Imagine a world where teaching the very facts of our existence is against the law. This play, based on the 1925 Scopes “Monkey Trial,” delves into the teaching of evolution in public school—an act against the law in Tennessee in 1925. Examined are concepts relevant and even under attack today—the right to teach science as fact, not disputable opinion, and how some people respond when they believe their faith is being attacked. YOUR TOWN
Daycation By Jessica Graham
Sonoma TrainTown Railroad With several wineries in the region, Sonoma is often considered an adult getaway. But wine country can be enjoyed as a family destination, too! If you’re planning on making a day of it, and you have elementary schoolage children or younger, put Sonoma TrainTown Railroad on the itinerary. The main attraction is the train ride itself, but the venue also has railroad themed amusement rides, snacks and a gift shop. This means there are plenty of options for everyone to enjoy while you wait for the next train to arrive at the “station.” The train boards at the front of TrainTown. Rather than lining up single file, would-be passengers wait along the length of the train making the boarding process a mad dash as people try to find seats. Make sure your whole party is ready to hop on when the train stops. During the 20-minute
excursion, you’ll travel through tunnels and over bridges to the miniature town of Lakeview, where you can explore the schoolhouse, local jail and visit the petting zoo. Animal feed is sold from dispensers, so be sure to bring quarters for the machines. The goats will be glad you did as they are ready and waiting for visitors! When the whistle blows, you’ll climb aboard the train again and return to the station. If you haven’t already done so, go for a spin on the Iron Horse Carousel, High Iron Ferris Wheel or Locomotion Scrambler. A word of warning: the ride attendants often operate more than one ride, so you may have a short wait. There are a number of restaurants close to TrainTown, but you’ll discover greater dining choices if you head to historic Sonoma Plaza. Here, you’ll find a myriad of wine-tasting rooms
and unique restaurants, many of which offer local wines. The plaza is walkable, and as you meander through the various alleyways, you’ll be charmed by the old adobe storefronts and rustic cobblestones. Stop by the statue of the Bear Flag Revolt in the center of the plaza to learn about how California was declared a Republic. You can also pay a visit to Mission San Francisco Solano, which is the 21st and last of the California missions. There are two play structures available for any young historians in your group. If you go: Sonoma TrainTown Railroad is located at 20264 Broadway, Sonoma. Open 10am – 5pm on weekends through June 1, daily during the summer. TrainTown may close due to
inclement weather. Tickets for the train are $7.50 each. All visitors 12 months and older require a ticket. The train is wheelchair accessible. Other ride coupons are $3.75 each or five for $14.75. Height restrictions may apply. For more information about the Sonoma TrainTown Railroad, visit TrainTown.com or call 707.938.3912. To learn more about Sonoma Plaza, visit SonomaPlaza.com. Sassy and Southern! Bring on Fat Tuesday with some finger-licking, hometown, mouth-watering, delicious southern specialties. by Brandy Hart
More Local Dining at YourTownMonthly.com/Places-to-Eat
This is the holy grail of southern comfort food in the county. The hidden Louisiana-style downtown eatery is quaint and sparkling clean, with a welcoming knowledgable staff that’s located just a few blocks from the Fairfield courthouse. The menu is large and in charge with all the sweet and savory southern favorites from catfish to shrimp creole, oxtail to smothered pork chops or baby back ribs to chicken and waffles. Many dishes are served with one or two choices from 12 specialty sides. Make sure to leave room for one of the gorgeous desserts proudly displayed as you enter. We gazed over some menu specialties, then took our wait staff’s advice and started with a fabulous warm cup of traditional gumbo made with chicken, sausage, shrimp and crab. The flavor was homemade and delicious, and the plentiful chunks of seafood were just a tease for what was to come. Next, we dove into the pork spare ribs with sides of greens, sweet potatoes and corn bread ... oh my! The barbecue was to die for, the greens were tender and cooked to perfection, and the sweet potatoes will remind you of grandma’s cooking! Chicken and waffles were next in our queue and let me tell you, the chicken was perfectly crispy outside and moist and flavorful inside with no hint of grease. The waffle was slightly sweet and crispy, with a soft and delicious center. Owner Cheryl’s Chez Soul Restaurant is a gem to be enjoyed! Patrons of all ages are welcome with Senior Wednesdays, Military Fridays, Family Specials and a kids’ menu. Lunch is priced from $5.95-10.95 and dinners from $11.95-32.95. The full menu is downloadable online at ChezSoulSouthernCuisine.com. Open Tues-Thurs 11am-8pm, Fri 11am-9pm, Sat 12-9pm and Sun 127pm. Closed Mondays. Chez Soul is located at 711 Madison St. in Fairfield. 707-427-3338.

You’ll arrive to swinging sounds playing streetside and the ONLY outside sidewalk dining in the city. All dishes on the everchanging menu are delicious — with daily hot chef specials that you’ll definitely want to come back for! The savory fried catfish, po’boy, spinach salad w/ caramelized roasted veggies and a fabulous vinaigrette dressing, beignets and sweet corn hushpuppies are just a small sampling on the menu! Lunch items range from $7-13. The Workshop is open Tues-Fri 11am-2:30pm, Sat 8am-2:30pm. 511 Claverie Way, Benicia. 707-747-6028.

Celebrate Mardi Gras at The Palms! Rhythmtown-Jive will bring a little Mardi Gras magic to Winters and deliver their unique blend of rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, zydeco and jump-swing. Special guests The K-Girls (Keta Bill and Kathy Kennedy from Big Bang Beat) and the soulful Mz. Dee Logwood will join the energetic group to perform songs that pay tribute to the rich tradition of female lead and harmony singers in New Orleans.
What’s your dream vacation? Going on an ocean cruise, visiting a sunny beach resort or maybe a skiing adventure? Would you take the whole family or go on a honeymoon? How about if it was all paid for? That could be a reality for the grand prize winner in this year’s Solano Wine & Food Jubilee Raffle. This year’s top prize is a $15,000 Dream Vacation, courtesy of Wasserman Travel. The prize has been donated by Jim Kellogg, in memory of his wife, Wendy Wasserman-Kellogg, a NorthBay Healthcare Foundation board member who lost her battle with cancer last September. Don’t want to take time off? Take the $15,000 in cash, the other option offered to the Grand Prize winner. Also new this year is a Tribute Prize – a private tour of Pixar Animation Studios, in memory of Adam Burke, former Foundation board member who also lost his battle with cancer in 2018. As in years past, the Jubilee raffle offers additional cash prizes totaling $10,000, with 12 winners of $125, 10 winners of $500, one winner of $1,000 and one $2,500 winner. Since only 2,500 tickets will be sold, the odds of winning something are about one in 100, according to Jim Kellogg, raffle chair. Raffle tickets are $35 each or three for $100, and can be purchased by calling 707-646-3133, purchased with a credit card by fax at 707-646-3135, in person at the NorthBay Healthcare Foundation office at 4500 Business Center Drive in Fairfield, Jackson Medical Supply at 506 Main Street in Vacaville, or Wasserman Travel at 366 Merchant St. in Vacaville. The winning tickets will be drawn at the 32nd annual Jubilee, set for May 18, 2019. Ticketholders need not be present to win, but those who do attend will experience Solano County’s finest opportunity to mingle and socialize while enjoying an evening of wine, brews, food and great music, all while benefitting a great cause – the programs of NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement.

Spring Pet Care Tips by Kelli Wayne
Spring is coming and it’s time to celebrate the change of seasons with your four-legged friends. Make sure they stay safe this time of year with the following tips and reminders.
Allergies Springtime can bring many different kinds of allergies to pets that you don’t normally see other times of the year. Some of these can include contact allergies (caused by something your pet comes in direct contact with), food allergies or environmental allergies. If you suspect your pet has an allergy, you can try using home air purifiers, clean inside your home using a damp cloth and keep your pet indoors during the early morning and late evening when pollen counts are their highest. Spring Cleaning Spring is typically the time of year when we try to rid our homes of any unwanted items. It’s the perfect time to also remove anything that can be harmful or hazardous to your pet. Some examples of items that could be within their range are: medications, rodenticides and insecticides, household cleaning products, poisonous indoor house plants and strings, rubber bands or yarn—which your pet could swallow and choke on. Outdoor Gardening Outdoor projects usually top the list for spring, and with that you’ll want to make sure your garden is pet
friendly. Do some research on any new plants, flowers and/or vegetables you’re thinking about introducing to your yard to make sure they’re nontoxic to your pet. If you use fertilizers, herbicides or mulch, some ingredients in these products can be dangerous if ingested by your dog or cat. If you can, it’s best to refrain from using these types of products in a yard shared with an animal, but if you must use them to control weeds or insects, make sure you follow the directions carefully and store the product where your pet cannot reach.
Pesky Pests Flea and tick season is upon us, so you may want to consider a regimen for controlling them. Mosquitoes are also very active in springtime and are especially prevalent where there is standing water. These pests can carry serious diseases like West Nile Virus, roundworms and heartworms. Outdoor water dishes or birdbaths should regularly be cleaned and replaced with fresh water. Also, check around and empty any standing water in flower pots or empty buckets where water can collect. ID & Microchipping Warmer weather means more outdoor activities for you and your pet. Make sure their collar has up-to-date address and telephone information on the identification tag. Give your pet that added extra level of protection by having them microchipped in the event they lose their collar. Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are easily implanted during a routine visit just under the skin between the animal’s shoulder blades. If your pet becomes lost or separated from you, a handheld scanner (most veterinarian offices or shelters have one) can read the information you provided when the dog was registered.
Warmer Days With the warmer weather approaching, temperatures inside a car can rise dramatically—even with a window slightly open. According to the ASPCA, signs of heat distress include excessive panting or labored breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling and weakness. More severe symptoms can include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. If your dog is exhibiting any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately. If you see a dog sitting in a hot, parked car, call your local police nonemergency number and hey will send a unit to investigate the dog’s welfare.

Why do business in Dixon? There is a great community with immense opportunity here. I was born and (partially) raised in Dixon and never thought that I would come back and settle down here. I had a vision of working and living amongst skyscrapers and once I experienced that, I longed for and appreciated what Dixon is. A town small in size but rich in history, agriculture and opportunity. Coming back to the land that raised me and working on the property my family lives on is a dream come true. I look forward to sharing Araceli Farms! What might we not know about your business? While we specialize in all things Lavender, we also place a heavy emphasis on serving our community. We have workshops, groups and a community that we feel very blessed to foster. We want to use our platform to empower Dixon, its local businesses and show off our agricultural roots. We are also a woman-run business! What benefits you most about being a chamber member? How helpful and eager the chamber is to always answer any questions and relay information to its members and the community. You can really feel them rooting for your success & it means a lot to us at Araceli Farms!
