The James Beard Celebrity Chef Tour in Danville

F

oodies from around the Bay Area gathered at Bridges Restaurant in March when it joined the ranks of some of America’s finest establishments selected to host the James Beard Foundation’s Celebrity Chef Tour. Other stops on the 2014 tour include Balena in Chicago, Kapnos in Washington DC, Gloria Ferrer Winery in Sonoma and RN74 in Seattle, among others. Each tour stop brings together a group of highly rated chefs to create a multi-course dinner that the Foundation describes as “a work of artistry and craftsmanship.” Each course is paired with a premium wine or in some cases, beer. In keeping with the Beard House tradition, dinner guests have the opportunity to meet participating chefs. Guests at Bridges were treated to pairings

created by Ari Taymor (Alma, Los Angeles), David Varley (Mina Corporate Executive Chef), Sophie Uong (Pican, Oakland), Duskie Estes (Zazu Restaurant & Farm, Sebastopol) as well as Bridges’ own Kevin Gin and Rose Nape. The evening featured amazing culinary creations, but above all showcased the fine details that Bridges attends to so effortlessly, making the restaurant an obvious choice to include along the 2014 tour. From first to last impressions, the evening was flawless. The valet guys have to get an honorable mention for being welcoming and getting people out of their cars and into the restaurant quickly. The event started with an elegant reception p on the patio to warm guests up for the main m event. Chef Gin’s crispy rabbit spring rolls rol were just one of the highlights of the rec reception that included melon fizzes created by award-winning mixologist, Manny Hinojosa, who rocked it in the cocktail department all night long. Kevin Gin started off the dinner with wagyu sashimi with ankimo and Rose Nape put the finishing touch on the evening with her chocolate olive oil mousse cake. Chef Estes’s duck noodle soup and

Chef Varley’s prime rib eye were among my favorites. Bridges’ service was just as memorable as the food. Even on a busy night, the kitchen and wait staff isn’t pushed nearly as far as it was on this occasion, when 100 plus people were served each course at the same time. Glasses were filled, questions were answered and senior staff members came around frequently to visit with guests.

T

his month we got in the car and headed west—just about as far west as possible—to the northwestern corner of San Francisco, home of Land’s End. We started our adventure at the Land’s End Lookout, a visitor center with all sorts of information about the history of the area. The Sutro Historic District was developed by German-born inventor, entrepreneur and real estate developer, Adolph Sutro, who helped shape the landscape of late 19th century San Francisco. Just outside the visitor center is the Coastal Trail, an accessible paved path that showcases stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the edge of our continent. If you have guests in town or haven’t walked it yourself, put it on your list of places to go. If you head north on your walk, you can check out the memorial to the USS San Francisco, which is constructed from the bridge wings of the WWII cruiser. On your way back, pick up the path that leads to the ruins of the Sutro Baths. You’ll have to use your imagination to picture this massive facility that once accommodated 10,000 people. Built in a classic Greek style, the Baths featured seven swimming pools (six fresh water and one salt water) with slides, trapezes, springboards and a high dive. The Baths included a museum, a laundry that washed 20,000 swim suits and 40,000 towels daily, vending machines, a shooting gallery and more. Continue south on Point Lobos Avenue to the secret part of Ocean Beach which is hidden behind beautiful uninterrupted sand dunes between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard where you can enjoy a quiet walk along the beach. If you’ve worked up an appetite, head back to enjoy a meal at

the Bistro, the casual of the two restaurants at the Cliff House. The Bistro serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with seating available on a walk-in basis. Entrées range from $12 to $28. A historic landmark, the Camera Obscura is adjacent to the Cliff House. Built by Floyd Jennings in 1946, the Camera Obscura employs technology created by Leonardo da Vinci in the late 1500s. It produces 360 degree live images of the Seal Rock area using a series of mirrors and sunlight that reflect on a concave disk ($3 cash). Finally, if time permits, visit the windmills at the West end of Golden Gate Park. At 95 feet tall, Murphy Windmill was the worlds largest windmill when it was built in 1905. Things to know: Land’s End Lookout is located at 680 Point Lobos Avenue in San Francisco. It’s open daily from 9am to 5pm. Parking is available. This classic loop course provides views in all directions as you circle the park’s dominant peak via Deer Flat, Prospector’s Gap and Oak Knoll. Parts of this hike will pass through burn areas of last September’s Morgan Fire where wildflowers should be abundant. Allow six and a half hours for this eight mile hike with a total elevation gain of 2000 feet. Hikers will hike at a steady, relaxed pace and a lunch break will be included. Meet with your hike leader, Jake Van Akkeren at 10am at Juniper Camp Trailhead (take either North or South Gate Roads to their junction and continue up until the large parking lot on the left). My friend raved about her shrimp and grits, prepared with sauteed kale and chimichurri sauce. At $4 a cup, we thought the coffee was a bit pricey, so we opted for $5 Bloody Marys instead. At first glance, the decor seems a bit dark for a breakfast spot, but now that Pleasanton’s Farmhouse Eatery is also open for dinner, it makes sense. The breakfast menu features a good mix of sweet and savory options. I opted to build my own omelette with mushrooms, bacon and cheese. Their omelettes are huge and come with a heaping side of potatoes. The breakfast burrito is big enough for two (a friend and I both took home leftovers) and also comes with potatoes. Like the omelette, you can choose your filling. Go early to try their special mushroom polenta. It tends to sell out quickly. It’s no doubt that by now you’ve probably heard of Denica’s Real Food Kitchen, famous for their oversized cinnamon rolls. If you haven’t been, it’s worth a trip. And with locations in Livermore, Dublin and Walnut Creek, you don’t have to venture too far. The cornmeal pancakes have just the right amount of crispy crust. The nirvana crepes filled with strawberries and whipped cream are topped with boysenberry syrup and almonds. They could double as dessert. The burrito with scrambled eggs, potatoes, cheddar and ham was a bit boring, but the chorizo and scrambled eggs with potatoes, black beans and tortillas was a home run. Prices range from $6 to $13.
