HOLIDAYS
Groundhog Day
Wednesday, February 2 This superstitious tradition has been predicting the start of spring in the United States since the 1800s. Held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, crowds gather to watch as a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow. If he sees his shadow, it’s said to signify that winter will last for six more weeks.
Lincoln’s Birthday
Saturday, February 12 On February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky. While it has never been declared an official federal holiday, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Texas, California, Missouri and New York observe the celebration of the 16th U.S. President’s birth.
Valentine’s Day
Monday, February 14 What began as a Christian feast day honoring various saints named Valentine throughout history, the date has become a celebration of romantic love in many countries. One such historical figure, St. Valentine of Rome, was said to have performed acts such as restoring sight to the blind and officiating weddings to those forbidden to marry.
Presidents’ Day & Washington’s Birthday Monday, February 21
While February 22 marks George Washington’s birthday, the holiday was expanded to celebrate all who have held the title of President of the United States. The specific men honored vary from state to state, but all observe Presidents’ Day on the third Monday of February.
Mardi Gras
Tuesday, March 1 Translated from French to mean “Fat Tuesday” in English, the Mardi Gras celebration traces its origins to medieval Europe. Also known as “Carnival,” the holiday is held on the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Those celebrating Mardi Gras would binge on all the rich, fatty foods in their homes before they began fasting and eating only fish for many weeks, as is customary during Lent.
