Black Diamond Mines By Janet Fazio

L

ong ago, along a winding road not so far away, you could find the town sites of Somersville, Stewartville and Nortonville. Today, there is very little remaining of the 1860s sites, collectively known as the Black Diamond area, which was once home to California’s largest coal mining operation. Nearly four million tons of coal (“black diamonds�) were removed from the earth below what is now Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. The coal mines closed at the turn of the century. In the 1920s, Hazel-Atlas, a glass maker in Oakland, began mining the area for sand. While hiking and horseback riding along the trails in the regional preserve, now part of the East Bay Regional Park District, guests are provided with stunning views worthy of climbing steep trails. However, what is underground is just as intriguing. The Greathouse Visitor Center is housed in a chamber that was excavated in the mid-1920s. The center features displays, photographs, videos, brochures and artifacts depicting both the coal and sand mining eras. The Hazel-Atlas Mine Tour provides guests with a walk into the sand mine to see the ore chutes and mine office. After a couple of hours of hiking along the tops of the hills, I headed inside them for the 90 minute tour. The tour starts with a 30 minute slide show and lecture on the history of the area, the people who called it home, the coal and sand mining industries and what remains of it

today. After the lecture, guests put on a hard hat and grab a flashlight for an hour tour around a small portion of the 8-mile mine. Along the way, your guide will point out portions of the old coal mine that can be seen in the walls, as well as geological artifacts that suggest that the coast line once ventured much further inland than it does today. If time permits, take the short walk over to Rose Hill Cemetery. The park district is in the process of restoring what remains of the old headstones. If you have information regarding people buried there or know the location of any missing headstones (no questions asked), please contact the park district office. Things to know: Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and if you’re doing any hiking, some snacks. Parking is $5 per car. Somersville Road is under construction, but detour signs will get you to the park entrance. The Greathouse Visitor Center is open weekends and some holidays from 10am to 4:30pm. Admission to the visitor center is free. Purchase tickets for the Hazel-Atlas Mine Tour at the visitor center for $5 each. Bring a sweatshirt or a light jacket to wear on the mine tour. The mine maintains a constant temperature of 57 degrees year round. Tours are suggested for ages 7 and up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Tours are scheduled at noon and 3pm weekends only, March through November. Group reservations are welcome by calling 888-EBPARKS, option 2. Camping is permitted. EBParks.org/Parks/Black_Diamond.

The Walnut Creek Concert Band presents their annual Summer “Pops� Concert, an entertaining program of light classical music and marches. This year’s Summer “Pops� Concert will feature Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dance Music from West Side Story and John Williams’ Star Wars Trilogy. The band will continue to pay tribute to Walnut Creek’s Centennial with a salute to the National Anthem, Sousa marches and a special guest appearance by the Clarinet Fusion, a bay area clarinet choir founded by Walnut Creek Concert Band member Karyn Weber. The band is under the direction of Harvey Benstein, with assistant conductor, Johnny Johnson.

The Skull Show Now through August 31 Closing the season, the Bedford Gallery will narrow its focus to the physical and historical world of the skull. The Skull Show examines the role that skulls have played in the historical register, as memento mori, traditional religious icons and vanitas themes in still life paintings. The Skull Show will also highlight the role the skull has played in the contemporary arts, exploring its appearance in counter cultures such as skate, surf and tattoo, as well as urban graffiti projects.
