White Doves fly high for the children
Scouts trim the trees

MARTIN COUNTY — It was a scene straight out of the North Pole. Minus the snow and the frigid temperatures, countless “elves” were frantically shuffling around picking out toys for children on Santa’s “nice” list. On Dec. 18 and 19 at the Martin County Fairgrounds, nearly 300 volunteers, or in this case Santa’s helpers, distributed approximately 13,000 toys and 42,000 pounds of food for close to 3,000 needy area children and their families through the White Doves Holiday Project. In advance of this two-day, free “shop-a-thon”, toys were sorted and categorized by age group. When their assigned times came, qualifying families who were referred to benefit from the overwhelming kindness of the Martin County community were led through buildings on the fairgrounds property – temporarily doubling as Santa’s workshop – and selected holiday gifts for their children.

PALM CITY — Girl Scouts trimmed the trees for area families. For the sixth year Pinder’s Nursery, 5500 S.W. Martin Highway, hosted its annual Girl Scouts tree display and giveaway. Ten troops participated this year. “These 10 trees go to 10 needy
families in Martin County,” Meg Seman, organizer, said. The troops gathered the weekend after Thanksgiving to decorate trees donated by Pinder’s. The scouts supplied the decorations, ranging from the traditional to the innovative. One tree celebrating pet ownership included a dog treat garland. That was a smash with raccoons, unfortunately, and Pinder’s had to remove the garland, but was
able to display the tree with the animal toys turned holiday ornaments. For almost three weeks shoppers and visitors voted for their favorites. This year almost 500 voted, nearly 100 more than last year. The winning tree was Under the Sea by Girl Scout Troop 30290. The trees went to families suggested by the Children’s

PALM CITY — She’s remembered by some as Golden Gate Kate, and others as Palm City Parmelee. Kate Parmelee heads up the county’s new office of community and strategic partnerships, which is taking over administration of the county’s seven community redevelopment areas from the now defunct community redevelopment department. Parmelee met with the Old Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee at its last regular meeting, Dec. 16. “I know there’s a lot of uncertainty right now, and we’re awaiting (Martin County Commission) direction,” she said at the meeting. Parmelee has been the county’s intergovernmental and grants coordinator for several years. She returned to Martin County in 2008 after completing studies at the University of Florida as she worked in community redevelopment for Gainesville. She’d started her career in Martin County and helped create

PALM CITY — There are many sources of inspiration for a writer. Sometimes it is an event in their lives or in the news. Other times, it’s a snippet of conversation that sets the imagination off. For D.A. Squires, the inspiration came in the form of a stuffed animal, a blue and gold macaw that was given to her when her daughter was born. At first, he hung over the crib, and later, the two would imagine what the bird, named Taco, would say. Squires began thinking about a book with an anthropomorphic bird who would be a companion to an orphan living with her grandmother. Central to the plot would be time travel, an idea that fascinated Squires. “I had the beginning and the ending,” Squires said, “I wrote 12 chapters.” They lay unfinished while Squires worked and raised her family. “Several years ago, my daughter went to college and one night, my husband said, ‘You know that story? I think you should go back to it.’” I took my husband’s challenge and sat down and started writing. It took a year and a half
to write the remaining 50 plus chapters.” The result is “The Time Seekers,” more than 500 pages of adventure, time travel and even a trip to a Salem Witch Trial. The book is available at Amazon.com and was published by Squires. “I wanted to keep control, so I self-published,” she said. “I wanted complete control over the art. I feel there is a wonderful accessibility to writers who aspire to be published and can’t get to New York. There are avenues for writers to publish stories. I used one through Amazon. I had two or three editors proofread it and I used the best artist I could find.” The artist, Kelly Arnold, is a well-known area artist. “She’s a genius,” Squires said. “She did all of the art. She’s a fine artist. I wanted someone highly talented. I wanted almost Audubon quality work.” The story has two birds, the macaw named Taco and a raven named Noir. “Noir is the dark side,” Squires said. “He only speaks French. It adds an element of interest and (may) inspire people to look up what it means. In this country, we are not doing what we could to introduce new languages to

DOVES from page 1 “This project is one of the only projects in Martin County that brings the entire community together,” said Carol Hodnett, Vice President, Community Impact and Martin Volunteers for United Way of Martin County. “United Way is the local coordinating organization for Toys for Tots. We are amazed by the generosity of the Martin County residents and our volunteers. “The thing that is unique about this is that the families get to select the toys for their children.” In addition to the Stuart location, the program was duplicated on the same dates in Indiantown. Organized by United Way of Martin County’s Martin Volunteers program, White Doves relies on the compassion of donors and volunteers to see that thousands of local children can wake up Christmas morning with presents under the tree or even a shiny new bicycle. Each year in fall, United Way works with nonprofit agencies, faith-based organizations and schools to identify families in need. Referrals are then carefully checked with other service providers to avoid client duplication before being approved. As the local Toys for Tots coordinating organization, United Way collects toys for children with the
help of more than 150 businesses and community locations serving as official Toys for Tots drop-off locations. “We work with local businesses, schools and families to collect toys” said Nancy McCarthy, United Way of Martin County Director of Marketing and Communications. “This really is a community event. The whole community comes together---the schools, businesses, families, churches, volunteers, etc. It’s incredible to see the breadth of everybody coming together.” According to Hodnett, White Doves began in 1988. The Holiday Project, which helped about 300 families back in the early years, now assists more than 1,300 families today. She said the project really expanded in 1990 when United Way took over the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. “Martin County is a generous community and the spirit of giving is strong year-round,” said Jim Vojcsik, President/CEO, United Way of Martin County. “The number of businesses and organizations participating in the toy drive has grown substantially over the years. “White Doves is a volunteer-driven project that engages the entire community: businesses, non-profit organizations, gov-

It takes all of us working together to make a collective impact that lifts our community.” And lift the community it does, according to Hodnett. “The families are grateful for the support because it gives them hope that there are people in this world who care,” said Hodnett. “At United Way, we’re focused on providing donors and volunteers with opportunities to make an impact in the community and this project would not be possible if not for their continued support.
We’re locally owned and operated, and we’ve been earning trust with expert cooling and electrical service since 1988. Sound like your kind of company?
“Several of the White Doves volunteers have been involved with the project for 20 or more years. Each year, they return because they derive satisfaction from knowing they are making the lives of children a little bit brighter during the holidays.” About a week earlier, on Saturday, Dec. 12, several members of the Martin County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics Union gathered at the fairgrounds to assemble more than

Holiday spending, teach children about money
D
uring this holiday season, you’ll likely be spending money, in various amounts and in various ways. And you can use this experience to teach your children about money management. Here are a few ideas for doing just that: •Stick to a budget. Tell your children you’ve set aside a certain amount of money for gifts and holiday events, such as hosting parties, and that you won’t exceed it. And if you have saved money throughout the year in a special holiday fund, let your kids know about that, too. This information should help impress upon them the importance of sticking with a budget and saving for a goal. •Discuss credit and debt. Ideally, you won’t have to use your credit cards to an unusual degree during the holiday season. If you do, though, explain to your children that using a credit card is not the same thing as “free” money, and that your goal is to pay off the card as soon as possible, so that you won’t have to pay
even more for your purchases in the form of interest payments. •Compare short- and long-term goals. Explain to your children that your holiday spending is the result of having saved for, and met, a short-term goal, but that you are also saving for longterm goals, such as retirement.
Letter to the Editor: Please allow me to introduce myself to you. I am Larry Green, candidate for Martin County School Board, District 5. Presently, I serve as the Principal of Pinewood Elementary School. I was born 59 years ago in Chelsea, Massachusetts, a small city across the Mystic River from Boston. I have lived in Martin
County since 1978. My father was a teacher for 39 years. When I told him I wanted to enter the field of education he told me that I would never be financially rich, but I could still be wealthy. At the time, I was unsure of what he meant. But I surely know now, I “am” truly a wealthy man. The Martin County School

Depending on the age of your kids, you might want to go into somewhat more detail, such as describing, in general terms, the different ways you save for the different goals. For example, for your holiday spending, you might be drawing on money from your checking account – or, as mentioned above, a holiday fund, possibly kept in a low-risk, liquid vehicle – while for your long-term goals, you might be relying in part on your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k). The key point to get across is that you have various financial goals in life with various means of working toward achieving them. •Introduce your children to investing. If you’ve already brought up the topic of saving for longterm goals, why not take it a step further and give your children
District has given me 38 fantastic years. I have been blessed with thousands of students who I have been able to educate. They have made me a wealthy man. My wife has been a teacher in Martin County for 29 years, and my children are both products of the Martin County School System. As you can see, I have a stake in this system. I truly believe in the Martin County Schools. I am retiring in the spring of 2016, for me, running for School Board is a natural progression. My campaign theme is —“Unfinished Business.” I can hit the ground running. I have been attending school board meetings for over 20 years, so for me, there is no learning curve. The children of Martin County do not have the time to wait for two school board members to be trained in the workings of the board. For me, this will not be a part time job. Let me bring forward my four point platform. Testing: Yes, there is a need for testing. The public demands accountability and we do need something that is standardized to measure how much our children are learning. That said, we need a valid instrument and we
a doorway into the investment world? Specifically, consider giving them a few shares of stock, possibly in companies with which they are already familiar, and help them follow these stocks. One way of giving stocks to children is through a custodial account, which can be opened under the Uniform Transfer to Minors Act (UTMA) or the Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA). Keep in mind, though, that once your child reaches the age of majority – usually 18 or 21 – he or she gets full control of the money in the account. Plus, your gift is irrevocable. •Be generous. If you’re going to make charitable gifts, let you kids know about it – or even let them help pick the charities. It will show them that one purpose of wealth accumulation is to give back to the world. Jamie Chapogas is a financial advisor with Edward Jones, 2900 S.W. Town Center Way in Palm City. For more information on this topic, a free portfolio review or to request her as a guest speaker, call (772) 463-7189. need to decrease the amount of testing. First, we need to make sure that the Florida Standard Assessment (FSA) is a valid instrument to measure our students’ level of achievement. As far as the amount of testing, last year, the legislators put a 5 percent cap on testing. Translated, that means that no more than 39 hours of instructional time could be used for testing. That is far too much time and that is what I told lawmakers when I traveled to Tallahassee last year for Legislative Days to lobby for education causes. My recommendation is to cut that amount to no more than 2 percent of instructional time. Once again, I will be traveling to Tallahassee in January to fight for our education causes! Standards and standard based grading: In actuality, I don’t think the concept of a common set of standards that are taught in all 50 states would be a bad idea. But — that is not what we have; we have the Florida Standards, which have 99 changes

GREEN from page 6 that were agreed upon by a committee of parents, educators, legislators and public. Let’s be honest, standards have been around since we were all in school, but now teachers are actually being asked to follow them. As far as standards based grading, the grading system was a flawed system that needed fixing. What I do feel is needed is additional training for our instructional staff, parents and community at large. Over time, we will find that this type of reporting system will give our parents so much more information to better assist their children succeed in school. Pay for teachers and staff: I think we need to find a way to keep the best teachers in education. In addition, we need to be able to attract quality individuals into the field. Whether we like it or not, salary may be the best way to do so. I would like to go through the budget and see how we can find a way to increase staff salaries to make them more commensurate with the jobs they do in society. Business model: Schools exist by getting their customers by default. If you live in “my zone” you come to “my school.” There seems to be no incentive to

In contrast to ‘Harry Potter,’ magic is not the main character. It’s a human story of perseverance, forgiveness and redemption. Kids have to use resourcefulness and make decisions. D.A. Squires is pleased that many adults enjoy it, as well. Squires is now working on a new book. “There will be a sequel,” she said. “I’m writing it and I introduced it as a postscript in ‘The Time Seekers.’ I have a passion for space and space travel. When I looked at what I’d written, I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, it’s always been there. I didn’t see it.” The book is available as a paperback on Amazon.com and will be available in hard copy and on Kindle in the near future. Squires loves hearing from readers and welcomes their comments. “If you can keep readers engaged, I think you’ve accomplished something,” she said. For more information about D.A. It adds a twist to a children’s novel.” Noir enters the home where Alexandra lives and things take on an unsettling and mysterious character. “The plot is layered, with subplots,” Squires said. “There are four humans and two birds as characters. There is a magical key and a painted gate on a mural. The key opens into darkness. It allows them to travel to the beach, but they learn they’re not in the same time. They’re in the same year Alex’s parents died in an accident. At least one-third of the book is trying to figure out how to prevent their death and bring them safely through the gate.” Squires said there is science and astrophysics woven into a lot of fantasy and magic. “In contrast to ‘Harry Potter,’ magic is not the main character,” Squires said, “It’s a human story of perseverance, forgiveness and redemption. TREASURE COAST — Romance is in the air in downtown Stuart, and its sound is clip clop, clip clop, clip clop. Heather Schneider, the reigning United States Equine Federation’s National Four-in-Hand Pony Champion, is giving folks rides around Stuart. She and her husband, David, own Palm City’s Wind Chase Farm. Earlier in December, they started giving carriage tours in downtown Stuart. “David and I thought it was a good way to share our passion for horses and carriage driving with the public,” Heather said. They know lots about finding love over horses. David was at a driving competition in their native Ohio getting his ponies ready when Heather showed up a damsel in distress. Her trailer had a flat tire. David knew a lot about changing trailer tires, and offered his help. “That’s how it got going on that,” David said in a previous interview. Heather knew immediately she’d found her knight in shining armor with his regal mount. “In ‘99, we got married,” she said.
Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Heather Schneider navigates Debbie and Gator Estes of Stuart through downtown on their Clydesdale carriage ride to celebrate their anniversary. Heather and David Schneider own Wind Chase Farm in Palm City. “Shortly thereafter, we moved to Florida and started Wind Chase Farm.” At first the couple only did driving lessons, which they still do, but folks were frequently wanting to head into their newlywed lives on a carriage. Wind Chase started a hired driving service. Business has been good, but the Schneiders kept eyeing quaint Stuart. “After winning the gold medal and having the summer, we looked at
downtown Stuart and said, ‘You know, we’ve been wanting to do this,’” Heather said. So the couple approached the city with the idea of downtown carriage tours. They got a warm welcome, with a caveat. “It’s been done before,” Heather said. “They had a carriage service in town about five or seven years ago. The time wasn’t right.”

The History of New Years Celebration
The celebration of the new year on January 1st is a relatively new phenomenon. The earliest recording of a new year celebration is believed to have been in Mesopotamia, c. 2000 B.C. and was celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, in mid-March. A variety of other dates tied to the seasons were also used by various ancient cultures. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians began their new year with the fall equinox, and the Greeks celebrated it on the winter solstice. Early Roman Calendar: March 1st Rings in the New Year
January Joins the Calendar
The first time the new year was celebrated on January 1st was in Rome in 153 B.C. (In fact, the month of January did not even exist until around 700 B.C., when the second king of Rome, Numa Pontilius, added the months of January and February.) The new year was moved from March to January because that was the beginning of the civil year, the month that the two newly elected Roman consuls—the highest officials in the Roman republic—began their one-year tenure. But this new year date was not always strictly and widely observed, and the new year was still sometimes celebrated on March 1.
Julian Calendar: January 1st Officially Instituted as the New Year
In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar introduced a new, solar-based calendar that was a vast improvement on the ancient Roman calendar, which was a lunar system that had become wildly inaccurate over the years. The Julian calendar decreed that the new year would occur with January 1, and within the Roman world, January 1 became the consistently observed start of the new year.
Middle Ages: January 1st Abolished
In medieval Europe, however, the celebrations accompanying the new year were considered pagan and unchristian like, and in 567 the Council of Tours abolished January 1 as the beginning of the year. At various times and in various places throughout medieval Christian Europe, the new year was celebrated on Dec. 25, the birth of Jesus; March 1; March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation; and Easter.
Gregorian Calendar: January 1st Restored
In 1582, the Gregorian calendar reform restored January 1 as new year’s day. Although most Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar almost immediately, it was only gradually adopted among Protestant countries. The British, for example, did not adopt the reformed calendar until 1752. Until then, the British Empire —and their American colonies— still celebrated the new year in March.

The early Roman calendar designated March 1 as the new year. The calendar had just ten months, beginning with March. That the new year once began with the month of March is still reflected in some of the names of the months. September through December, our ninth through twelfth months, were originally positioned as the seventh through tenth months (septem is Latin for “seven,” octo is “eight,” novem is “nine,” and decem is “ten.”

Parmelee is heading up the county’s new office of community and strategic partnerships. It’s taking over from the defunct community redevelopment department. Commissioner John Haddox, beside Parmelee, attended the meeting to hear and discuss the committee’s concerns over the County Commission’s direction with community redevelopment in the last year.

recent proposed work on Mapp Road between Martin Downs Boulevard and Martin Highway. The County Commission nixed this project and other proposed CRA projects in May in repeated 3-2 votes. Commissioners Ed Fielding, Sarah Heard and Anne Scott voted against the projects, and commissioners John Haddox and Doug Smith voted for them. All were recommended by neighbor-

PARMELEE from page 14 hood advisory committees. What followed was a mêlée as Community Redevelopment Agency advocates and opponents squared off in dueling public comments at commission meetings. A community-redevelopment workshop in July drew hundreds. Most sported signs and buttons supporting the Community Redevelopment Agency and its projects. But the so-called Commission Majority — Fielding, Heard and Scott — rebuffed them in favor of focusing community-redevelopment efforts on implementing septic-to-sewer plans. At the heart of much CRA opposition is tax increment financing, TIF. A portion of regular county property taxes paid in a community redevelopment area is set aside for CRA projects in it. TIF is based on a formula of increasing land values since the area was established. The Old Palm City redevelopment area stretches along Mapp from Martin Downs to All American boulevards, east to the St. Lucie River, with a western extension along Martin Highway to High Meadow Avenue. The redevelopment area was established in 2003 and its TIF fund has about $1.4 million. The Commission Majority is eyeing using that $1.4 million to help
residents in Old Palm City pay for hooking up to the new county sewage service when it’s available. Palm City has almost 1,100 septic tanks to remove, according to the report done by Public Resources Management Group. At the advisory committee meeting, member Rex Sentell said there’s lingering resentment over the commission nixing a CRA Mapp Road redevelopment plan, but weeks later adopting another crafted by the engineering department without community involvement as the commission poises to spend the TIF funds on septic-to-sewer. “Mapp Road, that’s one of the focuses we’ve had since the beginning and it keeps getting shifted around,” he said at the meeting. Parmelee said the commission will have another community-redevelopment workshop, likely in February. She said after that there will likely be clearer direction for the community redevelopment areas. Additionally, the county is in the process of adding staff to the new office. “Right now, I’m trying to learn as much as I can,” Parmelee said. Parmelee told the neighborhood advisory committee that she’ll urge the county’s engineering staff to attend the next meeting, Jan. 18, to discuss its Mapp Road project and get community comments.

Joe Catrambone “Another month, another record for Florida’s resurgent economy, with job openings at an all-time high. Businesses in Florida are growing, families are back to work, and it’s a great time to be living and working in the Sunshine State,” said Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Executive Director Jesse Panuccio. The top occupation in demand continues to be registered nurses. Job demand was highest in the large metro cities, including Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, and Fort Lauderdale. “We here in the Treasure Coast Region can’t compete with those areas; however we are in the same situation. The common thread amongst our members is the inability to hire qualified personnel. We have had members, especially in the building and trades industry report they are turning away new business due to lack of their workforce,” said Stuart/Martin Chamber of Commerce President, Joe Catrambone.

ARTIN COUNTY — Florida’s job growth since the recession has been unprecedented. Since December 2010, 978,800 private sector jobs have been created. When December 2015 job numbers are released, the total of net new jobs in Florida is expected to reach 1 million. In addition, the state’s year over job growth rate has steadily risen to 3.0 percent, which tops the nation among the 10 largest states. Despite the creation of so many new jobs, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity reports that 299,530 jobs went unfilled last month, a growing trend that indicates a significant gap between job demand and the talent available. With 2 million more jobs needed in Florida by 2030, how can we ensure tomorrow’s workforce has the skills and training to fill the jobs of the future? In November, Florida’s number of job openings was at the highest level in a decade, with a total of nearly 300,000 job openings across the state, according to Help Wanted OnLine. Recently, Governor Rick Scott said, “I am proud to announce that the number of job openings in Florida is at its highest level in a decade. We are working to cut $1 billion in taxes and create the new Florida Enterprise Fund this year to help small businesses and diversify our economy in order to grow even more jobs. Florida is leading all large states in job growth and we will keep working every day to be first for jobs.” Job demand in Florida increased by 19,272 openings in Nov. to 299,530 in Dec.This is an increase of 6.9 percent, while national growth only increased by 4.3 percent last month.

Community making holidays bright
MARTIN COUNTY — The Treasure Coast community is helping to make the holidays brighter this season for abused, abandoned and neglected children served by Hibiscus Children’s Center. The Hibiscus “Santa’s Elves” Program works closely with our generous community to collect and organize toys and gifts to fill children’s wish lists for Christmas. Co-chairs Barbara James, Carol Heenan and Shelley Hyatt are spearheading this special holiday program for the children living at the Hibiscus Shelter in Jensen Beach. There is no doubt that the holiday spirit of giving and generosity is in the air and local businesses and individuals help provide memories and excitement for these children who have experienced too much tragedy in their young lives. Our community, volunteers and staff are helping to bring joy and smiles to the children’s faces on Christmas morning — what a priceless gift! Some of the wonderful holiday community partners include Saelzer / Atlas Wealth Management Group of Raymond James and Associates, who once again hosted their annual Holiday Toy Drive Reception to benefit Hibiscus Children’s Center. Many toys and gifts were collected at this lovely event for the children. New shows add fire to Lyric Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

STUART — The Lyric has added three tempestuous ladies and a Gaelic Storm to its 2015-2016 season. On Jan. 26, the group Gaelic Storm returns to the Lyric for a night of Celtic sounds mixed with rock, folk and country. The band began in 1996 when four guys met at an Irish pub in Santa Monica, California. They began blending Scottish and Irish tunes with pop music and developed a following. In 1997, filmmaker James Cameron asked them to appear in his film, “Titanic,” and their career took off. They have recorded 10 albums and performed around the world. Gaelic Storm has two of the original members, as well as new performers including Pete Purvis, who plays everything from the uillean pipes to the tin whistle to the highland pipes. Their 2010 album, “Cabbage,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard world chart and they recently released another album, “Matching Sweaters.” Ana Popovic returns to the Lyric Jan. 30. The Serbian blues guitarist was recently nominated for her fifth Blues Music Award. Based in Memphis, Popovic was born in Belgrade to a musical
family. She began playing the guitar at 15 and her father encouraged her to turn to the blues. She formed a group that toured the former Yugoslavia. The group disbanded after Popovic entered the conservatory in Utrecht to study jazz guitar and she quickly made a name for herself on the international blues scene. Popovic’s latest album, “Blues room,” is special to her. She recorded it with her father, Milton, and it is named after the room in which he inspired her to pick up the guitar. It took 10 years to persuade her father to record with her. Popovic is already at work on her next album. Feb, 11 brings a newcomer to the Lyric. Sierra Hull is a mandolin prodigy and will perform songs from her latest album, “The Weighted Mind.” A Tennessee native who began performing at the age of 8, she was the first bluegrass musician to receive a presidential scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. She has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy center. Hull released her first album at 16. It was co-produced by Allison Krauss and Ron Block and reached No. 2 on the Billboard bluegrass chart. Her latest album, “A Weighted Mind,” will be released in January 2016. She

Gearing up for the St. Lucie Mets National Anthem auditions Eliza Levy, 13, of Palm City wasn’t shy to belt out the national anthem to an attendance of 4,044 prior to the Mets game against the Houston Astros Thursday, March 19 at Tradition Field in St. Lucie West.

TREASURE COAST — In 2015, people from around the region tried out for the National Anthem before a New York Mets spring training game at Tradition Field. On Jan. 16, the club will host auditions to select the performers who will sing the Anthem before each New York Mets spring training game and each St. Lucie Mets regular season game. Approximately 50 people came out to sing in front of judges in 2015. The woman who gets to make the final decision on who makes the cut and who does not is executive assistant Cynthia Malaspino with the New York and St. Lucie Mets. The formula for a good performance, Malaspino said, is remembering the words and staying in tune. It may sound simple enough, Malaspino noted, but “it’s a tough song to sing.” Next year will mark the 16th
Mitch Kloorfain chief photographer season Malaspino has picked the Mets’ National Anthem singers. “I love the children, they are so talented and sweet,” Malaspino said. “But I try to mix it up.” Men and women of all ages are invited to tryout, Malaspino added, and she does try to choose a
wide range of talented singers. “In a past year, I had someone sing who was over 80, that was amazing,” Malaspino said. As for the 2016 singers, Malaspino said she has high hopes for a great turnout. Though the auditions are scheduled from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m., Malaspino said she would stay as long as it took to hear everyone who wants a chance at the spotlight. To find out more about the St. Lucie Mets National Anthem Auditions, call (772) 871-2155.

It’s like getting kids to eat their vegetables...You have to disguise it or make it fun! That’s what happens at the county fair. We pour mountains of information about food, gardening, flowers, animals, and environmental issues into your head, all the while entertaining you and making learning fun! When you come to the fair, it’s not just about the junk food and rides — OK, so maybe just a little — But when you take the time to roam the halls of the buildings, you will discover everything from identifying those little white spots on your plants, to seeing how big a live shrimp is in real life. Younger fairgoers can find fun agricultural activities in the new AG-Tivity Center. Adults can find the Agri-facts around the fairgrounds. You will learn things like, If you buy Publix brand eggs from any Publix south of Route 60 in Yeehaw Junction, you are getting them from a farm right here in Indiantown. Some subjects are a little more dry, like understanding
Jay Spicer how fertilizer in your yard affects the waters we swim in here in Martin County. We hope you come discover many new things at this years Martin County Fair. Have a fair day! Jay Spicer, Fair Manager, Martin County Fair

time is right.” The Schneiders got a permit and hung the shingle. An eager public clamored for tours. Fortunately, Wind Chase has two black-andwhite Clydesdales, a rare horse breed in North America. “We’ve added a second carriage on our busier days,” Heather said. In addition to Clydesdales, Wind Chase has Welsh ponies.
During the holidays, Wind Chase is giving folks half-hour light tours. On Jan. 4, it’ll transition to historic tours. Wind Chase does some walk-up tours, but most are by reservation, which Heather highly recommended. TREASURE COAST — Justine Jocks of Palm City, 16, has been always been a busy helper in the community and has done so by gathering donations for at risk families throughout the Treasure Coast. She has contributed many hours overseeing back-to-school projects and other charitable causes. This year Justine, with the help of the neighbors from The Highland Reserve Community in Palm City, proved that the heart of giving is alive and well in the community. Earlier this month, The Highland Reserve Community opened the clubhouse doors to receive toy donations and she raised approximately $5000 worth of toys. “I don’t want them to feel like they are alone and that nobody is looking out for them, so I think this will really help what they are going through,” explained Jocks.” Justine’s family has been very supportive of her efforts to give to others less fortunate. For children living in poverty, toys are a welcome symbol of normalcy and thanks to Justine and the Highland Reserve Community, children

LYRIC from page 21 will be accompanied by Ethan Jodziewicz on bass, Allison Krauss on vocals and the legendary Bela Fleck on banjo.” Most of the songs were written by Hull, who has become a composer and lyricist and as well as a performer. Amy Helm comes to the Lyric April 13. Helm is a member of the folk music group Ollabelle and is the daughter of the late music legend Levon Helm, drummer of The Band. She now has a solo career as a singer and songwriter. Helm performed with her father and then created Ollabelle, a multi-genre, multi-instrumental folk group. They were invited to perform on Allison Krause’s national tour. Helm also co-produced her father’s comeback album “Dirt Farmer,” which earned
a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album. Helm’s first solo album, “Didn’t it Rain,” was recorded during the end of her father’s life. Levon Helm produced the album and is featured on several tracks. Kia Fontaine, the Lyric’s executive director, is excited about the new shows. “You’re talking about three incredible women in three diverse genres,” she said. “Sierra Hull is the next big bluegrass star. Amy Helm is an acclaimed folk music writer and singer and growing up in that realm, I can only imagine seeing her live. Ana Popovic is smoking hot. She is a blues goddess.” The Lyric Theatre is located at 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. For ticket information, call the box office at (772) 286-7827 or order online at www.lyrictheatre.com.
The pageant will be held Saturday, March 19 at 7 pm at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center.
