JUNGLE YOGURT/ CUBA CAFÉ
LA COCINA MEXICAN RESTAURANT
Jungle Yogurt offers a variety of frozen yogurt flavors and sorbet along with numerous tempting toppings and sauces. They feature a flavor of the week and every Sunday they switch out three flavors for new ones. They’ve now expanded their menu to include a selection of breakfast and lunch items (served from 7am until 2pm). Enjoy both American and specialty Cuban dishes such as Ropa Vieja Omelette (filled with robust Cuban stew), Ham Croquettes, French Toast, Cuban Sandwich (slow-roasted pork, ham, Swiss, pickles and mustard sauce on homemade Cuban bread with black beans or fries) plus coffee and house-made pastries. Open daily from 7am-9pm, they’re located at 126 S. Orchard Avenue in Vacaville (next to Food Fair). Call (707) 474-5061 or visit www.jungleyogurt.com.
My first experience at the family-owned La Cocina Mexican Restaurant was a delight. The service is attentive and friendly and the food was amazing! Everything is fresh and cooked to order. Starting with the chips and tasty house salsa, you’ll realize you’re in for a memorable meal. I highly recommend the Carne Asada and Fajita Quesadilla (flour tortilla stuffed with grilled bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and cheese with choice of chicken, steak or shrimp). Both come with rice and beans, (or grilled vegetables) and guacamole fresco, pico de gallo and sour cream. Along with a large beer selection, they offer a variety of specialty Margaritas. They’re open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and located at 105 Dorset Drive in Dixon off I-80 (near Wal-Mart). Call (707) 693-1102.

Q’S HALAL CHICKEN Father and son partners, Chef Sam and Q, opened their first restaurant in downtown Alameda serving delicious Afghan and Mediterranean dishes. Now at their newest location in Fairfield, you’ll enjoy tasty comfort food prepared from old country recipes with a modern fuse. Their menu includes a variety of appetizers, salads, burgers, wraps, main entrées, sides and desserts. For newcomers, I would recommend a sample platter with their Combo Kabob (chicken breast, lamb gyro, basmati rice, salad, naan and yogurt-chutney sauce) with a side of falafels. To top off your meal, enjoy a slice of baklava for dessert. Located at 3344 N. Texas St. in Fairfield, they’re open 11am8:30pm Mon-Sat and 11am-7pm Sun, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Catering is also available. Call (707) 419-5571 or visit their website at www.qhalal.com.
LIME LEAF THAI/ LAO KITCHEN This unassuming little place is tucked away in the Marina Center off Highway 12 in Suisun City, yet offers some of the best Thai and Laotian dishes around. Inside you’ll find an informal setting that allows for a relaxed dining experience with reasonable prices, making it an affordable night out. The menu selection is varied and features appetizers, soups, salads, entrées, and desserts. Among my favorites are the Lime Chicken (lightly breaded and fried, it includes vegetables with creamy sweet dipping sauce), BBQ Beef Short Ribs and, of course, Sticky Rice with Mango for dessert. If you’ve never tasted Thai Iced Tea, give it a try. It’s unique, sweet and addictive! Open daily from 11am-8pm (9pm Thurs-Sat), they’re located at 307 Marina Center in Suisun City. Call (707) 429-1969.

t may be common knowledge that the USS Hornet was involved in World War II, but did you know that in addition to seeing her share of combat, she also played an important role in space exploration? The USS Hornet CV-12 is an Essex class aircraft carrier in the United States Navy, constructed in August 1942. She was originally commissioned as the Kearsarge, but was renamed in honor of the USS Hornet CV-8, a carrier that was sunk in battle in October 1942. The Hornet was commissioned in November 1943 and joined the U.S. forces in the Pacific War after three months of training. In addition to playing a major role in the Pacific theater of World War II, she also transported troops back to the U.S. at the end of the war. After serving in the Vietnam War, she was utilized by the Apollo program, recovering astronauts as they returned from the Moon. After finally being decommissioned in 1970, the Hornet was designated as both a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark. In 1998 she was opened to the public as the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda. You can tour the USS Hornet and learn about her storied history from knowledgeable docents, many of whom served aboard her during missions ranging from Korea, Vietnam, and recovery of the Apollo capsules. A variety of guided tours are available, including Group Tours, History
Mystery Tours, Morning Flashlight Tours and History Mystery Overnight tours, as well as self-guided tours to allow you to explore and learn about this fascinating ship. If you have the opportunity, I recommend the overnight tour. You have the chance to eat and sleep in the same quarters and mess as sailors who crewed the ship. You will experience the three-tiered bunks, just over 5 feet 10 inches in length, surrounded by your fellow crew members. Could the USS Hornet really be haunted? Traverse the decks in small groups while investigating the most wellknown paranormal hot-spots. During the mystery tour, you will learn the history of the Hornet while investigating the ship with one of the experienced crew members in the dead of night. Your behind-the-scenes tour includes areas aboard the ship that have not yet been opened to the public, virtually untouched since the ship’s decommissioning over forty years ago, as well as other eerie spaces that have been reported to host unseen visitors. If you go: Find the USS Hornet Air, Sea and Space Museum at 707 West Hornet Ave., Pier 3 in Alameda. Open daily, 10am–5pm. No entrance after 4pm. Admission is $10-20. Children 6 and under are free. Free parking is available across the street. Due to the nature of the Hornet’s steep stairwells and narrow passageways, wheelchair and stroller accessibility is extremely limited. The Flight Simulator operates on a regular basis three times a day (except Tuesdays): 11:00am–11:30am, 1:00pm–1:30pm, and 3:00pm–3:30pm. The cost is $6 per person for the 5-minute ride. A concession stand is open on weekends. On weekdays, the Museum is visited by a food truck. For more information, visit USS-Hornet.org or call 510.521.8448. SUNDAY, AUGUST 7th
BENICIA STATE RECREATION AREA
This is one of the first kids-only triathlons to take place in California. It’s for children ages 3 to 15 and offers a supportive, non-competitive atmosphere. Children will get exercise, a huge confidence boost, a chance to try something new, and walk away with a medal, which will give them a huge sense of accomplishment. Children just need to be able to swim, ride a bike and run. The focus of this event is finishing, not how fast and in what order. Every child will be treated like a winner! The Kids Triathlon is held at Arroyo Park, 2000 Shasta Drive in Davis. For more information go to www.changeofpace.com.
Located two miles west of downtown Benicia, the area includes 447 acres of land with 2½ miles of paths set aside for cyclists, runners, walkers, equestrians and roller skaters. Trails roll through the marshy, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait. Picnicking, bird watching and fishing are also attractions. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. To get more information, please visit parks.ca.gov.

Summer’s arrival has brought some scorching days along with it. If you’re feeling the heat, imagine what it must be like for your dog. As temperatures continue to climb, we have some tips to ensure your pets stay safe.
Cars & Dogs You would think it goes without saying, but please, please leave your dog at home during the summer. On a 75-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can climb to well over 100º quickly. Even with the windows down, a dog can overheat. Certain breeds, such as pugs, pekingese and Boston terriers are more susceptible to heat stroke. If you see a dog sitting in a hot, parked car, call your local police non-emergency number. They will send a unit to investigate the dog’s welfare. Exercise If the asphalt is too hot for your bare feet, then it’s too hot for your dog. Walk your dog early in the morning or in the evening after the sun has gone down. Bring water and a portable bowl with you and always watch for excessive panting. If your dog shows signs of overheating, find a shady spot to lay down and rest. Leave Fido at Home We think of our pets as family members and want them with us as much as possible, but summer festivals are no place for dogs. Besides the crowds, sudden movements and loud noises can spook a dog, plus there are often few convenient spots to potty, and again, temperatures will probably be too hot. Outside If your dog spends prolonged periods outside, make sure he has shelter from the sun and plenty of water. Add in some ice cubes (frozen electrolytes are great) to keep it cool longer. If at all possible, allow your dog to stay in the kitchen or laundry room where he can enjoy the cold floor. If not, consider investing in a cooling vest with cold packs built into the sides, a kiddie pool or a doggie day care pass for those extra hot days. Grooming While you may think that shaving a dog down in the summer will help keep it cool, it actually has the opposite effect. Your pet’s coat can keep them from overheating. In addition, shaving your pet can lead to sunburn. Brush your dog regularly to remove loose fur, but before picking up the shears, consult your veterinarian for advice. Know the Warning Signs According to the ASPCA, signs of heat distress include excessive panting or labored breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling and weakness. More severe symptoms can include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. If your dog is exhibiting any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.
