Support rolls in for McIntyre Thousands show love for Martin County firefighter facing life-threatening injuries By Patrick Bernadeau Staff writer PALM CITY – From the Palm City community to northern St. Lucie County, the Treasure Coast is rallying in support of a local firefighter on a long road to recovery. Responding to an early morning call on Dec. 27 for a house fire at 1151 S.W. Bluewater Way in Stuart, Jahwann McIntyre was one of three Martin County firefighters injured in the blaze, suffering burns on more than half of his body. Moments after the blaze, McIntyre, 22, was rescued and transported to the Jackson Memorial Burn Unit in Miami. McIntyre was then placed on a ventilator as the firefighter battled for his life in stable but critical condition. Through this tragic event, an
outpouring of care from the local community has flooded the McIntyres. A Facebook page has been setup by Jahwann’s family to update visitors on his progress. In more
than a week since its launch, the page has gotten more than 1,700 “likes.” Martin County Fire Rescue Lt. and Palm City resident John Davidson estimates more than 500 fellow firefighters, friends and family have made the trip down to Miami to show their love and support. Visitation hours have been halted temporally to allow Jahwann more time to rest amid the number of visitors and commotion. “Firefighers are kind of a close family,” Davidson said. “We’ve been getting calls from across the country and dozens of departments across

Chamber director a fixture in changing community
YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • PALM CITY & TESORO • JANUARY 11, 2013 • 3
By Shelley Koppel Staff writer PALM CITY – Palm City, which recently celebrated its 100th birthday, had its first Chamber of Commerce in 1927. The hurricane of 1928 virtually destroyed the area and it was not until 1978 that a new Chamber of Commerce received a charter. Carolyn Davi, executive director of the Palm City Chamber of Commerce, has seen many changes in the community since she first came here in 1987 from Westchester, New York. “I answered an ad in 1988 for part-time help,” she said. “They didn’t have an executive director. They’d just started the office and there were 70-plus members.” Today, the Palm City Chamber has more than 460 members, reflecting the growth of population and businesses. “We didn’t have a lot of commerce centers,” Davi said. “It was just small businesses. When I first moved here, the developments were still being built. When I first moved here, you had the Turnpike (to Palm City) but not I-95. It just stopped. The bridge was wooden and then two-lanes. In 1991, I-95 and the bridge opened. That opened up Palm City.” Supporting business is only a part of the Chamber’s mission. Building a sense of community is also important. Among the Chamber’s chief initiatives is the Adopt-A-Class program in Martin County schools. “It started 20 years ago,” Davi said. “It’s not just businesses. Parents and grandparents can also donate $200. They can designate a particular teacher. If a teacher gets more then two ‘adoptions,’ the next

DAVI from page 3 amount is donated among other teachers. The money is used for supplies like cartridges for printers and things the schools don’t give. In 20 years, we’ve collected over $1 million. It really helps.” Three years ago, the Chamber began sponsoring Fall Fest, a community event with activities for the family and participation by local bands and schools. In 2012, it drew 6,000 people to Justin Wilson Memorial Park. Davi would like to see Mapp Road finished so that Palm City can have a downtown area to hold such events. “We need a downtown area where we can hold things,” she said. “We’re very limited on space to be able to do anything. A downtown area would be a place to have community events.” The completion of Veterans Memorial Bridge, scheduled for 2013, is also on her “wish list.” “I’m looking forward to the bridge,” she said.

The association consists of various accomplished local artists and art teachers in the community. “We asked a number of our members if they would contribute their time and energy to teach and they graciously agreed,” Steinberg said. “We set up a fee for the workshops; many of our mem-
“They’ve done a fantastic job.” Not surprisingly, Davi is a big supporter of the community. “There’s an excellent community atmosphere,” she said. “The school system, above all, is why most people are moving here. It’s an easy commute if they’re working in Palm Beach, but we also need businesses to support us. The Sands Commerce Center has a lot of businesses that are fantastic and employ a lot of people. “I think it’s a fantastic community and I love living here. My grandchildren play soccer and I went to watch. I couldn’t get over the involvement of the parents. It makes a big difference.” The Palm City Chamber of Commerce is located at 880 S.W. “Most kids, when they get involved with art, it becomes something that consumes you because they have a voice that wants to be heard.” Nancy Steinberg, president bers signed up, learned a lot and all of the money that was collected went to the scholarship fund.” After the art teachers in the Martin County high schools submit the names of whom they believe are their best candidates, a committee from the organization takes a look at the student’s work and goes through an interview process to see who is worthy of the selection. Veterans Memorial Bridge update
ART from page 4
Bridge is at an estimated 70 percent completion By Patrick Bernadeau Staff writer Photo courtesy of Florida Department of Transportation Crews will be installing traffic signal mast arms, forming of parapet walls to serve as wall barriers and the bridge’s foundation being set with the completion of production piles on the east approach. the targeted completion date has been moved back a couple of weeks to late July due to weather concerns. Transitioning from winter to spring and high winds make for dangerous and unsafe conditions. “Our progress is affected by wind more than anything else at this point,” project administrator George Denti said. “We are setting big, pre-cast components with big cranes, but anytime the wind blows over 15 mph, it’s just not safe to do.” Despite the added time, Denti doesn’t expect any major closures or issues in Palm City as the project moves from west to east. “I don’t expect any big changes or

surprises on the (Palm City) side,” Denti said. “We’ll be out there with a periodic lane closure occasionally, but nothing of any duration or significance.” The bridge is financed by the Federal Highway Administration and the Florida Department of Transportation. Martin County will own, operate and maintain the bridge. The project is estimated to cost $65 million, with overruns running less than 1 percent. PALM CITY – As we enter the new year, the Veterans Memorial Bridge will see several additions made in the month of January. Crews will be installing traffic signal mast arms, forming of parapet walls to serve as wall barriers and the bridge’s foundation being set with the completion of production piles on the east approach. With the foundation set, the deck pouring process gets under way as the crew begins to install the concrete riding surface. The bridge’s riding surface is 120 cubic ft. wide and 3100 cubic ft. long. The project is slated to be completed in the summer, but
is thrilled with the opportunity to expand the horizons of these passionate students. “Most kids, when they get involved with art, it becomes something that consumes you because they have a voice that wants to be heard,” Steinberg said. “Whether you are writing, painting or making films, the arts are about a need to express yourself.” “These kids are just incredibly talented. They aren’t just producing pretty images, but things with really creative and meaningful messages and styles.” The first workshop will be on Jan. 14 at the Palm City Recreation Center. The workshop is entitled “Watercolor with Sandy Odell.”

The fundraiser will take place on Jan. 30 at Big Apple Pizza and Pasta on 2311 S. 35th St. in Fort Pierce. The road to recovery remains to be a long one, but McIntyre’s condition has steadily improved in the days since the fire. Three of the six arrests were made by the Martin County Sheriff’s deputies. In anticipation of the activity, the Sheriff’s Office provided enhanced law enforcement on the streets on New Year’s Eve. In addition to Road Patrol deputies, six DUI units were on duty that night, Martin County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Rhonda Irons said. A typical DUI unit during an evening shift consists of three or four deputies, but this holiday requires a larger police presence on the roads. While drunk driving becomes a focus every year on Dec. 31, staggering statistics suggest that it’s a year-long problem. According to Florida DMV records, 55,722 DUI tickets were issued in Florida in 2011, 33,625 of those arrests resulting in convictions. The Sheriff’s Office recognizes the problem. Calling all brides: Attend Weddings 411 and experience a live mock wedding For Your Voice News & Views MARTIN COUNTY -- All local brides are invited to attend a live mock wedding where they will be a guest enjoying all the ceremonies and traditions, fabulous food and beverages. On Jan. 13, Eventful Moments bridal consultants will host Weddings 411, a “how-to” seminar and live mock wedding at Indian RiverSide Park in Jensen Beach from 1-5 p.m. Entrance is only $5 per guest. Weddings 411 was developed by Cindy Morley, owner of Eventful Moments and veteran bridal consultant with more than 25 years of wedding planning experience on the Treasure Coast. “Instead of the typical bridal show that everyone is used to, I am hosting a seminar with all types of bridal professionals, speaking directly to the brides and answering their questions. Not only will the bride see, taste, and touch all that these vendors have to offer, but they will have a chance to get to know them, ask questions and get professional answers from experts,” Morley said. Eventful Moments has hosted many Weddings 411 seminars in the past but this time, the workshop will include a live wedding ceremony and reception with entertainment, current bridal fashions, elegant decorations and catered food and beverage.
Brides will participate as guests and have a chance to ‘borrow’ any ideas they like. Weddings 411 and the live mock wedding will begin at 1 p.m. with a real ceremony on the dock. Guests will then head upstairs to the banquet room for a cocktail hour and reception during which they will mingle with wedding vendors, participate in an “ask the experts” session, taste menus and cakes and enjoy a chocolate fountain, photo booth, video, music and much more. Join Cindy Morley of Eventful Moments and more than 20 wedding professionals for Weddings 411 on Sunday, Jan. 13 and let the experts help you plan your big day, your way! For more information or to pre-register, contact Cindy at (772) 349-1989.

The club should go back on a parallel line to your feet with the club face wide open – most golfers don’t open the face enough. Picture the ball as a fried egg trying to hit the white part around the yolk, 2-3 inches behind the ball.

This is a full swing back and thru – no short swings. Slap the sand, don’t pick it. Good Luck

You really want to try to pick the ball out of the sand.
Basically you’re trying to punch the ball – The more your swing your body your more apt to hit the ball fat – So tighten the swing up. Good Luck

STUART – There are still traces of his native Hungary in pianist Peter Pertis’ voice. Pertis, who left Hungary in search of artistic freedom in the West, now calls Port St. Lucie home for part of the year. In the summer, he and his wife, Aggie, return to Europe. He will perform at the Lyric Theatre on Jan. 19 and he spoke recently about his extraordinary life and about how much he enjoys playing for the hometown crowd. Pertis grew up in post-World War II Hungary. It was a chal-
lenging time. “I was a child then,” he said. I didn’t realize that it was difficult. I lived my life and I had good teachers and friends. We had nothing fancy. We were a musical family. My mother’s brother was a famous violinist in Hungary. I began learning the violin when I was 5. At 8 or 9, I began learning the piano and when I was 12, I decided to go on with the piano.” Pertis became a pianist of note, and the Communist government allowed him to leave the country to tour and represent the country

as young artist. In 1978, he defected. “Everything was dictated and it was not a free society,” he said. “I did not feel good about it.” The musician spent time in Japan, where he taught as a visiting professor, and came to the United States, where he taught at the Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Conn. He also continued performing. The Pertis family returned to Europe and lived in Budapest, a place that now welcomed the pianist home. Still, they missed the States and decided to divide their time between the two continents. They wished to avoid the winters they remembered in Connecticut, so when a friend suggested Port St. Lucie, they settled in. They have lived there for more than a year. “We’re here six or seven months and go back to Europe,” he said. “I think we are going to be spending more and more time here.” For the Lyric concert, Pertis has chosen works by some of his favorite composers. The program opens with a Beethoven Sonata, known popularly as “The Tempest.” He will then perform a Cho-

pin Ballade and a Scherzo. After the intermission, he will play two pieces by Liszt: “Vallee d’Obermann” and “Mephisto Waltz.” “The ‘Mephisto Waltz’ is a famous piece and one of the most demanding,” Pertis said. “I love the pieces and the audiences like it. Most of my repertoire is romantic pieces. They are the kind of thing I like to do and I really like my audience enjoying the music. “It’s a big challenge to play big romantic pieces. You have to give yourself into it. I have never played anything which I don’t like. I try to make a program I like and the audience likes.” Pertis said that he enjoys playing at the Lyric. “The audiences are very responsive. I’m very glad about their reactions. They come up to me after the concerts and I get letters (from them.) I am very happy about the Lyric concert and happy they invited me. I really hope I have a full house.” Peter Pertis performs at the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Blvd, Stuart, on Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $45.
