St. Lucie primary will decide county elections Patti McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker has been at the job since 1980. This year’s primary, she said, will be the biggest August vote in her career. It’ll pretty much settle county elections. “That’s because the Republican Party did not field as many candidates as they normally do in a general election year,” she said. That means six primaries will be universal. Although all the candidates in five of the six races are Democrats, and both are Republicans in one, all
voters will cast ballots in those races. The only way any of those will go to runoffs in the general election is in the highly improbable event there are ties. Those universal primaries are Sheriff, Property Appraiser, Supervisor of Elections, Public Defender Judicial Circuit 19 and Board of County Commissioner districts 1 and 5. Fellow Democrat Richard Williams Jr. is challenging incumbent Sheriff Ken Mascara to become St. Lucie’s top cop. Republican Property Appraiser Ken Pruitt dropped his reelec-

TRADITION — And the conversation goes like this: Yes, 150 miles. Yes, on bicycles. Yes, all in one day. No, their butts will be fine. Get ready to roll, the Port St. Lucie 150 is making its debut in Tradition on Saturday, Oct. 8. “It’s a cycling, running and walking fundraising event to raise money for the missions team at
(First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie),” race director Mark Hamel said. Cyclists will head out at 7 a.m. and do up to 10 loops on Community Boulevard and Tradition and Village parkways — a 15-mile loop. Riders can go 15 to the full 150 miles to receive finisher medals. Most will do miles in between those two. Runners and walkers will do 5 and 10K routes starting at 7:30

Gold Star family remembered with home renovation Pat McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PORT ST. LUCIE — Jordan Schumann grew up in a quaint Port St. Lucie home. He attended St. Lucie West Centennial High School and joined the Army after graduating in 2006. He got married and was expecting his first child. Two comrades and he were killed by a roadside bomb on July 7, 2011, in Paktia province, Afghanistan, while serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Schumann received the Purple Heart posthumously. Fitting then that his parents, Clay and Linda Schumann, saw their completely renovated home on Purple Heart Day, Aug. 7. It’s the home Jordan grew up in. It’d fallen into some disrepair in recent years. The couple didn’t just see the

renovated home that Sunday afternoon — they saw it for the first time accompanied by dozens of well-wishers cheering, the St. Lucie County Fire District’s Honor Guard playing “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes and drums, and a mammoth American flag flying from the ladder of a fire truck. The couple saw it with Port St. Lucie’s vice mayor and a candidate of the 18th Congressional District, Purple Heart recipient Brian Mast, on hand. “I don’t know where to begin to say something,” Clay told those gathered. He visibly gathered himself and found a place to begin — by sharing something the family believes about life. “We found out a long time ago it’s not things, it’s people,” Clay said. “Invest in people.” To that he added—

IRSC named Leader College by Achieving the Dream FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Achieving the Dream (ATD) has designated Indian River State College as a “Leader College,” a national honor awarded to institutions in the ATD National Network who have shown exceptional student
success. “Leader College status represents a sustained, successful effort to build a student-centered culture,” said Dr. Karen A. Stout, president and CEO of Achieving the Dream, a national nonprofit dedicated to helping more community college students, particularly low-income students

and students of color stay in school and earn a college certificate or degree. “Colleges that stay focused on the hard work of transformation deserve to be recognized when they make measurable progress.” IRSC scrutinized student data, teaching methods and policies to enhance retention and graduation rates with the resulting accomplishments leading to the ATD Leader College designation. These include increased completion rates in Intermediate Algebra from 58 percent in fall 2012 to 65.9 percent in fall 2015. The overall completion rate for students was increased by 13 percent in spring 2015, with a 2-percent decrease in course withdrawal rates, and 40 percent decrease in incompletes. The new year-round registration schedule supported program retention, allowing students and advisors to map their entire pathway, identify challenges and plan solutions. Other successful priorities include live and online New Student Orientation and a student success course providing training in financial literacy, time management, goal setting, and lifelong learning. “IRSC is honored to be recognized nationally for closing achievement gaps and increasing success for every student,” said Dr. Edwin R. Massey, IRSC President. “Helping students
“IRSC is honored to be recognized nationally for closing achievement gaps and increasing success for every student.” Dr. Edwin Massey IRSC President reach their educational goals contributes significantly to their individual career prospects, and the benefits extend further to support the economic strength of our community and nation.” Leader Colleges are eligible to compete for all grant-funded learning initiatives offered by ATD and are encouraged to provide leadership and support to other colleges in the ATD network, disseminate lessons learned, support state and national efforts to advance the student success agenda, and continue to improve student outcomes. Achieving the Dream grants Leader College designation for three-year cycles. After three years, institutions must undergo a recertification process to maintain Leader College status. This year, Achieving the Dream designated four institutions as Leader Colleges for the first time and recertified 17 Leader Colleges.

Same ol’ water woes Dear Editor: I was a property owner living in Martin County from 1985 to 2010, and with some of those years I have written letters to the Editor, spoken to the Martin County commissioners about the condition of the water in the St. Lucie, & Indian Rivers because of the St. Lucie Locks releasing water from Lake Okeechobee. That was more than 30 years ago, and in all these years, nothing has changed, the water in these Rivers are worse than ever. The problem with releasing all that water is the fear that the
Herbert Hoover earthen Dike could break if there is to much water behind it, if it did break the water would drown many people living below it. The water released is polluted before it gets into the St. Lucie Locks, you can see it, so the problem is created in the water before any Martin septic tanks can affect it, but people point their fingers at it as the main cause.
That water has the nutrients from lawns, farms, and other places as far north as Orlando, (like the Kissimmee River) i.e. up stream from the locks that flow into Lake Okeechobee, & those pollutants already in the water and will settle to the bottom. They could be releasing cleaner water from the top of the St. Lucie locks, but several years ago it was reported that wa-
ter released is from the bottom, which is the worst of the polluted water from Lake Okeechobee. Also reported, “We watched the algae come down the locks into the St. Lucie River.” Leaders lost opportunity after opportunity to buy sugar land south of Lake Okeechobee to hold and clean water before it gets into the Everglades, what will they do now, buy the land, or wait for the Hover dike to bust? Sincerely, Joe Florio St. Lucie West
PSL resident shares candidate support Dear Editor: In the City Council District 2 election I am voting for Linda Gausten because her background in finance and community organization impressed me. It also is impressive that she is willing to make this a full-time job. I looked at the other candidates running against her, and these are our other choices: John Carvelli — An elementary school principal in Palm Beach County. Carvelli will not give up his day job. He expects to be a council member on a part-time basis. City problems are quite different from running an elementary school or being on a school board. He certainly will not be able to de-
vote the kind of time necessary to be an effective city council member while being a full-time school employee. Jimmy Pucci — A firefighter — this is an admirable job, and I certainly would want him to be there if my house was on fire, but I see no evidence that he has the ability to analyze a balance sheet. Also, he is a member of a union, and as such would have to recuse himself during city union negotiations, especially since his campaign is being financed by Tallahassee Firefighter Union PAC money. He, again, will not give up his full-time day job to work on the city council. Chancellor Howell — A FedEx personnel manager who apparently has no training to analyze the
city’s $500-million-dollar expense budget, and yet he talks about taking the city in a new direction, but cannot define that direction. Robert Joseph — a small-business owner who says he wants to help children. His answers to the various questions asked by TC Palm lead me to believe that he does not have the ability to understand the intricacies of the city’s budget. Armando Rodriguez — A retired New York City police officer who has been active in the Torino community. He has never analyzed city-sized finance, nor does he have the training to do so, and would be lost during City budget meetings. When we have so many people
running for the City Council who do not have the ability to understand the impact of policy decisions and are devoid of the skills to analyze the finances put before them, they will tend to rely on “staff” for all the answers. Taxpayers need qualified candidates who will look beyond staff, and see the needles in the haystack. I believe that Linda Gausten, with three decades of executive financial experience, decades of civic involvement, and a strong environmental record, is that person. She has my vote. Thank you, Ann Diamondstone Port St. Lucie

Understanding the St. Lucie County Fire District Assessment Referendum
Property Tax Revenues and Calls for Assistance
On August 30, 2016 all St. Lucie County registered voters will have the opportunity to vote on an annual assessment of up to $50 per residence and other modest fees for commercial property and vacant land. The assessment will fund the District’s fire protection services, equipment, facilities and programs.

Why is the Fire District seeking this assessment? Currently, the District’s fire rescue services are primarily paid for through an ad valorem property tax capped at 3 mils. This funding was adequate until additional Homestead Exemptions and the Great Recession combined to dramatically decrease taxable values. When values sharply decreased, so did the funds available to pay for services. Fire District revenues fell 36% -- but calls for assistance continued to rise by an average of 4.8% each year!

What does this mean to me? As of March 2014, the owners of 10,891 properties paid nothing for fire protection because their assessed home value was less than the value of their tax exemptions; 42% of all properties in the county contributed less than $75 for the Fire District’s services. If the referendum passes, starting next year all property owners (residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and vacant land) in St. Lucie County, including those in the cities, will pay an assessment for the Fire District when they pay their property tax bill. Those rates can be found on the District’s website. For the homeowner, the assessment for each residence will be no more than $50 – less than 14 cents a day. Because this fee is not linked to the value of a home, all homeowners will share fairly and equally in this assessment and the fire protection services it supports.
What will the money be used for?
FIRE VEHICLE NEEDS
By law, the funds may only be used for fire protection services, facilities/equipment and programs. In order to maintain high levels of service with reduced revenue during the economic downturn, one of the cost-saving measures the District took was to temporarily put off purchasing replacement vehicles or making necessary capital improvements to fire stations. Maintaining a reliable fleet of vehicles is essential to providing reliable fire protection services. Over the next four years, the District must replace 27 trucks that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Another 15 rescue trucks will also be needed, but these will be purchased using other funding sources.

What else has the District done to save money? Having a single Fire District that serves the entire county allows our District to operate at a lower cost than neighboring fire departments. For instance, last year the per-resident cost for fire rescue services was about 15% lower in St. Lucie County than in neighboring counties – and the St. Lucie County Fire District handled about 2,500 more calls than Martin and Indian River counties combined. The starting pay of our firefighters is $32,000 a year versus $43,118 in Martin and $39,838 in Indian River. Between 2009-2014, our employees agreed to first postpone and then cut in half scheduled pay and cost of living increases and agreed to increase their own contributions by 2% of base pay to the pension plan, reducing taxpayer costs. The District also reduced firefighter staffing from a high of 404 in 2008 to a low of 359 in 2014.
Ultimately, if funding for the Fire District fails to cover costs, the District would have no choice but to decrease its level of service to the county’s residents, through staffing cuts and continued deferral of critical equipment purchases. In addition to jeopardizing the safety of our residents, the lack of equipment and potentially longer response times will likely negatively impact our county’s insurance rating - which can lead to an increase in homeowner and commercial fire insurance premiums, or even result in the inability to obtain fire insurance on some properties.

ST. LUCIE WEST — The South Florida Surf’s inaugural year kicked it. “We finished in the top 16 in the country out of 72 teams,” Eric Arbuzow, general manager, said. The Surf — a Premier Development League of the United Soccer League — was eliminated in post-season playoffs, but has quite a trophy. “We had seven home games throughout the season, and our average attendance was 700, which we’re very happy with,” Arbuzow said The league average is 450 attendees for games. The first exhibition game — against Miami United — in April drew more than 1,800 to the team’s home field, the South County Regional Sports complex, 560 S.W. University Blvd., St. Lucie West.

The regular season kicked off on May 7 with a game against The Villages SC. The regular season continued until July. The team picked up about 20 sponsors. “That’s a very big thing,” Arbuzow said. “First year teams struggle with sponsorships.” One sponsor, Colorado Pawn & Jewelry, paid for the Surf to host a youth soccer camp the first week of August. That was at McChesney Park, 1585 S.W. Cashmere Blvd., St. Lucie West. Thirty youths attended. Arbuzow said the team had numerous requests for players to attend events during the season, but that was difficult to accommodate. Besides the heavy season with a number of away games, the team’s practice field was in West Palm Beach. “We’re looking to move north,” Arbuzow said. Lucas Coutinho won’t be back
with the team next year. Arbuzow said the midfielder is making a move from semi-pro to pro next year. That’s OK with the Surf. “Our goal is to put players into the pros,” he said. The Surf also aims to move from being an expansion to a pro team within two to four seasons. The next season will start with an exhibition game in April. Season passes for 2017 will be half price until then. The Surf is planning to hold clinics for young players before next season, probably starting around December In addition to some community pride, the Surf is adding about $3 million in economic activity to Port St. Lucie. Much of it churns in St. Lucie West and Tradition, as soccer fans head out for meals and shopping before and after games. “Moving into next season, we look to have a bigger impact on the community,” Arbuzow said. More about the Surf is at www. southfloridasurfsc.com.

KID CARE from page A8 children from birth through age 18, even if one or both parents are working. “For many years, I have worked with vulnerable families spanning the Treasure Coast and Lake Okeechobee area, and the single most important concern for families beyond their basic needs is access to affordable health care coverage for their children,” said Leah Suarez, President of Our Village Okeechobee. “Florida KidCare has helped thousands of our local children obtain medical care for something as simple as a cold to treatments that are life-saving. It truly is one less worry for moms, dads and grandmas like me to know that our children are covered in the event they need health care.” Florida KidCare’s eligibility is based on household size and income. Some families pay a premium as low as $15 or $20 a month, and some families pay nothing at all. Benefits covered by Florida KidCare include doctor visits, prescriptions, check-ups, vision, shots, hearing, hospitalization, mental health, emergencies, dental and more. Enrollment for Florida KidCare is open year-round. “As a parent of an almost 4-yearold rough and tough little guy, I know the true value of health

insurance,” said Sherry Siegfried, Parent, Navigator/Outreach Specialist for the Treasure Coast Food Bank, and current Florida KidCare Treasure Coast Coalition Chair. “Recently, my son decided that — instead of taking a nap at daycare — he and mommy need to take a trip to the ER when he fell and split his chin open. While frazzled by the incident, I had no worries about having to do so because he is covered by Florida KidCare, health insurance that is designed for children.” Community leaders and child advocates Sean Boyle of Children’s Services Council, Leah Suarez of Our Village Okeechobee, and Joe Davis of Florida Healthy Kids discussed the elimination of the five-year waiting period which has now made Florida KidCare available to more than 17,000 uninsured children. Florida is still ranked 49th out of 50 states in the number of uninsured kids. Enrollment and renewal of coverage should be an integral part of a family’s back-toschool routine because children and teens who have health coverage are better prepared to learn and are less likely to miss school from being sick. For more information about Florida KidCare, to enroll, or to find the closest enrollment assistance site, visit www.floridakidcare.org.

tion bid, leaving Democrats Michelle Franklin and Adam Locke vying for the job. Democrat Walker is facing challenger Sheritta Johnson in a universal primary race to keep her position as Supervisor of Elections. The St. Lucie County Commission District 1 race has Democrats Sal D. Anicito, Robin “Doug” Bynoe and James Monds challenging incumbent Chris Dzadovsky. Commissioner Kim Johnson, too, is in a forced universal primary to keep his seat, District 5. He’s against fellow Democrats Alexander Tommie and Cathy Townsend. Those races could end in runoffs if none get more than 50 percent of the overall vote. The top two vote-getters will square off in the general election in that case. Thomas F. Burns is challenging incumbent Diamond R. Litty for Public Defender Judicial Circuit 19. Both are Republicans in that universal primary. Non-partisan races with only two candidates will, almost certainly, be decided in the primary, too. Both St. Lucie County School Board races have only two candidates. Kacey Cooper Armstrong is challenging incumbent Carol A. Hilson for District 2. Jennifer Richardson is taking on incumbent Kathryn Hensley in District 4. Another non-partisan race that’ll be decided in the primary is Circuit Judge, 19th Judicial Circuit Group 1. Beth Elaine
Allen and James W. “Jim” McCann are the only candidates, so likely there’ll be no runoff in the general election. McCann is the incumbent. Additionally, Ed Alonzo is challenging appointed incumbent Nirlaine T. Smartt for County Judge Group 3. Gov. Rick Scott appointed Smartt last year. Registered Democrats will all but decide the Clerk of Court race in the primary. “There’s a write in candidate in that race,” Walker said. That’s Dinah Walker. The Democrats are Martha Hornsby and Joseph E. Smith, the incumbent. Write-in candidates almost never win county elections. In the County Commission District 3 race, Linda Bartz and Patrick Champion are looking to win the seat now held by Paula Lewis. There’s a Republican in that race: Howard Fein. Generally Democrats have advantages in general elections. There are 76,500 registered Democrats in St. Lucie compared to 60,000 Republicans. There are about 51,000 voters without party affiliation or who are members of minor parties. The only Republican now on the county commission is Tod Mowery. Voters will decide referendums in the primary, too. “There are two, one (state) constitutional amendment, and the other is a local referendum,” Walker said.

Photo courtesy of Mark Hamel Mark Hamel is the race director of the upcoming PSL 150 in Tradition. Cyclists will ride 15 to 150 miles in Tradition on Saturday, Oct. 8, on a 15-mile circuit. Additionally, there’ll be a 5 and 10K run. This is the first year the event will be in Tradition.

a.m. The runs will be timed and there’ll be overall and age-group awards for runners, along with finisher medals. There’ll be children’s runs starting at 10:15 a.m. While new to Tradition, the PSL 150 has been around for four years. It was an annual church event started by the former pastor, Wayne Williams. He was turning 60 and thought to celebrate by riding his bike 150 miles. While he was at it, Williams figured to invite others in the church to join him and get mileage pledges to support missionary work in Cuba and Haiti. The church group rode elsewhere in Port St. Lucie. Williams rode 150 miles again in 2013 and 2014. About a dozen from the congregation joined him each year, but, Hamel said, most went fewer than 150 miles. Williams went to shepherd another church, but folks in the Port St. Lucie congregation kept the event going last year. “The third year I did it with (Williams) and there were four of us who set out for the 150 miles,” Hamel said. He didn’t make it the entire way that year. Hamel dropped off at 135 miles. “Last year I did it by myself, the 150 miles,” Hamel said. In cycling, the century — 100 miles — is held akin to the marathon in running. A 150-mile ride takes about the same energy — calories — as running a 50-mile ultramarathon. Hamel took over as director this year, and decided to expand the event to the public with all the trimmings of traditional organized cycling rides and runs, such as
T-shirts. Homewood Suites by Hilton, 10301 S.W. Innovation Way, was one of the first event sponsors. The rides and runs will start there. “We wanted to move it to Tradition, so it’d be safer than the route last year,” Hamel said. Roads in Tradition are popular with cyclists for a few reasons. Many have bike lanes. Traffic is relatively light, and drivers are generally courteous. In addition to numerous solo road cyclists, several regular group rides head through Tradition. Hamel is an aspiring ironman triathlete. “I actually started running about eight years ago,” he said. “Trying to get in shape and lose weight.” He was about 200 pounds. He’s now 150. Hamel kind of accidently got into cycling. When the economy was crashing in 2008, it hit him hard. He got a specialized hybrid bike to commute to work. Since he was running and cycling— “I decided to throw in some swimming,” Hamel said. He’s graduated to riding a Swiss bicycle, a BMC TM01, but he’s not riding that to work. “It’s a time trial bike,” Hamel said. Hamel hopes to get about 100 riders, runners and walkers to the event. “This is a very big fundraising event for our missions’ team,” he said. “I thought that it was an important thing for me to do and I have the abilities.” In addition to Homewood Suites by Hilton, Publix, Wakim’s Gourmet Foods, Fleet Feet Sports, Stuart, More Than a Geek and Treasure Coast Cycle Werks are sponsors. “You can’t out give a God who loves you so much.” Believe With Me, a Palm Beach County not-for-profit founded by David and Lyette Reback, organized the renovation, in addition to getting the family a new car, with volunteers and donations. The family had a 1994 Corolla. Now they have a 2013 Altima. The Schumanns saw the car for the first time at the house unveiling. Port St. Lucie’s Vice Mayor, Linda Bartz, said she was amazed at the outpouring of support for the renovation project. “The community has come out in droves,” she said in a telephone interview before the unveiling. “It’s been an incredible coming out of the community.” Bartz said she found out about the project when Believe With Me discovered that it was supposed to get permits for some of the then in progress renovations. The organization called Bartz looking for help. “I called our building department,” Bartz said. What happened next, Bartz said, made her proud of the Port St. Lucie city staff. “Many staff (members) donated money to pay for (the permits),” she said. “They fast-tracked the

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Indian River State College is one of the distinguished organizations across the United States selected to participate in the second season of the Air Force Association’s (AFA) CyberCamp Program this summer. More than 30 students attended IRSC’s AFA CyberCamp last week to learn cyber safety, cyber ethics, and critical network security skills and tools. The camp was instructed by Steve Nicholson, Cybersecurity Manager for IRSC’s Advanced Technology Department. The AFA CyberCamp culminated in an exciting team-based competition that put campers in the role of IT administrators tasked with finding and addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in simulated network environments. The local AFA CyberCamp competition closely mimicked AFA’s annual
CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, which enters its 9th season in October. In addition to hosting one of the first AFA CyberCamps, IRSC will mentor local middle- and highschool teams in the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition this fall. The CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Education Program was created by the Air Force Association in 2009 to attract students to cyber security and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future. In addition to the annual National Youth Cyber Defense Competition and the new AFA CyberCamp program, CyberPatriot has launched an Elementary School Cyber Education Initiative designed to introduce young students to online safety. LINDA GAUSTEN MAKES THE CASE FOR A SOUND FINANCIAL POLICY
All cities everywhere run on the same fundamentals. The question is - Why are some places better to live in than others? Why are the roads in one city well maintained and others falling apart? Why is there more crime in some and less in others? And the list goes on... The reason is simple – experience in Linda Gausten handling money. Knowledgeable and experienced management makes the difference. When governments make mistakes, it is too easy for them to put their hand in the taxpayers’ pockets for more and more taxes to pay for those mistakes, as in last year’s 18% tax increase. The way a city spends its money is decided by the City Council. The people we elect must have good judgment and the right skills necessary to do the job. Every single thing we value about Port St Lucie has a price tag attached… emergency services, our parks, our drinking water, sewers, the roads. The trick is to have all those things and not put an undue burden on our taxpayers. Raising taxes should be the very last resort when all other options have been thoroughly explored. Our city is $888 million in debt, and 24% of that debt is what some refer to as “toxic” debt - I have a different word for it – “unnecessary” debt, because the people who created this debt, although well intentioned, did not have the training and skills to ask the right questions before committing our taxpayers’ hard earned money to what basically was speculation. In last years’ budget we spent $8.8 million interest on avoidable debt, and in this year’s budget, for this line item, it will be
over $10 million. My executive experience in the financial industry gives me the knowledge and the confidence to make the right decisions. The city needs to guard our natural resources better, protecting our health and our economy, strengthen our communities so we can all work together, and nurture our youth to secure our future. I have made a successful career out of stopping investors and institutions, from making foolish financial mistakes. I’ve sat on, or advised, the Boards of Directors in both the private and public sector that dealt with financial management issues on how best to increase available revenue while paying down debt many times larger than those of the city’s current budget. I have the skills to help heal the financial damage done to our city and help our council avoid making the same ill-advised financial decisions which were made in the past. It’s not going to happen overnight, but it will happen. My skills and experience are what this city needs to put our financial house in order without relying on the taxpayers to bail us out, yet again. We can have the city we want to have and the financial health to pay for it. All we need do to secure that is elect smart city management with the skills to make the right choices. I am asking for your support and your vote to help make that happen. I have a track record worth reading about.
For more information about me, my bio, my positions, etc. Please visit my website: http://lindagausten.com Linda Gausten is running for the Port St. Lucie City Council in District Two. The entire city, including registered Independents, can vote for her in the August primary.

The statewide initiative on the primary ballot this year would extend some tax benefits to solar and renewable energy products if voters pass it. “I want to emphasize the importance of this primary,” Walker said. “If you want to have any say in local elections, this is the election. If you wait to the general election, you’ll miss out.” Early voting will be Aug. 20 to 27. There are two sites in Port St. Lucie to vote early. One is the Port St. Lucie Community Center, 2195 S.E. Airoso Blvd.

Murphy, lawmakers write to EPA over toxic chemicals FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy (District 18) joined U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) and several other members of Florida’s congressional delegation in writing to the head of the Environmental Protection Agency to raise their serious concerns with the state’s proposal to allow increased levels of toxic chemicals in Florida’s waters. In addition to Murphy and Nelson, signers of the letter include U.S. Reps. Ted Deutch (FL-21), Lois Frankel (FL-22), Gwen Graham (FL-02), Alan Grayson (FL-09), Alcee L. Hastings (FL20), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23), and Frederica Wilson (FL-24). Murphy also called on state officials to reject this proposal before its approval yesterday by Florida’s Environmental Regulation Commission (ERC) by a vote of 3-2, making the following statement: “Our waterways are already in
crisis with toxic algae blooms threatening our precious ecosystems, public health, and economy. Weakening our clean water standards to allow Rep. Patrick Murphy increased chemical levels will only exacerbate the situation. “Furthermore, to move forward with such a controversial proposal when there are vacancies on the ERC is a dereliction of the state’s duty to make sure all stakeholders and Floridians’ voices are heard. “The state must reject this harmful proposal and instead, put the health and well-being of the people of Florida first by working to strengthen water quality and address the ongoing crisis in our waterways.”

There’s a lot to love about Port St. Lucie, and Places & Faces, a joint production between the St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce and the City of Port St. Lucie, is a production meant to showcase some of our most lovable places and people. July 30, we invited PSL families out for an evening at one of our most iconic locations — Tradition Field. Taping, which was open to the public, started at 5:30 p.m., which gave us some time to talk to residents, review some of the history of St. Lucie West and Tradition Field, interview Paul Taglieri of the Mets, and throw out the first pitch before our Mets took the field against the Lakeland Flying Tigers at 6:30. After enjoying fried shrimp and watching our Mets gain another victory, we ended the night with fireworks. Tradition Field and our St. Lucie Mets provide family-friendly entertainment at a price that is hard to beat. For our last episode of Places & Faces, we were at the only Club Med in the United States. For

TRADITION — It has been a very hot summer and most of us are busy thinking of ways to beat the heat. If you can’t beat it, you can enjoy it. There are events going on at Tradition and it’s always worth a trip to visit the shops and restaurants. On the first and third Friday of the month, food trucks will come in from 5-9 p.m. There will be DJ and children’s activities, as well. Tunes at Tradition will take place on Aug, 31, with a band to be announced. They will play in the Square from 6-9 p.m. and the concert is free. Bring your coolers and lawn chairs and eat at any of the Tradition restaurants before or after the show. Food trucks will also be available. On Oct. 22, when it cools down a bit and seasonal residents start to return, the Treasure Coast Antique Car Show will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The Treasure Coast Vintage Car Club is calling the event, “The Cars of our Lives.” Feel free to relive some memories and see some cars that are older than all of us. There is free parking and admission. November 9 brings the 9th Annual Treasure Coast Beer Fest. There will be craft beers and more than 300 craft beer sam-

fter a leaf appeared next to my grandmother’s name on Ancestry.com, I made contact with a cousin who emigrated from Poland in 1993. She had information about my grandmother’s hometown, Nawsie, since her family still lived nearby. I was always curious to see what my 19-year-old grandmother left behind when she traveled alone to join her two sisters in Bayonne, New Jersey, in 1912.

TRADITION from page B1 plings. The event runs from 1-5 p.m. in Tradition Square and proceeds benefit the Treasure Coast Food Bank. There is free entrance and parking for those wishing to walk around, listen to music and purchase food. There is a charge of $35 at the door and $30 in advance to purchase bracelets for the wine tasting. Tickets can be purchased at Vine & Barley in Palm City. The event is rain or shine and only attendees over 21 can purchase bracelets for the wine tasting. Those over 21 who don’t wish to purchase bracelets can purchase individual cups of beer from “beer trucks” and food from vendors. Jane Rowley, whose title as Tra-
dition’s event coordinator doesn’t nearly describe her role, said that everyone should stop by, just to relax. “The great thing about Tradition is that you can come down, walk around and there are things to do,” she said. “You can go to a restaurant for a nice lunch or dinner and a lot of times, when we have an event you can sit on the grass in the Square and bring hula hoops and Frisbees. Now it’s Pokemon. Sometimes there are hundreds at night or on the weekends. Tradition is a great place to hang out.” For more information about Tradition and its upcoming events, visit the website www.traditionfl. com. Sunrise announces its Broadway series Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Sunrise Theatre has announced its “Broadway and Beyond on 2nd Street Series” for 2016-2017 and it has some familiar shows and some that are, frankly as new to me as they will be to you. First up is the national Broadway touring company of “Fame-

The Musical” on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. Based on the hit movie and the television series, the show is set from 1980-1984, during the last years of New York City’s celebrated High School for the Performing Arts. It follows a diverse group of students committed to four years of artistic and academic work and tackles issues that are as relevant today as they were then: prejudice, identity, self-worth, literacy, sexuality, substance abuse and perseverance. It also has that wonderful title song. It’s a show from a time when the world was ours and we were all going to live forever. Tickets are priced at $59 and $69. We all remember the iconic television series “Cheers,” set in the Boston bar where everybody knows your name. The Sunrise presents the national touring company production of “Cheers” and brings Sam Diane, Coach, Carla, Cliff and Norm to life as they play out the best moments of the classic hit series. The show features the interior of the bar and audiences will get to see Sam Malone and Diane Chambers meet for the first time, have their first kiss and have their first

f you’ve ever wondered why Britain and Argentina fought a war over the Falkland Islands, visiting them will not answer your question. Fortunately, for both nations, it was a short war, really just one short battle which Britain won handily. The Falklands consist of two main islands, East and West, plus some 700 smaller ones. Altogether, they are about the size of Connecticut, but home to just 2,500 people and a half million sheep, plus countless penguins and sea birds. People travel between the islands on ferries or small red airplanes. The islands are small, barren and inhospitable, cold in the summer and frigid in the winter. They lie off the coast of Argentina in the cold southern Atlantic, not too far north of the Southern Ocean which surrounds Antarctica, obviously on the north. The people are very friendly and very, very British. One of our highlights on a cruise around South America was a visit to these Falklands. After a month of Spanish language and culture, arriving in “England” was a welcome change. We approached the harbor at Stanley, located on the East Island and the islands capital. under a

Kevin Perkins 5. The golf swing is just that — it must be a swinging action —Subtract muscle and add motion. 6. Stay light on your feet. 7. You must strike level to ascending with your driver. Tee the ball higher and hit level, to slightly up on the ball. Also, side tilt your spine slightly away from the target. 8. You must hit with a properly lofted clubface. Rotate your left fore arm enough through impact and strike the ball with their left wrist flat not cupped. Kevin Perkins is a PGA Master Professional and operates his Golf Academy at The Evergreen Club in Palm City. Kevin has hosted and produced his own Television and Radio golf shows and co-authored the instructional Book “Golf Everyone”, published by Hunter Textbooks. He may be reached at (561) 301-3783 or e-mail dkperkins4@cs.com or visit Kevin’s website at www.kevinperkinsgolfacademy.com.

he average male golfer hits his driver approximately 197-205 yards, while the average touring professional hits his drive approximately 285 yards. That is an 80-yard difference. I would like to explore a general discussion on how to improve your driving distance. Let’s first look at the very basics on what creates distance and then talk about how to use techniques to improve these basics. 1. Club head speed – Obviously, you must increase your chub head speed to achieve more distance. 2. Centeredness of Contact – you must hit the center of the ball with the “sweet spot” of the clubface. 3. Angle of Approach- The club head must approach the ball level or be ascending. 4. Clubface Angle – the clubface must be perpendicular to your target line 5. Club head Path – The path of the club head must be moving down your target line. 772-465-8110 Here are some of the most common faults that rob you of power off the tee: 1. Your swing is too short. 2. The swing is too tight —tension is the greatest crippler in golf. 3. The wrists are not cocked sufficiently — ample wrist cock will lead to club head lag — one of the secrets to long driving! 4. The player never taps into the force of gravity and the loading and unloaded of the weight of the club head.
ST. LUCIE WEST — Kevin Perkins, PGA Master Professional, was recently nominated for the South Florida PGA Section Teacher of the Year award. His PGA peers, within the Section, nominated Perkins, who runs the nationally known Kevin Perkins Golf Academy, at The Evergreen Club, in Palm City.
A PGA nomination committee will evaluate the nominees, and select the Teacher of the Year sometime later in the year. “It is a privilege and an honor to have been nominated by my peers, said Perkins” from the lesson tee at The Evergreen Club. “Our Section is rich with some of the best teachers in America and, I am very pleased to be considered for this outstanding award.” Perkins added.

was such a pleasant surprise, and a warm welcome after a cold and wet morning. We next reluctantly climbed aboard our bog buggies to leave the beach and head inland to the Bluff Cove Farm, consisting of 35,000 acres housing 250,000 sheep. You might think it would take a number of farm hands to raise such a large herd of sheep. But, in fact, the ratio was one man, two dogs to 250,000 sheep. We found a similar ratio in New Zealand on a 1999 trip. Additional temporary help was used during shearing season. Only the lower fields of the farm were used for raising the sheep, while the uplands were left fallow. The owners supplemented their income with tourism and other pursuits. One of our bog drivers, for instance, was an IT consultant, while another was an electrical engineer. At the farm, we visited the shearing barn for a demonstration, met a lady spinning wool on a foot-powered wheel, with her husband making a scarf on a manual loom. We also saw a peat hole, where peat was harvested and stacked in square-foot cubes to dry. These were cured in a barn for a year before future construction of walls, etc.
After a wonderful lunch consisting of soups, goose, of course, lamb plus assorted pastries, which we washed down with Jim McGuffey a variety of local wines, we started our trip back to Stanley and our awaiting tenders. On the ride. we passed the six windmills that supply most of the electrical power for the island, and saw some of the fortifications, left from the 1982 war. The seas had calmed some by the afternoon, so the tender trip back to our ship was less harrowing and much drier. If you’re ever in the neighborhood, we recommend visiting “Little Britain.” By the way, oil was recently discovered in the icy waters surrounding the Falklands, which may explain the 1982 war. Editor’s note: The Falkland Island war, which took place over 10 weeks in 1982, was primarily a conflict over which nation, the United Kingdom or Argentina, had the right of sovereignty. The United Kingdom won the war, but Argentina still contests sovereignty to this day.

When we told them our story (the younger people spoke English) they insisted we were family and that we had to stay for the wedding. The groom then arrived to present the bride with her bouquet, and we had pictures taken with the family. Although we were unable to stay for the wedding, since we had an appointment in

Krakow, Poland, and because my sweat pants weren’t really wedding attire, we were thrilled to have had this experience. I kept in touch with my cousin who originally gave me the information regarding my grandmother’s hometown. On December 28, 2015 — one hundred and three years after my grandmother left Poland — I arranged to meet my cousin’s mother on a street corner in Orlando, Florida. We never could have imagined this meeting when we were growing up in different parts of the world, but it added a dimension to our lives that we will never forget.
