L

ake Berryessa at 26 miles long and 3 miles wide, is one of the largest man-made lakes in California. It was created in 1957 when the small town of Monticello was flooded by the creation of the Monticello Dam on Putah Creek near the town of Winters. I hear stories of how my parents used to drive to Lake Berryessa as it was being filled and could literally back down an old road to launch their boat for free. I am a second generation Lake Berryessa vistor and I don’t remember those days, but I’ve spent many days floating on my air mattress in the lake, boating, water skiing, jet skiing, camping and going up for simple day trips. It seems no matter where I have moved in the bay area, Lake Berryessa has always been a relatively short drive away. With water temps in the mid-70s during the summer, and so many activities, it’s easy to see why this lake is a favorite of locals. We recently visited Lake Berryessa via Winters. This sleepy little town located just off of I-505 is great place to stop for a bite to eat and some wine tasting. While there are many outstanding food choices, we opted for the Putah Creek Cafe. Featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives� hosted by Guy Fieri, the food here did not disappoint. Stop in the Winters Visitor Center on Main Street, where you can find a map of places to go wine tasting in town. As we continued up the beautifully winding highway 128 toward the lake, we passed through orchards and traveled along side Putah Creek, which offers fishing, barbequing and picnicking. To add to the nostalgia, it’s worth noting that Putah Creek is the “Green River� John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival sang about in the late 1960’s. A left turn off 128 onto Pleasants Valley

Road will take you to Lake Solano, a relaxing destination of its own with scenic paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking and more. Peacocks roam the grounds to the delight of children. Parking is $5. Don’t forget mosquito repellent if it’s early evening. For camping reservations, visit ParkReservations.SolanoCounty.com. Continuing up 128, you’ll eventually reach the top of the Monticello Dam, where there is room to pull off the highway and take in the view of the lake, the dam and the glory hole. Despite the drought, the lake didn’t look as low as expected, and there is still plenty of water at Lake Berryessa to enjoy summer water activities. We drove around to three different lake resort locations on Berryessa’s south shore. Markley Cove is for boaters and jet skiing only. Further down you will find Pleasure Cove, which I’m sure is great when the lake is higher but not quite to my liking under current conditions. House boats are available at this location. My favorite spot on this trip was the Steele Canyon Campground. There are several pull out locations along Highway 128 where you can park for free and take an easy (or difficult) walk down to the lake shores, but beware; these are clearly marked as high theft areas. One final tip is the micro brewery, Berryessa Brewing Company, located along highway 128 just outside Winters. They offer barbeque and live music on the weekends and a six-beer tasting flight for $10. For more information on Lake Berryessa recreation, visit GoBerryessa. com. Start and finish this scenic cycling tour at the historic Yountville Veteran’s Home, just off Highway 29. Enjoy the beautiful grounds after your ride with a dip in the pool, a hot shower, and a BBQ lunch served between 11:30am and 4pm. This is a ride (not a race!) hosted by the Eagle Cycling Club. Choose between a 35,40,65 or 100 mile ride. The Club is famous for providing home baked cookies at rest stops which are provided every 20 miles. Please carry a water bottle into the rest stops for refreshments, there will be no disposable cups. Starting windows: 100 mile ride starts 6-8am, 65 mile ride starts 7-9am and both 40 and 30 mile rides start 8:30-10am, Preresgister at EagleCyclingClub. org ($35-85).

The Walnut Run for Education is a proud tradition of Walnut Creek, originally started in the early 1950s. In 2010 it was reestablished to raise money for local schools. Since then, they’ve raised over $28,000. The money raised each year is handed to each school who has participants involved in the race. The more runners from a designated school will generate a larger percent of how much money will be handed to them in the end. The start line is located at 1201 Main Street, Walnut Creek. Start with Diablo prawns, which are perfect for sharing. Shallots, garlic, olive oil and chilies bring out the flavor of the prawns without being too spicy. Sticking with the prawns, Ferrari’s capellini with prawns, tomato, garlic, olive oil and white wine is one of the lighter entrÊe choices. Or for something more filling, pair a salad with a flatbread pizza for a complete meal. The San Ramon, with caramelized onions, roasted pear, mozzarella and gorgonzola is a great choice.
