hello

Hello and welcome to Issue 3! I must start with thanking you all for your kind comments, feedback and interest in Your Town Centre Peterhead. We have had a great response to the magazine, an amazing number of visitors to the website and an increasing number of followers to our Facebook page. Can you believe how quickly August has gone? Olympics have come and gone; they were fantastic weren’t they? Schools are back. Celebrity Big Brother has started and so has X-Factor! September’s magazine quickly developed an arts and crafts theme. This came about as North East Open Studios starts on the 15th of September. We also feature three local crafters who create and sell fantastic items as well as two great local enterprises that encourages and aids the creativity and development of children. You never know, those children could be future crafters or artists. A few more events to note are the Peterhead Lifeboat Open Day on the 8th of September and Buchanhaven and Surrounding Area During the Wars on the 8th and 9th of September in the Buchanhaven Community Centre. Check out our What’s On pages for much more events throughout the month here in Peterhead and out & about! Enjoy your September and do let us know what you got up to!

Creation Station is passionate about Creativity! Led by local sisters Karen Mackie and Lynne Brown, Creation Station offers the opportunity for parents and carers to interact with their children through various themed sessions which are linked to the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. Sing-Along for 0 - 5 year olds, Sensory Sessions for ages 6 months - 8 years, Craft and Singing Sessions for ages 0 – 4 years and Themed Craft Sessions for ages 2 – 12 years is a taste of what is on offer. Karen and Lynne have three children each and started Creation Station as they both felt that there were limited opportunities in the area for children to use their imaginations whilst having fun. Lynne is a primary school teacher with 9 years experience whilst Karen previously worked in the oil and gas industry until her priorities changed when she became a mum. Creation Station offer affordable and, on occasion, free sessions. If you would like more information or to book a space for any of their sessions contact Karen and Lynne: creation.station@rocketmail.com Facebook.com/CreationStationPeterhead Call 07754 653 489

on and off for many years but if you ask her she will tell you 10 years. The Attic Studio on Queen Street will be open for 8 days during the week and will have on display many paintings, cards and prints as well as handknitting, jewellery and photographs. NEOS in 2011 saw Frances and Chris welcome over 150 visitors last year and hope to build on that success; they would particularly like to see more visitors from Peterhead this year. If you do fancy going along, you will find the Attic Studio at 106A Queen Street in Peterhead. Doors will be open from Saturday 15th September through to Sunday 23rd September, 10am till 5pm each day.

NEOS: Attic Studio The annual North East Open Studios (NEOS) event once again opens its doors during September. For those not familiar with NEOS, it is a collective of artists, makers and galleries who do open their doors to the public. Since it was founded in 2003, NEOS has grown into the largest open studios event in Scotland! There are not many open doors for NEOS 2012 in Peterhead but one artist who will be opening the doors of the Attic Studio to visitors is Frances Innes and her friend Chris McIntosh. Frances has been an artist

Just beware that it is not called the Attic Studio without reason. Oh and there is not a lift! But do not let that put you off and do go along and visit. Remember the more we all attend events such as this, the more likely we will see more of them in the future. You may have seen Frances’ paintings on display at Aberdeen Airport, Gallery Heinzel, Peacock Visual Arts, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Pitmedden House, Banff Castle, Aberdeen University, Larks Gallery, Arbuthnot Museum and Cruden Bay Gifts to name a few. Frances and Chris will also be exhibiting at the New Pitsligo Visual Arts exhibition in September.

Buchanhaven and Surrounding Areas through the Wars

Longside Airfield, the Norwegian Secret Service and other little known facts. A family event that is sure to stimulate discussion across generations with locals from the Buchanhaven who remember when the first bomb that dropped on the rocks at Gadle Braes, whilst hearing of heaving bombing that was endured in Aberdeen. Get on down to the Buchanhaven Community Centre on Saturday and Sunday the 8th and 9th of September, 10am till 4:30pm. You can also enjoy tea and homebakes to the sounds of the Glen Millar Orchestra. Entry is free and donations towards the Community Centre are gratefully received. The Buchanhaven Community Centre was formerly a school which has been revived as a community centre. Light Up Peterhead

Who loves seeing Christmas lights up in the town? Light Up Peterhead have organised a series of events over the next few months to help raise funds for new displays and to ensure that Peterhead continues to have Christmas Lights over the festive period. With recent funding having paid for an overhaul of power points, wire ropes, replacing lamps and lights with LED bulbs, the aim is now to raise funds to purchase new lights to increase the display and coverage of the town centre. The increased coverage will brighten up the town and hopefully pull more people in to the town to do their Christmas shopping. The series of events kick off with a Fashion Show in conjunction with M&Co at the Waterside Inn on Thursday the 6th of September at 7:30pm. A Craft Fayre has been organised in the Apex Church on Saturday the 15th of September at 11am. Looking further ahead there is a Variety Concert in the Community Centre Theatre on Friday the 5th of October, a popular event where people had to be turned away last time as tickets were quickly sold out. This is followed by a Community Centre Open Day on the Saturday. November the 22nd sees a GlowStick Parade that coincides with Late Night Shopping in the town. Finally the big Switch On will be on Saturday the 24th of November. The groups target is set at £15,000 and encourages the public to attend the events and donate what they can. Donations have been previously received from other community groups and they would like to call out to local businesses to perhaps donate a light if they can. If you are interested in more information or would like to joint the committee, please contact Revd. Dr. James McMillan of the Peterhead Congregational Church.

Peterhead Lifeboat Station

ANNUAL OPEN DAY

The Peterhead Lifeboat Station Annual Open Day this year is on Saturday 8 September 2012. Come on down between 12pm and 4pm and enjoy the day at Peterhead Lifeboat Station where Peterhead’s own Tamar class “Misses Robertson of Kintail” will be open to the public for viewing. The HM Coastguard, Fire Brigade and the Police Dive Team will also be in attendance.

Use Instagram? Why not join and follow us @YourTownCentre.

Events planned for the day include an in-shore D-class lifeboat display, a multimedia presentation from the stations Press Officer and a Kipper Barbecue. For those that like model boats, the Tarlair Model Boat Club will be using a boating pond on the day. There will be various stalls available on the day including an RNLI Charity Stall, bottle and raffle stalls where you will be able to buy some RNLI souvenirs. The Dolphin Cafe will also be open during the day for refreshments. With a great day in store and something for everyone, bring the family and your pennies and support your local lifeboat station! Peterhead has had a Lifeboat Station since 1865, and over the last 144 years has been instrumental in saving over 1000 souls who encountered difficulties at sea off the unpredictable North East coast of Scotland. You can get more information by visiting the Peterhead Lifeboat website at www.PeterheadLifeboat.co.uk
