hile today’s #1 place to meet your spouse is online, you might say our way of meeting was a bit more unconventional. I met the future love of my life after being stuck inside a garbage can. Yes, that’s right, a garbage can. Over 30 years ago, while attending Foothill High School in Pleasanton, I had a major crush on a fellow classmate, Rick Chimenti. I was fairly certain the attraction was mutual, but to my disappointment, he would not approach me. Everything changed the day a friend of mine, being comical, picked me up and put me into an oversized trash can in the school hallway. It was meant all in good fun, but because the can was almost as tall as I was and was on wheels, I could not get out. Much to my embarrassment, it turned out that Rick had seen the whole thing from his classroom down the hall. After wishing he would speak to me for months, KLV Ă€ UVW ZRUGV HYHU WR PH ZHUH ´/RRNV OLNH \RX KDG a hard time getting out of the garbage can! Can I buy you a cafeteria lunch?â€? )URP WKDW Ă€ UVW DZNZDUG PHHWLQJ LQ 5LFN DQG I have been inseparable. I knew I had landed a good FDWFK IRU OLIH ZKHQ ZH ZHQW WURXW Ă€ VKLQJ DW 6KDGRZ Cliffs, still as teens. After what I thought was a great FDVW , VHDUFKHG WKH ZDWHU IRU P\ Ă€ VKLQJ OLQH %DIĂ HG I did not see it hit the water. Rick tapped me on the shoulder and pointed to KLV FKLQ ´,W¡V ULJKW KHUH Âľ 7KHUH ZDV VWLOO D ZLJJOLQJ ZRUP RQ WKH KRRN WKDW ZDV QRZ Ă€ UPO\ HPEHGGHG LQ his chin. Rick was a great sport about it, even as I

alternated from crying to laughing over the next 15 minutes. After lunch at Dandy Dog’s (with the hook still in his chin), we headed off to the emergency room. Rick’s mom saved the hook in an envelope labeled, ´7KH 'D\ 'LDQD +RRNHG 5LFN Âľ , VWLOO have it to this day. Flash forward 25 years later to a Foothill High School class reunion, where Rick and I had just received an award for longest married classmates. We bumped into my friend who had put me into that fateful garbage can. We laughed about the story and KH DSRORJL]HG ´$UH \RX NLGGLQJ"Âľ , WROG KLP ´<RX did me the biggest favor of my life,â€? and I meant it. A funny irony to our love story is that for over 31 years, Rick has worked at a garbage company in San Francisco, where his father and grandfather had once been shareholders. With a smile, I always say the moral to our love story is that.. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Maybe it’s because I was a kid in the ‘70s, when it was all the rage at dinner parties, but fondue is still one of my all time favorite foods and no one does it better around here than Livermore’s Simply Fondue. DAYCATION Marin Headlands

Warm temperatures combined with an unrelenting high pressure system made for a stunning early January trip to the Marin Headlands. While much of the country was trapped inside by the polar vortex, I left the house in short sleeves and a sweatshirt (just in case) with the GPS set to points north, determined to take advantage of our unusually mild winter weather while it lasted. I started the afternoon at Vista Point—and the most spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge—before heading over to the Marin Headlands Visitor Center. It’s also a great place to park if you plan on biking along the coastal road. If you’ve never been to the Visitor Center, it’s worth a stop to learn about the history of the Headlands. Before early European settlers arrived, Miwok Indians made their home in the Headlands during Spring and Fall. In the early 1800s, the area was cattle grazing ground with Spanish Vaqueros tending herds. Fast forward a hundred years or so, and the Headlands becomes home to generations of soldiers. The forts, bunkers, barracks, batteries and missile site remain as part of the history of the park. The trail to Point Bonita Light House Hikers can pick up a trail map at the visitor center. The Coastal and Miwok Trails in part form a moderate loop a little more than 7 miles that showcases the beauty of the region. Or, head down to Rodeo Beach for a picnic, explore the lagoon or hike to Vista Point for spectacular views of San Francisco. If you prefer shorter distances, the trail down to Point Bonita Light House is about half a mile long and features a tunnel and short

suspension bridge (don’t look down) to the still active lighthouse that sends out a sound blast every 30 seconds. In this case, what goes down, must come back up. Be prepared for a steep climb back to the road. If level ground is more your speed, the Headlands is home to one of 300 Nike missile firing batteries in the United States that were built to defend against Soviet bombers during the Cold War. The Headlands site SF-88 is the only restored Nike missile site in the country. Guided walks begin from the Testing and Assembly Building during which guests get an up close look at this tense era in American history. Camping sites and a hostel are available for overnight stays. The Headlands is also home to the Marine Mammal Center, which is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Things to know: Parking and admission are free. The Visitor Center is located in the Fort Barry Chapel. It’s open year-round from 9:30am to 4:30pm. The SF-88 Nike Missile Site is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12:30 to 3:30pm. Point Bonita Lighthouse is open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 12:30 to 3:30pm. If you head to one of the area beaches, please stay out of the water. In addition to being cold, there are dangerous riptides. Dogs are allowed on most trails. Bring your own water and snacks. There are no food vendors inside the park.
