Expand your universe at Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland. Founded as an observatory in 1883, the center still showcases an outdoor observatory deck with giant historic telescopes. Inside, Chabot is all about fun and exploration for kids of all ages. See what it takes to survive in space in the Beyond Blastoff exhibit. Guests can climb inside space capsules, experience zero gravity, find out how astronauts exercise and get an answer to the ever-pressing question, “How do you go to the bathroom in space?” Bill Nye’s Science Lab provides an interactive experience that demonstrates how the climate has changed over the course of the past centuries, and kids will have lots of fun putting on lab coats and exploring the Discovery Lab, which is equipped with computers, microscopes and a light table. Admission includes two must-see planetarium shows that run between 35 and 45 minutes long. Catch Tales of the Mayan Skies, the story of the Maya civilization. Learn about this ancient culture and find out how much influence they still have today. Guests can journey through the galaxy searching for evidence of life in We Are Bill Nye’s Science Lab Aliens. Or follow the Google Lunar XPRIZE competition with Back to the Moon for Good, which aims to spur lunar exploration with $40 Million in incentive based prizes paid to a private company that lands safely on the surface of the Moon, travel 500 meters above, below, or on the lunar surface, and sends back two “Mooncasts” to Earth. Planetarium shows are scheduled throughout the day. If you work up an appetite while exploring, stop in the Science Café for a hot dog, salad or sandwich.

Pack up the family on an overnight adventure during Slumber with the Stars, take a guided night hike, or schedule a date night, which features a 3 to 4 mile guided hike with discussion about the natural environment, an overview of the night’s sky and astronomy basics as well as star gazing through provided binoculars. Afterwards, guests may attend a private cocktail hour before exploring the museum. Dinner can be purchased in the Space Café. Dates and admission for special events can be found online. For an additional fee, guests can celebrate the 40th Anniversary of LASERIUM’s®, a cosmic laser concert synced to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin or The Beatles. Laser visual effects have come a long way in the past 40 years! LASERIUM® plays most Friday and Saturday evenings through January.
