2016 YEAR INÂ REVIEW

The reopening of the Speed Art Museum in March of 2016 gives us all tremendous and ongoing opportunities to celebrate the success of this amazing achievement and to experience the visual art that lives inside and outside of these walls. The transformative power of experiencing great art connects us to each other, to various cultures from around the world, across borders and to those next door. Through the lens of an artist we are asked to keep an open mind, experience differing perspectives, provocative ideas, and gain new insights into the shared human experience across time. The Speed presents a diversity of ideas on a daily basis through scholarly research, curatorial prowess, and inclusive and extensive interpretative and educational programming. It is very tangible. It can be experienced by taking a stroll through one of the stunning galleries to visit our own world-class collection or by seeking out a favorite piece with a special memory. It can be shared by partaking in the many lively social or lecture offerings. Taking in a film or special exhibition, stopping by the Museum Store, and grabbing a bite to eat at Wiltshire at the Speed is always a pleasurable experience. And of course, playing games and making art in Art Sparks is great fun for young and old alike. All of these activities demonstrate daily that the Speed is an engaging and inspirational destination. The Speed you visit and enjoy today is the product of hundreds of talented minds, and countless hours of work and research. From the dedicated staff and volunteers to generous donors and members like you, we all have had a hand in building the Speed Art Museum of today and for tomorrow. I encourage you to renew your membership in the Speed and return often this year. Your support is appreciated and truly important. Thank you for making the Speed a glowing cultural beacon for Louisville and beyond. Sincerely,

Martha Slaughter Chair, Speed Art Museum Board of Trustees

MEMBERS MATTER Being a member of the Speed Art Museum is more than a financial contribution, it is strength in numbers. Members are our greatest advocates and most enthusiastic participants. The Speed is an engaging and energized hub of creativity because of your involvement. Your membership contribution makes a big impact. General members of the Speed Art Museum represent our most broad base of support. Our most loyal members, many of whom have been involved for more than thirty years, supported us through the expansion and renovation, from Local Speed to the new Speed Art Museum. That general membership core grew from 553 to over 3,000 households, with more than 1,000 new memberships. This impressive growth provided critical operating support for the Museum that helps fund programs and exhibitions that engage all people.

Get Excited! Membership is your ticket to experience the Speed Art Museum! The Speed is a gathering place where you can join family, friends, and fellow members in the appreciation of art and good company. Whether you are excited by a big party, casual get together, or family day, Speed membership provides you the best access to everything the Museum offers. This has been a particularly exciting year for members of the Speed. Members saw the new Museum before the general public; enjoyed the lively exhibition preview party for Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture; enrolled their children in Summer Camps; participated in workshops; used Double Discount Days in the Museum Store; dined in Wiltshire at the Speed; watched films in the Cinema; heard world-renowned experts in the Global Speed lecture series; listened to classical music in the Concert Series; engaged in Art Sparks; and so much more—all with added benefits from their membership.

A MUSEUM FOR EVERYONE Engaging programs at the Speed Art Museum connect visitors of all ages and backgrounds to art. From guided tours to dynamic summer art camps and art-making workshops, the Speed welcomes everyone. As one guest wrote: “Louisville now has a museum for the whole community.”

Detecting Success We continue to reach into local schools through our eight Art Detectives crates. This interdisciplinary school outreach program brings original works of art from the Speed’s education collection into classrooms in a fun, handson exploration. In the 2015–2016 school year, we went into 43 schools and reached 7,390 students. We expanded into Floyd County/New Albany, where the program has been integrated into their elementary school curriculum. It’s our hope that Art Detectives extends beyond our time in the classroom, and students understand how art connects to almost every other subject they study.

Community Outreach Wall Together, which partners Speed Art Museum educators with local nonprofit organizations in a multi-visit program to create art that is displayed at the Museum, continues to bring the community’s voice into the Museum. The Speed worked with the Academy @ Shawnee for the exhibition Humans of the Speed. Photography students from the Academy captured recordings—in the form of audio files and photographs—to commemorate the Speed’s reopening. For the Wall Together exhibition, Abstraction and Emotion: Experiments in Painting, the Speed worked with nine young boys from Uspiritus, an organization that provides vital services to Kentucky’s youth and families. The young artists, ranging in age from seven- to ten- years old, used unconventional painting methods to make art inspired by the Speed’s contemporary collection. Each artwork illustrated how responses to abstract art vary greatly based on individual perspectives and experiences; however, the common emotional experiences that we all share united the artists in their understanding of themselves and their peers.

“ My students saw that seemingly common or simple objects can have bigger meaning. Light bulbs came on during and since this lesson.” —Grades 9 –10 Teacher

Learning Outside the Classroom This fall, the Speed launched a school tour program for K–12 students. Students travel to the Museum from Jefferson, Oldham, Ohio, Meade, Madison, Berea, Hardin, Bullitt, Anderson, Nelson, Boyd, Fayette, Clinton, Grayson, and Washington Counties in Kentucky; Clark, Posey, Harrison, and Floyd Counties in Indiana; and, we even had a group from Erie County, Ohio, to expand our reach to a three-state area. Our programs for early learners and their families provide workshops, tours, and resources designed to spark language development, encourage compassion and empathy, promote school readiness, and help families feel comfortable in the museum. 64% of the participants in the Speed’s early childhood programs are from low and moderate income families, and partnerships with organizations like the YMCA, Kentucky Refugee Ministries Family Center, Harvey Browne Preschool, and Shawnee Head Start have helped us expand our reach to new family audiences. “ I didn’t expect the museum to be so welcoming for young children.” —Parent of Preschool Student The Speed was excited to launch a partnership with the University of Louisville Athletic Department with a kick-off party that was attended by 316 student athletes. This fall, we also paired student athletes with 26 middle school boys from the West End School on a collaborative art project that was on view at the Museum and was featured at a women’s basketball game at the YUM! Center.

Sparking Interest at the Museum The new, reimagined Art Sparks attracts visitors of all ages. In its first eight months, more than 43,000 guests have visited—around 54% of all museum visitors. Art Sparks is no longer “just for kids.” This truly one-of-a-kind space inspires conversations about looking at, making, and talking about art. “I didn’t know museums could be so fun!” —8-year-old visitor to Art Sparks

SPEED CINEMA March 2016 marked the launch of the Speed Cinema. Over 7,000 people attended screenings. With its state-of-the-art 4K digital, 35mm, and 16mm film projection, the 138-seat cinema was the newest museum-based art house cinema made possible by the generosity of Victoire and Owsley Brown III. A lively mix of screenings included restorations, foreign films, American independent films, animations, children’s films, area premieres, interactive cinema, virtual reality projects, panel discussions, and experimental cinema. To further media literacy, programs were enhanced with program notes, curatorial introductions, post-screening discussions, and guest speakers. Additional support was provided by the Speed’s newest collector group, the Cinephiles. The season was highlighted by visiting filmmakers such as the Louisvilleborn Mark Abraham with the sneak preview of I Saw the Light, director Laura Dunn and producer Jef Sewell with their sold-out run of the documentary The Seer: A Portrait of Wendell Berry, director Zachary Treitz and producer Steven Schardt with their Kentucky-set feature film Men Go to Battle, and director Louise Osmond and racehorse breeders Jan and Brian Vokes with the documentary Dark Horse. Weekend-long runs included documentaries such as The First Monday in May; feature films such as Little Men and Sunset Song; award-winning foreign films such as Chevalier (Greece), Marguerite (France), and Cemetery of Splendor (Thailand); film restorations such as Belladonna of Sadness and Chimes at Midnight; and children’s films such as The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun and The Red Balloon. Speed Cinema also launched the CineCuisine series featuring dinner inspired by the films Ants on a Shrimp and King Georges, and The Defenders, in which local celebrities Will Oldham and Todd Brashear shared guilty pleasure films. Partnerships within the community included the Flyover Film Festival premiere of the documentary Henry Caudill: A Man of Courage. The Louisville Tango Society accompanied screenings of Our Last Tango. Aukram Burton, Executive Director of the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage, provided a discussion for the digital restoration of Oscar Micheaux’s classic silent film Within Our Gates. The University of Louisville’s Arts and Partnerships program co-presented a day-long program of panels. These community partnerships helped broaden support for the program and will continue to characterize Speed Cinema in the future. 19

A Financial Overview

EXPLODING INTO VIEW Over the course of the fiscal year, the Speed Art Museum’s exhibitions moved from the intimate confines of the Local Speed gallery in NuLu to the grand spaces of the new Speed’s North and South Buildings. From images of Paris street life in the late 1800s to examples of twenty-first-century street fashion, the Speed’s exhibitions shared art from across the centuries and from around the world. The Museum’s farewell exhibition at Local Speed, From City to Country: Nineteenth-Century French Prints, featured etchings drawn from the Speed’s rich collection of works on paper. This small glimpse of the collection gave way to over 900 works of art installed for the Speed’s reopening in March 2016, filling all the museum’s galleries. After more than three years shut away from our visitors, the collection exploded back into view, enhanced by loans from generous individuals and local partners like 21c Museum Hotel. The Speed also partnered with the staff and collections of the University of Louisville Photographic Archives to create the exhibition, Kentucky Captured: Photographs Inspired by the Bluegrass State as part of our reopening. The Speed’s new exhibition schedule launched with Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture, the first design and fashion exhibition ever held at the Museum. Over 150 sneakers, from the first track shoes to contemporary designs by artists like Kehinde Wiley, filled the North Building exhibition space. Dazzling graffiti by local artist Braylyn Stewart accompanied the exhibition. In the new South Building gallery, Gaela Erwin: Reframing the Past presented the pastels of contemporary Louisville artist Gaela Erwin. Erwin’s intimate explorations of her subjects (often herself and her sister) were inspired by works in the Speed’s collection—the reinterpretation of old into new echoed the new Speed’s appreciation of the past alongside its embrace of the present.

There is always something new on view at the Speed.

BUILDING OUR COLLECTION During the 2016 fiscal year, 55 works were added to the collection, all as gifts or as acquisitions supported by our donors. Thank you! The single largest gift during the fiscal year came from Mr. Gordon W. Bailey of California. Mr. Bailey generously donated over 30 works focused on contemporary African American artists including Willie Birch, Sam Doyle, Charlie Lucas, and Purvis Young. Speed Contemporary acquired Nari Ward’s We the People (created in 2011) and, with additional support of Speed Contemporary members and others, Ebony Patterson’s Golden Rest – Dead Treez (created in 2015). Cary Brown and Steve Epstein, Stephen Reily and Emily Bingham, and Eleanor Bingham Miller supported the acquisition of two large-scale works by the contemporary photographer Adam Fuss. The Museum’s Charter Collectors contributed the charming My Wife and Daughter painted in 1917–18 by the American Impressionist, Willard Metcalf. Individual members of the Charter Collectors and others came together to underwrite the purchase of an outstanding Spanish Baroque sculpture by Luisa Ignacia Roldán. All acquisitions listed alphabetically by donor.

A FINANCIAL OVERVIEW The Speed Art Museum has been the beneficiary of gifts from a number of donors whose generosity has shaped the Museum’s future. Mrs. Hattie Bishop Speed, the Speed’s first donor, built the Museum in memory of her husband, James Breckinridge Speed, and left a collection of art and artifacts. In 1996, a bequest from Mrs. Alice Speed Stoll, J.B. Speed’s granddaughter, gave the Speed financial stability and the ability to upgrade operations and the art collection. The Board of Governors secured Mrs. Stoll’s bequest in an endowment, the returns from which may be used as the board directs. The Speed’s board has approved a policy that a percentage of the market value of endowed funds, calculated using a 12-quarter rolling average, may be used to support operations annually. This amount is utilized to partially support the annual operations. In addition to income generated from the endowment, which supports the maintenance of the collection and the building, the Speed receives programmatic support from a number of generous individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies. These additional funds allowed the Speed to provide programming and exhibitions at the Museum’s satellite space, Local Speed, during the expansion.

Highlights The Speed Art Museum’s Changing Speed Capital Campaign has raised $66 million, $2 million of which was raised in the 2015–16 fiscal year. Funds raised went toward the expansion and renovation of the Speed. The Speed’s operating endowment, the returns from which are used for museum needs, was valued at $49 million. The Speed raised almost $6 million for operations from donations to the annual fund, program sponsorship, corporate and individual memberships, grants, tributes, and from earned income.
