The association set up three radios at Sandsprit Park, 3443 S.E. St. Lucie Blvd., Stuart. About 15 operators shared time on three radios and managed to contact about 800 other stations. The annual event has three purposes: a bit of competitive fun as clubs try to outdo each other; promoting amateur radio by setting up in public places; and giving operators practice for helping emergency managers during widespread crises, such as earthquakes and hurricanes.

MARTIN COUNTY — The county has gone CodeRED. Martin County Fire Rescue has a new emergency notification system called CodeRED. It lets officials get safety messages to folks and businesses by phone, text and email. “It gives us access to more people, more ways, more quickly than the previous system did,” Chris Church, deputy director of the department’s emergency management agency, said. A month and a half down, only four and a half to go until the North Atlantic hurricane season ends. But hurricanes aren’t the only disasters that strike the Treasure Coast. There are firestorms, tornadoes, chemical spills and plenty of others. It’s the agency’s job to make sure folks get warnings and news fast. But, Church said county residents need to do their part, too. Namely, give the county ways to contact them during emergencies. Gone are the days when emergency planners could count on massive call outs on automated notification systems. Church said he’s asked people about their telephones. “About a third of the people said they don’t have landlines anymore,” he said. The county used to have the

MARTIN COUNTY — Joe Sawyer enjoys sitting in his Palm City home and having small talk with people from all around the world. “Last night, I talked to a guy in Tripoli, Lebanon,” he said. “My little radio and wire in the attic. It’s almost like magic you can do that.” OK, talking to people all over the world is not as impressive as it was even 20 years ago, thanks to the Internet. But Sawyer has talked to someone New Zealand with just radio waves to connect them. He’s president of the Martin County Amateur Radio Association. The association recently participated in the American Radio Relay League’s annual Field Day. Every year on the fourth full weekend of June, local amateur radio clubs throughout the United States take 24 hours to make as many contacts with others as possible. The event has three purposes: a bit of competitive fun as clubs try to outdo each other; promoting amateur radio by setting up in public places; and giving operators practice for helping emergency managers during widespread crises, such as earthquakes and hurricanes. “Over the weekend, we made about 800 contacts,” Sawyer said. “If that isn’t a (local) record, it’s close to it.” The local association set up at Sandsprit Park, 3443 S.E. St. Lucie Blvd., Stuart. “We were an A-class operation, meaning we were outdoors and off the (electric) grid,” Sawyer

Attorney’s family an American success story Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — Attorney Jennifer Alcorta Waters, the new president of the Martin County Bar Association, comes from a family that is the essence of the American dream. The first Cuban-American president of the bar association, her father came to the United Sates when he was 12. “He came with a suitcase,” she said. “He lived with a family in New York City. His father was imprisoned in Cuba, accused of being a CIA spy. Initially, they thought Castro would be overthrown. They were trying to get boys of his age out of Cuba because they were being shipped to Russia for indoctrination. “A couple of months later, his younger sister came. He didn’t speak English (when he arrived.) He worked from 13 on. He got a scholarship to a technical high school and then a full scholarship to NYU to study engineering.” At NYU, her father met her mother, who was also there on a full scholarship. She came from Kentucky.

Jennifer Waters “It’s an amazing story,” Waters said. “My dad epitomizes the American dream. He got a master’s at NYU. They moved here in 1974, and they both got MBAs from Florida Tech. Waters was born in Stuart, but her father worked for Pratt & Whitney and was transferred to Connecticut, where she went to

high school. “My mother preferred Florida and they moved back when I went to college,” she said. “The plant (here) virtually closed and they went back to Connecticut. They had bought a parcel of land down here in the 1980s. They had intended to retire here and they did.” Waters attended Wake Forest, where she majored in English and communications, graduating magna cum laude. “I absolutely, positively wanted to be a broadcast journalist,” she said. “Things changed.” Among the changes was the decision to go to law school. She attended the University of Florida Law School, from which she graduated with honors. She also met Tyson James Waters, whom she would marry. “I met my husband the first week,” she said. “He says he saw me across the room and knew. I’m not sure it’s true. He did go home over Thanksgiving and told his parents he’d met the woman he would marry.” The two, who live in Palm City, have been married almost 15 years and have two children. Waters is a partner with the firm Fox, Wackeen, Dungey, Beard,

Bush, Goldman, Kilbride, Waters & McCluskey in Stuart. Waters believes the bar association, which has more than 400 members, has an important role to play. “It’s an important professional organization to help mentor younger lawyers,” she said. “It’s an important professional organization to (help lawyers) continue to work effectively and efficiently. We sponsor continuing education and have events such as a tennis tournament, softball, a luncheon and an event at the Florida Oceanographic that allow lawyers to be in a non-adversarial positon. “It is our firm belief that professionalism increases and there are fewer issues with failing to demonstrate professionalism when we meet together. When you know each other, it helps everyone to get along.” Waters said the benefits extend beyond the legal profession. “If you have two people who are responsible and rational, it benefits the court system. It moves the dockets and defrays Clint costs. When you have a social relation-

The 10 site-selection committee members met by conference call on Tuesday, July 1, to discuss their thoughts after visiting nine perspective sites in six counties. Murray said they used score sheets to grade the prospective locations. He was unsure how strong Tradition’s lead was. The committee members are going to mail their score sheets for review. After verifying the prospective sites’ initial placements — “A recommendation will be made to (Mike Prendergast) our executive director of the Florida

TREASURE COAST— Tradition has taken an early top spot in the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs’ hunt for a place to put its next veterans nursing home. “St. Lucie (County) had more points than anyone else, followed by Marion County,” Steve Murray, site selection committee member and communications director at the FDVA, said. The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs is not associated with the federal Department of Veterans Affairs. The state veterans department now operates six nursing homes with 120 beds

HOME from page 4 Department of Veteran Affairs,” Murray said. Prendergast will give the committee’s recommendation to Gov. Rick Scott and Florida Cabinet at an Aug. 19 meeting. The governor and cabinet will decide where the next veterans’ nursing home will be. “They don’t have to (follow the committee’s recommendation), but I can tell you with the previous seven homes the governor and cabinet have not gone against us,” Murray said in a previous interview. The cabinet is made up of the Attorney General Pam Bondi, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam, and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater. Wayne Teegardin, St. Lucie’s veterans services manager, is leading efforts to get the veterans nursing home on the Treasure Coast. “We are absolutely ecstatic,” he said. “We thought we would definitely be in the top two. We knew who our main competitor would be, and we were right.” Ben Humphries, president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Florida State Council, responded to the announcement that the

Treasure Coast is likely to get the next home with two words. “About time,” the Vero Beach resident said. ““The population we have in this area — we’ve been needing one for quite some time,” Humphries said. “We’ve been harping on this for the longest time to get one built.” The Tradition Land Company donated about 28 acres to St. Lucie County to bolster its bid to get the next home. During its 2013 session, the Florida Legislature approved about $100,000 for an independent study to determine whether a new veteran nursing home was needed, and if so where it should go. Scott and the cabinet considered the study, which Health Strategies did, at a February meeting in Tampa. The governor and cabinet opted to send letters to the top 10 counties the study identified as good places for veterans homes requesting letters of interest back from them. “Eight of the 10 counties did send us letters of intent telling us they were interested in bidding,” Murray said in a previous interview. Murray said that St. Lucie and Palm Beach counties were in that list. Palm Beach didn’t send a

Crown Car Care

Steve Murray letter of intent. Others on the list were Lee, Collier, Polk, Manatee, Hillsborough, Marion, Putnam and Sumter. The closest veteran nursing home to the Treasure Coast is the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger Veterans’ Nursing Home, 8401 W. Cypress Drive, Pembroke Pines. The next closest is the Emory L. Bennett State Veterans’ Nursing Home, 1920 Mason Ave., Daytona Beach. Bennett was built in 1993. Nininger in 2001. Murray said the last home was

built in 2010. That was the Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home in St. Augustine. That home cost about $30 million to build. The state paid about 35 percent of the costs. The VA paid about 65 percent. Other homes are in Land O’ Lakes, Panama City and Port Charlotte. The assisted living facility is in Lake City. Murray said the FDVA has the needed money for its share to go forward with building a state veterans nursing home, because of changes the legislature made to its trust funds last session. The trust has about $47 million. Teegardin said in a previous interview that there are numerous reasons Tradition and the Treasure Coast would benefit from a veterans home. “They’re supposed to hire around 190 people to run it, in addition to the construction jobs it’ll create,” he said. The home would serve veterans for about a 75-mile radius. Teegardin said that makes Tradition an ideal location for a veterans home. “(The local) 75-mile radius is estimated to have 211,647 veterans in it,” he said “Of those, 112,758 are over age 65, which is the target of the nursing home.”

Which one are you, bib or apron? A

ll is not black and white in life, but I have seen that some go through life wearing a bib and others take their journey wearing an apron. Some transfer from one stage to another as they grow and mature, and some will change their attire situationally. So, what are the characteristics of a “bib wearer?” A bib wearer is a person who sits and waits, a person who wants to be fed, and a person who may see things pass them by because they are waiting for everything to come to them instead of trying to make things happen. We’ve all seen them in our offices. They are the employees who always call the minute something goes wrong, they don’t try to figure out their way out of a mess, and usually will not take the initiative to relate their previous experiences and training to apply it to their current crisis. This person will not take the initiative to learn more on their own and will usually do the bare minimum to get by. Sometimes our “work martyrs” will fall into this category. Those who are too busy to ask for help, the ones who work so much harder than everyone else around them (they will tell you so) and they are the ones who probably would have more spare time than anyone if they used their time to improve and be productive instead of being a victim at every turn. Bib people may even

your

Bill Hughes be your extra hours and overtime people, but if the truth was known, they will be some of your worst time wasters. They usually don’t accept help because they don’t want someone to figure out their insufficiencies at work. Bib people see life as “what will life give me.” They see things as they are, looking for only what will benefit them. In conflict, bib people think only of themselves and the impact of situations as to their benefit, their image and their outcome. Bib people seek the opportunities to make it big quick, to get that deal that is too good to be true and run over others to feed themselves with whatever their appetite of the day desires. Bib people never do anything that is their fault. Circumstances made them do it; computers messed it up; someone else started the process, so they wouldn’t

have done it wrong if it hadn’t been started wrong. Bib people are unaccountable to others and refuse to accept blame. Bib people preach “fairness,” but often their view of fair is that everyone should be as miserable as they are. So, we’ve beaten up on the bib wearers. What type of a person is an apron wearer? An apron wearer is the hard worker who is responsible, always is there to help others and wants little if any recognition for their hard work and efforts. An apron wearer is the person who is there to serve, a person who sees life and asks what can I do for others and what can I do in a situation to change the outcome to a better result? Apron wearers are those who seek ways to help the business and seek ways to help their co-workers. They are often the idea people when there are decisions to be made. They will base their decisions on what will be best for all, not just themselves. Often, they will base their decisions without regard for the effect it will have on them. Apron wearers see fairness in a sacrificial way. Fair to them is that other people as just as

happy about things as they are. Shared misery is not a thing that they are happy with. Apron wearers are those who will most likely succeed as a result of their hard work and service attitude, but success comes as a surprise to them because it is an afterthought and a byproduct of their serving nature, not their goal. So, every day when we get ready for work, are we going to put on a bib or put on an apron? Are we going to go into situations seeking what will “feed” us best, or are we going to serve the situation unselfishly with the group’s success in mind? It’s a choice that each of us makes, and remember, bibs and aprons are easy to take off and put on, but the attitudes that come with them can be really hard to change.

veryone needs to be aware of the financial resources they will have available in retirement. But if you’re a woman, you must be particularly diligent, for a variety of reasons. And that means you’ll need to know just what to expect from Social Security. Why should you, as a woman, pay extra attention to Social Security? For one thing, women often take time off from their careers to care for children and older parents, so they may accumulate less money in employer-sponsored retirement accounts, such as 401(k) plans. And women still live several years longer than men, according to the Census Bureau. Clearly, then, you need to get the most you can from Social Security. To do so, you will need to consider at least three key factors: • Age — You can start taking retirement benefits as early as 62, but your benefits may be reduced by up to 30 percent unless you wait until your “full retirement age,” which is likely 66 or 67. If

retirement plans and your anticipated financial needs — in determining when you should start taking Social Security. • Employment — If you work while receiving Social Security benefits before you reach full retirement age, your benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $2 you earn over an annual limit, which generally increases each year. In the year you reach full retirement age, your benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $3 you earn over the limit before your birthday. But once you reach full retirement age, your benefits will no longer be adjusted for earned income. • Marital status — As a spouse, you can generally receive Social Security payments based on your own earnings record or collect a spousal benefit of up to 50 percent of your husband’s Social Security benefit. The benefit will be reduced if you start taking it before your full retirement age. To start collecting Social Security

Martin family physician selected as regional top doctor FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., America’s trusted source for identifying Top Doctors, has selected Stuart family physician Dr. Jeffrey Gorodetsky for inclusion in its highly selective list of Regional Top Doctors this year. Fewer than 36,000 physicians — less than 5 percent of the nation’s licensed physicians — have been selected as Castle Connolly Top Doctors in their regions for their specialties. Castle Connolly Top Doctors are selected by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. after being nominated by peer physicians in an online nomination process. Nominations are open to all board certified MDs and DOs and each year tens of thousands of doctors cast many tens of thousands of nominations. Honorees are selected from the nominees by the Castle Connolly physician-led research team based

Jeffrey Gorodetsky on criteria including their medical education, training, hospital appointments, disciplinary histories and more. Gorodetsky and the staff of JSG medical practice operate a hybrid practice with the choice of concierge medical care or traditional medical care with one of his physician assistants. Gorodetsky’s practice emphasizes and includes well-care and preven-

tative medicine, office procedures including numerous cosmetic procedures, wellness and weight loss programs, and a natural, non-drug approach to patient management of metabolic and nutritional imbalances. RADIO from page 1 said. About 15 operators split time on three radios calling out, making and noting contacts, then moving onto more. Sawyer said the Martin operators likely made contact with every state in the Union, along with some Caribbean nations. He said many international ham radio operators know about Field Day and will go on the air to help out. “I made one contact to Hawaii and a couple other guys made a couple,” Sawyer said. We got a few alohas.” In addition to the longtime licensed operators, a few folks got their first taste of amateur radio. That was on the club’s Get On the Air Station. “At that location, we had about 25 contacts made by newly licensed hams, or people interested in getting into the hobby,” Sawyer said. The Martin club has about 50 members. It has monthly meetings from 7 to 8 p.m. the fourth Thursday of each month at the Martin County Airport Maintenance Building, 1895 S.E. Flying Fortress Lane, Stuart. Sawyer said club members enjoy helping beginners. “Our youngest member ever was an 11-year-old girl,” he said. “She was doing this as part of a science project for school. There’s no age limit. If you can pass the test, you can get a license.” For more, visit www.mearaweb.com.

Ripple effect of donations from church, neighbors helps shelter solve transportation challenge for pregnant, homeless women FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — When a community unites to help those in need, the ripple effect is a beautiful and powerful thing. When Mary’s Shelter - a local nonprofit organization in Stuart that provides residential housing and supportive programs for homeless, pregnant women in need - received a significant donation from St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, it sparked a chain reaction of support. St. Mary’s Episcopal Church recently became a supporter of Mary’s Shelter through its foundation, The Heritage Fund. The relationship began last year when parishioners were recruited to transport the expectant mothers living at Mary’s Shelter to the church. It quickly became apparent that one of Mary’s Shelter’s biggest challenges was transportation. The Heritage Fund Committee decided to help fill that gap by approving a $10,000 grant so that Mary’s Shelter could purchase a vehicle to better serve the women living at the residential shelter. “Part of our church’s mission is

derserved group of young women in our community.” As this critical funding source was secured, Mary’s Shelter’s president, Gina Thompson, was approached by neighbors in Willoughby Country Club in Stuart about donating a vehicle to the organization. Three different families from Willoughby were

able to collaborate and donate an additional $6,000 to pave the way for the purchase of a Mazda MPV Mini-Van. “Mary’s Shelter is a wonderful organization run by a dedicated team of compassionate people,” said one of the donors who wished to remain anonymous. “We all got caught up in the cause and were happy to be a part of it. The mission of Mary’s shelter is noble and compelling. They help mothers and their babies. They get women back on their feet.” “Mary’s Shelter is always challenged by the difficulty in securing transportation for the women we serve. To get them to their classes, their jobs, training, and other important activities. The financial support from St. Mary’s Heritage fund and the generosity of the three anonymous residents in Willoughby Country Club enabled us to not only purchase this much needed mini-van, but provides ongoing operating and maintenance costs as well,” said Mary’s Shelter president Gina Thompson. “This is a heartwarm-

TREASURE COAST — Each year, the YMCA of the Treasure Coast is able to provide quality programming for families in need with the help of funding from the community. As a thank you, the Y will be hosting its annual “Lunch with the Bunch” event in Indiantown and Port St. Lucie on July 17 (Indiantown) and July 18 (Port St. Lucie). Guests will enjoy a catered lunch alongside the children who benefit from their generous support. In Indiantown, the lunch—catered by Rines Market — will be on Thursday, July 17, from noon-1:15 p.m. The St. Lucie event, sponsored by Reprographic Solutions

Inc., will be held on Friday, July 18, from noon-1:15. The informal-style luncheons will give the children served by Y programs, such as summer camp and swim lessons, a chance to share their experiences with guests. “Community leaders, business owners and friends of the YMCA will get to meet and have lunch with the Y children they helped scholarship for summer camp and swim lessons,” said Shawn Keil, YMCA of the Treasure Coast District executive director. “It’s a terrific time to celebrate the Y Mission at work in St. Lucie County and Indiantown.” The YMCA of the Treasure Coast strives to provide services to all families, regardless of their ability to pay. Theater companies join for summer fare Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — It’s hazy, hot and humid on the Treasure Coast, and you might be looking for light and easy entertainment to beat the heat. Jake Sanders of Curtain Call Productions and Jon Putzke of Theatre-Go-Round Dinner Theatre have just the ticket with the original musical revue, “Milestones & Memories,” at Be Merry Gastro Pub in Stuart July 30. Jake Sanders, artistic director of Curtain Call, said that this revue and another, “Heatwave, later in the summer, are perfect for this time of year. “While we’re proud of our heavier fare and darker shows, we know Stuart needs some high-quality, lighter shows,” he said. The show is a musical trip through 50 years of pop music, with everyone from the Andrews Sisters to the Village People represented. Beth McKenzie-Shestak, Shamara Turner and Patty Carreau bring the show to life with their blended harmonies and original choreography. “They sing, they dance,” Sanders said. “It is not Curtain Call’s typical fare. This is enjoyable, great music by really talented performers. I was impressed with the quality of Jon’s shows. He

packs a lot of amazing songs in a short show.” Putzke said that the show will cover decades from the 1940s-198os, with favorites including “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “All Shook Up,” “Under the Boardwalk, “Proud Mary,” “YMCA,” “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” and “Celebration.” There are 40 songs in all during the 80-minute show. Putzke said that joining with Curtain Call made good sense. “At Theatre-Go-Round, we have been all over Indian River County,” he said. “Stuart is a wonderful location. It’s great to be invited, and it’s a great market to be doing dinner theater.” Since this is dinner theater, we can’t forget the meal. Each ticket will include dinner, starting with a salad and a choice of grilled lemon chicken or blackened mango mahi. There will be a choice of side dishes and coconut chocolate custard for dessert. Be Merry’s full bar and craft beers will be available. On Aug. 27, Sept. 24 and Oct. 29, the group will present “Heatwave: The Legendary Ladies of Motown.” While the format will be the same as in “Milestones,” the menu will be different. These performances are meant to bring a smile, but they have a serious purpose for Sanders. “It’s another way for Curtain Call to raise money,” he said “We

We’d like our own space for rehearsals and to keep improving and elevating us to a higher standard.” Curtain Call Productions and Theatre-Go-Round Dinner Theatre present the musical revue, “Mile-

Social calendar publishes nonprofit events for free FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — The Social Calendar for fundraising and public relations professionals at www.bbjonespr. com offers nonprofit organizations in Martin and St. Lucie counties an opportunity to broadcast their organizations’ major fundraising and public events online for free. The calendar lists nonprofit organizations’ fundraising and public events so other organizations can see past and upcoming events in the two-county area. “The calendar was designed so nonprofit organizations can notify other nonprofits of fundraising events and hopefully avoid a conflict,” said Beverly Jones, president of BB Jones Communications. “The calendar is a valuable tool because organizations can go back in the calendar to see a previous event’s date and time.”

It is encouraged that organizations submit their event at least three months prior to the anticipated event date, or, preferably, as soon as the organization secures their event date. The calendar also features Martin and St. Lucie County public school vacation dates to facilitate event planning.
