Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Alicia Chavez, (79) of Stuart, Abby Batchelor (33) of Indiantown and Anna Quesada (420) of Palm City pass the runners heading in the opposite direction as they make their way to the finish of the Veterans Memorial Bridge 5k Run before the opening ceremonies Saturday, Nov. 16. The bridge is scheduled to officially open to auto traffic before the end of the year.

The Veterans Memorial Bridge between Palm City and Stuart spans far more than the St. Lucie River’s South Fork and Okeechobee Waterway. Hundreds headed to dedication ceremonies on Saturday, Nov. 16, and saw it connecting veterans and civilians, Republicans and Democrats, state and federal legislators and local-government commissioners. “Naming the bridge for veterans who’ve (sacrificed much) could not be more appropriate,” former Florida Senate President Ken Pruitt said to those gathered. Pruitt is now St. Lucie’s property appraiser. Numerous speakers at the dedication largely credited his persistent efforts at the state PRSRT STD US POSTAGE PAID FORT PIERCE, FL PERMIT NO. 248 ECRWSS

capitol years ago for the once proposed Indian Street Bridge’s readiness to get federal funding when the Congress enacted the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, ARRA, in 2009. There was the hue and cry for “shovel ready projects.” Martin County had one, and got about $65 million to build it. “This was the largest what we call ARRA project in the state,” James Wolfe, district secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation, said. The Martin County Board of County Commissioners in 2011 voted to rename the project Veterans Memorial Bridge. The Veterans Council of Martin County proposed the name, along with former Martin County Veterans Service Office supervisor John Haddox. He’s now the county commissioner representing Palm City. The Navy veteran emceed the dedication ceremony. Troy McDonald, Stuart city commissioner, said the bridge was a fitting tribute to veterans who’ve bridged their military experience to civilian lives. “Many times veterans have returned home to use the skills they learned in the military to build a stronger, better nation,”
he said. Wolfe said future drivers will likely not realize that the bridge took decades to fund. “It’s going to seem like it was inevitable that it was here,” he told the audience. “But, there were many times it seemed impossible.” Planners believe the bridge will affect traffic patterns mostly for Martin and St. Lucie commuters. Many who live in St. Lucie work in Stuart and have only a couple routes to get to and from work. Many traverse State Road 714, Martin Downs Boulevard, in Palm City to and from the Ronald Reagan Turnpike, or surface roads. But there’s the bottleneck they face: the Palm City Bridge. Crossers jostle with about 45,000 drivers a day on the 1,900-foot, four-lane bridge. In other words, more than a four-lane bridge can reasonably handle. Back in the ‘90s, planners feared upwards to 65,000 trips a day on the Palm City Bridge within a decade. Terry Rauth, Martin County’s deputy county engineer, explained that didn’t happen.
See BRIDGE page A6
Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Joan Klostreich earned her spot in history as the first woman over the new bridge in the Veterans Memorial Bridge 5k Run before the opening ceremonies Saturday, Nov. 16. The bridge is scheduled to officially open to auto traffic before the end of the year. Klostriech finished with a time of 20:06.8 and seventh overall.

Goodwill warms up fall shopping season FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
PALM CITY — As the fall shopping season starts, Heather Higdon said there’s no chill at Goodwill these days. “They’ve been warming up to us,” she said. “At first, a lot of people didn’t want us here.” The Palm City resident is assistant manager of Gulfstream Goodwill Industries retail store at 3078 S.W. Martin Downs Blvd. She said some Palm Cityites expressed reluctance about having a donation-based thrift store west of the St. Lucie River. Flo Howe said she never heard any concerns around the Palm City Chamber of Commerce when Goodwill opened in March. She said if there were any unspoken reservations, they’re certainly allayed now. “It’s a nice store,” Howe said. “They have a lot of nice namebrand shoes. Some look like they’ve never been worn.” The chamber had its Thursday morning social at Goodwill on July 25. Howe said about 50 attendees were like kids in the candy store. Or, like adults finding some great deals.
“They were shopping like you wouldn’t believe, buddy,” she said. The store has 26 workers. Six have disabilities that could give some employers pause, although the Americans with Disabilities Act and other federal and state laws are supposed to protect workers from that kind of discrimination. “We hire people who have hard backgrounds others probably won’t, Higdon said. Fran Rooks is one such worker at the Palm City store. She was struck with lupus in the ‘90s, which is now in remission, followed by a stroke that left her hemiplegic. Additionally, she’s had much time out of the workforce while caring for family members. Rooks is 74. “Of course you can’t live on Social Security, so thank God for Goodwill,” she said. “It keeps me alive — something to focus on.” Then there’s Brad Highwood. He rolls to work at Goodwill, then rolls at work. The 52-year-old uses a wheelchair to get around. Highwood was diagnosed with transverse myelitis in 2000. Those with the spinal-cord disease often must use wheelchairs,

Those that don’t sell eventually go to other Goodwill shops, or to overseas resellers. but not always. Highwood said he sought a job for a long time before landing one at Goodwill. “It took about four years,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of management experience. We put in (re-

Rare Earth Gallery is making a buzz in downtown Stuart as the recent recipient of the City of Stuart’s quarterly Business Buzz Award. The award is presented by Stuart’s Community Redevelopment Agency. The gallery was founded 38 years ago and has been in historic downtown Stuart since 1991. Rare Earth Gallery recently completed a renovation of its unique and handcrafted artwork, including an expanded gallery space with new displays, new artists and new artwork from more than 70 artists. The gallery specializes in original art and gicleés, ceramics, glassware, wood bowls and vases, oil and watercolor paintings and photographs, handcraft-
ed jewelry and pottery among many other gift items. Steve and Becky Binder, owners of Rare Earth since 2009, were presented a Certificate of Recognition at a recent Coffee with the City Manager. The award is given to “buzzworthy” businesses for helping to create a positive image for the City of Stuart and its popular CRA district. “The gallery has a 30% increase in retail gallery space with unique artwork for homes and businesses” said Binder. “Rare Earth has become a destination for art-minded customers. We support our community with our annual HeARTS 4 Hospice fundraiser around Valentine’s Day, and with more than 60% of our artists being Floridians.” Binder was just elected 2014 President of the Downtown Business Asso-
ciation. DBA’s purpose is to promote community pride and unity by actively conducting community events throughout the year. Binder is coordinating a reopening of the gallery on Saturday, December 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Gift packages are part of give-aways throughout the day. Refreshments are available. The Buzz Award was first presented in 2009. Four businesses are recognized each year with the city demonstrating its growth in business since 1986 when the City Commission started a revitalization project of the downtown area. Rare Earth Gallery is located at 41 SW Flagler Street in Historic Downtown Stuart. For additional information, contact 772.287.7744 or go online at www.rareearthgallery.com.

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer The Veterans Memorial Bridge was celebrated with an official dedication ceremony, ribbon cutting and a 5K race. Included in the ribbon cutting were Rep MayLynn Magar, District 82, Stuart City Commissioner Troy McDonald, Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith, Rep Gayle Harrell District 83, Martin County Commissioner John Haddox, Ken Pruitt, former State Senate president and current property appraiser for St. Lucie County and Martin County Commissioner Ed Fielding. The $65 million dollar bridge is scheduled to open to traffic before the end of the year. Ken Pruitt spoke of the process of getting the Veterans Memorial Bridge to become a reality when the groundwork was started when he was the Senate president for the state of Florida. The groundwork of substantial progress for the bridge was started in the 1990s with property acquisition along its corridor. The $65 million bridge is scheduled to open to traffic before the end of the year.

“It went to 44,507,” she said in a previous interview. “The reason is the 43,300 (trips) is more than a four-lane road can handle. People start finding other ways. They start avoiding it.” And Rauth thinks she knows how drivers are avoiding the Palm City Bridge until Veterans Memorial opens. “What ended up happening is (Interstate 95’s State Road 76 — Kanner Highway — interchange) ended up reaching capacity. We feel that happened because of a lot of people avoiding going over the Palm City Bridge.” Rauth said much of that avoidance traffic is likely heading to and coming from the southern and western ends of Palm City, and many of those drivers will head to Martin Highway to use the 3,100-foot Veterans Memorial when it’s opened. Projections are that’ll be by Christmas. Commuters from the north will also likely alter their driving behaviors, taking pressure off the Kanner inter-
change and Palm City Bridge. State Representative Gayle Harrell, Stuart, told the audience she vividly recalls trying to cross the Palm City Bridge back in the 1960s. Boats often interrupted traffic on the old turn bridge. “We sat for over an hour and a half trying to cross the wooden bridge,” she said. Then that bridge was replaced with a two-lane arching bridge in the early ‘70s. Things were better, Harrell said. For a little while. By the early 1990s, the Palm City Bridge had two lanes added. “Pretty soon, we again had to wait and wait and wait to cross that bridge,” Harrell said. In addition to adding four lanes directly connecting Palm City and Stuart, the bridge’s 120-foot girth will sport 10-foot shoulders for pedestrians and bicyclists. Fishing will be prohibited, because of a lack of parking. The bridge gives boaters 55 feet of clearance. George Denti, project manager, said that when the bridge opens to traffic, there’ll be little fanfare. “A couple guys will go out there and move the barricades,” he said.

GOODWILL from page A3 of Vocational Rehabilitation. Highwood said that Gulfstream Goodwill was on a list of disabilities-friendly employers the division works with. The stores are, by far, the charity’s largest fundraiser. In 2012 Gulfstream Goodwill made almost $30 million from its 24 stores. Gulfstream is in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Palm Beach and Okeechobee counties. Higdon said the Palm City store does about $2,000 a day in sales. It gets about 20 bulk donation drop offs a day. Higdon said that workers go through donations and keep those items with a strong likelihood of selling at the store, based on previous purchases. Others go to stores where they’re likely to sell, or to the Goodwill clearance center in Fort Pierce. Among other
things, the clearance center sales textiles, such as clothes and purses, for $1.99 a pound. Those items frequently go to overseas markets. “There’s a not a price value we can put on donations,” Higdon said. She said donations are picking up, likely as families make room for the holiday shopping season. That’s good, Higdon said, because shopping is picking up, too. Some shoppers, she said, are likely struggling families using Goodwill to improve their holiday gift-giving possibilities. The store is open for shopping and donations Mondays to Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Sudays it’s open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The phone number is (772) 283-0412. There’s also an attended donation center at 4125 S.W. Martin Highway.

It’s late autumn, nearing winter. In Florida that means more bicycles are on the roads — and more bicyclists die there. November and December are the peak of Florida’s bicycle-fatality season, which runs roughly to March. “Florida law 3 feet.” If that reminder to drivers they have legal obligations to give bicycles at least a yard when passing looks familiar, you’ve likely seen me on the roads. Those words are on a sign I’ve recently taken to wearing when bicycling. You see, I love cycling. When I moved to Martin County seven months ago, I was looking forward to bicycling around my new home. I was in for a shock. The Treasure Coast has the worst drivers I’ve ever encountered. I’m not alone in that assessment. Tod Mowery, St. Lucie County Commissioner, loves bicycling,

DRIVERS from page A7 tered. When a friend was seriously injured in a collision, Mowery pretty much hung up the pedals. George Stokus, manager of the Martin County Airport, rides to work nearly daily. He’s described some pretty frightening interactions with cars. I’ve had numerous conversations with people who’ve said they’ve quit riding around the Treasure Coast after collisions, near hits, or general fear of drivers’ frequent bad attitudes. The Treasure Coast is the only place where I’ve been in collisions. Not once, by the way. Two drivers have hit me. One clipped the mirror off my handlebar as he rushed to get into a strip mall. The other squeezed me to the sidewalk in his hurry to get into a restaurant parking lot. A third crossed over the bike lane when turning to shop at a big-box retail store, and I hit him. Not hard, fortunately, thanks to some pretty good brakes. In seven months I was thrice in the most common vehicle-on-bike incident. “One of the most common crash types is called the ‘right hook,’” Tim Bustos, executive director of the Florida Bicycle Association, told me in a phone conversation. That is a vehicle turning right turns right on, or onto the path of, a bicycle. Bustos, by the way, is a bit of a bicycle-collision expert. In his work for the West Florida Regional Planning Council, Pensacola, and later a California city, he’s analyzed hundreds of bicycle collisions, and bicyclist deaths. Every year about 700 bicyclists are killed in traffic accidents nationwide. Florida accounts for almost 100 of those annual deaths, making the Sunshine State the bicyclist death capital. Bustos said there are a number of reasons for that. One is simply that Florida’s temperate climate allows for 12 months of riding, giving cars and bikes more chances to fatally interact. But there’re other reasons. A lack of, or resistance to, driver
Staff photo by Patrick McCallister A perfect pass. The driver moved to the far side of his lane to give a bicycle plenty of safety space. Florida law requires drivers to give bicyclists a minimum of 3-foot clearance when passing. Me, too. But, never before I started riding around the Treasure Coast. There might be a reason for that. Earlier this month, the Bill Bone law firm released a study it commissioned examining driver knowledge about and attitudes toward bicycle road rules. About 16 percent of respondents said that bicycles simply don’t belong on roads. “The majority of the respondents who believe that cyclists should remain on the sidewalks came from the South Florida region, highlighting a lack of education about cyclists and their rights on the road,” the study reads.

voter services.” The new app is, for now, just for those with the iOS, Apple’s iPhones and iPads. Davis said versions for Android and Windows will follow. Davis said that supervisors must keep pace with how people are getting and sharing information. Today that means mobile devices. The app is free. Within about 24 hours of its rollout, nearly 50 had downloaded it. Davis was one of the first. “(Users) can update their address, locate their polling precincts and access voting dates,” she said. “They can request to vote by mail. When the time comes and we have a sample ballot, they can view their sample ballot.” Users can also use the app to get a map to the supervisor’s office. Oh, and a poll worker application. Bird wasn’t available for comment. Debbie Dent, chief deputy, said Bird was excited to unveil the app. “He was very enthusiastic about the way technology is moving and he wanted to do something no one else is doing,” she said. “The easier it is for someone to access their information, the better off we all are.” Among other things, the app will let users track their absentee bal-
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com lots when they opt to use those. It takes away any wonder whether an absentee ballot arrived at the supervisor’s office and got counted. People’s signature often change with age, and that sometimes causes doubt about absentee ballots. Davis said the mobile app users will have a chance to know whether their ballots are among those pulled aside for evaluation. “(A different signature) would be marked as an error in the system and the voter would have that information before their ballot goes before the canvassing board,” she said. Voters can appear before canvassing boards to defend their ballots. “As far as users, the target market is going to be the younger voter,” Davis said. “We’ll be marketing it when we go to our high school campuses.” So, does the supervisor think folks will be voting by phone soon? “I don’t think it will be quite that soon that we’re voting over the Internet or smart phone, but in time, yes,” she said. “I think that’s the way voting will move.” The county has about 101,920 voters. To get the app, visit the Apple App Store and search Martin Votes. For more about the app call the supervisor’s office at (772) 288-5637.

Sidewalks are no place for bicycles. Riding a bicycle on Florida roadways is not only a legal right — versus being a temporary privilege for operating a motorized vehicle — it’s an obligation. Riding on sidewalks is illegal. It’s also dangerous, Bustos said. Sidewalk riding is a leading cause of that “right hook.” Other leading causes are driver and bicyclist distractions, and hurrying. Hardcore riders aren’t going to give up our beloved bicycling. Children and youths aren’t going to give up the pre-16 freedom of riding. Some simply can’t afford cars and need to get to work and shopping somehow. Others have lost the privilege of operating motorized vehicles on the roadways. Bikes aren’t going away, and they belong on roads. Every time you grab a steering wheel, you’re taking others’ lives into your hands. Literally. Bicyclists have obligations to ride safely and legally — preferably with helmets. Drivers have obligations to give them proper deference and abide by the state’s 3-foot law. And for goodness’ sake, look right, really look right, before turning.

TREASURE COAST — Will Weatherford, Speaker of the Florida House, was flooded with Lake Okeechobee, the C-44 Canal, St. Lucie River, and Indian River Lagoon. On Monday, Nov. 11, Sen. Joe Negron, Palm City, gave Weatherford an extensive tour of area waterways damaged by massive releases of water from Lake Okeechobee over the summer. The tour was an unsubtle sales pitch to get the speaker to back recommendations in the Florida Senate Select Committee on Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee Basin report. The committee released the report on Nov. 5. Those recommendations have a $220 million price attached to them. “He gave us a chance to make

our case and it’s our responsibility to meet the burden of proof to get the funding in the session,” Negron said in an interview after the tour. That burden of proof will have a lot of competitors in the upcoming 60-day session of the Florida Legislature, which will convene on March 4. Those competitors include Weatherford, Wesley Chapel, backing of Gov. Rick Scott’s proposal to cut the state budget by $100 million as part of a plan to reduce taxes by about $500 million. “It was a great day for the Treasure Coast to personally show the speaker what’s happened to the community, because of these discharges,” Negron said. “I’m very optimistic we’ll be given every opportunity to make our case.”

TOUR from page A14 The report recommends, among other things, elevating portions of the Tamianmi Trail, State Road 90, to allow for more southern flow of water to reduce the need for Lake Okeechobee discharges into eastern and western canals. Additionally, the committee recommended expanding funding for reservoirs to reduce sediments and nutrients before water heads to the St. Lucie and Indian rivers. During Weatherford’s visit, he met with local elected officials and waterway advocates.
“It’s not a silver bullet,” Donald Voss, founder of Marine Cleanup Initiative, told Weatherford. “It’s all these bullets.” Representative MaryLynn “ML” Magar, Tequesta, told Weatherford it was important for the Florida House to back all the reports proposals, including one for the state to buy land for the Army Corps of Engineers to use for settling water before it goes down canals toward the Indian River “I’ve seen the degradation (of local waterways) over many, many years,” she said. “We need to buy the land and they need to fund

The United Way of Martin County is asking Treasure Coast residents and businesses adversely affected by last summer’s massive water releases from Lake Okeechobee to complete an online survey. “We looked at it as more than an environmental issue,” Jim Vojc-
sik, executive director, said. “We looked at it as an economic issue, a health issue.” The United Way hopes to get at least 100 competed surveys. 12-week cycle, the two will have monthly meetings with participants for a few months to monitor progress. They aim to roll out an anti-diabetes program throughout the Treasure Coast Y’s facilities next spring. “(Type 2 diabetes) is a major health risk,” Tsarnas said. “It’s one of the major health risks in the country. Now we’re seeing it in children.” Harvey and Tsarnas have been nurse practitioners for 16 years. Both have worked in medicine for about 30 years. They said there’s a simple reason type 2 diabetes is ascending. They’ve been weighing people for a long
time and have watched average waist sizes grow. “It’s something like 38 percent of the population is obese,” Tsarnas said. Not overweight. Obese. While there’s no hard line between the two, in general a person is counted as obese if his or her body-mass index exceeds 24.9 and the individual has a body fat percentage that exceed healthy norms — about 20 percent for men and 25 for women. Those with a BMI between 23 and 24.9 are generally considered overweight if they exceed

It never occurred to her that type 2 diabetes was a preventable disease that can have catastrophic consequences. The 61-year-old’s brother, Phillip, lost toes to the disease, and was getting close to losing a foot. Still didn’t scare her. He died of unrelated causes before the amputation. “There was also cancer in the family,” Bartholomew said. “It just wasn’t going to happen to me.” Then her younger sister, Rita, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Everything changed. She’d done research and found out just how bad the disease could be and shared it all with the family. So Bartholomew jumped on it when she got the chance to participate in the second phase of a Volunteers in Medicine Clinic, Stuart, diabetes prevention and treatment study at the YMCA of the Treasure Coast. Too much weight can cause type 2 diabetes. Losing it can help reverse the disorder. Nurse practitioners Kathi Harvey and Betty Tsarnas are

Toys for Tots seeking help for families in need TREASURE COAST — “Merry Christmas,” the girl called to the Marine Corps veteran. Nathaniel Wells was unloading some late Toys for Tots donations at his home when a woman and young girl passed by. It was Christmas afternoon. He replied the holiday greeting to the lass, and asked what Santa had given her. Turned out that a walk with Mom was pretty much her Christmas present that year. Oh, no, not on Wells’ watch. “I had a bicycle perfect for her

size,” Wells said. He’d find out that it was the first bike the girl would ever own. Wells pressed and found out the woman had five children. None was getting tangible presents that year. “I loaded up a big bag of toys for them,” he said. “I asked where they lived. They lived two blocks away from me.” Wells was glad he was able to make a family’s Christmas. But he’d end up getting the biggest gift that day. Santa had a surprise for him. With a voice rich

in emotion, he described the moment. “The little girl said, ‘Mister, can I pray for you?’ Wells said. He paused, audibly gathering himself. “She thanked God for a man she’d never met before.” Wells is the coordinator for the Toys for Tots in St. Lucie County. All along the Treasure Coast, Toys for Tots is looking for donations, volunteers, and collection sites. On Saturday, Nov. 23, volunteers and employees from Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accept toy donations at the St. Lucie County Emergency Operations Center, 15305 Midway Road, Fort Pierce. The donation collection is more than just an exercise in good cheer. It’s also points-of-distribution practice for St. Lucie’s and Indian River’s emergency-management teams, the American Red Cross of the Treasure Coast, and Florida Department of Health agencies in Martin and St. Lucie. Wells said every year there seems to be more families who need help giving their children a Christmas. “I do remember us serving more than 5,000 children (last year),” he said. “That’s the number that
sticks out to me.” Wells works with the Marine Corps League’s Jack Ivy Detachment, 666, to coordinate Toys for Tots. He said there are more than 100 locations to donate toys in St. Lucie this year. Most of the collected toys will be given to families through local social-service agencies. However, for the second year, the St. Lucie County Toys for Tots is taking some direct requests for toys through the Harvest Food & Outreach Center, 2520 Orange Ave., Fort Pierce. “Those individuals arrange a time to come pick up their toys,” Wells said. Nationally, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is directed by the Commander of the Marine Forces Reserve. However, the toy drives and distribution are local campaigns that may or may not involve Marines, or Marine Corps veterans. The foundation designates coordinators for local campaigns. Carol Hodnett, United Way of Martin County, is the coordinator for Martin. She was unavailable for comment by press time. However, Jim Vojcsik, executive director, said the local United Way has

organized the toy drive for about 10 years. “It’s about 1,200 families a year, which equates to about 3,000 children for the Toys for Tots,” he said. Martin, which has about 160 drop-off locations, is unusual in the way it distributes donated toys. Partner agencies refer screened families to the United Way program. The United Way gives them appointments to select appropriate toys at a temporary shop. “The toys are set up on tables by age group,” Vojcsik said. “The families are pre-screened. They’re given a time. A volunteer goes along with each one of the participants. They actually get to select the toys for their children. It’s a dignified way to do it.” Recipient families are able to select one large and two small toys for each child. Additionally, they can get unlimited stocking stuffers. Along with the toys, families will receive food raised by area Boy Scouts through the recent Scouting for Food drive. “This year, they collected 16,000 pounds of food for us,” Vojcsik said. So, how’d Toys for Tots, one of America’s most venerated charities, get started? Back in the ‘40s, Maj. Bill Hendricks was a Marine Corps reservist looking forward to Christmas like everyone else. His wife, Diane, made a doll and asked him to find a charity that’d give it to a girl for Christmas. He found none, so Hendricks did what any good Marine would. He organized a group of Marine Corps reservists to become Santa’s helpers. They collected and gave out about 5,000 toys in 1947. But mighty as Marines are in getting missions accomplished, Hendricks was also the Director of Public Relations at Warner Brothers Studios. He used the position to get some star power behind the novel project. Few remember that Walt Disney designed the Toys for Tots logo

Marine Corps reservists used drill weekends to collect and distribute toys from 1948 to 1979. The Total Force Program introduced in the late ‘70s reduced the drill time the Marines could commit to toy collection and distribution. By 1991, with the Secretary of Defense’s blessing, the Marine Corps officially recognized the Toys for Tots Foundation to carry on the annual work. Collection boxes crop up around late October, and stay up until near Christmas. Wells said coordinators and volunteers appreciate anything people donate, but he had some suggestions. “Each year we run short in the age group of the older girls, the young teens,” he said. “Both boys and girls, but we tend to run out of girls (items) before the boys.” So, toys for young teens. Mostly for the girls, thank you. Then there’s the little, little ones: infants and toddlers. “We tend to never have enough for some reason,” Wells said. So, add infants and toddlers to the need-donations list. “One of the things people love to purchase — we’re always in an abundance of — is the 4 to 6 age group,” Wells said. “The baby dolls. When we’re down to the bones of donations, my walls are pink.” And stuffed animals? “We get gobs and gobs,” Wells said. “We twist people’s arms to take stuffed toys.” To find out about donating to or volunteering for Toys for Tots in either St. Lucie or Martin, visit toysfortots.org. started taking your RMDs? Throughout your career, you have been working hard to save in one or more retirement accounts. Then, once you retire, you’ll have some new decisions to make. But one choice has already been made for you: the age at which you must start taking withdrawals, or “distributions.” It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with these distribution rules because they can have a big impact on your retirement income. And you may even want to take action before the end of the year.

Correction
In the Nov. 15 edition, Your Voice News & Views mistakenly attributed statements St. Lucie County commissioner Paula Lewis made to Frannie Hutchinson. Hutchinson voted to withdraw St. Lucie County from the Southeast Florida Regional Partnership and its end product, the Seven50 Southeast Florida Prosperity Plan. That was at a special meeting on Thursday, Nov. 7. Your Voice regrets the error.
Here, in a nutshell, is the story: Once you reach age 70½, you must begin taking taxable withdrawals — known as “required minimum distributions,” or RMDS — from your traditional IRA and most other retirement plans, such as a 401(k) plan, a 403(b) plan or a 457(b) plan. A Roth IRA, however, is not subject to RMDs. If you turned 70½ in 2013, you may want to take your first RMD no later than Dec. 31. You could wait until April 1, 2014, to take your initial distribution, but you’d then have to take your next one by Dec. 31, 2014 — and two distributions in one year could have a sizable impact on your taxes. After you’ve taken your first RMD, you’ll have to take one by Dec.31 of each calendar year for the rest of your life — or until your account balance is zero. These minimum distributions are calculated annually based on your age, account balance at the end of the previous year, marital status and spouse’s age. If you do not meet the annual minimum distribution, you may be subject to a 50 percent penalty on your underpayment, plus ordinary income tax as the funds are withdrawn. Of course, while you have to take at least the minimum distribution from your retirement plans, you can always take more — but should you? There’s no one “right answer” for everyone. Obviously, if you need the money, you may have to go beyond
the minimum when taking distributions. But if you have enough income from other sources — such as investments in other accounts, Social Security and even earnings from a part-time job — you may want to stick with the minimum distributions and leave your retirement accounts as intact as possible for as long as possible, thereby allowing them to potentially continue growing on a tax-deferred basis. Whatever your decision, you’ll want to allow sufficient time to determine the size and timing of your RMDs, because if you have several retirement accounts, you may need to make some choices. For example, if you have more than one IRA, you can add the RMDS and take the combined distribution amount from any one — or more — of your IRAs. And if you have more than one 401(k), you must calculate your RMDs separately for each plan. To help ensure you’re doing things “by the book,” consult with your tax and financial advisors before you start taking your RMDs. You work hard to build your retirement plans. So, when it’s time to start tapping into them, you’ll want to make the right moves.

DIABETES from page A17 the healthy body fat percentages. The normal BMI is 18.5 to 22.9 Bartholomew said her husband, Chet, and she both have weight problems. She joked that it was due to his good culinary skills. “If he was going to eat, I was going to eat,” she said. “We didn’t go out much, because we couldn’t afford to. We used (eating) for entertainment.” She said they’d intermittently go on health and fitness starts. Sometimes together. Other times, individually. Either way, Bartholomew said her husband and she often inadvertently under-
mine one another’s health and fitness motivation and progress. Bartholomew lost 20 pounds in the first 10 weeks of the study. And she has a motive to keep it off. Her diabetes is now manageable with just exercise and diet — no more metformin if she keeps at it. Harvey said part of the study was giving participants discounted YMCA memberships. Part of the reason for that is because, she said, going to the Y forges exercise friendships that help offset other pressures to give up on health and fitness goals. She said participants in the first study got free memberships.
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com
“What we learned from the pilot (study) is they do better if they have some skin in the game,” Harvey said. She said the second, current, study started with 22. Two dropped out. In addition to a weekly exercise class followed by health-maintenance instruction, participants must go to the Y on their own, too. Harvey said the weekly class and small financial investment motivates more exercise in short order. “Our original requirement was 120 minutes a week,” Harvey said. “Most (participants) are over 300 to 600 minutes a week.” The researchers can track this, because the YMCA uses swipe cards that keep track of users’ times at its facilities. Bartholomew isn’t the only one losing weight in the study. “Our biggest loser is Gabriel,” Harvey said. “He’s 28 pounds (in 10 weeks.)” The American Diabetes Association declared November as American Diabetes Month. The association reports that about 26 million Americans have di-
abetes. Another 79 million are at risk for developing type 2. If current trends continue, about a third of Americans could have diabetes by 2050. In addition to being the leading cause of kidney failure, diabetes is the largest cause of new blindness among adults. Warning signs include fatigue, sudden weight loss that can’t be attributed to lifestyle changes, an uptick in hunger or thirst, and frequent urination. Tsarnas said diabetes is often similar to the proverbial frog in boiling water. Frogs, according to one hypothesis, will immediately leap out if tossed into a boiling pot, but will stay until death if placed in water that’s brought to a boil. “(Type 2 diabetes patients) have no idea how bad they feel until we get their sugar under control,” she said. The YMCA of the Treasure Coast has facilities in Martin and St. Lucie counties. The Stuart facility is at 2700 Willoughby Blvd. The St. Lucie facility is at 1301 S.W. Bayshore Blvd. More about the Y is at ymcatreasurecoast.org.

When your reputation precedes you, and it’s good, that’s a good thing. So when I mentioned to several friends that I’d had dinner at Spoto’s recently, I got “Yeah, that’s a great place – been to the one in Palm Beach Gardens,” and “Oh my god – I love that restaurant!” and “… used to hang out at the one in downtown West Palm …” And one said, “I know John Spoto personally – he runs a nice place …” I had, of course, already dined at the newest location in Stuart, so I knew what my friends were talking about. John, the owner, stopped by our table several times to chat and check on us, as he did with every table in the place. Pure class. research. Apparently, oyster lovers should know that Wellfleet oysters, for example, grow in cold waters and taste much like what they consume, which is healthy, clean-water phytoplankton. The website, wellfleetoysterfest.org, says “wellfleet oysters tend to be long and strong-shelled. Experienced tasters know that they are plump and clean with a distinctively good balance of creamy sweetness and brine.” “And high salinity. The salinity in Wellfleet Harbor is also relatively high (28 parts per thousand) compared to the more brackish waters of, for example, upper Chesapeake Bay. Experienced tasters find that oysters that grow in saltier waters tend to have a cleaner, sharper flavor.” While my companion was enjoying the oyster sampler platter, I dove into the Asian Pot Stickers, a delightful combination of chicken, carrots, garlic and onion wrapped in a light pastry, served with a soy and sesame seed dipping sauce ($6.75). Barber spoke recently about the upcoming concert and his work with Artists for a Cause, the group he founded to help performing and visual artists use their art to improve the community while earning a sustainable living. Barber has performed at the Lyric, but this is the first time he has produced his own show. “I’ll be incorporating some of the area’s best artists,” he said. “They’re the cream of the crop and deserve to be featured. SPOTO’S from page B3 and hot towels, for us to cleanse our hands between dishes. I haven’t had such personal attention since the one and only time I’ve flown first-class. Very nice touch … After cleansing our hands, Amedeo brought us a dish of Thai mussels, served with coconut milk, lemongrass and curry – tender and tasty. In the meantime, the 10 or so managers on duty (OK, maybe it just seemed like 10) came by to check on us. Somewhere in the middle of all this, Amedeo brought us bouillabaisse, a Spanish seafood-stew
favorite of lobster, clams, and fresh fish of the day, in a tomato-based broth. The finale was a surf-and-turf dish: macadamia nut-encrusted mahi mahi and a 7-ounce cut of ribeye steak, served with potatoes au gratin and my very favorite vegetable in the world – asparagus, cooked exactly as it’s supposed to be: al dente, so you can sink your teeth into it and savor the flavor. Alas, all good things must come to an end. I folded the 11 x 17 double-sided menu and tucked it in my purse, which Amedeo explained changes daily, depending on

FEATURING PIES
dancers from the Preston Contemporary Dance Theatre will be performing one piece. There will be two young operatic sopranos, Savanna Webber and Sydney Carbo. They’re outstanding. We’ll do a funny song that’s usually a solo, but we’re making it a trio. It’s based on something Placido Domingo did. He’s one of my heroes. He starred at an opera at the Met I was in. “Talia Suskauer and I will do a duet, the Pink song, “Just Give Me a Reason;” Christina Regan will do a set from Queen and play the oboe and piano. Timothy Nicholas will play the violin and Megan Savage will play the cello. Jennifer Jones of StarStruck Performing Arts Center is staging several of the pieces.” Barber is so excited about the young performers that he almost forgets to discuss his own program. He will sing some works that he presented during his country-wide tour last year, “Classical for Everyone.” “There will be favorite things from my tour and some pieces I’m trying out for future tours,” he said. “I’ve been offered another tour for 2015-2016. This is my home base. I want them to be the first to hear things I’m trying out. Since its Dec. 1, there will be holiday favorites, including “O, Holy

Night” and “Ave Maria.” One of the most important elements in any Barber concert is the melding of the classical and popular. “I want to reach everyone but still have some classical elements,” he said. “The Queen set will have the cello, violin and piano. Even though it’s Freddy Mercury, they’ll be classical elements. One of the approaches I have is to oppose the classical etiquette which makes us think that this art is for someone else. It’s breaking down barriers. (Classical) is the root of all the other music that they love. I treat audiences as if they’re in the living room. It would be impossible to conclude an interview with Terry Barber without mentioning Artists for a Cause. Barber has taken a year off from touring to devote his time to serving as the executive director of the organization he founded and nurtured. The Dance for Food program, a free hour of contemporary dance, has several more performances, including one Nov. 22 at South Fork High school. Donated food can be dropped off at the event or at several area locations. Financial contributions are also welcome. For now, Barber is thinking ahead to Dec. 1

lies or friends to remember them with even a token item, or even a Christmas card. Dr. Frenkel called the Center and was told, indeed, this was true, and they would love to partner with someone who could bring some happiness into the lives of the seniors there who were often forgotten at Christmas time. The Center identified seven seniors who could use modest items. Dr. Frenkel, his staff, and patients collected those items and more and delivered them. On Dec. 26, Dr. Frenkel received a note from the Kane Center — it read: “Five mornings a week shortly before 9 a.m., Anne eats breakfast with seven other seniors at the same round table at the adult day program run by the Council on Aging in the Kane Center. On this day after Christmas, Anne describes her holiday … “It was quiet,” Anne said. “My 31-year-old grandson is unemployed and has moved back home. And, my daughter is afraid she’s going to be laid off. So, no presents this year.” But, one of the seniors at the table notices Anne is wearing a new, warm sweater. “Oh, this is from my friend,” Anne smiles and wraps her arms around herself in a hug. “I’ve never felt any sweater that’s this soft.”
How things feel is important to Anne since she has lost most of her vision. And, this gift of a sweater, as well as other gifts contributed by you and your patients, made a difference to our seniors. Thanks for once again being their true friends for the holidays.” At that moment, Dr. Frenkel decided that this would be done each year, and we would continue to send out our SOS for SSS — Secret Santas for Seniors. The second year our list of deserving seniors grew to over 70, and this year it is over 130 seniors throughout Martin County. We are so proud of our staff, our patients and the community for coming forward and providing items for the seniors, some of whom would have very little, if anything for the holidays. This year we are in dire need of tote bags, hand towels and blankets for the seniors. Other needed items include toiletries for both men and women, socks, shirts and sweaters, in all sizes. We appreciate all the help we get and this year there will be a small party at noon, Dec. 2 at the office with refreshments for those who choose to stop by and bring some items, who knows, Santa himself may arrive! Please bring any donations to East Florida Eye Institute, 509 Riverside Drive, Ste. 302, Stuart, on the Martin Memorial North Hospital grounds.
