Stoplight Bowl at Açaí-Me Superfoods CafÊ

AÇA-ME SUPERFOODS CAFÉ

The açaĂ (pronounced ahsigh-ee) berry has arrived at the Danville Livery. Research on the reddish, purple fruit native to Central and South America has focused on its antioxidant benefits. Regardless if it will really help prevent disease, it absolutely does make a delicious, filling and uber healthy meal option. AçaĂ-Me’s Mt. Diablo Bowl won me over. They blend their açaĂ with apple juice, bananas, kale (no, you can’t taste it), almond milk, strawberries and flax seed. The frozen mixture is topped with bananas, strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, granola, honey and goji berries. Bowls range from $4.50 to $13.50. The staff gets bonus points for being both speedy and allergy aware. EatMyAcai.com or 925.984.2636.

KABAB-BURGER Tucked away near Trader Joe’s in Lafayette, Kabab-Burger features great tasting Mediterranean and Middle Eastern selections, or for those who prefer, a couple of good burger options. The sampler platter with hummus, Turkish salad, baba ganoush, spicy eggplant, pickles, tahini, falafel balls, dolmas and pita is perfect for sharing. If you’re used to supermarket hummus, you’re in for a treat. Kabab-Burger’s is freshly made, has a great texture and is perfectly spiced. The kababs were a hit. A friend and I enjoyed the chicken breast and lamb versions. Both were tender and flavorful. Kababs come with rice, hummus, and an Israeli salad of diced tomatoes and cucumbers. Prices range from $7 to $16. Beer and wine only. Many vegetarian and gluten-free options are available. Kabab-Burger.com or 925.297.6343.

COCINA MEXICO

SALAD MAKERS

There’s no shortage of Mexican restaurants in Pleasanton, but Cocina Mexico earns a gold star for serving up quality dishes quickly and at bargain prices. Most of the usual suspects are available both at lunch and dinner. I enjoyed a chicken burrito bowl, which was really a chicken platter brimming with tender, marinated chicken, rice, beans (black or pinto), sour cream, guacamole and cheese. Go on a weekend to try their pozole and menudo (pork and beef stew). They are regular sellouts. Minor quibble: there’s no place to set your chips down at the salsa bar, so you’re going to have to make two trips to your table. Prices range from $2.99 to $6.99. Beer is available. Like Coc e co oon Facebook ceboo or o Cocina-Mexico 25.485.3010 1 . 925.485.3010.

The name pretty much says it all. Livermore’s Salad Makers’ specialty is freshly made salads. The cobb salad includes a mix of organic greens, romaine and iceberg lettuce tossed with grilled chicken, bacon, crumbled blue cheese, carrots, egg, avocado and sweet tomatoes with just enough ranch dressing. I ordered a full size and couldn’t eat it all. The Asian chicken salad not only tasted great, but had a nice presentation as well. It features organic mixed greens and carrots topped with almonds, mandarin oranges and wonton strips. You may want to stick to the salads, though. We ordered a combo with a turkey sandwich. The sandwich took a while and the turkey was processed. Prices range from $4.99 to $9. They also have pizza and a kid’s menu. SaladMakersInc.com or 925.243.9912.

DAYCATION Benicia

By Janet Fazio Benicia’s Bay Front

In 1853 California’s Capitol Building was in Benicia!

Before Sacramento became its permanent digs, the Bay Area was home to the capitol of California. The first two sessions of the legislature convened in San Jose. Poor conditions forced a move north to Vallejo for the third session. In 1853, politicos called Benicia home. Although Benicia only served as the seat of California’s government for 13 months, the classically designed capitol building remains and is open for tours. Exit Highway 780 at Central Benicia and head towards the water to begin your day exploring the city’s historic past. If you’re hungry, Sailor Jack’s on First Street is a good place to begin. Built in1868, the converted house got its start as a respectable sea captain’s home before becoming a notorious brothel. Now, they’re just famous for their menu—featuring a great seafood gumbo—and their Bloody Mary’s. Benicia’s Main Street Gift Shop is across from the restaurant. Here you can pick up a Historical Downtown Benicia Walking map, get information on upcoming events and satisfy your sweet tooth with a box of See’s Candy. Benicia State Capitol Historic Park is a short walk away. If you visit during the weekend, be sure to ask for Charlie. He will give you a personal tour, answer all of your questions and fill you in on the paranormal activities that have been observed at both the Capitol building and the adjacent Fischer-Hanlon House, a restored and furnished home representative of middleclass Benicia in the 1800s. There are many historical sites along your walk up First Street, including the old View from Sailor Jack’s Seafood Restaurant Solano Hotel site, which also

served as a Pony Express stop, and several saloons that were frequented by Jack London. Many of these now serve as art galleries and antique stores for your shopping pleasure. If you time it right, you can observe glass blowing at Lindsay Art Glass. The artists are at work most days Wednesday through Saturday. If you’d rather stay outdoors, the Benicia State Recreation Area features a botanical garden with more than 250 plant species on 3.5 acres as well as 2.25 miles of bike trails. Dogs on leash are permitted on the trails. Or, bring a kite to fly at the First Street Green, where wind is almost always a sure thing. Military buffs will enjoy a visit to the U.S. Army Arsenal. See the Clock Tower Fortress, the Commanding Officer’s Quarters Mansion and tour the Benicia’s view of the Carquinez Bridge Museum at the Camel Barns. Things to know: Benicia State Capitol Historic Park is open Thursday through Sunday. Admission is $2-$3 cash. Fischer-Hanlon house is open for tours on Sunday afternoons. Admission to FischerHanlon is included with the State Capitol Park fee. VisitBenicia.org/ History or 707.745.3385. Ghost Walks take place on the first and third Friday evenings at 8pm. Tours last approximately two hours and are $25 per person. BeniciaMainStreet.org or 707.745.9791. The Museum at Camel Barns Hours is open Wednesday through Sunday afternoons. Admission is $3-$5 cash and free for military personnel with ID. BeniciaHistoricalMuseum.org.

THE DELTA: ITS HISTORY, BEAUTY & ITS FUTURE With Naturalist Mike Moran

Saunter on a moderate level loop hike with only a few hundred feet in elevation change as Doc Hale interprets the Bay Miwok tribelets’ home territory. Visit village sites, bedrock milling stations, ceremonial cupule rocks, tsektsels (prayer circles), hunting blinds. and more. Doc will discuss the edible and medicinal plants, ethnobotany and material culture of the Native Americans. Track and observe wildlife as he discusses the geology and natural history of the region.

Surveys show that 80 percent of California’s residents are unfamiliar with the Delta and its importance to the state’s water supply. The water flowing past Big Break through the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers drains half of California’s watershed and creates the largest estuarine environment on Pacific shores – home to 70 species of birds and provides habitat for beavers, muskrats and river otters. Mike will tell about the fascinating history of this beautiful area.
