With the new series of Great British Bake Off underway we chat to queen of cakes Mary Berry and reveal some behind-the-scenes secrets of the hit show By Christine Smith he has sent us all cake crazy and inspired budding bakers and novices alike to take up the baking challenge. But that’s not the only effect Great British Bake Off’s Mary Berry has had on some of us – for the show has also unexpectedly turned her into a sex symbol. The 79-year-old queen of cakes, who has been happily married for nearly 50 years, admits she has received ‘marriage proposals’ in the post from male admirers, and that many men are coming up to her to tell her how much they enjoy baking. “It is odd, but yes, I have had marriage proposals!” Not that Mary is planning to take up any of the offers. She dotes on her husband, Paul, and even when filming Bake Off, doesn’t like to be away from home for too long. “I am nearly always home every night. I am boringly traditional. It’s very important to me,” she explains. “We do have respect for each other,” she adds as she talks about the success of her own marriage. “It’s very easy to fly off the handle but it’s better to think about it and not have a row. We never have rows.” We caught up with Mary on the set of Bake Off during filming of the new series now showing on BBC1, which she says is the best yet. “The standard of bakers is incredible,” she explains. “It’s not been about the presentation, with things like grass and monuments around the cake, but it’s been about the bake, which is

‘The proposal I had to turn down’ what Paul Hollywood and I like.” The bakers, of all ages, are busy making a sponge cake in the famous tent that is decked out in blue, green and mauve colours. A trestle table is lined with jugs filled with flowers. Mary watches the contestants, who all remain incredibly calm as they put the final touches to their bakes. She never interferes – even if things are going horribly wrong. “We can’t,” she explains. “We are here to judge. We stay at a different hotel too. We will encourage them but we can’t tell them what to do. We are seeking perfection and we know what we want.” For Mary, the biggest challenge on Bake Off this year has been deciding which baker should leave, as they have all been so exceptional.
‘Paul (Hollywood) and I have had a few disagreements over contestants when it’s very close’
“Paul and I have had a few disagreements,” she admits. “When it is very close, we need to explain to each other why we think someone should go. Paul puts his point across well. I put my point forward and together, we come to a decision.” So who has been the greatest influence in Mary’s career? “I really was inspired by Elizabeth David. She wasn’t a trained cook but she could write. In the modern day, I look to all the specialists – Ken Hom for Chinese, Rick Stein for fish. It’s great to specialise.” A doting wife, mother and grandmother, Mary’s spare time is very precious and

❙ star chat ❙ when not caring for her family or baking, she likes playing tennis, going for a walk and catching up with friends. Does she ever feel like putting her feet up and tucking into beans on toast? “I have had beans on toast before,” she chuckles. “But with an egg on top!” So what’s next for Mary as she approaches 80? With more than 70 cookery books under her belt, she has been asked to film some more family baking shows for the BBC. She says she has no desire to work in America and feels she has been lucky enough to achieve so much in life. “I am just going to carry on doing what I am doing and enjoy every minute,” she says. “We all have so much fun on set and I do love Mel and Sue very much. 7am Bakers arrive for a cup of tea and a rundown of all the ingredients while the 40-strong crew, including a home economist, set up everything for the day’s bake. Mary also arrives for her make-up. 7.30-8am Mel and Sue, pictured right and inset below with this year’s contestants, arrive for make-up. 8.30am Paul arrives to get ready for the judging. 9am The bakers are filmed walking into the famous tent. It’s been carefully decorated with all the trademark country furniture. There are two fridges and two freezers dotted around the workstations. The ovens are tested weekly to make sure there are no discrepancies, giving a baker an unfair advantage. The home economist makes sure all the ingredients are on the table ready for the Bake Off. 9.15am Bake Off is launched. Depending on what the contestants are making, it can last from two to four-and-a-half hours. Six hours is devoted to the final. The bake is filmed in real time with every second counting. YOURS

The films that shaped our
CHILDHOOD DREAMS… Classic children’s film Mary Poppins is 50 this year – so what better excuse to remember the best-loved films of our childhood? By Valery McConnell ary Poppins flew onto our screens 50 years ago this year and remains one of the most loved family films of all time. The films we fell in love with as children stay locked in our hearts because we believed in their magic world. Children ever since have wished they could be Jane and Michael, jumping into pavement pictures and floating to the ceiling. Directed by one of the most successful children’s film directors of all time, Robert Stevenson, his credits include The Love Bug, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing. He didn’t tell the young actors, Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber, about the magic carpet bag – so their astonished looks when Julie Andrews pulls out a hat stand are genuine! Last year’s film, Saving Mr Banks, revealed how difficult it was for Walt Disney to bring P L Travers’ books to the screen because the author hated it being ‘Disneyfied’. But she was in favour of Julie Andrews as the lead. Julie went on to star in another family classic, The Sound of Music, and, however much she wanted to get away from her wholesome image, they remain her most remembered films. When we think of much-loved

children’s film stars, Liz Taylor doesn’t automatically spring to mind yet she starred in two classics – the original Lassie Come Home, and National Velvet, where a girl and a horse win the Grand National. Hard to believe they were made in 1943 and 1944 and turned the 12-year-old Elizabeth into a child star. Incidentally, the original Lassie was actually played by a dog called Pal – and all the Lassies in the many sequels and remakes have been descended from Pal. So many films we fell in love with as children involve heroic animals winning against all odds. In 1963, Disney’s The Incredible Journey saw a labrador, a Siamese cat and a bull terrier stick together on a journey through the Canadian wilderness to be reunited with their owners. We didn’t notice that Bodger the male bull terrier was obviously female! The 1993 remake had voiceovers and a sub-plot, but can’t match the original for the emotion of the happy ending. But not all animal films have happy endings. Ring of Bright Water, the 1969 true story of the touching relationship between a man and his pet otter, Mij, ends with the otter’s untimely death. That was also the year that Kes – the bitter-sweet story of a working-class boy and his love for a kestrel, was made. Both show that the

British weren’t afraid to make a tougher film than Disney would have allowed. He made children weep when Bambi’s mother died, but mostly he agreed with Thumper, “If you can’t say nothing nice, don’t say nothing at all.” But Walt was a muchloved part of our childhood and depending on when we were born, we’ll all have our animated film favourite. If it is 1953’s Peter Pan, you agree with Michael Jackson – which is why he named his ranch Neverland. If it’s 1955’s Lady and the Tramp, the iconic spaghettieating scene nearly didn’t make it to the screen as Walt wasn’t keen on it. And if it is 1961’s 101 Dalmatians, then look out for cameos from Lady and Tramp – both dogs are in the twilight barking scene! Nobody over 55
can have escaped a Hayley Mills film. The very British star of Wild at Heart spent her childhood as America’s most popular child actress in The Parent Trap (remade in 1998 with Lindsay Lohan) and That Darn Cat. She was actually the last person to receive a Juvenile Oscar for her title role in Pollyanna. Many years later she admitted that she wished she had got a decent education instead. Her acting commitments meant she left school with no formal qualifications at all. From The Wizard of Oz, through Oliver via Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Bedknobs and Broomsticks, we’ve been transported on miraculous musical adventures over the years. Yet the film that holds a special place in so many hearts is the small-scale but exquisite The Railway Children, directed by Lionel Jeffries in 1970. It doesn’t matter that now we know that Sally Thomsett, who played 11-yearold Phyllis was actually 20 – and three years older than Jenny Agutter. Like all the best children’s films, the film upholds the power of love to conquer all and bring us safe to those we care most about, a message that never dates. ✢ Do you have a favourite film from childhood? If it’s your birthday this fortnight…
… you are Leo like Sarah Brightman, born August 14, 1960. Leos radiate a wonderful energy that attracts an audience very easily. Life is rarely without adventure or a spot of drama when you are a Leo! You are a loyal friend and tend to know your own mind, while natural dignity and pride means you dislike pettiness and like to shine. Sarah has aviation planet Uranus with her Sun in Leo, making for an unusual character with unusual ambitions. As that’s now being triggered by adventure planet Jupiter, it seems rather fitting that she’s preparing to fly to the International Space Station in 2015.
