As the end of the school year rapidly approaches, parents are faced with planning visitation and timeshare that is appropriate for their children’s summer break. Here are three Do’s and two Don’ts to consider when designing your summer visitation: Do come up with specific dates and times for exchanging the children. This assists both the parents and the children in determining specific events that will take place during the summer. Such planning will also minimize the likelihood of conflict. Do provide accurate addresses and phone numbers for the locations where you will be spending your summer vacation time. Don’t presume the other parent knows the addresses of family or friends at your planned travel destinations. Do get permission for out of state or international travel. If you intend to take a trip with the children out the state or country, it is essential that you get written permission from the other parent and if necessary, court orders to establish the arrangement. Failure to have those written agreements or court orders in place can ruin a vacation where the children’s travel might be barred. This type of information can be a requirement on cruise ships. Don’t forget the need to have up-to-date children’s passports as well. llll Don’t make promises you can’t keep to the children. If you indicated that you are going to take them on a specific outing and then cancel at the last minute, this behavior will harm the trust level between you and your children. Don’t argue with your ex about unresolved parenting issues in front of the children. If you anticipate unpleasant exchanges with your ex, make arrangements to pick up and deliver the children at a time and place that will avoid negative contact. With over 30 years of experience in divorce and family law, Arlene D. Kock and her full servcie law firm has helped hundreds of clients with their divorce and family law matters. @ArleneKock for up to date articles of concern on family law, business and real estate.

Sweet Thursday with author

JOHN LESCROART Thursday, June 26 ˜ 7 - 8pm

John Lescroart returns to Sweet Thursday to discuss his 25th novel, The Keeper, featuring Dismas Hardy and Abe Glitsky on the hunt for clues about a woman who has gone missing. On the evening before Thanksgiving, Hal Chase, a guard in the San Francisco County Jail, drives to the airport to pick up his stepbrother for the weekend. When they return, Hal’s wife, Katie, has disappeared without a clue. Against a backdrop of conspiracy and corruption, ambiguous motives and suspicious alibis, an obsessed Glitsky closes in on the elusive truth. As other deaths begin to pile up, he realizes, perhaps too late, that the next victim might be himself.

U-PICK FARMS & WINE TASTING By Janet Fazio

Photo: HNVWines. com

I

f you are a regular at the Farmers’ Market, you already know that your favorite fruits and summer vegetables are ripe for the picking. But are you aware that you can actually go pick them yourself? In the 1970s, East Contra Costa growers organized to form an organization called Harvest Time, so they could do more than just sell to packers. Any farm or ranch located within the county was welcome to join. By the mid-1980s, 25 growers were part of the organization. Today, Harvest Time includes more than 40 growers who sell direct to the consumer, most of whom make their home in the agricultural core of Contra Costa County, Brentwood. In early May, I headed east on Highway 4 on a Saturday morning to check out a few of the u-pick farms in Brentwood. It was too early in the season for my favorite, cherries, but the fields were lush with strawberries sweet enough to make you swear off store-bought berries for good. Some of the farms sell boxes for 25¢. Others will let you bring your own. Both fruit and veggies (fava beans were also available for picking) are sold by the pound at very reasonable rates. I paid $1.50 a pound for strawberries. You can literally just jump in the car to Brentwood and follow the signs along Walnut Avenue to various farms that have u-pick options. If you’re a planner or if you’re bringing the family, spend some time on Harvest4You.com to map out a plan of attack first. Harvest Time also has a

handy smart phone app that is free to download. Both will tell you what is in season, tips for picking, farm locations and hours and whether the farm is certified organic. Cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums, pluots, apricots and tomatoes are all in season and available for u-pick in June and July. Some farms grow their fruit trees low so there is no ladder climbing involved. Others will provide ladders as well as buckets. In August, Brentwood corn is at its finest. Several farms sell fresh eggs year round. Sorry—you can’t “pick these yourself. After a morning of picking, I headed back to historic downtown Brentwood for lunch followed by wine tasting. The award-winning Hannah Nicole Vineyards is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5pm. CoCo County Wine Co. is a wine tasting bar featuring selections from various growing regions throughout California. They are open Saturdays from 11am and evenings during the week. Things to know: Try to go in the morning when the weather is cooler. Bring a hat and sunscreen. Closed-toe shoes are highly recommended. Children are never allowed on ladders. Many farms are cash only. Check the app or website for farms that accept credit/debit cards. Bring a box or container to take your produce home. You must buy what you pick. For more information, visit Harvest4You.com.

OUTDOOR DINING

Carolina pulled pork from Sauced

As the days get longer, the evenings get warmer: marking the beginning of outdoor dining season. By Janet Fazio

SAUCED

MANGIA MI

I love barbecue. But I don’t love smelling like barbecue, which is a hazard for those who frequent authentic, wood burning barbecue restaurants—that is until Sauced in Livermore, with its large, wrap-around covered patio saved the day. My favorite is the Carolina pulled pork, slow cooked in a tangy vinegar based sauce. Sauced’s plates from the pit come with a choice of two sides. I paired the smoky baked beans, which have just the right amount of sweetness, with their crunchy sour apple claw. Brisket weighs in at a close second. It’s tender and juicy. Can’t decide? Make it a combo. Bourbon lovers will be in heaven at Sauced. Try a flight or sample their new private label, Hawg Wash. Prices range from $8 to $17. Full bar. SaucedBBQandSpirits. com or 925.961.1300.

Let’s be honest. There is no drought when it comes to Italian restaurants along Main Street in Pleasanton. On the south end of the street, Mangia Mi has a patio perfect for people watching (as well as their other location in downtown Danville.) Skip the usual salad suspects and order the roasted beet salad instead. Red and yellow beets accompany a bed of wild arugula topped with almonds and goat cheese. It’s big enough to split. Pastas shine at Mangia Mi. Rigatoni alla carbonara is a decadent dish of pasta topped with parmesan cream sauce, pancetta, bacon and peas. Or, stay on the lighter side and opt for scampi, featuring spaghetti, prawns, lemon, garlic and white wine. Both are terrific. EntrÊes range from $13 to $25. Full bar. Mangia-Mi.com or 925.846.2426.

THE COOPERAGE

PIATTI

Last year Andrew McCormick, City Tavern founder and long-time Lafayette resident, took over the space at Petar’s, giving it a great city vibe. Combine that with an inspired menu and cozy patio, and it’s no surprise that the Cooperage has quickly become a local favorite. The brussels sprout salad is a good starting point. Served warm, the shaved sprouts are tossed with bacon, crispy shallots and vinaigrette, then topped with a poached egg. For grill lovers, the roasted bone-in pork loin on a bed of sautÊed kale and chard is a home run. The two-plus inch thick chop was flavorful and tender enough to cut with a butter knife. If you crave something out of the ordinary, opt for the grilled jumbo shrimp and smoky white grits with tomatillo salsa verde and spicy shrimp sauce. It’s outstanding. EntrÊes range from $18 to $40. Full bar. TheCooperageLafayette. com or 925.298.5915.

A beautiful water fountain combined with lush green plants creates just the right ambiance to give Piatti in Danville my vote as having the most relaxing enclosed patio in town. From their soups and salads to their decadent desserts, Piatti is committed to creating seasonably inspired dishes that taste farmers’ market fresh. Piatti’s creamy tomato and fresh basil soup is a great start to any meal. From there it’s a toss up between which is better: the wood oven salmon, the free range chicken with brussels sprouts or the risotto with grilled asparagus, guanciale and grilled radicchio. If pasta is in order, the angel hair lightly tossed with marinara, roasted roma tomatoes and basil is one of the lighter options. EntrÊes range from $12 to $27. Full bar. Piatti.com/Danville or 925.838.2082.
