o you already have your summer vacation plans nailed down? If not, the Mendocino Coast is a trip you should add to your list. For the more spontaneous, tuck this spot away for a future spur-ofthe-moment daycation. Either way, you’ll be delighted when you go as there is much to see and do. At 115 feet, the Point Arena Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the West Coast. Visitors can reach the top by climbing a spiral staircase comprised of 145 steps. The 360-degree view that you’re rewarded with when you get there will make your ascent worthwhile. A tour guide in the lighthouse’s tower will discuss the area’s rich ocean topography and sea life. While you’re gazing at the breathtaking view, keep your eyes
peeled for whale spouts, tails, and breaches. Humpback whales can be seen year-round, and this is the pathway for migrating gray whales from late November through May. The lighthouse is open for both day and night tours as well as lodging, so if you’ve ever dreamed of life as a lighthouse keeper, now is your chance to experience that firsthand. Best of all, ocean views are guaranteed! No trip to the Mendocino Coast would be complete without a visit to one-of-a-kind Glass Beach. Despite the name, Glass Beach is actually composed of three beaches in MacKerricher State Park in Fort Bragg. According to lore, each time a sailor is lost at sea, the mermaids cry and their tears wash up on shore
in the form of colorful sea glass. The sea glass at Glass Beach, however, has a far less romantic past. As a visit to the Sea Glass Museum will explain, these beaches were all once former city dumps. As was common years ago in sea coast towns, garbage was dumped into the ocean. After being pelted and churned by pounding waves and sand, the glass from perfume and prescription bottles and taillights has been refined into polished pieces of brilliant sea glass, which now cover the shoreline. The assortment of these treasures makes for a memorable walk along the beach. It should be noted that while the glass is beautiful to look at and more than a little tempting to take, state beach rules prohibit collecting.
Another “must do” is Mendocino Headlands State Park. It’s a great way to finish your visit, as the secluded beaches and walking trails on the cliffs are considered prime spots for watching the sunset. But you don’t need to arrive just before nightfall this is also a great place for wildflower spotting, hiking, surfing, and fishing. If you go: The Point Arena Lighthouse is located at 45500 Lighthouse Road, Point Arena. Tours are $7.50 per adult, $1 for children ages 5-11. Children under 5 are free. In March, Downtown Fairfield gained a new dining choice on Texas Street. Saffron, an upscale Indian Food Restaurant, opened and it didn’t take long to gain popularity. They may be new to Fairfield, but the owner, Romy, has had a loyal Solano following for many years. After taking in the beautiful decor (including the stunning chandelier in the entryway) and settling in to our booth, we ordered a Combo Appetizer which included vegetable samosa, aloo tikki, and vegetable pakoras served with mango chutney, mint cilantro, and tamarind sauces. We knew this was going to be a great beginning to a delicious meal! When learning of Saffron’s authentic tandoor oven, we ordered Pepper Chicken Tandoor, a zesty dish marinated in yogurt and spices. We also chose the Prawn Korma, a cashew nut based prawn curry with nutmeg and raisins. We had a hard time choosing from the extensive list of naan and bread but settled on the garlic and cilantro to complement our meal. Both dishes were served with rice. All meals are prepared to order allowing diners the option to spice things up (or down). We were happy with taste and aroma at the “medium” spice level. It was a chilly day so we ordered hot green tea, but plan on returning soon to taste a more adventurous Indian tea and a specialty cocktail. Saffron has a full bar with seating and a television. They also serve wines along with both draft and bottled beers. For those in for lunch during the work week or have limited time, the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is suggested. Filled with their most popular items of main dishes, sides and more, it is $11.99. Saffron also has a variety of traditional Indian desserts such as kheer and gulab jamun. Saffron is located at 739 Texas St., and you can reach them by phone for reservations, group dining and take out at 707-434-1313.

Chinese food enthusiasts from Sacramento to Fairfield travel to Downtown Winters to visit Ocean Restaurant. Established in 1997, this quaint, family-owned establishment focuses on simple cooking methods using fresh produce and ingredients. Relatively new to the menu are the Spicy Chicken Wings. Large in size and glazed with a spicy sauce with a subtle sweetness, they are a finger lickin’ must try. Our first dinner choice was the Kung Pao Three Delight, a dish packed with chicken, beef and prawns in a delicious spicy sauce. To balance out the meats in the Kung Pao, we decided on the Satay Vegetables. This tasty dish was filled with fresh vegetables, and the sauce was nutty, sweet and spicy at the same time. We thought the spice level on our dinners was perfect, but if you really want to amp things up, you can request extra spicy when placing your order. Tacos Jalisco’s is an unassuming, comfortable venue with a small dining room with family-style seating. They serve delicious Mexican food served quickly, piping hot, at an affordable price. We started off with the “Vuelve a la Vida” a cool, colorful and tasty shrimp, octopus and scallop cocktail. We dined on the Steak Ranchero, a tender top sirloin smothered in fresh ranchero sauce. We also ordered a variety of tacos and found them to be authentic Mexican street tacos. If you like Menudo, Sunday is the day to go. Saturday, June 23 • 1pm-4pm On a sun soaked Saturday in June, there’s no better place to sip beer with friends than at the 5th Annual Big Solano Brew-Haha at the Al Porter Plaza on Davis Street in Vacaville. Pouring regional craft beers, ciders and ales, as well as a few local wines, this year’s event is sure to be the largest and benefits Child Haven, Inc., Solano County’s oldest and premiere non-profit agency serving children traumatized by abuse, neglect, domestic and community violence and sexual assault. The outdoor brew-themed festival also features live music, a grand raffle for 99 Bottles of Craft Beer and great local food. This year, the Vacaville Fire Department will go “grill to grill” against the Vacaville Police Department in their first ever “Guns and Hoses Cook-off”. Individual entry to the festival includes unlimited samples of local and regional craft brews, ales and limited release specialty beers. About 25 brewers are expected to attend offering over 80+ beers. Local wineries will be on hand to offer an alternative to the brews. The day will also include home-brewing demonstrations and beer themed games and activities. Tickets do not include food. Organizers are looking for brewers, wineries, and food vendors to participate onsite (no cost for a table!), as well as local businesses to donate items for the raffle. Donations are tax-deductible and they are expecting more than 400 at this year’s event.
