any households added a new dog or puppy during the holiday season. As everyone is settling back into a normal daily routine, teaching the new family member basic life skills should be a part of the daily schedule. All dogs benefit from training, it is a great way to build a trusting relationship and give a dog the life skills that are very important to their safety. It has been said the dogs that have the most training also have the most freedom. A well-behaved dog is welcome in most places.
Positive Reinforcement Training All training should involve using positive reinforcement methods. Using aversive methods creates a dog who lacks confidence and in turn becomes fearful of learning new things.

If the dog responds correctly reward him. If the dog responds incorrectly take away the reward. Rewards are things the dog likes food, toys, freedom and petting. Each dog has preferences. It is not a reward unless the dog finds it rewarding.
Basic training commands Foundation skills are the basis for all other training, start with these and then increase the level of difficulty as the dog acquires more skill. Keep training sessions short, make learning fun, and be patient.
Sit
Tips: Begin this training protocol over again while standing or try it in a different location. By doing this the dog will eventually generalize that sit means sit no matter where he is or where you are standing.

After a few repetitions he should begin sitting before the hand signal is given. At this point the dog is beginning to understand that the word sit means to put his behind on the floor.

Tips: It is sometimes useful to begin training this cue while sitting on the floor with the dog. You may then graduate to sitting in a chair, and then to standing.
1. With a treat in your hand palm facing down, lure your dog to the floor. Do not let the dog have the treat if he is licking and pawing. Hold your 2. 3.

When the dog lays down with the hand signal it is time to add the word “down”. Say “down” and then give the hand signal. When the dog responds correctly say “yes” and give a treat. After several repetitions, the dog should begin to lay down on the verbal cue. When the dog is responding to the verbal command for down give him a larger reward when he responds to the verbal cue. This should increase the speed of his response to the down cue.
Tips:
You may consider using a game of tug as a reward for responding to the recall command. Once your dog is coming to you reliably in a safe fenced area, you can begin to work with him in other locations. Keep him secured with a long line, when out in public. Never use your dog’s name while correcting him, or call him to do something he finds unpleasant, like a toenail trim.

name, when he is just a couple of feet from you. When he turns to look at you, in a cheerful voice say “come”. When he moves towards you, say “yes” and when he arrives at your side, give him a treat. As your dog comes to you reliably from a few feet away add some distance. Say his name when he looks say “come” in a happy tone, as he moves towards you say “yes” and when he arrives give him a treat. When your dog becomes more reliable at coming to you from greater distances indoors, begin to work with the recall command outdoors. In a safe fenced area, you can do the exercise as you did it inside, or you may need to add a long line leash, to prevent him from wandering too far. Outdoors there are many sounds and smells that he may find too distracting. To increase the dog’s motivation to come to you outdoors, call his name, say “come”, and run away from him. When he chases after you say “yes”, stop running and when he arrives give him a treat.

As the dog improves with being able to stay when you move one step away, add an additional step. Once you can take 5 steps back or to the side, you may increase the distance. When your dog will stay with you at a distance of 10 paces for 2 minutes, you may then add a higher distraction level. such as doing the exercises in the backyard, or in the house with the door open. Be sure to have your dog on a leash if you are practicing where they may escape.
