He’s calm rather than panicky and if all else failed, at least he’d make you – and himself – laugh. But he wasn’t laughing at one point – anything but – during the filming of his latest documentary, in which he joins a mission to return endangered lions to the Kora National Park in Kenya where, in the Seventies, legendary conservationist George Adamson set up a camp to rescue lions and release them back into the wild. “The director and I somehow got separated from the rest of the crew while we were walking through the Kenyan bush,” Martin (52) recalls. “Then somehow we both became entangled in a large thorn bush. It was lethal, with the kind of thorns that, if you try to move, rip you to shreds. “That was hairy enough but then we heard the sound of bells clanking which we knew meant we must be very close to a group of Somali herdsmen – Somali herdsmen armed with AK47 assault rifles which, let’s just say, they don’t carry around for show! In fact, George Adamson was murdered by Somali herdsmen 25 years ago and the camp completely destroyed. We did start to panic – it was very, very frightening, but we knew we had to disentangle ourselves. It’s probably not too dramatic to say that our lives literally depended on it!” Miraculously, after a struggle, they did manage to break free, and found their way back to camp. “When you’re making a TV documentary you tend to think you’ll always be OK, that you’re kind of invincible and that nothing can touch

you,” he goes on. “That experience taught me this isn’t the case at all.” In Martin Clunes & A Lion Called Mugie, Martin joins forces with his good friend Tony Fitzjohn, who worked closely with the late George Adamson for many years. The two men travel across Kenya to collect Mugie, a one-year-old lion that was orphaned at three weeks old. But there were a few hairy moments for Martin when he initially started interacting with the animal. “I was apprehensive about walking
with Mugie because he didn’t know me. He ran at me a bit and his play fighting was challenging. I tried to make him like me by being the one to feed him, but he didn’t want it. I am sure if I’d been edgy the claws would have come out. He gave me ‘the look’ – and those paws were big!” For Martin, the documentary is a labour of love that’s been years in the making. “My interest in lions dates back to when my mother took me to see the film Born Free as a little boy – the famous movie about George

Adamson, his wife Joy and Elsa, the orphan lioness they saved,” he recalls. “It stirred something in me and I went on to read all the Born Free books – even though I was never a bookish child. Making this programme meant I could realise my childhood dream of reliving the Born Free story.” Now 25 years on from George Adamson’s death, Tony Fitzjohn has rebuilt Kampi Ya Simba in Kora National Park (which means ‘camp of lions’ in Swahili) at the invitation of the Kenyan government. “Everything has been perfectly

Martin is hoping Martin Clunes & A Lion Called Mugie will also make us aware of the plight of lions in Africa. “Although elephants and rhinos get most of the publicity, lions in Africa are facing an equally serious crisis,” he says. “While there are about 500,000 elephants left on the continent, there are only 30,000 lions. If something isn’t done, they could die out in the wild in less than 10 years.” With his passion for animals, we can’t help wondering why Martin didn’t consider becoming a vet. He bursts out laughing at the question. “I wasn’t smart enough, I’m afraid. You’ve got to be super-smart to be a vet – I’d never have made the grade.” Perhaps not, but we’re kind of glad that’s the case. We like seeing Martin on TV. “You’re too kind,” he replies. “I’m actually doing another animal documentary at the moment, called Man and Beast, and it explores the relationship different people around the world have with their animals. For the first time, competitors didn’t have to sing in their native language, so Swedish ABBA were able to perform Waterloo in English. Not only did it win Eurovision, it then shot to number one in the UK – and even got to number six in the American charts. More smash hits followed – SOS, Mamma Mia and Money, Money, Money. ABBA became a world-wide supergroup, their success on a par with The Beatles. Björn Ulvaeus (lyrics) And Benny Andersson (melodies) had been writing together since 1966. Agnetha Fältskog – who married Bjorn in 1971, had been a moderately successful performer as had Anni-Frid Lyngstad, who was already divorced with two children when she got together with Benny in 1969. nothing for your street cred. Winning Eurovision wasn’t cool, nor were ABBA’s matching outfits and smiling faces. Even Agnetha’s bright blue eyeshadow (not very Biba!) reinforced the cheesy pop image. It made no difference to their success. ABBA fever grew and the hits piled up – Dancing Queen, Take a Chance on Me, Thank You for the Music – they even made a feature film, ABBA The Movie. They had taken centre stage. And yet... the strain was starting to show. Agnetha not only hated being seen as a pin-up, she also missed her two young children when they toured. Anni-Frid’s personal life hit the headlines when it turned out that her real father was a Nazi who had met her mother during the occupation of Norway. Her family had fled to Sweden postwar to escape vilification. A reunion with her father did not go well. Shadows were falling across ABBA’s sunlit world. The clue was in the lyrics of Knowing Me, Knowing You, “there is nothing we can do”. Agnetha and Bjorn announced their divorce in 1979 with Agnetha saying: “When you talk about everything and you still don’t get through to one another, it’s a

Fab all-rounder
Max Factor Face Finity All-Day Flawless 3-in-1 Foundation, SPF 20, £11.99/30ml The claim: A primer, concealer and FLAWLESS foundation in one FINISH to give long-lasting coverage. Gill says: I have three different foundations on the go at the moment and all are higher priced, so I was interested to see what results this one gave. It has a lighter coverage than I’d normally wear, but I found with a second application it was adequate. It isn’t greasy or sticky and dries quite quickly. Even though the coverage is light, it has great staying power. I agree with the ‘all-day flawless’ claim! Verdict: A little too light for me, but great value as it would 45 cut down on the additional products needed.
No7 Lift & Luminate Foundation, SPF 15, £16.50/30ml The claim: Formulated to lift and firm skin with a combination of ingredients that also brighten and moisturise. Gives a smooth, even coverage. Pat says: I use WINNER foundation every day and was so impressed with this one that it has easily become a favourite. It’s easy to apply and blends well, giving great coverage without feeling oily 5 5 or looking unnatural. In fact, it feels very creamy and smooth on the skin – more like a moisturising cream. Straight away my skin looked brighter, glowing and didn’t feel at all dry. It easily covered up my dark patches, so I’d happily use it day or night. It’s good value and would last ages as you only need a small amount to get great coverage. Verdict: I don’t have anything negative to say about this product – it does everything it claims!
Revlon Age Defying with DNA Advantage Makeup, SPF 20, £13.99/30ml The claim: Combines advanced anti-ageing skincare technology to fight the signs of ageing and gives a flawless coverage. Valery says: I was quite impressed with the quality of this foundation and that it left my skin glowing. My usual foundation is double the price,

but the performance of this one is just as good, but feels lighter – almost like you’re not wearing foundation. It isn’t greasy or drying and is easy to blend to a natural finish. It worked fine with my other skincare and make-up products and worked just as well without a primer underneath. I would happily wear this foundation day or night and it has an impressive SPF 20. Verdict: This foundation is great value, so I’ll definitely keep using it.

L’Oreal Paris NutriLift Gold Foundation, SPF 20, £14.29/25ml The claim: Combines age-fighting ingredients and gold micro particles for firmer and smoother skin. Sandra says: This foundation blended easily and I only needed a tiny amount. It gives good coverage and really felt like I wasn’t wearing anything. The finish felt a little powdery and I could feel the gold particles, but these did help brighten my skin. The overall effect was light and natural, so it would be perfect for summer. Had good staying power and lasted all day, but personally I prefer a fuller coverage. I did notice a lifting effect after application, but this didn’t last. 35 My usual foundation is much more expensive, so I do think it’s good value for a trusted brand. Verdict: I’ve only marked it down as I prefer a fuller coverage.
5 steps to a flawless finish
1
Find your perfect shade – all year round. Visit your local beauty counter and ask them to help find your shade. Just remember your skin tone changes with the seasons, so one foundation is unlikely to suit you all year round.
2
Allow your moisturiser enough time to sink in fully. To give your foundation a chance at staying put all day, don’t rush this step.
Light performance Clarins Skin Illusion Foundation, SPF 10, £27/30ml Margaret says: It looks very watery, but actually blended nicely. However, I wasn’t impressed with the coverage it gave and had to apply a second layer to cover redness. Initially it worked fine with my other make-up products, but I did find I had to reapply my blusher later in the day, which I wouldn’t have to with my normal foundation. I wouldn’t say it has much staying power and throughout the day it settled into my lines making my skin look patchy and dry. Verdict: I love Clarins usually, but this foundation was disappointing. 2 5

Use a primer. It may seem like an unnecessary expense, but a primer helps hide imperfections and blur fine lines and will allow your foundation to perform at its best.
4
Apply with a foundation brush, or sponge. You’ll get better coverage – just make sure you blend well.
5
Conceal after foundation. That way you only need to use it on those areas that really need it.

Actress Claire Goose (39) talks about her new TV role, appreciating what you have and the pains and pleasures of parenthood ✢ Determination is a great strength
✢ I have more fun nowadays
My character in Undeniable, Jane Fielding, has this ability to persevere and get what she wants at all costs. I think I have that resolve too – my parents said it was apparent when I was quite young and I see it sometimes in my daughter, Amelia, who is only four! But that’s not a bad thing. In life you will get constant knockbacks and I think that sort of resilience helps enormously.
Amelia loves it when we put music on in the living room, dance around together and act silly. Being a mum has certainly taught me to take life less seriously and to loosen up a bit.
✢ I was lucky to have such a great mix of parents My mum always encouraged me to give things a go, whereas Dad was more the voice of reason – he’d never sugar-coat things and was very practical. They never tried to tell me what I should and shouldn’t do.
