Building Our Collection

Dear Speed supporters, In the fiscal year that ended September 30, 2018 the Speed Art Museum celebrated its 91st anniversary, and we made an important transition from celebrating our beautiful new building to celebrating the importance of art with a recordbreaking number of visitors, and building an operating model that will keep us healthy for (at least) another 91 years.

Inviting Everyone Our singular success of this year was the introduction of “After Hours,” a celebration of art, accompanied by music, lectures, gallery tours, film, food, and drinks, that happens on the third Friday of every month from 5–10 pm. While a monthly evening event is not a new idea among museums, we have used After Hours to strengthen our community partnerships, connect our exhibitions and permanent collection to music, and draw record-breaking crowds (and sponsorships). People are hungry for unique experiences and for connections with others, and After Hours delivers both; it makes us happy to see Louisvillians of all ages, neighborhoods, faiths and colors coming together to find common ground in art.

Celebrating Art This year also saw our first breakout exhibition successes at the “new” Speed. Our Chief Curator, Erika Holmquist-Wall organized our version of a traveling exhibition that we titled Women Artists in the Age of Impressionism, and Erika did something beautiful with this exhibit, giving visitors a way to enjoy spectacular paintings by 37 women artists from the 19th Century while also connecting their stories to the professional and personal obstacles faced by women of all centuries, including our own. The Speed Cinema also saw its first blockbusters. Dean Otto brought Loving Vincent (the first entirely hand-painted animated film) and RBG (a documentary about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg) to record-breaking exclusive runs at the Speed; nearly 25,000 people, many of them newcomers to the Speed, saw these two films, and later came back for more.

Forever This was the year in which we replaced the word “sustainability” with the word “forever,” and found new ways to engage supporters who are keeping this operation alive. We built a new model for the Speed Ball that was equally focused on the past (a seated dinner in our galleries) and the future (with a new generation of supporters). “The Art of Bourbon” was inaugurated, which is already on track to become the nation’s premier nonprofit bourbon auction and an important fundraiser for our exhibits. As a museum founded by a woman, we also spent the year celebrating women—and gathering generous support from many of you who wanted to honor and celebrate women in your own lives. Raising money is one thing; we are working hard to raise money in ways we can repeat, and as the year closed out we invested in doubling the size of our Development Department to support our goal of increasing contributed revenue by over $1 million over the next three years.

This was also the year in which my title changed from “Interim Director” to “Director,” and I am particularly grateful to the nearly 125 colleagues who made this a job I wanted to keep; to the Board of Trustees and Board of Governors who support us; and especially to Board of Trustees Chair Martha Winans Slaughter, who advised me wisely and supported me enthusiastically as I learned and worked with all of you to bring this beautiful new building to life. We are particularly grateful to the 125 dedicated staff members, who bring the Speed to life on a daily basis, to the Board of Trustees and Board of Governors and our donors, who guide and support the important work of celebrating art in everyday lives as we learn and work together to bring this beautiful new building to fruition. Sincerely,

Stephen Reily Director, Speed Art Museum

CELEBRATING WOMEN Founded by a woman and endowed by a woman, the Speed Art Museum has a long history of supporting women in the roles they play in and out of the art world. The 2018 exhibition season was no different and featured two major exhibitions by women artists the first being, Women Artist in the Age of Impressionism followed by Thoroughly Modern: Women Artists in 20th Century Art and Design. The Speed hosted and celebrated First Women throughout the Commonwealth during the 2nd Annual International Women’s Day luncheon where the Speed honored 12 women who were first to break ground in their fields. The Speed also shared in the success of featuring women in film with sold out screenings of RBG (a documentary of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg) and Love, Gilda the story of Gilda Radner, a comedian whose cancer journey inspired the organization Gilda’s Club.

School and Teacher Programs

23

2018 Year In Review

During the 2017– 2018 school year, we continued to provide opportunities for K–12 audiences to engage with the Speed—both in school and at the Museum. We were pleased to introduce the Speed Family Pass this year. Every student participating in one of our K–12 programs received one of these passes, which provides free admission and access to the Museum for their entire family. Students are then able to play the role of Docent, sharing some of their favorite artworks and Museum memories with their families. We continued to provide opportunities for teachers to bring the Speed into their classrooms through Art Detectives. Our school outreach program went out to 43 schools across Kentucky and Southern Indiana, providing a hands-on art exploration experience for 8,159 students. We continued to have a strong presence in Jefferson County, as well as in New Albany-Floyd County in southern Indiana. But we visited students in Barren, Boyle, Bullitt, Hardin, Henry, and Mercer counties through the newly launched Commonwealth Initiative, designed to bring Art Detectives to school districts across the state.

Docent-guided tours at the Speed invite students to look closely, engage in conversations, and explore connections between artworks and the world. We welcomed 8,956 students to the Speed for both Docent-guided and self-guided tours of our galleries. We also introduced a new thematic tour in January 2018: Full STEAM Ahead. During this tour, students participate in interactive gallery experiences that connect the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math to artworks from the Speed’s collection. This tour is an extension of a STEAMfocused Art Detectives crate that launched in 2017, and members of our Education staff were invited to speak about these STEAM initiatives at the 2018 National Art Education Association conference.

Youth and Family Programs Family programs at the Speed provide opportunities for families to connect with each other, and with our collection, through workshops, tours, camps, and more. We strive to ignite and strengthen the curiosity, imagination, and creativity of our youngest visitors and their families. This year, we introduced two new resources that families can use to help them explore the Museum: a Family Guide booklet, which includes clues for looking and conversation, and Family Bags, which provide thematic books, activities, and games for families to play in the galleries. We continued to offer a series of workshops, tours, and resources targeted specifically to early learners (ages 2– 5). These programs are designed to spark language development, encourage compassion and empathy, and promote school readiness. We were also excited to re-introduce youth side-by-side workshops, which provide an opportunity for children ages 6 –12 to create artworks together with their parent or guardian. We began offering a series of printmaking workshops in June 2018, which combined a tour of Picasso to Pollock: Modern Masterworks from the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University with a printmaking demo. Participants were then able to create their own monotype prints using our printing press, allowing them to leave the Museum with their own original artworks.

Community Outreach This year, the Wall Together program was rebranded as Community Connections. Through Community Connections, the Speed partners with local non-profit organizations in a multi-visit program to create artworks that are then displayed at the Museum. We hosted three exhibitions in 2018, allowing us to bring community voices into our galleries. These exhibitions featured artworks created by participants from University of Louisville College Mentors for Kids, Backside Learning Center, and Family Scholar House. Participants from Backside Learning Center and Family Scholar House were also enrolled into the Speed for All Member program. This is a new membership level that is launching with our community partners, and will be introduced more broadly in 2019.

SPEED CINEMA This year saw a significant increase in attendance at the Speed Cinema due to a series of successful runs. Overall, 37,113 people bought tickets for screenings and 2,221 people attended Owsley Free Sunday screenings throughout the year. The first breakout hit, Loving Vincent, started with a booking of five screenings in late October, all of which sold out in advance. By February, 11,925 had attended 90 screenings making the Speed screenings the third highest grossing venue for the film in the U.S. The director, Dorota Kobiela, and producer, Hugh Welchman, were Image from American Animals

so impressed, that they made a special stop to Louisville on their way from Poland to the Oscars in Los Angeles in order to discuss the making of the animated film and to sign copies of the video with local fans. Later successes involved collaborations with community partners. RBG, a compelling documentary on the Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, attracted 9,540 people over its run of 79 screenings from June through late August. The ACLU-KY and the Political Science Department at the University of Louisville each organized post-screening panels and the students at the Brandeis School of Law at UofL introduced the first 20 screenings to discuss RBG’s effect on their studies.

EXHIBITIONS Women Artists in the Age of Impressionism February 17 – May 13, 2018 The exhibition Women Artists in the Age of Impressionism expanded our understanding of this rich art historical period and demonstrated the formative role women artists played in the major currents of European modernism, including Realism, Impressionism, and Symbolism. The forward-thinking women represented in the exhibition not only created powerful paintings but also generated a momentum that has led toward a more egalitarian art world. Women Artists in the Age of Impressionism is organized by the American Federation of Arts. Guest curator Laurence Madeline, Chief Curator for French National Heritage, was aided by Suzanne Ramljak, AFA Curator, and Jeremiah William McCarthy, AFA Associate Curator. Presentation of the exhibition at the Speed Art Museum is coordinated by Erika HolmquistWall, Chief Curator at the Speed Art Museum.

EXHIBITIONS Thoroughly Modern: Women in 20th Century Art & Design December 16, 2017 – July 1, 2018 Thoroughly Modern was developed to begin where the chronology of Women Artists in the Age of Impressionism ends. The exhibition presented the work of several women artists and designers active in the early and mid-twentieth century (1900 – 60). These women were committed to promoting the tenets of Modernism in their work, both in Europe and America. This exhibition retold the stories of these design pioneers and groundbreaking artists.

EXHIBITIONS BRUCE CONNER: FOREVER AND EVER November 11, 2017 – March 4, 2018 BRUCE CONNER: FOREVER AND EVER, was an exhibition of films and prints by Bruce Conner (1933–2008), an artist known for his innovations in film, assemblage, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and collage. This exhibition was organized to celebrate a recent gift from the Conner Family Trust of twenty-one lithographs to the Speed Art Museum. These prints reveal an intricate and obsessive practice that crossed over into Conner’s drawings and films from the same period.

EXHIBITIONS Breaking the Mold: Investigating Gender at the Speed Art Museum April 7 – September 9, 2018 Breaking the Mold explored depictions of gender identity through the body, dress, objects, and history. Acknowledging that all humans contend with the issues of gender and sexuality, this exhibition includes a variety of perspectives and a spectrum of gender expressions. Through self-portraits, portraits of their sitters, and images appropriated from popular culture, these artists address the themes of desire, attraction, pride, discomfort, and discrimination.

EXHIBITIONS Norman Rockwell: Process to the Post August 8 – November 11, 2018 This installation highlights Norman Rockwell’s Study for Breaking Home Ties, a charcoal drawing that served as a preparatory study for the cover of the September 25, 1954, issue of the Saturday Evening Post. The drawing depicts a weathered rancher and his son sitting on the running board of an old pickup truck, waiting for a train that will carry the son off to college. As a father who struggled with “an empty feeling” when his own sons left home, Rockwell considered Breaking Home Ties autobiographical. The drawing and the related Post cover are an exploration of the underlying emotional tensions between father, son, and family dog, as they come to terms with the boy’s imminent departure. During his prolific career, Rockwell created over 800 cover designs for magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Boys’ Life, and Look, as well as scores of illustrations for advertisements, calendars, and popular novels. Rockwell strove to create illustrations that grabbed the reader’s attention, told stories in an easy-to-understand manner, and offered an idealized view of what he (and his publishers) considered the quintessential American life. His commitment to accuracy in his paintings and illustrations led him to adopt a painstaking process for developing his cover illustrations for the Post.

EXHIBITIONS American Storybook: The Imaginary Travelougue of Thomas Chambers July 21, 2018 – January 6, 2019 This exhibition features twenty-two of the singularly idiosyncratic landscapes produced by Thomas Chambers, one of the earliest American artists to specialize in the genre of landscape painting for commercial production. As the first artist working in America to make landscape painting accessible to a wider audience and broader socioeconomic class, Chambers tapped into the fascination and interest in travel and exploration. American Storybook explores various themes and ideas surrounding the American landscape, such as rural and urban development, exploration of the frontier and its surrounding waterways, the desire and/or need to document topography and geography, and the economics and demand for such pictures. The exhibition is the second in a series of collaborations and collection exchanges between the Speed Art Museum and the Eskenazi Museum at IU. These collaborative exchanges also serve to further each museum’s reach in the Kentuckiana region, and expand our audiences in each other’s backyards.

EXHIBITIONS Picasso to Pollock: Modern Masterworks from the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University June 16, 2018 – January 20, 2019 Picasso to Pollock: Modern Masterworks from the Eskenazi Museum of Art showcases the impressive early 20th-century art collection owned by the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University. It covers the breadth of nearly every major artistic movement that occurred between the years 1900 and 1950 in Europe and America. Boundaries were pushed via revolutionary new ways of thinking, expressed through such movements as Fauvism, Cubism, German Expressionism, Dada, and Surrealism. The exhibition serves as a basic primer in early 20th century modern Western art. Gallery themes include Wars and Revolution, Abstraction, Cubism, Dada and Surrealism, Expressionism, and Urban Life, with emphasis on the creative process and artistic experimentation, especially as the century progressed. Featured artists include Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Gabriele Münter, Egon Schiele, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, Kay Sage, Paul Klee, Diego Rivera, and Jackson Pollock.

The condensed statement of financial position and statement of activities reflect information taken from the Museum’s financial statements audited by MCM. Total Assets listed do not include the value of the Museum’s Collection. Physical plant and security includes depreciation of $3,052,274. Thanks to our founder, Hattie Bishop Speed, and to past generations of donors, who generously remembered the Speed through bequests, we are fortunate to have unrestricted net assets at least five times our annual budget. These funds continue to be invested as an endowment to support future operations and unexpected program needs.
