‘The truth behind my return to The Street’ Actress Beverley Callard is back where she belongs – behind the bar of the Rover’s – but she had to think long and hard before agreeing to return By Alison James hen it comes to iconic Rover’s landladies, Liz McDonald is up there with Annie Walker and Bet Lynch, and we’re thrilled she’s back in Corrie. Beverley Callard looks very happy about it, too – wearing a smile as broad as Liz’s northern accent. But when Bev was first approached about coming back, the decision required some serious thought. “While I love the Street, I was worried about returning because, three years ago, I was so very ill,” she says. “I was working so hard on Coronation Street, I

Garden w With winter approaching, how can we make our plots wildlife friendly? By Laura Bradder

house sparrow numbers have stabilised

t’s been a difficult few years for the UK’s wildlife, but we had some good news recently when the Garden BirdWatch survey by the British Trust for Ornithology revealed the decline in sparrow numbers has stabilised. The house sparrow population fell from around 12 million pairs in the Seventies, to approximately six million pairs in 2009. Thankfully, though, there has been no further decline – and some of that is down to help from the public. Grahame Madge of the RSPB, says: “There has been a considerable and growing interest among householders

I

wanting to make their gardens more wildlife-friendly. When you consider the footprint that gardens occupy across the UK, they have the potential to make an enormous contribution.” Of course, there’s still a huge amount of work to do. “Sixty per cent of monitored species are declining, and many of these are regular garden visitors. There aren’t enough nature reserves to make a difference for all these species, so the responsibility rests with people like you and me at home.” says Grahame. So, with winter on its way, which garden creatures need our help, and how can we give it?

BE BIRD FRIENDLY IN YOUR GARDEN thIs wINtER Cold, harsh winters often drive a wider variety of birds into our gardens in search of food. The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch Survey, which takes place each January, has seen an increase in species such as robins, blackbirds and collared doves. In winter, natural food can be in short supply, and birds may become dependent on garden feeders. But they need food with high fat and energy content to keep them warm, so giving them the right type of food is essential. Peanuts are rich in fat, and birds will love them crushed or grated. 22

However take care to buy peanuts specifically for birds as those for human consumption are harmful to our feathered friends. Fat balls are also perfect for winter, using suet or lard. Never use cooking fat or vegetable oils to feed birds, as the consistency means they can smear it on their feathers, destroying their natural insulation. For other good winter foods, try black sunflower seeds, cooked rice (without added salt) and uncooked porridge oats. Feed twice if possible – in the morning and early afternoon. Birds also need water every day for drinking and for bathing to keep their feathers in good condition. B see page 117 for how to make pinecone bird feeder with the grandchildren.

Frogs and toads will mostly lie dormant over winter in compost heaps or log piles, so make sure you have plenty of dead wood around if you want them to stay in your garden. They may come out to forage for food in milder periods of weather, so don’t worry if you see them out and about when you least expect it. Some frogs, and other amphibians such as newts, will hibernate at the bottom of the pond. You only really need to worry if your pond freezes over – but with the bad winters we’ve had in the past few years, that’s a big possibility! If your pond is frozen over, toxic gases can’t escape Common garden and the water frogs will hide in is left lacking compost heaps in oxygen. as winter approaches, it’s a good idea to buy more oxidizing pond plants, and clear some of the sediment and debris from the bottom of your pond. If you have a pump, leave it running over winter if possible. Once the cold weather sets in, leave a ball, or floating object, on the surface of your pond – this can be easily removed to leave a hole in the ice should your pond freeze over, allowing air and light to flow through. how to build a hedgehog home Never pour hot water or salt onto the This is very easy to make. Hedgehogs are among Britain’s mostloved, and sadly most endangered species, with numbers having declined by a shocking 25 per cent in the last decade. But there are things you can do to encourage these spiky friends back into your garden. During autumn, hedgehogs will be looking to feed on small insects and slugs in order to store up their fat reserves for the hibernation period. They’re great natural pest controllers, but if you do want to use slug pellets as well, choose wildlife friendly versions to avoid causing any harm to hedgehogs. You can also help by putting out supplementary food – hedgehogs can eat many things from our own diets, but under no circumstances should you feed them bread or milk. Cooked vegetables, fresh fruit and cat or dog food (dried or tinned) are ideal. Choose tinned food in jelly not gravy and avoid fish flavours. and be sure to leave out plenty of water, too. Hedgehogs tend to leave hibernation as late as possible, usually from November onwards. Their nests are made of mosses, leaves and other garden debris – so be sure to check for them before building any winter fires! alternatively, you can make your own ‘hedgehog home’ – it’s a great way to get the grandchildren involved in conservation.

Aldi Lacura Multi Intensive Restorative Serum, £3.49/50ml

Murad Time Release Retinol Concentrate for Deep Wrinkles,

The claim: Formulated especially for mature skin, this serum smooths skin and helps improve suppleness. Barbara’s verdict: The packaging is really nice and it comes in a box – it certainly looks more expensive than its budget price tag. The instructions were clear and straight away my skin felt very hydrated. It dried quickly and I could moisturise and pop on my make-up without having to wait for it to sink in. I can’t see any huge changes to my wrinkles, but my skin does feel softer. Final thoughts: It’s great value, but hasn’t won me over completely yet.

£65/15ml The claim: Contains wrinkle-fighting ingredients like Retinol to reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles, Matrixyl Synthe’6 to help rebuild collagen, plus Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramide-3 to maintain moisture. Linda’s verdict: I wasn’t at all impressed with the packaging – I expected it to look much better for the price. I did however find a little went a long way and it sunk in immediately leaving my skin 3 looking smoother and feeling 5 hydrated. Long term my skin texture has slightly improved and I have had comments on how radiant I look! Final thoughts: It does recommend that for best results you should use with other Murad products, but a bit too expensive I think.

Thank you! We want to say a huge thank you to our lovely panel of testers who have worked so hard this year to bring you the best of the bunch.

ON TEST Maureen tested…

Sanctuary Spa Active Reverse Skincare Power Peptide Serum, £25/30ml

The claim: Contains Matrixyl Synthe’6 to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as ingredients to smooth and rejuvenate the skin. Maureen’s verdict: I don’t usually use a serum but will definitely from now on as my skin was so soft immediately after application. I found it dried very quickly and even helped my foundation glide on smoothly. With continued use my skin certainly looks smoother and the fine lines on my forehead are reduced. I also found 41/2 that using a serum meant I only needed to 5 use a tiny amount of day and night cream. Final thoughts: I noticed the benefits of using this serum after just a week and would have given top marks if it was a little cheaper – definitely a luxury treat.

Diana tested…

Avon Anew Reversalist serum, £27/30ml The claim: Formulated to help boost skin’s own repair process and recreate fresh, new looking skin. Diana’s verdict: Although I don’t use serum every day, I do apply one rather than a moisturiser on days when I exercise as I find them lighter. This serum absorbed quickly and left my skin moisturised without being greasy. Straight away it felt softer and healthier overall. Long term I didn’t see any big differences, but to me it’s more about preserving 31/2 5 my skin and helping to keep it as nourished as possible. Final thoughts: I liked it, but it’s tricky to get the last of the product out of the tube, so for that reason I think it’s a bit pricey.

21/2 Jane tested…

Aubrey Revitalizing Therapy Serum,

5

£13.49/10ml The claim: All-natural and made with Organic Rosa Mosqueta Rose Hip Seed oil, this intensely moisturising serum firms and restores your skin’s natural balance. Jane’s verdict: It isn’t very clear that this serum is for the face and I did find it a little runny and greasy, having to wash my hands after applying. It’s smells quite oily, but despite looking greasy it did sink in quickly and I could apply my moisturiser or foundation almost straight away. After use my skin looked fresh, healthy and felt wonderfully soft. Final thoughts: Even though my skin felt so soft, I wouldn’t buy it purely because it’s messy and doesn’t smell of much.

‘I’m much more daring with make-up now and have loved trying so many diferent products.’ Maureen ‘Being a tester has certainly changed how I buy beauty products – now I read the ingredients closely before considering the price.’ Linda ‘I loved being a tester! I now feel more confident going to beauty counters to ask for advice and I’ve realised it’s fun to experiment with make-up rather than always playing it safe.’ Diana ‘Being a Yours beauty tester has opened my eyes to new brands and proved that expensive products are not always better than cheaper versions.’ Jane ‘I feel so lucky to have been a Yours tester and it’s made me much more adventurous when it comes to trying new brands.’ Barbara

Stay pain free & supple!

Follow our easy exercise plan to help manage joint pain and keep your body feeling strong By health editor, Rebecca Speechley

Meet our expert Professor Phil Conaghan is professor of musculoskeletal medicine at the University of Leeds and a spokesman for Arthritis Research UK

hen stiff and painful joints are getting you down exercise might be the last thing on your mind. But following our easy step-by-step moves developed by Arthritis Research UK could help to ease your joint pain and help you to stay supple. “Moving your joints could help to ease your pain straight away,” says Professor Phil Conaghan. “More research is needed to establish exactly why but it could be that movement may reduce the fluid that accumulates in the lining tissue of the inflamed joint. Keep following the exercises and they will strengthen the supporting muscles around your joints, leading to a bigger reduction in pain.” These exercises are a great starting point. Once your muscles are stronger you could start trying more aerobic activities such as walking or cycling, which could help you to lose weight too. Whatever you choose to do, make sure it is both achievable and enjoyable and you’ll reap the longterm benefits.
