Building Our Collection

Dear Speed Supporters, Museum audiences desire shared experiences, access to knowledge, and exposure to varying perspectives in new and unexpected ways. Stephen Reily’s fresh and innovative vision for a museum at the intersection of these goals offers us opportunities to experience art, have fun, join relevant social discourse, and deliver meaningful educational programs to an ever-broadening audience. In the year ended September 30, 2017 the Speed met these goals in many ways: • Our collector groups gave donors a way to see and support our collection in new ways while also traveling the world together. • Free admission for students and staff from the University of Louisville, KyCAD, Bellarmine, and Manual High School—together with Free Owsley Sundays—brings the world into our galleries. • Speed Cinema presents internationally recognized film programs on a continuous basis and to ever increasing and diverse audiences. We continue to review all operations in the “new” Speed. Strategic guidance from Cultural Strategy Partners and planning support from Humana has focused our work and allowed us to manage and measure its success in new ways. It has been an honor to serve as your Chair with remarkably compassionate, committed and like-minded people. I am confident that the Museum will thrive through these transformative times and that it will be an institutional model within the community and the art world. Sincerely,

Martha Slaughter Chair, Speed Art Museum Board of Trustees 6

A Financial Overview

Dear Friends, When I joined the Speed in April 2017, I joined 125 colleagues ready to help me redefine what a great museum can mean for its city, region, and state. Together we launched a strategic plan with three themes: Invite Everyone, Celebrate Art, and Generate Sustainability. Then we got busy doing all three. Inviting Everyone. In our first full year after reopening, the Speed welcomed over 130,000 guests—a group that was 74% greater than visited the Museum in the year before we closed for renovation. Celebrating Art. Southern Accent was the Speed’s largest and most ambitious exhibition of contemporary art in its 90-year history; its art drew a record-breaking audience hungry for complicated and constructive conversations around race, history, and culture. Generating Sustainability. The Speed is both 90 years old and one year old. We have both a wonderful legacy and the opportunity to build a great new operating model for the future. Your support allowed us to fulfill our mission this year, and in the 90 years ahead. Sincerely,

Stephen Reily Director, Speed Art Museum

MEMBERS MATTER Being a member of the Speed Art Museum is more than a financial contribution, it is strength in numbers. Members are our greatest advocates and most enthusiastic participants. The Speed is an engaging and energized hub of creativity because of your involvement. Your membership contribution makes a big impact. General members of the Speed Art Museum represent our most broad base of support. Our most loyal members, many of whom have been involved for more than thirty years, supported us through the expansion and renovation, from Local Speed to the new Speed Art Museum. That general membership core grew from 553 to over 3,000 households, with more than 1,000 new memberships. This impressive growth provided critical operating support for the Museum that helps fund programs and exhibitions that engage all people.

The Year Ahead The success and vitality of the Speed Art Museum relies on the involvement and commitment of our members. As we grow and continually gauge your values and interests, you will see new incentives to join or renew your membership. From limited parking benefits to free Special Exhibition admission, membership is now more valuable than ever. We welcome your feedback as we work to improve your experience of the Speed. We value your dedication and thank you for supporting art and culture in your community.

A MUSEUM FOR EVERYONE Education programs at the Speed allow guests of all ages to discover the power of art and creativity. From guided tours to workshops and summer camps, the Speed provides something for everyone.

School and Teacher Programs During the 2016-2017 school year, we continued to provide opportunities for K-12 audiences to engage with the Speed—both in school and at the Museum. Art Detectives, our school outreach program, went out to 28 schools across Kentucky and Southern Indiana, providing a hands-on art exploration experience for 6,182 students. We continued to have a strong presence in New Albany Floyd County, but also expanded our reach as far south as Barren County, where we visited eleven classrooms over two days. We also welcomed 7,263 students to the Speed for both Docentguided and self-guided tours of our galleries. Our school tours are designed to help inspire curiosity and build visual literacy skills. On Docent-guided tours, students are invited to look closely, engage in conversations, and explore connections between artworks and the world. Students are also able to participate in a hands-on art-making workshop tied to the theme of their Docent-guided tour.

During the summer of 2017, we also launched our first Summer Teacher Institute—a two-day intensive workshop for teachers focused on the theme of Art + Social Justice. Twenty-five teachers from a variety of backgrounds joined us to explore the Southern Accent exhibition and to think about the ways in which artworks can be used as a force for social commentary and change.

Youth and Family Programs Nurturing creative young minds is one of the most rewarding things we do, and the Speed’s youth and family programs reflect that passion. From camps and teen programs, to our early childhood learning opportunities, we strive to ignite and strengthen the curiosity, imagination, and creativity of our youngest visitors and their families. We continued to offer a series of workshops, tours, and resources targeted specifically to early learners. These programs are designed to spark language development, encourage compassion and empathy, and promote school readiness. We expanded our early childhood outreach program, visiting daycare and early childhood centers to discuss reproductions of artworks from

“ I loved learning about all the different pieces that the different cultures used. I wished that you brought more because I just want to learn more!”

the Speed’s collection. These groups were then invited to the Speed for a participatory tour and exploration of Art Sparks. 14

We were also excited to launch two different programs aimed directly at teens: the Teen Docent program and the Teen Advisory Council. Both groups were made up of high school students from across the city. Teen Docents attended training sessions twice per month, where they learned how to teach with artworks. When their training was completed, they led drop-in tours for family audiences on Sunday afternoons. The Teen Advisory Council also met twice per month to brainstorm, market, and execute a series of programs for their peers to launch during the 2017–2018 school year.

“ This was an amazing experience. I have been taking students on field trips for 31 years, including here in the 90s. This experience surpasses my expectations A+++.”

Art Museum educators with local non-profit organizations in a multi-visit program to create artworks that are then displayed at the Museum. We hosted three exhibitions in 2017, allowing us to bring community voices into our galleries. These exhibitions featured artworks created by participants from Uspiritus, the Shawnee Boys and Girls Club, and University of Louisville College Mentors for Kids.

SPEED CINEMA During its first full year of operating, the Speed Cinema had many success, including selling out 11 screenings of I Am Not Your Negro. This groundbreaking film envisions unfinished Civil Rights manuscript, Remember This House by James Baldwin. I Am Not Your Negro expands on his work, connecting the story to the #BlackLivesMatter movement. These screenings gave the community a new place to discuss some of our hardest topics with community leaders including Dr. Kevin Cosby, Dr. Ricky Jones, Sadiqa Reynolds, Dr. Kaila Story, and Jaison Gardner. Collaborations and post-screening discussions with community leaders will continue to be an important part of the cinema’s programming in the future, making it a place where our community can talk about important issues in the context of film. Harlan Jacobson’s Talk Cinema program gave Speed Cinema a chance to welcome area premieres of many important films including the Academy award-winning Moonlight. Other Talk Cinema screenings included I, Daniel Blake, Land of Mine, Toni Erdmann, and The Commune.

EXHIBITIONS Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art April 30 – October 14, 2017 Southern Accent was the first contemporary art exhibition to question and explore in-depth the complex and contested space of the American South. The exhibition encompasses a broad spectrum of media and approaches, demonstrating that “Southern-ness” is more of a shared sensibility than any one definable culture or style. This exhibition featured the work of sixty artists, focusing primarily on the last thirty-five years. Southern Accent was co-organized by Miranda Lash, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Speed Art Museum, and Trevor Schoonmaker, Chief Curator and Patsy R. and Raymond D. Nasher Curator of Contemporary Art at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue published by Duke University Press with numerous contributions by artists, scholars, musicians, and poets, a music-listening library, and a timeline of scholarship on southern art. The exhibition was supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust, A. Cary Brown and Steven E. Epstein, Paul and Deborah Chellgren, and Colin and Woo Speed McNaughton 27

Total Liabilities and Net Assets

The condensed statement of financial position and statement of activities reflect information taken from the Museum’s financial statements audited by Mountjoy Chilton Medley. Total Assets listed do not include the value of the Museum’s Collection. Physical plant and security includes depreciation of $3,053,916. Thanks to our founder, Hattie Bishop Speed, and to past generations of donors, who generously remembered the Speed through bequests, we are fortunate to have unrestricted net assets at least five times our annual budget. These funds continue to be invested as an endowment to support future operations and unexpected program needs.
