ON THE BOX…

Scissors and sticky glue at the ready! BBC Four is encouraging the nation to get crafty with a new series of Make! Craft Britain, left. This new documentary follows ordinary men and women around the country who are having a go at a new craft, from embroidery to paper cutting. And be prepared for some real Blue Peter moments as you’re encouraged to get in on the action with some ‘how to’ demos. n On June 9, BBC Four

The most glamorous amateur sleuth in town is back. Following a hugely successful one-off Christmas special last year, Agatha Raisin is returning to our screens for a new eight-part series, following the PR-turned-detective on her quirky escapades around the Cotswolds. Stars Ashley Jensen and Hermione Norris. n Starts June 7, Sky 1

Marmite by royal appointment Veggie numbers set to mushroom!

Mum’s the word in this new comedy Three leading ladies of the silver screen give three cheers for our wonderful mums as they join forces in a new comedy, following the lives of mothers in Mother’s Day. Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Julia Roberts play women who find themselves in very different places in the run up to Mother’s Day, some more challenging than others. A light-hearted look at what it means to be a mum today. n Mother’s Day is in cinemas June 10

A quarter of the nation will be vegetarian within the next 25 years, new research has revealed. That’s the findings from a survey carried out by Linda McCartney foods, marking 25 years since the vegetarian range was launched by the late wife of ex-Beatle sir Paul. Part of the expected rise is due to people getting more health-conscious later in life, said Professor David Hughes of Imperial College, London. But animal welfare concerns and the cost of eating meat are also said to be a factor. Currently 12 per cent of Britons are meat free, a figure that has already doubled from six per cent a quarter of a century ago.

We’d love to know just who it is in the Royal household who loves the taste of Marmite! Somebody must do as the love it or loathe it spread has been granted a royal warrant for the first time – meaning that it has been on the Royal menu for at least five years. It could be that the Queen was tickled by the special commemorative jars produced for her Diamond Jubilee, renamed Ma’amite, below, or simply that she wants to give this venerable British product a boost. Marmite was part of troop rations in the First World War. So, forget cucumber sandwiches, if you really want to add a touch of class, it’s Marmite all the way!

See you in church? There’s a surprising new secret to living longer – attending church once a week or more. A study of 75,000 Christian nurses found that frequent churchgoers lived on average five months longer than their peers. There were many possible factors – from having meaningful social participation to being less likely to smoke. So should your GP suggest you head to church, rather than the gym? The study wouldn’t go that far – but does indicate that as a nation we have a very good reason to make Sunday special again.

Beauty Editor Michelle Nightingale discovers that hair loss in women is surprisingly common, but there are ways to love your locks again

W

e all want a head of healthy-looking hair, but with more than a fifth of women experiencing hair loss, you’re not alone if you think yours is thinning. Hair, just like skin, goes through lots of changes over the years. It becomes finer, loses volume and while some hair loss is common, it’s worth investigating if you feel like you’re losing more than normal.

Blushing beauty For a natural glow apply a small amount of Pixi Sheer Gel Blush (£14/11.34g) using your fingertips to the apples of your cheeks. Blend well and add a little more if needed – though less is more!

“Look for small signs such as your eyebrows looking thinner, your parting becoming wider or your scalp becoming more visible. Spotting hair loss earlier can help you get the right treatment,” explains Trichologist Sally-Ann Tarver. You might not be able to restore your hair back to the bouncy locks of your 20s, but you can definitely improve what you have and even slow down the hair-loss process.

✂ Check these out…

1

n Sally-Ann Tarver is a Consultant Trichologist for The Cotswold Trichology Centre (01386 421 703, www.cots-tri.co.uk)

See your GP… …if your hair thins suddenly. “It can be caused by thyroid conditions, particularly an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) which is often seen in post-menopausal women,” explains Sally-Ann. “Left untreated it can cause hair to thin and become dry.”

2

Up your vitamins Nutritional deficiencies and lowered levels of Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D can cause thinning. “For B12, eat more meat, fish, eggs, dairy and take a good quality Vitamin B complex,” says Sally-Ann. “See your GP about Vitamin D.”

3

Avoid fad diets “A crash diet where you drastically cut your calorie intake puts your body into a starvation state and causes it to shut down non-vital processes to conserve energy – hair growth is usually the first to go,” warns Sally-Ann.

TRY T HESE… Laser phototherapy

If you’re serious about tackling hair loss consider laser phototherapy, which you can now do at home with the Theradome LH80 PRO helmet. When worn for 20 minutes every other day it works to stimulate circulation, nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles for stronger and faster growth. It isn’t a cure though and is pricey at £649. n Theradome 0333 344 0032 www.theradomeforhairloss. co.uk

Consult an expert

Don’t ignore the signs that your hair has started to thin. “Book an appointment with a Trichologist, who will be able to help determine the cause and set you on the right track to regaining your hair, or at least slowing the decline,” says Sally-Ann. n Call 0845 604 4657 or find an accredited trichologist in your area at www.trichologists.org.uk

Choose your cut wisely

Short or medium-length styles naturally have more bounce, but steer clear of choppy layers and opt for a blunt cut to prevent the ends looking straggly. Alternatively longer locks need layers to create movement and bounce. Ask your hairdresser for advice and always keep hair healthy with regular trims.

Body building champ Feather-light, but packs a punch – the TRESemmé Max The Volume Body & Bounce Lotion (£5.50/236ml) is a champion in the making. Apply to towel-dried locks and style as normal.

Quick fix

This Swell Ultimate Volume Dry Shampoo (£20/14.5g) is pricey but if you rely on dry shampoo in-between washes it’s a worthy investment. Perfect for fine hair and no white residue is left behind.

FOOD FOR YOUR

BRAIN

What you eat can have a huge impact on how well your brain functions, explains Karen Evennett

A

healthy well-balanced diet is a great way to stay happy, focused and sharp. But there are certain foods that have an extra-special role to play, including many you’ll be only too happy to devour...

Lighten up with ice-cream

PICS: ALAMY, GETTY IMAGES, MASTERFILE, SHUTTERSTOCK

n Judy Watson has been resident nutritionist at Champney’s Health Resort for more than ten years and also has clinics in London and Hertfordshire. Visit www. judywatsonnutritionist. co.uk

All you need is a teaspoonful of ice-cream to bring you up if you’re feeling down. When scientists tested the effect of ice-cream on the brain they found it revved up activity in the so-called ‘happy zones’ which are activated when we’re enjoying ourselves. But remember you only need a little taste to feel the benefit.

Clear your brain fog with meat In fact, any animal produce will do – whether it’s meat, cheese or eggs. It’s an easy source of B12 (just 100g cheese will give you all you need in a day) which is essential for a healthy brain. Brain fog is one of the classic symptoms of a B12 deficiency. Many people have been misdiagnosed with memory problems when all they really need is more B12.

healthy eating Feel the buzz with coffee

Keep calm with greens & nuts “Nuts and greens are magnesiumrich and magnesium is naturally calming,” says nutritionist Judy Watson. Sugar and stress deplete the body’s magnesium stores so it’s extra important to cut back on sweet treats and eat more of these healthy foods if you’re going through a busy, demanding period. Other naturally calming foods include green tea (rich in relaxing theanine) and Brazil nuts, which have a high level of selenium that helps protect against depression.

You may joke that you can’t function until you’ve had your morning caffeine hit, but research by the Journal of Nutrition shows that people really do score better in mental function tests after a cup of coffee. Caffeine is a brain stimulant, but it also blocks receptors for a chemical called adenosine which normally prevents the release of the brain chemicals that make us excited. With adenosine out of the way, these spark plugs can get to work giving you a surge of energy, improving your mental performance and slowing any age-related mental decline.

Learn faster with chocolate “Stick to dark chocolate with at least 70 per cent cocoa because it’s packed with flavonoids,” advises Judy. “These are antioxidant compounds that are proven to penetrate and accumulate in the parts of your brain that are involved in learning and memory.” A study in The New England Journal of Medicine reported that the more chocolate a country consumes, the more Nobel prize winners it has! Always choose the dark stuff because milk chocolate has too little cocoa in it to be of any benefit.

Smile and say cheese reduce alzheimer’s risk with salmon “Salmon and other oily fish are packed with omega-3 fatty acids and research has shown that these – in particular one called DHA – boost brain health and even prevent the characteristic Alzheimer’s plaques from forming,” says Judy. “Taking supplements could improve your memory and concentration if they’re starting to be impaired.”

You may be avoiding cheese to keep your cholesterol in check, but a little bit of Cheddar or Camembert is good for you. “You need some cholesterol to improve the structure of your brain cells,” Judy explains. “A dose of cholesterol is also essential for your brain cells to manufacture hormones and Vitamin D, which are essential for a better mood.”

Sharpen up with eggs

Boost memory with blueberries

Eggs contain a super brain substance called choline. “It supports brain cell structure and also helps your brain make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which signals other cells to talk to each other,” says Judy. “That has the effect of sharpening your reactions and making you think faster.”

“Blueberries are a powerhouse of antioxidants which interact with nerve cells, increasing communication between them and stimulating regeneration of brain cells,” Judy says. “Scientists have suggested that eating blueberries could reverse forgetfulness and reduce senior moments.”

Every issue, our Editor at Large, Valery, will be reliving the best bits of our lives. This Valery in 1971 fortnight, the styles that launched a BLAST from the thousand snips

J

ust as much as clothes, a hairstyle can announce to the world that you’ve grown-up and want to be taken seriously. That it’s you – not your mum – who is now in charge. That first happened for me with a feather cut, aged 14. Remember those? Very layered hair – preferably fine-styled with a razor – as sported by Suzi Quatro and the girls from the New Seekers. Even better, a new, unisex hairdresser had opened up in town. No chance of your mum going there for a shampoo and set – so it was where we all got our identical cuts. There was only one problem… we were still at school, where tied-back hair was an iron rule, so ended up sporting an unflattering rat’s tail beneath layers clamped in kirby grips.

Allyson Curtis would sympathise... “In 1973 I decided, two days before I was due to begin work as a 17-year-old cadet nurse, to home-style my hair à la David Bowie. On duty I was required to tie my hair back and, as cadet nurses didn’t wear caps, the look I achieved was akin to Mr Hedgehog in nurse’s uniform”. It should have worked out better for independentminded Heather Moulson, “Everyone else was sporting feather cuts that autumn of 1971, but I wanted the glamour of a perm. It was the overpowering smell of ammonia I remember most during that grueling, threehour session. The smell stayed with me for weeks.

Meanwhile, I resembled a poodle being groomed for Crufts. I couldn’t get a brush or comb through my hair. All the girls at school laughed at me. It was truly traumatic.” Perms! So many of you got in touch with total recall of the smell, the singe and the resulting unspeakable frizz. Yes, perms have been traumatising Yours readers for many years. “In 1950 I begged my mum to let me have a perm,” writes Janet Taylor. “The machine for the perm was a massive thing with long wires and on the end of each wire was a big metal clip which they attached to each roll of hair. The girl fixed the clip and then left me in a cubicle with curtains round. After a while the clip near my neck

started burning my skin; I was in agony but kept quiet. The next day I had a massive blister across my neck and I didn’t have another perm for years.” Helen Gale however, begs to differ. “I loved my shaggy perm. It was such low maintenance. Just a visit every few months for a trim and a perm, then I could wash and leave it. I have never had another hairstyle that was as easy to care for.”

Which you could never say about beehives. Wendy Lucey recalls with admiration her friend’s perfect up-do. “Her sister was a hairdresser and she’d drive a 40-mile round trip to style it for her. She slept with a rolled towel under her neck so the shape stayed in place and she didn’t comb it from one Saturday to the next. But her hair never looked untidy as there was so much lacquer on it, I don’t think it would have moved in a Force 10 gale.” Yep – you have to commit to a beehive. “In 1960 when I was 16 I plagued my mother to let me have a beehive hair do,” remembers Glennys Wood. “She was reluctant as I had naturally curly hair. Anyway she gave in and off I went to quite a posh, expensive salon in Derby town centre. On my way home on the bus I kept looking at my reflection, hair straightened and piled high. It looked awful! As soon as I arrived home I covered my hair in Nivea cream to flatten it down. When my mother arrived home from work she said, ‘Let’s have a look then.’ I had made such a mess of it I had to have it washed out. I
