Divorced parents can avoid conflict by planning ahead for back to school and special events, vacations, birthdays and other activities. Such planning is important for parents and children alike because it creates an atmosphere of certainty and is reassuring to everyone. Be sure to pin down the dates and hours of pick up and drop off with a reasonable grace period if commute corridors are busy during the designated exchange times. Keep the other parent in the loop: Even if you are the primary custodial parent, share information with the lesser time share parent. Information on school schedules, special friends, planned trips and how the children are generally doing provides continuity to each parent. Admit when you make a mistake: Did you arrive late for a pick up or drop off? In the last exchange did you fail to return all of the items that were needed for the following school day? It won’t hurt to sincerely apologize. In fact, this approach can demonstrate that you are bigger than what happened and that your focus is on getting it right for the children. Seek help: If communication with the other parent is badly damaged, consider co-parenting counseling. Avoiding conflict is the best way for everyone to have an enjoyable school year and the holidays. Knowing your rights is the best legal strategy and the starting point to producing the best outcome when returning to the family law court.

Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historic Park By Janet Fazio

A

group of women in their 80s and 90s made national headlines this past March when they traveled to Washington D.C. to tell their stories to the powers that be. Known as “Rosie the Riveters,� these women were just a handful of the six million women around the country who entered the work force or left their “pink-collar� nursing, teaching or secretarial jobs to help out during the war effort. By 1944, nearly half the workforce at the Richmond Kaiser Shipyards were women working as riveters, welders and scalers. Today, three sites in Richmond make up the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historic Park which honors these women. Due to the geography of the docks, traveling by car between the three sites is easiest. Or bring a bike and ride the Bay Trail between the three. Start your day with a stop at the Rosie the Riveter Memorial in Marina Bay Park. It’s open year round, dawn to dusk. Then head over to the visitor center. Here you can learn about the rich history of the shipyards and the role that our local “Rosies� played in the war effort. There are interactive displays and free movies that tell the story of the women as well as give insight

If time permits, stop for lunch at Assemble, right across from the visitor’s center located at the far end the old Ford assembly plant parking lot. They maintain their own Victory Garden that they harvest for their recipes, which they say “revisit the roots of American food.� Lunch here is worth the trip to Richmond in itself. Next up in your trip back in time to the 1940s is a tour of the SS Red Oak Victory ship. The Red Oak is the last remaining Victory Ship created in the Richmond Kaiser Shipyards. Tours begin on the main deck and include visits to the gun platform, cabins, infirmary, officer’s mess, wheel house and more. The ship hosts movie nights, showing historic films down below. The screen is small, and seating less than luxurious, but for a $5 donation, it’s worth the experience. Monthly pancake breakfasts and overnights for groups are also available. Things to know: Bring layers. It can be windy and brisk along the docks. The visitor center is located at 1414 Harbour Way South in Richmond. It is open daily from 10am to 5pm with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Admission to the visitor center is free. Plan your trip online at NPS.gov/RORI. The SS Red Oak Victory is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 3pm. Inclement weather can force closure. There is a $5 fee to board the ship. Select two from an assortment of sides, or try the low carb option and pair the meat with a side salad. Rotisserie chicken, St. Louis style ribs, salads and a handful of sandwiches are all on the menu. The tri-tip is the star though. Located in a fairly nondescript strip mall in Danville, Royal Indian Grill may not look like much from the outside, but their menu more than makes up for it. Chicken tikka masala is a favorite. Royal Indian Grill’s recipe features white meat cooked in the familiar, rich tomato based cream sauce. If you like your food with a kick, try the lamb vindaloo. The lamb is tender and flavorful. Chunks of potatoes help cool the spicy sauce. Most dishes contain just meat in a sauce, so I like to round things out with aloo gobi, which is cauliflower and potato sautéed with ginger and garlic. Pablo Reservoir in El Sobrante. Choose from a half marathon, 5 mile or 5k. All of the runs will be on the Old San Pablo Dam, a stagecoach route used by horses, mules and later, automobiles from El Sobrante to Orinda. The half marathon is an out and back course with about 1/3 pavement and 2/3 trails, with plenty of scenery. After mile five you will have the challenge of running up the Briones Reservoir and then back home to the park. The five mile run is similar, just not as far. The 5K starts at the same location and is paved. The half marathon is at 8am, five-mile run at 8:05am and the 5K is at 8:10am. Parking will only be allowed at the entrance to the Reservoir, then walk to the staging area at the water. ($40-50).
