No triumph for Tigers

PALM CITY — Being an Indian River Lagoon activist takes knuckling down, getting dirty, pushing past obstacles, and keeping an unrelenting pace. No, really. This isn’t symbolic talk; it’s the inaugural Next Level Mud Run, Saturday, Feb. 7. “That’s my motto: ‘A dirty run for a clean cause,’” Chris Baker, organizer, said. The 4.5-mile, 7K, run to benefit Indian Riverkeeper will be at 4700 S.W. Green Farms Lane. The first competitive wave launches at 8 a.m., followed by a team wave at 8:30 a.m., a battle of the gyms wave at 9 a.m. and a run for fun at 9:30 a.m. The run will be followed by hours of music by four live bands and a disk jockey. The Jensen Ale House will be on hand with food and beverages, and there’ll be a bonfire that evening. Runners are $50 to $75, and spectators can show up for $30. “We have 40 obstacles,” said Baker, who is a partner

THE FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE APPROACH TO HEALTH RECOVERY

Thomas D. Kleinman, DC

Atlas Health and Wellness; 1516 SW Mapp Rd; Palm City • 772 781 9987

“Feel Better, Look Better, Live longer”

Here’s The Good News

The term “Functional Medicine” can seem rather ambiguous. Although this field is becoming more mainstream due to voices like Dr. Oz, Dr. Frank Lipman and Dr. Mark Hyman lauding it as the future of healthcare, Functional Medicine is still generally unknown to the public. The term and field of Functional Medicine refers to something completely different than what we have now come to know as conventional medicine which is now the standard model of care. To fully understand what functional medicine is, it is important to contrast it with conventional or allopathic medicine. Traditionally, an allopathic medical doctor, whether a GP or a specialist, uses drugs or hormones to deal with dysfunction or disease. The training in the standard model of care is to diagnose a disease and then match that disease with the corresponding drug that will reduce the symptoms. Hypothyroidism, high blood pressure, diabetes and elevated cholesterol are all treated in this fashion .This model of care works well for acute injuries, trauma, infection and emergencies. Sadly, it fails miserably in the care of chronic diseases which affect over 125 million Americans.

Functional Medicine is resolving and reversing chronic conditions relating to metabolic, allergic, digestive and hormonal, which most Americans suffer from on a daily basis. So what exactly is Functional Medicine and how can it help the millions of Americans dealing with chronic disease? Here are five basic principles that define Functional Medicine: 1. Functional Medicine views us as individuals; genetically and biochemically unique. This personalized health care treats the person, not the disease. It supports the normal healing mechanisms of the body, naturally, rather than attacking the disease directly. 2. Functional Medicine is deeply based in science. The latest research shows us that what happens within us is connected in a complicated network or web of internal glandular relationships. Understanding those relationships allows us to see deep into the functioning of the body. 3. Your body is intelligent and has the capacity for self-regulation, which expresses itself through a dynamic balance of all your body systems. 4. Your body has the ability to heal or prevent nearly all of the diseases of aging. 5. Health is not just the absence of disease, but a state of profound vitality. Here lies the clear distinction and definition of Functional Medicine. Instead of asking, “What drug matches up with this disease?”, Functional Medicine asks the vital questions that very few conventional doctors ask “Why has function been lost?” and “Why do you have this problem in the first place?” and “What can we do to restore normal function?” In other words, Functional Medicine looks to find the root cause or mechanism involved with any loss of function. This ultimately reveals why a set of symptoms (disease) is there in the first place. The first step to getting well is assessing your present level of health, finding out how healthy or unhealthy you currently are. This is done by measuring biomarkers that correlate to health and disease. We measure the amount of available energy your body has, in order to deal with or to adapt to the current level of stress being imposed on it. This is referred to as your Allostatic load. If the biomarkers are less that optimal to express ideal health, specific therapies and adjustments in lifestyle are suggested along with setting specific realistic health objectives. Disease has its origin in the failure of the body to adapt to the stressors being imposed upon it! So .... If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired and your current program is not working why not try a new approach? You have nothing to lose but your diagnosis!! Call our office 772 781 9987, schedule a consultation or register for one of our Functional Medicine Workshops. They’re free and may be just what you are looking for.

VVA draws a bead on annual shoot Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1041 is taking aim at raising record dollars at its annual Veterans’ Fun Shoot. It’ll be on March 7 at the South Florida Shooting Club, 500 S.W. Long Drive, Palm City. “This is the fourth annual fun shoot, and it’s our biggest fundraiser of the year,” George Mittler, president, said. “A hundred percent of that goes back to the veterans.” Mittler took the chairman’s seat at the Veterans Council of Martin County on Jan. 14. The council is made up of 13 veterans’ organizations. Among other things, it raises money for buses volunteers use to take about 2,000 elderly and indigent veterans to medical appointments at the West Palm Beach Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center annually. Mittler said the council will get a share from this year’s Veterans’ Fun Shoot for its transportation fund.

ENTEBBE from page 1 tion Thunderbolt — the 1976 Israeli military operation to free more than 100 hostages held by airplane hijackers thousands of miles from home. On Sunday, Feb. 8, Chabad Jewish Center of Martin & S. Lucie Counties will have Operation Thunderbolt commando Sassy Reuven speaking at the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. The event will start at 3 p.m. with a showing of the 1977 movie “Raid on Entebbe,” with Peter Finch, Charles Bronson and Yaphet Koto. Rabbi Shlomo Uminer was a child when the Air France plane was hijacked and taken to Uganda during America’s bicentennial. Nevertheless, he said the terrorists’ quick defeat remains an often-discussed inspiration to Jews. “The world was standing by talking and Israel stood up and said, ‘This can’t happen,’” Uminer said. “We need to reflect on that and reflect on our time and stand up, stand up for the safety of our country and our civilization.” Back in 1976, Reuven was a 21-year-old Israeli soldier. On Friday, July 2, he was told to get ready for a mission. Reuven was well aware that the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and Revolutionary Cells terrorists had almost seven dozen Israeli citizens and Jews hostage in Uganda. Still, Reuven figured he was getting ready for another of numerous routine missions in the Golan Heights. “About (3 p.m.), they told us we were going to rescue the hostages,” he said. “I did not believe we were going all the way to Entebbe.”

Reuven was on the first plane to land at the Entebbe Airport on Sunday, July 4, to rescue 106 hostages. He was the second commando to step off it. It was about 11 p.m., local time. Less than an hour later, the about 100 Israeli commandos had rescued 102 hostages, killed all the plane hijackers, crippled the Ugandan air force from pursuit, and left the airport a disorientating melee to hamstring the Ugandan army. The mission’s losses were amazingly thin. Three hostages were killed during the raid, along with Lt. Col. Yonathan Netanyahu. The commandos had to fight not just the hijackers, but the Ugandan army, too. Several of the African nation’s soldiers died in the short firefight. “(Ugandan soldiers) didn’t know who they were against,” Reuven said. “They had no idea. We landed, within four minutes the terrorists were eliminated and fires were everywhere. They were in defense mode.” Reuven continued serving in the Israel Defense Forces until a training accident nearly took his leg. He moved to the United States after and got engineering degrees. Reuven lives in California and has a construction development company. Years of military operations to dismantle terrorist infrastructure convinced Reuven that the world will never be done with fighting evil. “Today it’s (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria),” he said.

“Yesterday, it was Hamas. Day before yesterday, it was Black September.” But, he’s not pessimistic. Reuven said Operation Thunderbolt is proof that nations can — and must — stand against terrorists and win. Is there a book about Operation Thunderbolt in Reuven’s future? “There are other books out there,” he said. “I think another book will be a little bit boring. Other people did it.” That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a few things to tell folks, and that’s why he does the presentations. “I have information they can’t read in any book or Internet site,” Reuven said. Saturday night fervor sweeping Palm City Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — Pastor Russ Jones, Faith Family Worship Center, said some folks just can’t get to church. “Most of them are in the service industry of some sort and can’t attend on Sunday,” he said. On Feb. 7 the church will start a new service time: Saturdays at 6 p.m. Faith Family, 3020 S.W. Mapp Road, is at least the third evangelical church in Palm City to take that time slot. The others are Coastal Life and Calvary Chapel of Palm City. “The first reason is our one Sunday service is full,” Jones said. “That forced us to look at adding a second service. Rather than put on a second (Sunday morning) service, we wanted to fulfil a need in the community.” Pastor Larry Sullivan, Calvary Chapel, said his church started Saturday services last fall. “It’s small, we’re talking 30, 40 people,” he said. “Sometimes 50. It varies. We’ve had 80, 90 on occasion, but that would not be typical.” Sullivan said Calvary started the Saturday service mostly as a convenience for people who can’t make it to church on Sunday,

The church hopes to give people who can’t, or won’t, attend on Sundays, an alternative to Sunday services. Nationally church attendance has been dropping off rapidly. Jones said Saturday services appeal most to the middle-aged and younger, those among whom attendance has been declining the fastest. blies of God Fellowship and helps about 25 churches in and near Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Okeechobee and Palm Beach counties. Jones said the churches in his area, Section 15, range from about 40 to 4,000 regular attendees. Just shy of half have added Saturday services for various reasons. “Some parts of the country, Friday services are doing well,” Jones said. “In this part of the nation, Saturday seems to click.” While Faith Family, which has about 120 regular and semi-regular attendees, keeps its pews near their capacity, fewer Americans are making their ways to church than ever. According to the Barna Group, a Christian demographic research firm, the number of people who attend services at least monthly has dropped from about 70 percent 25 years ago to 57 percent now. The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life released a report in 2012 titled, “‘Nones’ on the Rise: One-in-Five Adults Have No Religious Affiliation.” “In the last five years alone, the unaffiliated have increased from just over 15% to just under 20% of all U.S. adults,” the report reads. “Their ranks now include more than 13 million self-described atheists and agnostics

(nearly 6% of the U.S. public), as well as nearly 33 million people who say they have no particular religious affiliation (14%).” Jones said that an oft-cited statistic among pastors is that only three out of every 20 churches is growing. The other 17 are either plateaued or declining. “The three that are growing, two are transfer growth,” he said. “People moving in from other churches.” For some churches that have them, Friday and Saturday services are partially a response to declining churchgoing. They’re giving more people who aren’t attending any church convenient times they can get to services to get more Christians back in, and to reach out to others to give church a try. Sullivan said Calvary’s Saturday service seems to attract some who weren’t going to church. “We have attracted new people, no doubt about that,” he said. “We’ve had people come who said they came because it’s Saturday.” Sullivan added that there are folks who go to his church on Saturday and others on Sunday. Jones said some churches are using Friday and Saturday services to continue growing attendance within the resources they have to hold off on expanding facilities or adding new locations, both of which can involve huge resources. Another trend in churches, Jones said, is moving Sunday morning services to later times to attract younger families. “Your families like to come to the later services, simply because it’s hard to get the kids up,” he said. Some are using Friday and Saturday services specifically as an evangelism outreach tool aiming to win more converts by offering less churchy services. Jones said while Faith Family is always in the business of getting people to give God a look, it’s not using the Saturday service as a particular way to do that. He said the services are likely to appeal to a younger and more casual churchgoer. “It’s going to be strong middle age and younger,” he said. With that comes less willingness to put on the Sunday best. “We admitted that right up front — you’re not going to get suits on Saturday,” Jones said. However,

SATURDAY from page 6 he added, “I see more shorts and flip-flops on Sunday than suits or ties.” Sullivan said that’s what Calvary has been experiencing. “It has attracted a slightly younger audience,” he said. “On Saturday nights, we tend to get more 20s and 30s.” Sullivan said Calvary hasn’t widely promoted its Saturday services, because it’s still working on getting the right “sound” for it. He offered a tip to churches considering Saturday services — it shouldn’t be a training ground for inexperienced worship leaders and ministers waiting for Sunday slots to open for them. “The main thing is don’t make it a second-class service,” Sullivan said. “Give it everything you would a Sunday service.” Faith Family, being affiliated with the Assemblies of God, is Pentecostal, a Christian movement most trace to the Azusa Street Revival that started in 1906. Pentecostals believe that the spiritual gifts outlined in 1 Corinthians 12, are physical manifestations of interaction with the Holy Spirit that continue to the modern time. Almost certainly Pentecostalism’s most famous practice is glossolalia, most commonly called “speak-

ing in tongues.” Sometimes the language spoken is understood to be spiritual in origin and not one used on Earth. Other times, speaking in tongues is understood to be xenoglossy, a speaker spontaneously using an existing language he or she has never studied, such as French or Chinese. Calvary Chapel of Palm City is affiliated with Calvary Chapel, an association of churches headquartered in Costa Mesa, Calif., That organization, too, believes in the gifts of the spirit. Jones said he expects that Saturday church will attract some who regularly attend services elsewhere. However — “Policy is we do not pursue them (to join) if they’re going to another church,” he said. “We’re not in the sheep stealing business.” Calvary is launching a series of messages from Ecclesiastes for its Saturday services on Feb. 7. Attempts to reach Coastal Life by press time were unsuccessful. In addition to at least the three evangelical churches having Saturday services in Palm City, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church has Saturday vigils at 4 and 5:30 p.m. Faith Family is on the web at www.ffwc.us. Calvary is at 1633 S.W. 34th St., and on the web at www.palmcitycalvary.com.

Container full of ice? “That’ll freeze a lot of people,” Baker said. Yikes. Baker said after moving to the Treasure Coast, he quickly learned about the water issues. Like many, he thought, somebody should do something about that, and went on with his day. “One day I took my daughter out on a canoe,” he said. “She was (a

toddler). She said, ‘Daddy, why is the water so brown?’ So I explained to her how we were dirtying it. She said, ‘Can you clean it?’” Well, you know, Baker is a daddy. If his little girl wants him to clean the river, then that’s exactly what he was going to do. He decided to combine his love for obstacle-course running and newfound activism for the Indian River Lagoon. Baker said many area gyms have been calling, offering him help. “A lot of these competitors are uniting,” he said. For more, or to register, visit www. nextlevelmudrun.com, or call (828) 773-4299.

SHOOT from page 3 “The bus needs to be replaced in Martin County,” he said. Last year’s shoot had 172 shooters and 17 sponsors. It raised about $20,000 after expenses. The previous year, there were 119 participants and it raised about $15,000. In addition to raising money for the council to buy a new bus to take veterans to medical appointments, VVA 1041 will give some cash to the Martin County Veterans Services’ rapid-response fund. The chapter started the fund with money from its first shoot and auction. In 2013, the guys at 1041 had an idea: What if the Martin County Veterans Service Office supervisor, Tony Reese, had a pot of money to help cashstrapped veterans? Normally Reese fills his days helping veterans file claims and appeals to the VA But, a few times a month he gets veterans who need things the VA doesn’t offer, or takes a long time getting to. Used to be that Reese would pull out his Rolodex and start calling veterans organizations for donations to those folks. VVA 1041 just didn’t like the thought of hungry veterans waiting for Reese to get a hold of people for help. So, they told him about their idea: a rapid-response fund that he could tap immediately. Reese thought the then-upstart chapter meant $500, $1,000. After all, it had maybe 70 some members. He said getting a $17,500 check for a rapid-response account bowled him over. “It makes my job 10 times easier,” he told Your Voice News & Views in a previous interview. “I don’t have to think how to get (a veteran in need) help. I can focus on what help he needs.” Part of the money raised by

the shoot will go to scholarships for students who complete the junior ROTC programs at Martin County, Jensen Beach and South Fork high schools that are heading to college. Martin and Jensen have Air Force programs; South Fork has an Army program. Mittler said that with a growing number of veterans heading to school as non-traditional students, the VVA chapter saw another educational need. “(The chapter) has a scholarship for veterans attending Indian River State College,” he said. “The government does not pay 100 percent for them to go back to school. They have books and stuff like that, so we set up a scholarship fund for veterans to go to college there.” The clay shoot is $150 a person, which includes ammo, breakfast and lunch. Mittler said the chapter is seeking sponsors. The VVA 1041 meets at Sewall’s Point Town Hall, 1 S. Blessing of the Fleet ready to sail STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — The Blessing of the Fleet and Marine Parade will set sail on Saturday, Feb. 7. This year the theme is “Save Our River and Keep Our Waterways Open.” “I think we’re going to have a bigger turnout than last year,” Fred Dulas, commodore, said. “We’ve added two more clubs to the organization.” Last year about 100 boats showed up for blessings invoked by Father Pat Amabile, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Palm City, along with reverends Carol Barron, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Stuart, and Douglas Jewett, North Stuart Baptist Church. At least three members of the clergy are slated to be on hand to bless boats and their captains. Among them is Rabbi Arthur Rutberg, Treasure

Catholic priest lives ‘in the shadow of a giant’ Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — Tom Gallub is a Catholic priest who enjoys joining couples in holy matrimony. Not everyone would agree that he’s Catholic, let alone a priest, however. “Independent Catholics live in the shadow of a giant,” he said. “Catholic has become the generic term for the Roman Catholic Church.” Gallub, a member of the Ascension Alliance, ministers at St. Julian of Norwich Old Catholic Church, Port St. Lucie. Additionally, he has a wedding ministry in Martin County, Ascension by the Sea. In the last couple weeks, some area same-sex couples started seeking ministers willing to marry them. Many won’t, due to religious beliefs. Gallub, who is in a same-sex marriage, is one who will. “If they want a Catholic wedding, that’s fine,” he said. “If they want a Christian marriage, that’s fine. I’ve done interfaith marriages.” U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle overturned Florida’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage,

and ordered clerks of courts to start issuing marriage licenses on Tuesday, Jan. 6. By the end of the first week, 10 same-sex couples got marriage licenses, which are valid for 60 days, in Martin County. That week, Martin’s Clerk, Carolyn Timmann, issued 19 marriage licenses. Three of the same-sex couples were males; seven were females. At least one of the same-sex couples who got applications were from Palm City and were married by the next week. Gallub, 70, said he’s also considering starting an independent Catholic congregation in Palm City, or at least Martin County. He was raised in the Roman Catholic Church. “When I confessed to the priest I was homosexual, I was told it was best if I didn’t come back to church,” he said. The rejection wounded Gallub. “It did keep me from religion for many years,” he said. Gallub added, “When I was studying in Germany, I became connected with an Old Catholic Church.” The First Vatican Council, convoked by Pope Pius IX, largely in response to sweeping social changes brought on by the

Rabid raccoon found in county FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY -- A raccoon that came in contact with a dog in Stuart has tested positive for rabies. The dog was vaccinated, received a booster, and for precautionary purposes will be quarantined and monitored by Martin County Animal Control. This is the first case of rabies in Martin County this year. Rabies is a virus that is transmitted from the bite or scratch of a rabid animal. Any mammal can get rabies. The most common carriers of rabies are raccoons, skunks, bats, foxes and coyotes. Domestic mammals can also get rabies. Cats are the most frequently reported rabid domestic

FATHER from page 10 when the ecumenical council met around 1870. In a world where questioning authority and tradition was increasingly accepted, the council strongly asserted the doctrine of papal infallibility on matters of morality and faith. While in practice, the doctrine is limited by high threshold — it’s not as though Roman Catholics think everything a pope says is infallible — its assertion was enough to send many Austrian, German and Swiss Catholics to rejecting the Vatican and joining with existing Catholics who’d rejected Rome, but laid claim to apostolic succession. However popular Pope Francis may be throughout the world for his seeming unpretentiousness and compassion, “We’re not aligned with the pope,” Gallub said. Unlike the Vatican, the Old Catholic Church says the remarried can receive the Eucharist, women can serve in the clergy, and gay people can wed. “The Old Catholic Church, as a rule, has been tremendously progressive,” Gallub said. Old Catholics are free to accept some of their church’s ideas, and not others. “We consider each person to

have an individual spiritual journey,” Gallub said. But at the heart of Catholicism is the sacraments. “Seven sacraments, we do it,” Gallub said. “We’re Catholic priests. That’s what we do.” Dianne Laubert, director of the communications office at the Diocese of Palm Beach, said the Roman Catholic Church generally doesn’t recognize sacraments administered by Old Catholic priests. She said the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and other Christian and Catholic organizations are complex and it’s usually difficult to make broad generalizations. Nevertheless: “Because they are not aligned with the Vatican, it’s not a true Eucharist,” she said. Laubert provided Your Voice News & Views with a 2010 explanation by archimandrite Glen Pothier, adjutant judicial vicar of the diocese. “A simple response to anyone who asks might be: The Old Catholic Church and the Free United Catholic Church are schismatic in that they hold beliefs in certain areas that (are) different from the established Catholic Church. Their priests are dubiously ordained, and therefore the dispensation of

sacraments is, at best, dubiously conferred. The consistent praxis of the Holy See has been to treat them as invalid because apostolic succession has not been preserved in its totality, nor has the deposit of faith been transmitted authentically.” For Gallub, the matter is simple — he’s a priest. “I believe in Christ and his teachings,” he said. “I believe in Christ as the redeemer. I believe that Christ died for our sins, to redeem our sins, and I believe in eternal life.” Gallub said that the Roman Catholic Church, and other conservative religious organizations, have made innumerable outcasts and refugees, and Old Catholic priests are always ready to serve them. “Organizations like ours are places where people disparaged by religions come to find God,” he said. “People who have been shunned. People made to feel they were excluded from the love of God come through our doors. We receive one soul at a time.” St. Julian of Norwich Old Catholic Church is at 1750 S.E. FLEET from page 9 Coast Jewish Centre. Fleet organizers have contacted him for several years. Getting a rabbi who’s free on Saturday is something of a miracle. But, Rutberg said he’s wanted to be part of the fleet blessing for a long time. “This will be the first year I’ll actually get to do it,” he said. The rabbi said he’s still deciding what blessing to invoke for the boats and captains. Definitely, he said, wisdom to anticipate and avoid problems outweighs divine intervention to get through them on land or water. “May you come back better than you left,” he said is one of his likely blessings for boats and captains. Last year, the parade theme was “Bless and Save Our River,” a naked reference to the ecological disasters of Lake Okeechobee water releases during the summer of 2013. This year’s theme flagrantly broaches the controversial All Aboard Florida. Florida East Coast Industries, which owns rail lines running through Stuart, has started some related construction for the proposed 235-mile, privately owned passenger train service from Miami to Orlando International Airport that’ll have stops in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Michael Reininger, president, said he expects All Aboard Florida will roll trains the entire distance by 2017. It’ll start with limited service between West Palm Beach and Miami by 2016, he said. However, opposition to All Aboard Florida exploded last year. Much of the criticism has centered on the train bridge nestled between the Roosevelt, U.S. Highway 1, and Dixie Highway bridges in Stuart. Many in the marine industry say that the proposed 32 passenger trains a day will effectively close the St. Lucie River, which is part of the Okeechobee Waterway, to navigation and pretty well end area sailing. The train bridge sits where the North and South forks meet and pool together heading east.

ALPHA

Palm City’s Darrell Brand, immediate past commodore, said that while the theme broaches boaters’ concerns about All Aboard Florida, the blessing and parade are not a protest. “Sheer numbers of people showing up will show the concern that there is,” he said. According to the event website, www.theblessingofthefleet.com, when the tradition of blessing fleets got launched is lost to antiquity. It could have started with Greek fishermen. But, like all things arcane, a really good legend grew. Legend tells, fishermen from Sicily were caught in a storm and found their way home only because of a beckoning, mysterious light. “There, they discovered that the light came from a medallion of the Madonna del Lume (Mother of Light) set in a grotto high on a cliff,” the website reads. Could be. What’s certain is Donald “Mac” McLean started the local annual fleet blessing after moving from San Francisco. It was something of a big affair back in the Golden Gate City. So, he organized one here. It happened in November 1971. In 1991, folks started dressing their crafts. The accompanying boat parades started in ’96. So, how to get in on the blessing of the fleet? Congregate no later than noon on the North Fork of the St. Lucie, north of Harbor Ridge Yacht and Country Club. There’ll be buoyed marker flags for area yacht clubs. One will be marked “S” for independent and commercial crafts. The parade will launch at 12:30 p.m. heading south along the western side of the channel. The review boat will be the Cat’s in the Hatt. The clergy will be on it. Sponsoring clubs include Circle Bay Yacht, Cocoanut Point Yacht, Palm Cove Yacht, St. Lucie Sailing, Stuart Corinthian Yacht, and Windjammer Yacht clubs. Brand said, “This event is for everything. Big boats, small boats.”

ccording to one of the largest organizations for young people and social change, children who study music reap some serious benefits. At Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, we know this and see it every day, but in case you wondered why music education is so important and why we work so hard to ensure that students continue to have opportunities to learn to play instruments, study and perform, here are a few reasons:

Did you know that children who study a musical instrument are more likely to excel in all of their studies, work better in teams, have enhanced critical thinking skills, stay in school, and pursue further education? Also, secondary students who participated in a music group at school reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances (tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs)? And, schools with music programs have an estimated 90.2

We believe in the power of music, and we want to make sure we pass that magic along to the next generation through scholarship, opportunities, and education. There are lots of investments with a much lower return, but

Barn presents drama with a side of comedy Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

She has a great stage presence and is completely relaxed. It’s terrific to work with all of them. I have seldom directed a more perfectly cast production.” Brown noted that the play is very different from the 1956 movie, “Bus Stop,” starring Marilyn Monroe. “The movie was a star vehicle

for Marilyn Monroe,” he said “It was greatly rewritten for her. The play is an ensemble play that’s touching and heartwarming.” In his program notes for the production, Brown shared his view of Inge’s vision. “All the characters in ‘Bus Stop’ have to give up something in order to get something better. They have to let go of their expectations of love and life in order to

MARTIN COUNTY — William Inge’s 1955 drama, “Bus Stop,” tells the story of a bus full of passengers who are stranded in rural Kansas during a snowstorm. Although the play takes place during a four-hour period, there are currents and cross-currents as old relationships are rekindled and new ones begun. The cast includes Liv-Marie Damm as Elma Duckworth, a waitress; Francine Beckstead as Grace Hoylard, owner of the diner; Marty Dillis as Will Masters, a sheriff; Charlotte Belanger as Cherie, a singer; John Avitabile as Dr. Gerald Lyman, a former college professor; Mitch Price as Carl, a bus driver; Tom Farley as Virgil Blessing, a ranch hand; and Bryan Childe as Bo Decker; a young rancher and cowboy. The cast is a mixture of Barn veterans and newcomers. Harold Brown, the show’s director, is thrilled with how his cast has coalesced into the ensemble Inge meant it to be. He is particularly pleased with Charlotte Belanger, who plays Cherie. “It’s her first Barn production,”

gain both love and life. This paradox — this truth — is the stuff of William Inge’s remarkable play about ‘ordinary’ people stranded for the night in a small-town diner during a snowstorm. ‘The plays of William Inge are about the ordinary people of the Midwest and Inge reveals what is extraordinary about them.” Brown calls the play “a marvelous slice of American pie,” and said that while it is considered a drama, there are comic elements. “It doesn’t exist for laughs, but it isn’t an “O’Neill tragedy,” he said. It’s a charming play between the two. Charming can be milky, but this has lots of meat and substance. Each of us has to leave some of ourselves to get something for ourselves.”

Artists for a Cause announces cast of Martin County Singing with the Stars FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — Artists for a Cause is pleased to announce the cast of the second annual Singing with the Stars performance, competition and fundraiser. The nonprofit organization called out to singers in the community to apply and audition to compete in Singing with the Stars, and they were heard. Out of the many applications received, seven community “note”-able stars have been selected and paired with professional singers. Each duo has selected their song and has begun their practice sessions and fundraising efforts as they prepare for the competition on stage at StarStruck Theatre in Stuart on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. This year’s cast of Singing with the Stars is peppered with wellknown members of the community in fields varying from Major League Baseball to Broadway. The professional singers were carefully selected by Artists for a Cause founder and executive

The local “note”-able community stars include: Anne Scott, Martin County Commissioner; Rusty Meacham, Major League Baseball alumni; Leslie Levy, owner of Style Encore Stuart and Plato’s Closet; Shaun Kelly, owner of Perfectly Legal Office Solutions; Glenn Webber, attorney; Rick Creech, civil engineering and surveying consultant, and Hank Gonzalez of Sailfish Point Realty. The event is about more than the glitz and glamour of performing on stage — the community stars are also tasked with raising funds for Artists for a Cause. While the cast is excited to get onstage and compete to win the “Best Performance” category, there is also an award category for the fundraising portion. The first cast rehearsal was Monday, Jan. 5 and the energy in the room was palpable. As the community stars and celebrity professionals worked on group numbers separately, each pair of duets were

professionally coached to prepare for the competition. The cast members, although friendly, were ready to compete and jested about everything from who could raise the most money, to who chose the best song, to who’s Florida heritage stemmed back the furthest. Cast member and Martin County Commissioner Anne Scott summed up the feeling in the room when she said, “I know something is wrong if a day goes by and I’m not bursting into song!” “We have a very dynamic group of individuals performing this year and are excited to watch them showcase their talent while using their creativity to raise funds,” Barber said. “Singing with the Stars is our signature fundraising event with the proceeds helping our organization to continue to do what we do best — to use art as a catalyst to improve communities.” The cast is also hard at work securing sponsors. Thank you to Virtuoso sponsor Mr. Chain, Harmony Sponsor Paul J. Feinsinger, CPA, CFP and Duet sponsor NisAir, as well as Your Voice News & Views for their partnership. Artists for a Cause also thanks Elisabeth Lahti, The William H. Donner Foundation, The Elmezzi Foundation, and The MAH Foundation for their continued support of programs that help artists to meet the critical needs of the community. Artists for a Cause is a Palm Citybased, national nonprofit organization that helps visual and performing artists to use their talents for community improvement, stimulating culture, while addressing the critical needs of communities. Some programs help artists and charities to get the most out of their collaboration, while most produce results directly, by feeding the poor, healing the sick, or solving other problems through unique artistic solutions. Additionally, we never ask artist professionals in a struggling industry to donate or give away their livelihood. No program is merely about art for arts’ sake — Artists for a Cause is about the arts as a solution. Current programs include Dance for Food, Therapeutic Arts, Support for Charities, Elisabeth Lahti Donated Instrument Closet, Classical for Schools, Artists for a Cause Scholarships, Artists for a Cause High School Clubs — all of which improve communities through artistic endeavors.
