Buchan Beaders Crafting fantastic support for charity The Buchan Beaders Charity Fair on the 23rd of June raised £495 for Cancer Research UK, bringing the total raised in 2012 to £2,500. Most of the money has been raised from the tombola stall in the hall and the great work from the Hells Kitchen II team who serve up some nice homemade Soup & Sweet over lunchtime. Meeting on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the Rescue Hall, the Buchan Beaders are a group that make their own jewellery as well as a coffee, biscuit and a good old chuckle. In July 2011, Kath, who leads the group, took the plunge to set up a fair in the Rescue Hall to help the group and other local crafters to be able to sell their goods to the public on a regular basis. The fair has grown from strength to strength from an initial 7 stalls up to around 20 regular stall holders. During June this year, the group agreed to use proceeds from the stalls to donate 6 new 6ft trestle tables to the Rescue Hall that can be used for fairs and other public uses that the hall hosts. Kath said “there are tables that need to be moved from the stage, set up and then put back up onto the stage at the end of the fair. This involved a fair bit of manual handling and it was felt that some new tables would help. These new trestle tables have made a big difference.” 6 // www.YourTownCentre.co.uk // 07875 278627
Kath wants to thanks all the stall holders, customers, Kathleen Chalmers and the Hells Kitchen II team for their support over the last year and look forward to many more fairs in the future. The next fair, which is held monthly, is on Saturday 18th of August in the Rescue Hall from 11am. Do go along to visit the stalls, support your local crafters, Cancer Research UK and then enjoy some Soup & Sweet!
Kath also wishes to thank Waves Radio for their support in advertising the fairs on the radio.
The 2012 Marathon Read Aberdeenshire Libraries have launched their Summer Reading Challenge “The 2012 Marathon Read.” The challenge requires children to read six books of their own choice over the summer holidays and will last until Saturday the 25th of August. Each time a book is read or listened to, the readers will get a sticker for a card that they get to keep track of their reading. There are age appropriate prizes for those for those that do complete the challenge. There are three age groups available for children to enter – six years and under, seven to nine years, and 10+ years. Alongside the reading challenge, there will also be two fun competitions for children to enter, the first one involving creating a trophy and the second writing a short story about a day in the life of a hero or heroine.
Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure Committee, Councillor Isobel Davidson, said: “Last year 8,981 children took part in this challenge and it just seems to grow and grow in popularity. She also said “It would be great to see participant numbers hit the 9,000 mark this year.“ Details of how to take part can be found at www.Aberdeenshire.gov.uk/libraries or by talking to library staff.

Delish Fish Five generations of quality seafood
Your Town Centre paid a visit recently to The Old Smoke House on Ellis Street after coming across DelishFish on Twitter. We were very curious to learn about the move to the digital arena by the Milne family, 5th generation of fishermen, fish merchants and fish smokers. The fishing industry always seems to be in the news and it has been more negative than positive recently. It must be remembered that it is still an industry that provides a living for some, granted not as many as in years gone by, as well as a healthy option for the dinner table.
more. Lea-Ann invited us through to the preparation area to show us how the fish was selected, laid out and packed in purpose made “cool-boxes” that are used to ensure the fish arrives at its destination as fresh as it left. In doing this she also displayed a passion for ensuring good presentation so that the customers are delighted when they open up their order. John went on to say “We may not be the cheapest for fish, but quality is important to us. We pick our own fish at auction and then process it to the highest degree of being boneless and skinless as possible.”
Just as we came in the door, an order was on its way out. Bound for the Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery for next day delivery was 300 whole langoustines and 180 Haddocks! An unusually large order but one that John and his team were able to fulfi l. Th is was to be enjoyed by 200 delegates to Seafood Scotland sponsored dinner at the symposium.
If you are not in the habit of having fish for your tea, why not think about it soon. You could give this recipe a try out which was given to John by one of his loyal customers. Let us know if you try it out or if you have another fish recipe that you wish to share, please get in touch with us at hello@YourTownCentre.co.uk.
So delivering fresh fish to the whole of the UK is being done from here in Peterhead. We wanted to fi nd out
Oh, and if you are a Twitterer, go and follow John and his team @DelishFish or www.Twitter.com/DelishFish.

Theatre Modo During July, youngsters in Peterhead had an opportunity to participate in free theatre workshops that would see them take part in a parade in Aberdeen. Theatre Modo were asked to create a parade through the streets of Aberdeen on Saturday August the 4th as part of Aberdeen International Youth Festivals 40th Anniversary event. Hundreds are expected to line the streets to watch what is sure to be an exciting and spectacular parade. Your Town Centre met up with Martin Danziger at the Community Centre to find out a bit more. Theatre Modo specialises in participatory projects ranging from a single group performing to their peers to hundreds of participants coming together to create a huge spectacular. We also provide tailored workshops in circus, theatre and clowning to cater for all ages and abilities.
12 // www.YourTownCentre.co.uk // 07875 278627
This provides youngsters a chance to meet new friends, learn new skills in a positive and fun environment as well as creating a sense of achievement. Theatre Modo is open to all and what Martin has found is that once they have been along, they can’t wait for the next workshop or session. During 2011 Leviathan the Shell Fireworks Parade was held in Peterhead as well as a smaller Leviaden parade at Aden Country Park. This engaged almost 1000 young people from the area. Martin is hoping to learn shortly if there will be an event later this year where it is expected a similar number of youngsters will again be involved. Martin was keen to encourage more youngsters to try if they have not already done so. Keep an eye out for news of future events or you can visit their website www.TheatreModo.com or call Martin on 07973 963301

TODAY The 1st of July saw the project reach image number 50. A number I considered to be the first milestone and one that seem to come round really quickly. On discussing the project with friends I was tasked with capturing a sunrise for the milestone. A quick check on the internet revealed that sunrise was at 4.18am. Groan! I have been up before sunrise many a time in the past to capture some sunrise photography and was pleased to say that mission was accomplished that morning! I have recently reached image 69, this was another morning image but of the tide out down by the River Ugie. Whilst have been out capturing images for this project, it has re-ignited my passion for landscape photography in which I gained my licentiate from The Society of International Nature and Wildlife Photographers last year. This is something that I really want to get back into, taking pictures of our beautiful scenery here in Aberdeenshire and around Scotland. Once this project is complete I am hoping that the images will form part of an exhibition. It would be really good to see them all printed out and on display. I already have plans in place to publish them in a book, which all going well, will be on sale before the end of 2013. Just saying that date reminds me that there is still a lot pictures to be taken and a lot more work to do before then! A new image is uploaded everyday over at www.PeterheadToday.com. You can also follow the project on Twitter @PeterheadToday. If you have any questions about the project or my landscape photography, you can email me at scott@scottdonald.co.uk. 18 // www.YourTownCentre.co.uk // 07875 278627
