hello
Hello and welcome to Issue 4! We hope you like our cover page image; autumn for some is a favourite season as the colours change, the sun is lower and there is a fresh crispness in the air. We challenge you to get out your cameras, take some pictures of the falling leaves and the colours and send them in to us. This month’s issue saw us take a lunch date out to Buchan Braes Hotel and into our own kitchen to make some shortbread! The clubs and groups pages have been updated and now that the Olympics and Paralympics have come to a close, you can get up off the couch and take part in the Peterhead Cycle Challenge. Peterhead may also see the formation of a Civic Society. This is in the planning stages at the moment, but you can read a little more about this on page 18.

The Peterhead Cycle Challenge Now that the Olympics, Paralympics and a fantastic summer of sport have come to a close, why not get out on your bike? The Peterhead Cycle Challenge has been launched recently and runs until the 31st of October. Cycling is fun; you can get out with your friends and see more of where you live. What’s more, regular exercise such as cycling can help to combat stress! All you need to do is go to visit www.bikeboost.org.uk/aberdeenshire and sign up as part of a participating organisation or as an individual. Log your journeys on your bike and it will calculate the calories burned. Once at the site you will also be able to download the cycle map for Peterhead and also visit the Aberdeenshire Council’s Cycling pages. Challenge yourself, your family, friends and colleagues as a fun way to make a difference. Remember you can sign up at any point during the challenge... so go on sign up, get out and see what you can achieve.

Ingredients: 175g of Plain Flour 55g of Caster Sugar 115g of Salted Butter Pinch of Salt
Preparation: Grab a baking sheet, greased ready to use Cut your butter into small pieces Preheat your oven to 150degC, 300degF or Gas Mark 2 Remember and wash your hands!
Shortbread Your Town Centre decided to get in to the kitchen recently and try our hand at some homebaking. This month we show off our attempt at making some shortbread!
Get mixing: 1 In a bowl mix together the flour, caster sugar and the salt.
2
Now take your small pieces of butter and work into the dry ingredients until you end up with a soft dough.
3
Roll the dough out on a lightly floured board and use your cookie cutters. Place your shapes on to your greased baking tray
4 5
Prick the dough with a fork all over.
6
Once coloured and firm, remove from the oven and allow to cool on the baking tray. Sprinkle some caster sugar over the shortbread
7
After cooling, remove from the baking sheet and place on a wire rack to cool further.
Place in to the preheated oven for around 50 minutes.
We used round cookie cutters but why not try and get some different shaped cookie cutters for Halloween or Christmas!
If you tried this recipe or have a different recipe to make shortbread, get in touch. Send in your comments and pictures to hello@YourTownCentre.co.uk
Enjoy! 12 • www.YourTownCentre.co.uk • October 2012

Lunch for two? We recently took a trip out for a spot of lunch to the Buchan Braes Hotel in the Buchan Braes complex at Boddam. Th is was somewhere where we had not dined at before, for lunch or dinner. We had heard some good things about the food, so decided to give it a try.
The interior is very tastefully decorated with a luxurious feel and dining can be in the lounge or in the open kitchen grill room. We opted to be seated in the more informal lounge and tried the 2 courses for £12. The menu we were told changes weekly and available Monday to Saturdays 12pm till 2pm. I did think that perhaps the two courses might have been a choice between starters or dessert, but it was starters and main course. It would have been nice to have had an option of either. There was plenty of choice for both starters and main courses and our waitress duly informed us of the specials for the day without us asking or looking for the specials board. I settled on the Sweet Chilli Beef Garlic Croute and my companion went for the Prawn Marie Rose with a 14 • www.YourTownCentre.co.uk • October 2012
boiled egg. We didn’t have to wait too long before getting the starters. The beef was steaming when it arrived and was nice and tender. The chilli sauce was not too spicy but gave a nice little after kick. The prawns were done nicely with a sauce that was neither too much or overpowering. Our choice of mains was breaded lemon sole fi llets and a gammon and pineapple salad. Portion sizes were substantial for a lunch time. The two lemon sole fi llets for me were just right, although I must say that I have had better chips - they were just not to my liking, too crispy and crunchy. The salad was a salad; nothing more, nothing less. Well apart from some more chips! It couldn’t be faulted though as it came with plenty of gammon, fresh pineapple and a good selection of salad vegetables. If you are looking for a quiet relaxed lunch in nice surroundings, why not try the Buchan Braes Hotel? Will we be back? Yes. Perhaps even for dinner. But as the menu changes every week, we just may make it a lunch date again. Buchan Braes Hotel, Boddam, Peterhead Tel: 01779 871471
