manager Barwin should leave the lecturing to proseltyzers and policy decisions to the elected city commissioners. A city manager’s job is to stick to the city’s knitting: streets, trash and public safety.

nonexistent. To remedy these conditions, you can imagine a variety of steps: n Formal or informal public receptions at which current and former commissioners and board members discuss what it takes to be a commissioner. n Asking commissioners to identify residents who might be potential commission candidates or board volunteers and recruiting them one-on-one. There’s an old saying in business: Nothing happens until you make a sale. A modified version of that could be: No one will run or volunteer for town boards unless someone is making an effort to recruit.

When Howard Rooks sold the 2-acre Amore property to the town of Longboat Key in January, he began the search for a new location. He’s finally found what he was looking for: Rooks is purchasing the space at 443 Burns Court in Sarasota and bringing his Amore staff and menu with him. The Burns property is under contract, and Rooks hopes to close on the property by May 31. He hopes to open the new location July 1 but he’s not totally set on Amore’s final night on Longboat Key. “I love that little street,” he said. “It’s very charming, it’s very quaint. It’s just a good place.” Rooks sold the 2-acre Amore property on Longboat to the town for $2.2 million to be used for the coming Arts, Cultural and Education Center. The property will allow the town to have a better frontage and entrance for the center and more parking. Rooks has owned the property at 555 Bay Isles Parkway since 2004 when it was Mattison’s Steakhouse. Amore opened in 2014 after the property was vacant for six years. The new location, which is close to Burns Court Cinema, is about half the size of the current location, Rooks said. It has a seating capacity of 150. As for business, Rooks think the

WHAT’S A MANGROVE? Varieties of mangroves exist around the world, largely in warm-weather zones. They thrive in brackish water, and are frequently found in estuaries, lagoons and tidal areas.

John McGuire

Bob Bunting said while some of Greer Island’s mangroves are fine, many are struggling or are dead.

Ill health of mangroves points to bigger issue, resident says Trees along shoreline help anchor sand, protect against storm surge on Longboat’s north end. JOHN MCGUIRE STAFF WRITER

On a Friday afternoon on Greer Island, also known as Beer Can Island, Bob Bunting is surrounded

by mangroves — many of which look like sticks in the ground, barren of leaves or other signs of life. Bunting, a former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration official, affirms these mangroves are dead, or at least suffering. While mangroves remain dense and flourishing in much of the area on and surrounding Greer Island, the sliver of land that connects the “island” to Longboat

Key, it is also home to many dead or dying mangroves. Bunting, who lives nearby at 360 North, said erosion is to blame for the declining health of the plants. Bunting explained that the mangroves thrive in brackish water from the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay, but too much saltwater can harm them. As this sliver of land has overwashed with increasing frequen-

cy, the number of dead mangroves has increased, Bunting said, adding that he recalls significant portions of the mangroves still flourishing on the sliver in June 2016. Bunting noted the roots and foliage of the mangroves, when healthy, help protect the mainland from storm surges. They also serve as a habitat for animals and birds. “It is an incredibly environmentally sensitive area,” Bunting said. “And it plays a huge role in protecting the shore.” The sliver containing the diminishing mangroves is also the area Bunting said is most susceptible to a breach. If a breach happens, Bunting said saltwater and sand would pour into the lagoon, throwing off the delicate balance of the lagoon’s water. It would also subject residences on the lagoon to wave action. Should the mangrove forests die, Bunting theorized it could take more than 50 years for the plants to grow back to their current form and density. A breach of Greer Island is a potential outcome being examined in the North End Shoreline Stabilization Project. In March, the Town Commission approved a $400,000 budget

for the plan. The funds, left over from previous construction projects in the beach budget, will be used to determine the feasibility of an immediate short-term solution, as well as developing a long-term plan for the area. In this case, “long-term” means decades or longer. Town staff will work with Olsen Associates Inc., the Key’s coastal engineer, to determine possible courses of action, then present the options to the Town Commission for consideration in the coming months. When it comes to long-term solutions, Bunting has advocated for a third groin at the northern tip of the Key to accompany the two groins already on the north end. While a third groin was initially proposed with the two near North Shore Road, the prospect was delayed after Manatee County challenged the plan. In a 2014 settlement, the town agreed not to begin permitting for the third groin until 2019, in return for construction of the other two. “I would be shocked if a groin wasn’t the answer,” Bunting said. Pat Zunz of resident group LBK North, of which Bunting is a member, has encouraged members to attend the Town Commission workshop meeting on Monday, April 17 to discuss options for the North End Shoreline Stabilization Project. Bunting said people like himself, who regularly enjoy Greer Island, have a duty to maintain it. “It’s our responsibility to leave it in good shape for the future,” Bunting said.

That’s a respectable number of years for a second career launched when I was 55. A bit of history: In my original work life, I was an ad woman working at major agencies in Detroit and New York. Christine Hall of Carpinteria, Calif., Kathryn Dandois-Boivin and Michelle Sibilia of Sarasota, and Veda Alban of Bradenton. I am grateful for the wisdom and patience. I owe special thanks to Mark Richardson, Streets, Facilities and Parks and Recreation manager for Longboat Key. Not only has he been diligent and extremely supportive over his 11 years of running the Bayfront Park Recreation Center, he managed the remarkable feat of getting the building open on schedule this January amidst all the ongoing work on the grounds. It is only regrettable

that while the town can find $2 million plus to expand and improve the grounds, it has done virtually nothing to improve the park’s only revenue producing component, the crumbling, 1970s handed-down-fromFar-Horizons shack where the classes take place. Like most teachers, I have learned more from my students than they have learned from me. My first lesson was a brutal one. I was teaching a toning class at the West Bay Athletic Club in Bradenton. I was new; the class was long-established. The students came as much to chat as to work out. I tried to silence

them and boy, did I get a crash course in the importance of the social component of exercise classes! One of my students drove it home just the other day. “You can’t stop,” she protested, “This is my support group.” But I should stop while I still feel good about the learning (and the socializing!) I am providing. I love my students who are way too kind and loyal to ever complain. But I catch my own little slips. There are some moves that are increasingly difficult for my arthritic joints to demonstrate. I have the same sense that Susan Goldfarb expressed when she told me she was ceasing to teach her yoga classes, and I’m so grateful that she shared. The universe tells me it is time to turn the page. This has been a rewarding experience. And I know that Mark Richardson is doing his dependable best to keep the Bayfront Park class schedule intact. The spirit in me honors the spirit in each of you. business travel were suddenly questionable. I bought a “Dancing Grannies” video, quit smoking, started an exercise regimen and hired a trainer, Bernadette Kathryn, who remains an inspiration, a friend and an adopted daughter. My first grandchild arrived in 1992 and my late aunt Marcia Stern Alexander dubbed me the “Aerobic Grandma,” a moniker I use proudly. Fast forward to 1996. I had left my agency job to care for my husband, Arnie Rosen, who soon died. I needed to do something life affirming and to get the smell of the hospital out of my nose, so I took courses, passed the first exam I had taken in 35 years and received a Personal Trainer Certification from the American Council on Exercise. Another early certification was Reebok “Flexible Strength,” a fitness-industry iteration of yoga built around the sun salutation. That was the foundation of my “Joy of Stretch” class — sonamed yoga was about vegetarians and high colonics. Next up were certifications to teach Power Pilates mat classes. I thought Pilates was a fad; I was wrong. The classes continue to grow and now draw as many and often more students as yoga. I have to thank a bunch of people for the success of my second career, beginning with my own yogis and teachers. They include Bernadette, Patricia “Niti” Seip of Lenox, Mass.,

Namasté. business travel were suddenly questionable. They include Bernadette, Patricia “Niti” Seip of Lenox, Mass.,

hen U.S. Marine veteran Bill Sterbinsky stood at Ken Thompson Parkway and stared out at the Ringling Bridge, he realized why he had joined the armed forces. It was so he could come back home and look at this very view. Sterbinsky, a co-founder of SRQ Vets, was one of several veterans present April 6 at the Operation Kindness Florida Inc. fundraiser.

The star-spangled celebration took place April 6 at the Harbourside Ballroom of the Longboat Key Club.

The event called for the Harbourside Ballroom to be given an All-American makeover. Red, white and blue balloons adorned the raffle tables and vibrant centerpieces decorated the center of each table. The event aids the nonprofit organization in raising money for wounded veterans. Last year, the organization raised more than $73,000 for veterans who sustained emotional and physical injuries. The money allows Operation Kindness to support K-9s for Warriors, Building Homes for

Heroes, Paws for Patriots at Southeastern Guide Dogs and SRQ Vets. Edward Cacciola, a cofounder of SRQ Vets, said its mission is on par with Operation Kindness’ mission of working together to help veterans. Air Force veteran Morgan Watt, who attended the event with his wife, Amber, and service dog, Foley, said it was nice to see so much community support. “It just means so much,” he said. “I don’t know how to put it into words.”

It was a fleeting emotional connection that inspired Ed Miracle to create “Trilogy,’’ an 800-pound bronze sculpture depicting a forlorn woman with her face cast to the ground while she holds another mask-like face higher. And it was another emotional connection that told the Longboat Key artist he had succeeded in his goal to create more meaningful art, not simply art that pays the bills. Miracle created “Trilogy” after the 2006 killing of a woman near Longboat Pass Bridge. While driving over the bridge not long after the woman’s death, Miracle spotted a man working on a memorial. The two made eye contact, which startled Miracle and ultimately compelled him to create a domestic violence piece. Years later, when the piece was complete, Miracle said he saw a man looking at it, crying. The man explained the sculpture represented to him the mask he felt he wore growing up in a church-going family with an abusive father. To make someone

because he knew they would sell easily. “That’s how you eat,” he said. “[But] at my old age, I wanted to say more than that. I want my work to have some kind of reaction to it as opposed to being oblivious.” Now Miracle, who lists such notable people as the late Ronald Reagan and the late Frank Sinatra as owners of his art, works on more meaningful pieces, such as “Trilogy.” And he has visions for a future project. In an effort to combat addiction, Miracle is starting a “Don’t Feed the Monkey” Campaign. The idea is simple, but the motive is complex. Miracle hopes to reach out to young people and have them create a piece of art, whether it be a song, painting or video, about their personal monkey. The saying refers to the adage of giving into one’s monkey, their desires. The end goal? Bring addiction to the forefront of people’s minds and host an art exhibit made up of the participants’ work. Then, Miracle wants the campaign, something he hopes can turn into a nonprofit organization, to go national. Right now, though, Miracle is focusing on raising awareness and money for the project. Through various art lessons, Miracle is hoping he can find support in Longboat Key residents. For those interested in taking art lessons with Miracle, contact Tree Beesong at 730-9480.

Chamber mingles with elected officials

O

n the back patio of Amore Restaurant on April 6, it was evident that the members of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce were doing one of the things they do best — networking. The chamber held its annual Hob Nob on Thursday evening, giving Chamber members the chance to mingle with local elected officials and the town’s management team. Various commis-

sioners and other town leaders were present to answer any questions and socialize with fellow locals. Before Chamber President Gail Loefgren could introduce each elected official, she had Howard Rooks, owner of Amore, make an announcement. The popular Longboat hotspot will move to Burns Court after its closing in May.

Key Niners bring season to close

Fairway Bay says farewell to snowbirds

B

efore the Key Niners could say au revoir to season, they had to play one more round of golf. Following their final round on the Harbourside Golf Course, the ladies enjoyed lunch in the Harbourside dining room. It was a French affair as gold Eiffel Towers sat in the center of each table, which the players circled with the champagne flutes that had been handed to them at the door.

W

ith the weather getting warmer, farewell season arrives on Longboat Key. Residents of Fairway Bay gathered for a sunset barbecue on April 8 at Bay Isles Beach Club to say goodbye to the snowbirds soon heading back north. About 65 people gathered to enjoy cocktails and appetizers before feasting on a buffet catered by Roadside Rib Shack.

ith the end of season, comes some change. St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, held its annual Women’s Guild installation lunch on April 4. After Mass, the new board was appointed. Ginny Akhoury was appointed president. She greeted the lunching ladies and thanked everyone for their hard work on the church’s Christmas Bazaar, Royal Rummage Sale and fashion show among other events and projects over the past year. She also shared how she had hoped for new members throughout the year and was thankful to now have some of them on the board with her. “I look forward to a beautiful year to come,” she said.

Library closes chapter on season A fter a banner 60th anniversary year, the Longboat Library closed the chapter on another season. On April 8, library volunteers gathered for an end-of-season luncheon at The Chart House. Before the group could enjoy lunch, it voted in new officers. Later, local freelance writer and author Amy Elder spoke to the group about her book, “Images of America: Sarasota County Islands and Beaches.” The book explores the history of Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Casey Key, Ven-

ice and Manasota Key. From May 1 to Oct. 31, the library will be open from 9 a.m., to noon. The new officers are: co-presidents: Mary Baker and Hazel Steskal; first vice president: Sandi Herr; second vice president: Barbara Torrence; treasurer: Ruth Strauss; secretary: Donna Godfrey; at-large members: Marcia Sexton, Sandy Shoenke, Priscilla Burke. New books will be ordered. See a list at longboatlibrary.org. — KATIE JOHNS Guest speaker and freelance writer and author Amy Elder

Incoming second Vice President Barb Torrence and member at large Priscilla Burke

Every day, Mosaic puts science to work right here in our community. Our reclamation team and ecologists use the latest technology and scientific methods to reclaim formerly mined lands, creating natural corridors for native wildlife and even reviving streams that haven’t existed for over a century. As a global leader in reclamation ecology, Mosaic is pioneering new environmental approaches to create vital habitats and land uses for future generations — both ours and nature’s. Grant, a Mosaic ecologist, works to reclaim land like the wetland near Hooker’s Prairie that provides an abundant source of habitat and food for a variety of plant and wildlife species. To learn more about Mosaic’s leadership in reclamation ecology, visit MosaicCo.com/Florida.
