Martin Commission adopts utility fee
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2015

MARTIN COUNTY — The County Commission raised Palm City’s electric bills. Well, not so precisely. At its last regular meeting, the commission adopted an ordinance establishing a 30-year contract with Florida Power & Light promising to stay out of the power business. In return, FP&L will collect a utility franchise fee ranging anywhere from .05 to 6 percent to customers’ power bills and hand it to the county. That could be upward to about $9 million a year for the county to put toward infrastructure maintenance to plug a growing backlog, estimated to be approaching $270 million. “This is not to address all of our backlog, but primarily the backlog related to our roads,” Don Donaldson, the county’s engineering director, told the commission at the meeting. Brian Powers, speaking for the Indiantown Chamber of Commerce, urged the commission to adopt the franchise and collect the fee. “We view this as a good deal, because we have things to get done now,” he said. Debra Duvall, board member of the Economic Council of Martin County, said the utility fee spreads the discomfort of paying for infrastructure maintenance evenly across the commercial, residential

PALM CITY — Rebecca Negron is running for Congress. She’s also a member of the Martin County School Board. Oh, and her husband, Joe Negron, is the State Senate’s presumptive President Elect. In that whirlwind of activity it would take a miracle for her to organize the ninth annual The Grand Miracle at New Hope Fellowship Church. O ye of little faith. Fear not, The Grand Miracle will be on Dec. 11 and 12, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. both
nights. And, yes, Negron found time in her impossible schedule to organize it — with a little help from more than just God. “I know all the pieces to it, and I’m kind of orchestrating things,” Negron said. “But, I have a lot of people who’ve stepped up to the plate.” Lots of churches do Christmas cantatas. Some even stage living nativities and singing Christmas trees. New Hope sets its sights a little bigger than that. It sets up a drive-through, multi-media nativity story on several outdoor sets with a live cast with more than 60 actors, The Grand Mira-
cle also has animals, music and narration. The drive-through set takes visitors through the Gospel narrative starting not in Galilee or Nazareth, but long before either existed, say, “In the beginning.” “As Christians, it’s one thing to tell the Christmas story, but we try to cover, in seven themes, basically a biblical story of creation and the events surrounding the birth of Christ and seen through the death and resurrection,” executive pastor Gary Merritt said. “It’s more than the nativity story.

It’s in everyone’s interest to encourage some of our fine people to find better matches in other places.” After reigning in the County’s finances, Copeland’s next goal is in managing growth. “We’re going to have more and more development projects come into our district, and we have to gear up to be able to efficiently and fairly evaluate those projects,” Copeland said. He cited the law suit-ridden Pitchford’s Landing project and Avalon Venture’s plan to build single family homes and an assisted living facility as types of cases he has followed in Martin County for more than a decade. “Areas of growth are only going

PALM CITY — Solo practicing attorney with an educational and professional background in corporate finance, Henry Copeland is running for the District 1 seat on the Martin County Board of County Commissioners. “We have to get our fiscal house in order, and it is a train wreck,” Copeland said in an interview with Your Voice News & Views. Martin County is sitting on a nearly $260 million capital spending and maintenance backlog that Copeland said needs to be resolved immediately. After addressing the $260 million hole, Copeland said County Commissioners need to “right the ship” to ensure residents that the County will not return to its current financial state. “The County Commission needs to reorganize and re-prioritize, retrenching local government itself for cost efficiencies to have a stable path going forward,” Copeland said. “That is something that my skill set is entirely and uniquely adapted to accomplish.” Copeland called Martin County’s government spending “out of control,” and said he would go to work cutting costs by consolidating staff and re-visiting staff compensation packages. He added he supports consolidation of fire rescue with the City of Stuart to bolster savings. A mid-sized county in Florida, Copeland argues that Martin County has one of the highest operating expenses in the state. “I can make a difference because I will look at staff consoli-

County creates agriculture committee Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
MARTIN COUNTY — There’s a whole bunch of agriculture on the western side of Palm City, and it’s big business. The United States Department of Agriculture reports there’s almost 140,000 acres of agriculture production in Martin County. The county’s about 482,000 acres. That’s a huge hunk of agriculture for the County Commission to consider. So, it created the Martin County Agriculture and Natural Resources Advisory Committee at its regular meeting on Nov. 24. “My initial intent with this was to give agriculture a voice,” Commissioner John Haddox said at the meeting. “They own half the county.” Haddox’s district reaches to Indiantown through a lot of agricultural area. He proposed creating the advisory committee earlier this year. Advisory committees are tasked with considering items that’ll go before the commission and give recommendations. They don’t have the power to enact policy. At the meeting, Yvette Goodiel,

Martin County High decks the Halls of Molly’s House Sigma Phi Organization decorates Molly’s House for the holidays Adam Laten Willson
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
Molly’s House on Osceola St. brimmed with excitement last Wednesday when the Sigma Phi club from Martin County High School (MCHS) came to deck its halls and bring gifts. Every year the club, sponsored by AnnaMarie Wintercorn, comes to hang wreaths and lights, line the stairs with poinsettia and decorate the house’s four trees with resplendent holiday colors. Students also bring non-perishable items for the residents of the House and collect for Operation Christmas Child, an international evangelical program that distributes gifts to underprivileged children around the world. Molly Sharkey, the 18-year-old girl for whom the house is named, was a member of Sigma Phi before succumbing to leukemia in 1992.
Wintercorn loved Molly dearly and was always very close with the Sharkeys. “Talk about someone with a heart of gold,” said Debbie Sharkey, Molly’s mother, about Wintercorn. “Belonging to the group made Molly proud and feel valued.” Sigma Phi has been involved with Molly’s House since before construction, participating in fundraisers, sponsor events, and the annual float parade the house organized until recently. There are few places more deserving of Sigma Phi’s affinity than Molly’s House. Over the several years of Molly’s treatment, she was moved from city to city and often found accommodations for families lacking. “This broke Molly’s heart, and she vowed to change it,” said Sharkey. Molly decided she would design a hospitality house in her hometown of Stuart where critical care patients’ families could stay inexpensively. She detailed it in her journal, down to its wrap around

Molly’s House provides a warm, caring environment for patients and families in a medical crisis in their facility across from Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart.

Finding a home for the Treasure Coast’s most vulnerable children
O
n any given day, more than 150 children along the Treasure Coast are in the process of finding their forever family. The Children’s Home Society of Florida shines an even greater spotlight on both the plights and the dreams of these kids during the month of Nov. – National Adoption Month and projecting for a more during December. Every child deserves the chance to fall asleep in his or her own bed, to wake up in a safe, secure home, and to have the unconditional love and support of a family. Every child deserves this opportunity. It isn’t their choice to be unable to live with their biological moms and dads. It wasn’t their decision to leave their homes and enter foster care. All they are searching for is a chance at a bet-

Florida teens who exit foster care at age 18 without families this year will be homeless within three years. Half of these teens will be unemployed. Most youth formerly in foster care have little or no support system, don’t complete their education or receive proper job training, struggle to be financially self sufficient and become parents well before they’re ready. And so the cycle that forced many children into foster care continues…together, we can break this cycle. CHSF believes every child de-
serves that chance. With more than 150 children along the Treasure Coast searching for their “forever family”, the society collaborates with the Department of Children and Families and other community-based care agencies throughout the state to find safe, stable families ready to welcome a child “home.” In just the past five years, we’ve created families through adoption for approximately 650 children and teens along the Treasure Coast. While we’re incredibly proud of this tremendous accomplishment, we know there continues to be children searching, and we won’t rest until each one of them is connected to their bright light of hope— their “forever family.”

those with Alzheimer’s. According to the Florida department of Elder Affairs, there are 8,024 St. Lucie County residents with Alzheimer’s disease and 6,451 people in neighboring Martin County have the disease. Alzheimer’s disease is also the most expensive disease in the country. In 2015 , it is estimated that Medicaid spending on people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias will total $41 billion. Another number that will continue to grow. Though those numbers seem overwhelming, a lot of good numbers increased this year as well. As the numbers of those with Alzheimer’s increase, so do the numbers of those who volunteer their time in various ways to help the cause. This year’s Treasure Coast Walk to End Alzheimer’s which was at Jensen Beach on Oct. 3 brought out more than 900 walkers surpassing their goal by more than 100 people. The event raised more than $89,700 bypassing their goal of by close to $15,000 and almost doubling the walk’s proceeds from last year. As an entire chapter, the five local walks raised more than $1 million
Kate Pokorny for the first time in our chapter’s history. Sixty percent of that money goes back to local programs and operational costs, and the other 40 percent goes to national research for a cure. The Alzheimer’s Association distributes grants around the country to fund Alzheimer’s research. The Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter, just half an hour down 1-95, is one of the facilities that receives grants from the association. Though many experimental medicines are still more than a decade away from reaching commercial use, breakthroughs are starting. In 2016, we can help the good numbers grow even more. Right now there are two support groups

to get livelier,” Copeland said. As an attorney and a concerned citizen who has consistently and publically shared his opinions on these types of projects for more than a decade, Copeland said issues facing the County Commission today, like unresolved zoning inconsistencies, are not hitting him for the first time. “I’m uniquely poised to step in there and hit the ground running,” Copeland added. When it comes to economic development, Copeland’s plan is to focus on long term growth. “We need economic development, but it is false to sell it to residents and voters as a short term panacea to cure our past fiscal management,” Copeland said. He added, economic development should revolve around giving local businesses an environment for their “own skills and talents to prosper” and “from time to time welcome other [businesses] into Martin County.” Copeland argues his private sector background gives him an edge in working with businesses on long term development. Finally, Copeland plans to continue fighting to improve Martin County’s natural environment

Copeland said he is on board with current efforts to improve water quality in Martin County, but added “if we don’t address the fiscal problems we have, we will never get to those long term issues,” like the water. Though Copeland has clear priorities for what he aims to achieve if elected to the County Commission, he vowed to always remain open to public opinion. “I would pledge to people that I don’t have all the answers. I don’t think that any one in any local government can dig us out of the problems we have unless everyone in government throws open the doors and welcomes people to bring ideas forward. Even though that is often chaotic and sometimes inefficient, my door is open,” Copeland said.

The commission voted 3-2 to adopt the ordinance creating the utility franchise and accompanying fee electric customers will pay. Commissioners Sarah Heard and Doug Smith — who rarely join in dissenting votes — were against the ordinance. Heard argued that the county would be better served by again having a referendum for a proposed local-option sales tax. Voters narrowly rejected a 1 cent local-option sales tax in 2014. “We’re asking for an inordinate burden by those who can least afford a burden,” she said at the meeting. Smith said the commission hasn’t had an extensive conversation about economic development, and that should be the first place to go for raising revenue. Duvall added, “I’d add a fourth reason: it’s needed.” Local political activist Jackie Trancynger, who frequently is at odds with business interests, also voiced support for the fee, calling it a “necessary evil.” She said FP&L customers can soften the fee by turning off unneeded lights. “With this kind of thing, you can be frugal and get your electric bill down a little bit with some work by the family,” she said. Of the five public speakers who address the commission, none opposed the fee. However, commission candidate Henry Copeland offered conditional support. “I am concerned about institutionalizing a new tax,” he said. Copeland said that the reason given for adding the fee to electric bills in unincorporated Martin County will diminish over the years. He said once the backlog is

One I got in the mail and I still can’t figure out how to play.” Negron described that instrument, and it’s most likely an aulos, a double-reed instrument
similar to a primitive oboe, that was popular throughout the Greco-Roman world in the first century. She was certain about what the shofar was however. That’s a ram’s horn trumpet used in numerous Jewish festivals. It’s taken on great significance in many branches of Christianity, too. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also a hay ride. Merritt said one of the issues in previous years has been slowed traffic. This year, he said, organizers have worked out a new vehicle-movement scheme that’ll speed visitors’ experience. The Grand Miracle is one of the largest annual events in Palm City, possibly eclipsed only the Palm City Chamber of Commerce’s Palm City Fall Festival and Car Show. Merritt estimates 1,700 visited last year. “We literally sat down and said, ‘We want to move church to the community,’” Merritt said. “We want to give a gift to the community that’s expressly ours. We prayed about it and we brainstormed for over a year.” The church is at 3900 S.W. Citrus Blvd. Friday night typically has the smaller turnout.

and add representation from the (Association of) National Estuary Programs,” she said. The Florida Oceanographic Society was already on the list of proposed organizations. Commissioner Doug Smith questioned the wisdom of adding more environmental organizations to the advisory committee. He said the idea of the agriculture advisory committee was to give a substantial business interest in the county a means for talking to the commission. “From my perspective, we’ve diluted what the purpose was,” Smith said. Agricultural and environmental groups frequently have friction over resolving the influx of nitrogen, phosphorous and other suspended particles into the St. Lucie and Indian rivers. While the Army Corps of Engineers’ infamous releases of Lake Okeechobee water make headlines, about 75 percent of the water released through the St. Lucie Lock and Dam at Palm City’s southern end is local basin runoff from Martin’s agricultural west. Haddox disagreed with Smith’s assessment. He said the advisory committee is a good place to open dialog between agricultural and environmental interests. “Once they sit at a table and
“My initial intent with this was to give agriculture a voice. They own half the county.” Commissioner John Haddox start speaking with each other, they’ll see they’re talking to good people (on each side),” Haddox said. Carl Frost, co-owner of a 40-acre Indiantown farm, told the commission he worried that larger agricultural operations seem largely excluded from the advisory committee’s membership. “Big agriculture definitely needs to be at the table, and I think a couple seats,” he said. Frost added. The agriculture department estimated that in 2012 the average farm in Martin was about 235 acres. The county did about $166.5 million in agricultural sales that year, or about $282,000 a farm. Most of the sales, about $112.6 million, was in crops, including nursery and greenhouse products. The commission approved creating the advisory committee with 10 member organizations in a 4-1 vote. Commissioner Smith dissented.

PALM CITY — Rachel Maunus loves art. The Palm City resident, a sophomore at Martin County High School, likes to paint and draw, working in oils and charcoals. What is unusual about Rachel is what she is doing with her art. She has founded an organization, Art for Autism, where she helps youngsters 8-18 express themselves, as she does, through art. “I have a cousin with autism,” Rachel said. “I was a volunteer for TOPSoccer that works with kids with all disabilities. Each kid has a buddy. I was a buddy for three years. I just really like to work with kids with disabilities. I did it as a volunteer and got really into it.” Rachel began Art for Autism to fill a need. ‘There are a lot of sports pro-
grams for kids with disabilities,” she said. “I was thinking of something for kids with disabilities who want to express themselves and there weren’t any (programs.)” Rachel was given studio space at a studio on Central Parkway run by Sherry Singh. “Her daughter, Charlize, has autism and is a really great artist,” Rachel said. The teen will be giving lessons on Wednesdays from 5:30-6 p.m. in four-week sessions. There will be four students at one time, with two per teacher. A friend will be helping her. Right now, Rachel is trying out different art projects to see which ones work. “I’ve been working with two different kids,” she said, “They’re loving it and their art is beautiful. The parents are grateful because they don’t see a lot of people

Rachel Maunus college. “I am interested in special ed and art,” she said. “If it takes me somewhere, that would be awesome. I’m not sure yet.” The busy teen is also involved in Artists for a Cause, the national Art Honor Society, and Best Buddies, a group that helps those with disabilities. In her spare time, she likes photography, travel, jewelry-making and playing the ukulele. If you talk to Rachel, she says she’s just a regular kid who likes to hang with her friends and do fun things. Then you discover that she’s taken her passion for art and used it to help others. That makes her special in anybody’s book. Classes for Art for Autism will be held at 637 S.E. Central Parkway, Stuart. providing services for kids to use their creativity.” The classes Rachel holds will be free of charge, but parents are asked to make a donation for materials, which can be quite costly. When choosing projects, she looks for certain things that appeal to her students. “Kids with autism like sensory and tactile things,” she said. “They like projects where they can feel the materials. I used tissue paper to make flowers. They really like the material and the textures. Next time, I’ll use clay. Many kids have glue sensitivity. The materials must be safe for kids with autism, with nothing they could eat or put in their mouths to hurt them. I did a lot of research and talked to a lot of parents. From each, I learned a little bit more about catching their attention and finding creative outlets.” Among the projects planned are name bracelets, projects with flourless clay, symmetry painting, string art and handprint painting. Rachel has been publicizing Art for Autism with flyers and by working with the Treasure Coast Autism Project. The first session of her group began Dec. 1, but Rachel plans to hold more sessions after that. “I’m hoping to expand to more kids per week to help more kids,” she said. “I hope to keep the program going when I go to college, through people I’ve trained.” As a sophomore. porch and spiral staircase, and in 1996 they cut the ribbon within a half-mile of Martin Memorial Hospital. They have served 17,500 families in the last two decades, asking for a donation of just $20 a night per room. Naturally many of their guests have loved ones at the nearby hospital, but Sandy Pines also draws families from all over Florida that stay at the House, Sharkey said. Sigma Phi is ever active in the community. Nov. 14, they contributed to the Push the Pace for Peyton 5k at the high school, and Saturday they will help out at the Beach 2 Bar 5k in Stuart, a Cystic Fibrosis walk. They also regularly collaborate with the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast and River Kidz, an educational program through the Stuart-based Rivers Coalition. In 2011, Sigma Phi, a unique program to MCHS, was honored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals of the Treasure Coast as Outstanding Youth Group Supporting Philanthropy. “It’s good to get the students out young and motivate them toward the community,” said Katie Johnson, high school junior and president of Sigma Phi. “Originally many come to us merely to fulfill credit, but once they get involved, they want to help, and don’t just feel they have to.”
The club was found in 1987, when former MCHS principal Wanda Yarborough approached Wintercorn, a substitute teacher, and asked if she wanted to help shepherd Sigma Phi. “What’s Sigma Phi?” Wintercorn asked. “You tell me,” said Yarborough. Originally modeled after a philanthropic sorority, Wintercorn was essentially given free reign, and now Sigma Phi has nearly a hundred coed members and is clearly in high demand among events planners in Martin County. “Helping those less fortunate was instilled in me when I was in grade school,” says Wintercorn, who taught English at St. Mary’s Academy in Leonardtown, Md., “My mother was a great role model. I try to emulate the goodness she exhibited to everyone she would meet.” Most of the credit, however, she says with utmost humility is deserved by the students, her angels as she calls them, “who not only give of their time and efforts, but most importantly of their hearts.” The students went about their work with great cheer, goofing around with each other, eating pizza, and playing games. You could tell they felt like one big family. They were able to raise 893 non-perishables for Molly’s House and 98 boxes for Operation Christmas Child.

United Way and Publix raise $58,000 in supplies MARTIN COUNTY — United Way of Martin County partnered with Publix Super Markets to distribute more than $58,000 worth of much needed school supplies to 25 schools in Martin County. The school supply distribution was part of the annual “Tools for Schools” donation program where Publix collects donations from generous shoppers during a one-month period. This year $58,000 was collected, a 65 percent increase in donations, which enabled Publix to purchase even more supplies for students in need. Using the funds, Publix purchased more than 5,700 cases of supplies including pencils, cray-
ons, markers, notebooks, folders, scissors and glue. United Way of Martin County helped coordinate the delivery and distribution of purchased school supplies to Martin County School District schools and teachers. Students in need of school supplies are asked to notify their guidance counselor for more information. “It’s no secret that students perform better when they are prepared for school and ready to learn,” said United Way President and CEO Jim Vojscik. “The Tools for Schools program makes a positive impact on students and the community as a whole. Your Timing Won’t Be Off When You Invest Systematically If one of your worries is whether you’re investing at the right time, it shouldn’t be. By investing a set amount of money on a regular basis, you establish a simple routine that can help make your financial goals a reality.
In addition, investing systematically can help: • Make it possible to use market fluctuations to your advantage • Add potential growth and diversification to your portfolio • Keep your long-term financial goals in focus Investing a set amount of money on a regular basis does not ensure a profit and does not protect against loss in declining markets. Such a plan involves continual investment in securities regardless of fluctuating price levels of such securities. Style Encore in Stuart nabs top sales spot in the nation FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
MARTIN COUNTY — Leslie Levy and her staff at Style Encore in Stuart have an eye for women’s high-end fashion and a taste for designer labels. In November, the resale clothing store was recognized by its parent company, Winmark, for having the best sales of all 37 store locations nationwide. Though Levy does not want to reveal the number that put her store in first place, she did say they were “so far out in front it felt really good.” Levy opened the doors at Style Encore 18 months ago. She also owns two Plato’s Closet stores, one in Stuart and another in Port St. Lucie. On any given day, 50 to 60 people may walk into Style Encore with bags of name brand clothing and accessories ready to sell. Levy’s staff pours over each and every item, evaluates for quality, assesses for authenticity, and then makes an offer. “We get to see so much designer

Photo courtesy of Style Encore stuff that in my lifetime I never thought I’d see,” come through Style Encore, Levy said. Sometimes, items come in with the price tags still attached – brand new clothing that has lived out its life untouched in someone’s closet. “We carry everything from Merona all the way up to Moschino,” Levy said. The items Style Encore buys, Levy said, are generally between one and two years old. Whether a piece touts a Target or Old Navy tag, or a label like Gucci or Chanel, Levy guarantees if her store is selling it, it will be of the highest quality. “We are really selective,” Levy said. “We want women to have that high-end boutique feel.” Other brands shoppers can expect to find on Style Encore racks include Lilly Pulitzer, Anne Klein, Ann Taylor, Talbots, Chico’s, Tory Burch, J. Crew, and more. The rigorous selection process is one way Levy said she has built rapport with her customers. Training her staff on the ins and outs of customer service is one of Levy’s top priorities. “Our customers are our friends and family. There are customers who visit us daily. We know a lot of them by name,” Levy said. In addition to in-store sales, Levy’s Style Encore staff will come to customers’ homes for “closet cleanouts.” A closet cleanout consists of two to three employees sorting through a closet, advising which pieces the customer should keep and which items they should sell, and then making an offer on the clothing and accessories the customer is ready to part with. One customer in particular has
called on Levy for four closet cleanouts. “We go through her closet, write her a check for everything we can take, send some of the items to a charity of her choice, and then her closet is clean and ready for a new shopping year,” Levy said. In its first 18 months, Style Encore in Stuart has already expanded from 3,000- to 4,000- square feet and Levy said she has plans to open more Style Encore locations in the “near future.” Prior to opening her first store front, Levy had zero experience in retail. For 30 years, Levy was a physical therapist, first with Martin Memorial Hospital and then in her own private practice. Several years ago, she was visiting colleges with her children and came across a Plato’s Closet for the first time. “I was really impressed with them,” Levy said. She began looking into the franchise and in 2007 made the leap, opening Plato’s Closet in Stuart. In 2012, she launched her second Plato’s Closet location in Port St. Lucie, and in 2013 she added Style Encore to her lineup. Mackenzie Andersen has worked with Levy for almost four years, starting at Plato’s Closet and then moving with Levy to help her open Style Encore. “I started working at Plato’s Closet because I have a love for clothes. I had a lot of fun with that brand and I felt like I was growing into the next brand, so it just fit to open this new store with [Levy]” Andersen said. After several years in the busi-

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Labby’s Pizza and Pasta, known for being the home of the 30inch pizza, is now offering up some new and exciting dishes with the addition of their new chef, Ryan Dunphy. Owner Jeremy LaBianca explains, “For the last year Labby’s has mainly been a pizzeria. Now we have evolved with our entrees and have some more elaborate dishes to choose from.” When walking into Labby’s, it has the true feel of a family owned Italian restaurant and pizzeria with brick walls and a welcoming staff to meet you upon arrival. As you enter the dining room, it is quaint and cozy with softer dim lighting that gives a pleasant ambiance. It has an intimate, homey feel to it that makes it appropriate for a nice family dinner or a date night out. We were started off with the eggplant rollatini, a fluffy delicate mixture of fresh eggplant slices adorned with a 3-cheese ricotta and baked with a delicious homemade marinara sauce. An airy, yet richly flavored dish to gear our appetite for more to come! The famous Labby’s pinwheels were amazing, with a pepperoni, ham, sausage and mozzarella filling that was enveloped in a delectable crispy crust and homemade marinara for dipping delight. For our final starter, we were served mussels, cooked to perfection with chunks of garlic, tomatoes and a delicious light wine taste. These tender morsels simply melted in my mouth like butter. Labby’s owner LaBianca came over to greet

Having Ryan on board allows us to raise the bar on the entrees that our clientele has asked for” said LaBianca. us as if we were family and told us with pride, “What you are about to taste from Labby’s is so far above other local restaurants you will never want to go anywhere else!” He was so genuinely enthusiastic about his restaurant and the new entrees that it made us anxious
with anticipation. The main entrees came to us in a lovely presentation, with the shrimp and pesto risotto to be the first that caught my eye. The elegant

STUART – One of the great perks of this job is the opportunity to talk to people who come to town year after year. They actually begin to remember you and it becomes more of a catching-up conversation than an interview. That’s the case with saxophonist and vocalist Mindi Abair, who comes to town with “A Peter White Christmas” Dec. 9. The native Floridian, a self-described “Christmas dork” loves coming to Stuart. Abair has received two Grammy nominations and has topped the Billboard Contemporary Jazz album chart twice. She has performed on “American Idol,” toured with Aerosmith and jammed on stage with Bruce Springsteen. After Springsteen’s saxophonist Clarence Clemons died, Abair toured with the band’s drummer, Max Weinberg and performed on stage at the Beacon Theatre with The Boss himself. While Abair likes to make her own music, she has always found musical partners. Her album, “Wild Heart,” featured colorations with Gregg Allman, Booker T. Jones, Keb’ Mo’ and Max Weinberg. Her most recent album, “Live in Seattle,” is her first live CD. “I’m touring behind that,” she said. “I’ve made seven studio CDs but never a live one. It’s different and a little more organic, more rock ‘n roll, blues and soul. I wanted to switch up my sound. I traded up a few band members. I’ve always been a fan of Randy
Jacobs and his band, the Boneshakers. We were on the same bill at the Newport Jazz Festival and I came to sit in. He was using guys from my band and it was electric. His band has an edge I just love. We’ve just had our first gig on the road together.” This is Abair’s year of living live. She, White and Braun are putting out a new Christmas CD this year, “We haven’t done a record in about 10 years,” she said. “Over the past couple of years, we’ve done some different songs. It was fun for us to go back to see what was not on the original record. There were songs we only did for one year, and we put those on the record. It’s fun to see how we’ve morphed and changed.” The recording will have a fun version of a song written by Abair, “I Can’t Wait for Christmas,” and “Santa Baby,” has well as more traditional songs. “We’re putting the show together,” she said. “If we’re going to put out a live CD we want to make the show reflective (of that.)” Abair always has many projects going on, including her own line of jewelry. “It’s really fun to do, fun to wear and fun to see other people wearing it,” she said. “It’s a different perspective from music. Music is intangible, but to see someone actually have the jewelry on, it’s crazy. It’s fun to have that. I’ve had four trunk shows at Neiman-Marcus.” Abair is also a writer, having written, “How to Play Madison

MINDI from page 26 Square Garden: a Guide to Stage Performance.” She is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, but she said that parts of her education were neglected. “(Writing) happened organically,” she said. “I’ve lived kind of a crazy life, growing up on the road with my father’s band. With my career in music, I’ve gotten to tour with the coolest bands in the world. I thought I had an insight and I (decided) to put it into words. Who teaches musicians how to perform, engage with the audience and put together a show? I wasn’t taught that in college and I went to the best college. It took more than a year to write, but it was a calling.” Abair noted that performing live was becoming the way to make a musical living. “More and more people aren’t buying physical CDs,” she said. “Streaming didn’t exist 10 years ago. How do you get paid? I make 90 percent less in royalties, and it’s not just me, yet I’m more popular and have had more hits. Live bands are the strongest part of my career and we make a living live. I am lucky to have really talented guys. If you’re just a songwriter, you’re figuring out how to deal with a 90 percent drop in what you’re making.” Abair is never one to look back

Mindi Abair and she is looking forward in January to a trip to China, where she will make guest appearances as judge on the Chinese equivalent of “American Idol.” She’s also looking forward to her annual trip to Stuart. “I couldn’t be more excited,” she said. “I always do my Christmas shopping there. There’s a store, April Daze. There’s not a year I haven’t walked away with something for somebody. I love eating in the restaurants, sitting on the patios. I like them all.” It works out well, because Stuart likes having Mindi Abair in town. “A Peter White Christmas,” featuring Rick Braun and Mindi Abair, will be presented at the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart, Dec. 9 at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $42. Call the box office at (772) 2867827 or order online at www. lyrictheatre.com.

dish is a brand new, original creation of Dunphy’s. Upon tasting, I knew it was guaranteed to be a signature in Labby’s new arsenal of authentic Italian cuisine. The creamy robust risotto was bursting with flavor and the shrimp were fresh and tender. I had to stop myself so that I would have room for the other delights. My personal favorite, the penne Bolognese, was rich and meaty with perfectly cooked al dente pasta adorned with a wonderful, traditional meaty sauce. The final main course was the chicken rollatini, a perfectly cooked treat of layers of ricotta, fresh spinach, prosciutto, mozzarella and fresh garlic enveloped in tender, juicy chicken and served with fettuccini tossed in a delicate sauce with
a sweet hint of Marsala wine. This dish was beyond impressive and left me wishing I had more to take home. “Chef Ryan” came out to greet us and make sure that dinner was to our liking. He explained that his marinara sauce is a family recipe and was a staple in his house that he was raised on. Dunphy has been cooking with his father and grandfather since he was 9 years old and has perfected authentic Italian dishes over the years due to a rich tradition in his family. One of the things that he appreciates about coming on board with LaBianca is his family ethic. “The owner has a family himself, so he

understands family.” LaBianca believes in treating his staff as if they are also his family. LaBianca has two sons of his own, Anthony and Vincent who mean everything to him and are his driving force behind all he does in his restaurant. “I do this for my kids. I’m very passionate about my family. I wanted a family-oriented restaurant focused on the Sunday dinner type of experience,” he said. He believes in making a personal connection with every person that comes into the restaurant to eat. “I walk out to every single table and make it a point to ask how everything is.” LaBianca explains. Labby’s does family nights out and give-back nights in which 20 percent of his proceeds goes back to local charter schools. LaBianca says he does these types of events often and will arrange it for any local school in the area that contacts him. LaBianca is a huge small business advocate and believes in supporting the “mom and pop” types of businesses. Labby’s is also available for event catering and the dining room can be rented out for private parties. Have a special
request? Custom orders are not a problem. “If we have it, we will make it.” LaBianca states. Currently, Labby’s is running a special on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in which two entrees and a house bottle of wine can be enjoyed for only $35.99. Delivery is also available and LaBianca states that an early bird special will be coming soon. The shrimp pesto risotto and chicken rollatini are a wonderful bargain at $16.95 and $17.95 respectively. “My main objective is to give people a 5 star quality dining experience for a reasonable price.” LaBianca states. After the amazing dinner that I had eaten I was simply too full for dessert, so LaBianca was kind enough to send me home with his homemade cannoli. I could not wait very long after getting home to enjoy this treat, and it was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. Labby’s is located at 3961 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd., and is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fri. and Sat. from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sun. from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Delivery is available to surrounding areas. ness, Andersen said it has become second nature to recognize and evaluate the products that come in the door, especially when it comes to designer bags from names like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel. “Those are pretty easy to spot knock offs,” Andersen said. Andersen hopes to take her experience gained at Levy’s stores and one day apply it to opening her own boutique in a downtown setting somewhere, she said. “This is a really fun place to work, I really enjoy it, and it is pretty good training and experience” for her long term goals, Andersen added. After landing the highest sales of all Style Encore locations in the
nation, Levy said she is already looking toward what her store can achieve in the next 12 months. In 2016, Levy said she wants to win the award again, and beat her own sales record. “It’s always about competing against yourself to be the best you can be,” Levy said. To see what Levy has on hand at her designer-focused resale shop, check out her social media pages that are updated daily with pictures of the store’s hottest new items. Style Encore in Stuart can be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/StyleEncoreStuartFL or on Instagram @styleencorestuart. The store is located at 2414 SE Federal Highway in Stuart, and can be reached at (772) 288-3212.

Full of velvety soft orange and white fluff, I am a handsome 5 year-old Tabby. Lounging, chin scratches and playing with my toys I so enjoy. Not only do I have dashing good looks but also I am unique, see if I select you for my very own.
Sporting my 57 lb girlish figure, I am a 3 year-old German Shepherd and Rottweiler mix sweetie-pie. Not only am I a social butterfly but also you will be impressed with my talents of “sit” and “stay”. I am energetic and will do best in a fenced-in yard where I can exercise, play and have lots of fun.

Chamber Kicks off the Holiday Season in Style with 20th Annual Holiday Trade Show!
Exhibitors and guests enjoyed the beautiful Kane Center as its backdrop, on the evening of November 18th. The Chamber kicked off its 20th Annual Holiday Trade Show and Business after Hours with over 45 exhibitors and over 250 guests.
The event was made possible by our major sponsors; Southeastern Printing, Team Parks, Inc.,
Villar Plastic Surgery, The Kane Center, The Stuart News/ TC Palm, Hometown News, Coast 101.3 FM and the Stuart/ Martin County Chamber of Commerce.
It wasn’t snowing outside but the festive atmosphere put Christmas and all the holidays on everyone’s mind! Appearances by beautiful elves and Santa
made the night complete!
Delicious food was provided by Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, BITE Catering, Benihana, Think Greek, Castaways and Chef Christopher of the Kane Center. The evening was spent shopping for jewelry, fine chocolates, golf lessons for one’s favorite golfer, show tickets, photography sittings and more.
New members and old friends mingled and filled the room as everyone anticipated another wonderful holiday season. Thank you again to The Kane Center for opening their doors to this annual celebration and trimming a tree early, just for this event!
