Hands up who’s feeling undervalued? You probably are. If you want to look after your family, it pays to put yourself first for a change. Over half the mums in Britain don’t have life insurance. Yet the cost of paying someone to carry out the many tasks they perform every day could be more than £30,000 a year. Even those mums who go out to work often come home and do chores worth £28,664. So, how would your family cope financially if you were to die or become too ill to work?

Aberdeen Foyer’s Prince’s Trust Team 28’s Community Project We are members of Aberdeen Foyer’s Prince’s Trust Team 28, and for part of our 12 week team programme we have to carry out a 3 week project that will benefit our local community. We decided to renovate the caravan shop at the Lido. This is how we did it… Before we could start the project we, as a team, had to decide on how to raise the money we would need to complete it. We came up with the idea of having a quiz night, so on Thursday the 11th of October after asking local businesses for donations to use as prizes, we held our quiz night. We all worked together to write our own questions. This was a tough challenge, as we had to think up fun, yet challenging, questions. On the night, and although we were nervous, every member of our team read out their questions. The night was amazing and we managed to raise £250. On the Monday 15th of October we started our community project. We stripped out the shelves, the

10 • www.YourTownCentre.co.uk • December 2012 - January 2013

counters and the desk. Then we started sanding down the walls trying to get the bright orange paint off the wall. It was hard work, but by the end of the first day, we got most of it done. The second day was spent taking out all the wood from the shop and finishing off the sanding. Also, one of our team- David, slipped on his rear end and was covered in mud. It was really funny. Towards the end of the day our team leader, Bryan, gave us a bit of bad news-we needed to raise more money to help pay for the flooring. Some of the girls came up with the idea of a “Soup & Sweet”, so half of the team went off and prepared for that, whilst the other half stayed and cracked on with the project.

Wednesday saw us fi nish off cleaning the walls and then start the undercoating. We were feeling really good about the project because we all felt that we had done loads in a very short space of time. Tomorrow was our second fundraiser and we were all hoping that we managed to raise the extra money needed to complete the project. Thursday came and we were all at The Apex Church for our “Soup & Sweet”. Some the team had made macaroni, soup and some fi ne tasting puddings! The day was a magic success and we raised £220 in just a couple of hours. Having managed to organise 2 successful fundraisers in a short space of time gave us a massive boost of confidence and we all knew that we would be able to complete the project! With the extra money, we spent the next week painting, building and cleaning the caravan shop getting it looking nice and clean for the new owners, Peterhead Projects. On our last day, Friday 26th October, we had it all to do. We realised that our original plan for rebuilding the counter wasn’t going to work, so we had to think quick on our feet and come up with another plan. By the end of the day we’d not only managed to rebuild the counter, but it looked even better than we had imagined it would. Looking back, it’s hard to believe that we managed to complete the project in such a short space of time. We had our fall outs, our disagreements, but we managed to sort these out and come together to do something good for our local community. We wouldn’t have been able to do this project if it hadn’t been for the kind donations from local businesses, support from family & friends, guidance from our Team Leader, Assistant Team Leader & Student Wellbeing Worker. For more information about joining Prince’s Trust Team then contact the team leader, Bryan Mackay on 07930605887 or email bryanm@aberdeenfoyer.com

Choc Hazelnut truffles Saintly but sinful at the same time - it can be done! These little truffles are jam packed with goodness yet taste divine. The walnuts and flaxseeds provide omega 3 and protein while the dates are an excellent source of iron, calcium, copper and magnesium. The sustained energy release of the fructose will help you avoid the energy dip you get from refined sugars and keep you going while you tackle the last minute Christmas shopping. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and so delicious that everyone will want to try them!

New Year, New Start by Heather Stephen

Jack Frost may be nibbling at your toes, but that doesn’t mean you should put your health and fitness on ice. It may be tempting to turn your attentions to comfort food and snuggle up in front of the TV, but as little as 20 minutes a day of exercise is enough to benefit your waistline and your health. With these simple tips we aim to help make 2013 the year that you stick to those New Year resolutions and help you gain confidence and maybe even that million dollar body. Ok, so it’s the New Year. It’s time to turn your resolutions in to reality. Firstly don’t try to change everything at once, set realistic goals that are achievable and you will be much more likely to stick to them. You don’t need to suddenly start eating a diet of carrots and kale and you don’t need to be exercising every minute of the day. Cut out foods that are bad for you gradually, and increases your activity by joining an exercise class a couple of times a week. You’ll soon feel the difference and want to do more. There are many different classes out there to choose from. If you like to dance and have fun Zumba® will be right up your street, combining Latin and world music it’s a fun and effective workout system. Anyone can join the party! If you’re looking for all over body toning with combined cardio with resistance training why not give Kettlercise a try. It’s an effective fat burning class that gives rapid results for fat loss and toned bodies. Working in a group will keep you motivated and these are just some examples of group exercise. If you find classes are not your thing why not try a gym. The instructors will devise a program tailored to your needs and you’ll be dropping inches in no time. Keep active throughout the day to keep your body in fat burning mode. You could also take the stairs instead of the lift, cycle or walk instead of driving, do the housework with extra vigour...

This new year why not ditch the diets and discover a new healthy eating plan. The trouble with diets is they feel temporary. We follow them for a month or two lose a few pounds then go back to eating unhealthy. Unfortunately this leads to yo-yo effect and the pounds slowly creep back on. Instead try to eat clean. At the heart of any healthy diet should be plenty of fruit and vegetables. Every day eat at least two veg, two fruits and a large bowl of green leaves. Aim for as many varieties you can, especially of veg. Carbohydrate is our main source of energy and almost half our calories should come from unrefined carbohydrates such as wholemeal bread and pasta, brown rice and oats. Protein is needed by the body for growth and maintenance. Try to eat a portion of protein at every meal. Meat, eggs, fish, nuts and dairy are all good sources. Always eat breakfast, as those who do tend to be slimmer and eat healthier overall. As long as you eat the right things 80% of the time, it doesn’t matter if you indulge in the odd slice of cake or bar of chocolate now and then - just don’t go overboard. Do not give up; it’s normal to have “off ” days. And one bad day is not going to undo all the good work. Just pick where you left off.
