STORIES
FROM THE YEAR
OCTOBER 2020 - SEPTEMBER 2021
OCTOBER 2020 - SEPTEMBER 2021
I am filled with gratitude and pride. Since my arrival in late August, I have been immersed in an institution and constituencies that are strong, open-minded, generous, and innovative. While navigating through a life-threatening pandemic the Speed continued being an invaluable destination for Louisvillians and Kentuckians and offered a safe and healthy environment for visitors from near and far, in addition to hosting virtual programs. While still in the interview process for the coveted position of Director of the Speed, I was deeply moved and inspired by the museum’s Promise Witness and Remembrance exhibition. It seems almost impossible to react to a tragedy as profound as Breonna Taylor’s killing, however the Speed thoughtfully and courageously reflected upon this unjust death through works of art reflecting the African American experience in this country and the loving words of a Black mother and community shaken by grief and an inexplicable sense of loss. Furthermore, the Speed under
the leadership of former director Stephen Reily, guest curator Allison Glenn and our community engagement strategist Toya Northington, assured that the narratives of the works of art by black artists living and working in the US were connected and brought to life through Louisville’s experience, myriad conversations, and the wisdom of a local steering committee.
In continuation of this important work, in early 2022 we will hire our first Director of Equity and Inclusion as an important step in the Museum’s ongoing commitment to being a more equitable, inclusive, and welcoming place for its staff and audiences.
It is paramount that the Speed as a leading cultural institution continues this important journey. An inclusive, diverse vision for our collection and exhibition development, our educational and public programs, community engagement, and an inclusive internal environment is pivotal moving forward.
the mysterious, haunted, and deeply spiritual in American culture. In addition, the poignant, beautiful exhibition The Unforeseen Wilderness by Eugene Meatyard of photographs of the Red River Gorge taken in the 1960’s corroborated the importance of environmental protection and stewardship Meatyard together with Wendell Berry advocated for already back then.
We have acquired important works of art by diverse artists from all walks of life that share unique and unparalleled stories of world experiences and perspectives and are currently working on different ideas to bring our collections to you in new and illuminating ways.
Since my arrival we have opened an ambitious, unparalleled exhibition with Supernatural America that investigates
In the past year, the Speed invested in our communities through virtual learning programs and community workshops, hosted virtual artist talks, and presented an ambitious roster of virtual and in person art-house films. In the fall of 2021, we opened a beautiful exhibition by our first Community Connections artist in resident, Shauntrice Martin whose work is informed by the many workshops she hosted for us in the Russell neighborhood. We are committed not only to bringing art and the creative process to all people in our communities but also to support our local artists and creatives.
new colleagues and to learn through and from them about their unique contribution to your museum. We have a deeply committed, passionate, and highly capable staff and it is a pleasure to be working with all of them. We have the great privilege to be overseen by two capable boards, our Board of Trustees and Board of Governors, composed of civic minded, extraordinary individuals from all walks of life who volunteer so much of their resources, knowledge, and expertise to our organization. Without their invaluable contributions we would not be the institution we are. The Speed is a thought leader in so many ways and as a staff and boards we are poised to continue leading the way in the future. It is our role to help shape more inclusive, healthier, and joyous communities by inviting everyone to celebrate art forever. While there is plenty to celebrate, we are still navigating our way through an ever-evolving pandemic that continues to throw new challenges our way. The Omicron variant will certainly continue to complicate our daily lives. At the Speed we remain committed to providing one of the safest and most inspiring museum experiences in the region.
Please visit us often and know, we are here for you!
Gratefully,
It has been a true joy to get to know my
Programming | by Abby Shue, Deputy Director of External Relations and AdvancementLike our entire community and the world, the Speed’s motto for most of 2020 and 2021 was “pivot, pivot, pivot,” especially when it came to our Museum programs. Not only did we navigate changing COVID landscapes, but we welcomed new audiences for the historic Promise, Witness, Remembrance exhibition, many of whom were attending a program at the Speed for the first time. More than ever, we were tasked with living out our mission of inviting everyone to celebrate art forever. Through that responsibility, we learned so much about the capabilities of virtual programming, the immeasurable value of welcoming people back in-person, and the versatility of our local, national, and sometimes even international partners. Thanks to the wonder of video communication and streaming, we were able to offer some of our most beloved programs safely in a virtual format. Through the Global Speed lecture series,
we have traveled the world from Austria to Mexico to Italy and beyond, all without leaving the Museum! This year, we were able to “travel” to Egypt with famed Egyptologist, “Mr. Mummy” himself, Bob Brier, historian, archeologist, and professor Dr. Salima Ikram, and UCLA professor of Egyptian Art and Architecture and resident Hatshepsut expert Dr. Kara Cooney. While we knew how beloved Global Speed is here in Louisville, we underestimated just how many people across the world still have what Brier calls “Egyptomania.” Over 300 people from 19 different countries tuned in live for Global Speed, connecting audiences both at home and abroad with the Speed Art Museum.
We continued to offer After Hours at the Speed virtually, through our social media platforms. Recognizing that part of the fun of After Hours was getting to experience a wide variety of programming, we embraced a “variety show” format, working with partners from Louisville and across the country to tell the stories of our exhibitions.
From a “Queer Eye” tour of Andy Warhol: Revelation with Curator José Diaz and Dr. Jongwoo Kim of Carnegie Mellon University to a performance of selections from the Ballet Russes by Louisville Orchestra Music Director Teddy Abrams in Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper, there was something for everyone to enjoy. And because we were able to record these programs, they now live on our YouTube channel for people to enjoy long after the event has passed!
In the spring of 2021, Promise, Witness, Remembrance set forth a change not only in how we approach exhibition creation and design, but in how we engage community in our programming—from planning to execution. The Speed’s programming group worked closely with Community Engagement Strategist Toya Northington and the Steering Committee (formed in early 2021) as well as exhibition curator Allison Glenn to develop meaningful programs exploring the themes of the exhibition. The end results were programs embracing the national reach of the exhibition, such as
a conversation with the National Panel of artists and activists who advised Allison in her curatorial work, to the hyper-local, with a block-party Community Day bringing in local artists, DJs, food vendors, and more to celebrate what would have been Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday on June 5.
2021 was about pivoting, and while it came with its frustrations and fumbles, the chance to try something in a new way proved to be a gift. This past year, we expanded our reach with programming through the virtual space, making the work we do here accessible to a widerthan-ever audience. We welcomed the Steering Committee into the program planning process, bringing their ideas and connections to the table alongside those from our curators, staff, and Boards of Governors and Trustees for all upcoming exhibitions. The challenges we faced this year brought us closer than ever to our mission: At the Speed, We invite everyone to celebrate art forever.
The past year presented some interesting challenges—and opportunities—for our Education programs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to pivot from engaging and interactive in-person programs to a virtual format that allowed us to share the Speed’s collections and exhibitions with visitors from around the world.
How do you continue to support K-12 teachers and students when they are facing their most difficult year of school? That is the question the Speed’s Education department asked itself at the start of the 2020-2021 school year. We knew from a series of surveys and conversations with teachers that they needed asynchronous, or pre-recorded, content that they could “plug and play” for their students. We expanded on the virtual “Where in the World” tour that was created in April 2020 and created virtual versions of our four remaining school tour topics. We also created prerecorded videos for each of our six Art Detectives crates. Each video features one of our Teaching Artists leading a conversation inspired by the themes and artworks of the Art Detectives crates.
Our virtual tours and Art Detectives
videos were viewed by students and teachers 3,469 times during the 20202021 school year.
Our most ambitious—and engaging— project aimed at K-12 students and teachers was a new video series: I See I Think I Make. Produced by our School Outreach Manager, Amber Thieneman, each episode features Darrick Wood, our Gallery Teaching Manager, leading viewers on an exploration of one big idea. Through a series of fun and engaging art experiences set in the Speed’s galleries, I See I Think I Make teaches students different techniques that they can use when they visit the Museum. During the 2020-2021 school year, our six episodes of I See I Think I Make were viewed 6,780 times.
programs has been overwhelmingly positive. As one teacher shared: “I write the virtual art lessons for my school system and I love being able to drop your videos in every few months so my students can feel a little more normalcy
in their lives by being able to see the Speed from home.” If you haven’t yet experienced our virtual program offerings for yourself, you can find them on our website: speedmuseum.org/learn/virtualprograms/.
Overall, the response to our virtual K-12
During the 2021 fiscal year, Art Sparks remained closed to the public and many of our studio programs were suspended. However, we were still able to provide opportunities for guests of all ages to express their creativity through Facebook Live Artmaking sessions and through the distribution of At Home Art Kits. During Facebook Live Artmaking, a Speed staff member would lead a demonstration of different artistic techniques, providing tips and tricks so viewers at home could follow along. At Home Art Kits were available to Museum guests on weekends, and gave them all of the supplies they would need to
complete a fun and engaging art project at home. In addition to sharing At Home Art Kits with our visitors, we were also able to distribute them to students in JCPS through partnerships with Dare to Care, Global Game Changers, and Change Today, Change Tomorrow. We also hosted a series of adult artmaking workshops via Zoom with topics ranging from watercolor to printmaking, and from glass etching to paper making. Every workshop, Art Kit, and Facebook Live demonstration was inspired by works in the Speed’s collection and our special exhibitions.
Through our Community Outreach work, we continue to partner with social justice and non-profit organizations across Louisville to provide opportunities for collaboration and creativity through our Community Connections program. In early 2021, we were able to resume our artmaking workshops with Play Cousins Collective, a program that were preempted due to the pandemic. The participants in the Play Cousins Collective workshops created wall hangings that reflected their family experiences. Their work was on view at the Speed in an exhibition called Closely Knit, Woven Together, which opened in February 2021. We also resumed our work with students at the W.E.B. DuBois Academy, a partnership that will continue into fiscal year 2022.
One of our most exciting opportunities of 2021 was to launch the Connections Artist-in-Residence program. Toya
Northington, the Speed’s Community Outreach Manager, envisioned the residency in this way: “The Community Connections Residency Program is part of the Speed’s desire to reach out, amplify, and empower the people by collectively creating a platform for artists of all kinds to share their stories and express perspectives on social and personal topics.” Shauntrice Martin, founder of #FeedTheWest and the Black Market KY, was selected as the first Community Connections Artist-inResidence, and will continue in this role through October of 2021. Shauntrice’s residency is focused in the West End, where she led a series of art-making
workshops for children and adults.
Shauntrice also conducted research and shared the rich history of the Russell neighborhood through a series of Friday takeovers on the Speed’s Instagram page. Her experience will culminate in an exhibition at the Speed slated to open in December 2021. You can follow her journey on Instagram @SpeedxWest. Creating opportunities for people to connect with artworks is at the heart of what we do as Museum Educators. During a global pandemic, engaging with artworks and having an outlet for creative expression became more important than ever. I’m proud of what we were able to create during the past year, and we all look forward to safely resuming in-person Education programs in the coming year.
The Speed Cinema partnered with the 2021 Sundance Film Festival to serve as one of nearly 30 satellite screening venues as COVID-19 prevented the festival occurring in-person at Park City.
From January 28 through February 1, the Speed presented 13 world premieres of Sundance films. To ensure maximum social distancing and to accommodate more audience members, the Grand Hall was turned into a screening space with a DCP projection system that would have otherwise been used in Park City in addition to simultaneous screenings in the Speed Cinema. Overall, 494 people attended screenings.
From the 13 films screened, four won major prizes at Sundance. Hive directed by Blerta Basholli won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award: World Cinema Dramatic. Sabaya directed by Hogir Hirori won the Directing Award: World Cinema Documentary. Homeroom directed by Peter Nicks won the Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award.
Jockey directed by Clint Bentley won of the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting: Clifton Collins, Jr.
Speed Cinema also initiated opportunities for discussions of the film. The Speed hosted director Amalia Ulman for the world premiere of her film La Planeta and she conducted her online world premiere Q&A from the Speed. There was a pre-recorded discussion with Jockey director Clint Bentley, lead actor Clifton Collins, Jr, actor Moises
Arias, and producer and Co-screenwriter Greg Kwedar presented at the screening. The Speed collaborated with FilmNorth in Saint Paul, MN to produce the online panel Amplifying the Message: Social Impact Campaigns for Documentary Films moderated by Eugene Hernandez, Deputy Executive Director of Film at Lincoln Center and Director of the New York Film Festival with Dori Begley, Executive Vice-President, Magnolia Pictures; Melinda Arons, Senior VicePresident for Social Impact, Participant Media; and Peter Nicks, director of Homeroom. The Speed also organized the online panel Looking at the Past to

The ambitious program would not have been possible without the support of Sundance Institute with Acura, Sundance TV, Chase Sapphire and Adobe with local support from Rabbit Hole Distillery, Gill & August Holland, Jeff & Susan Calle, and Unbridled Films.

Despite the changes everyone was facing our members continued to support our mission as we reimagined membership and how to engage safely. Members joined us virtually as we explored Egypt, conserved a sarcophagus, and made paper fashion. Due to the support and trust of our members we were able to welcome back After Hours as a safe and socially distanced event. As museums across the country saw a decline
in members our Speed community continued to grow as we welcomed over 450 new households. This fiscal year 58% of our current members renewed their memberships and continued to support our mission. Because of the support of our new and renewing members we were able to invite 61 new Speed for All families to join us in celebrating art. Your continued support of the Speed will allow us to bring bigger exhibitions, fun programming, and more families and school tours. Members are the foundation of any great institution, and we are grateful for you!
