PALM CITY — Tony Chillemi is training to “run with endurance the race that is set before” him. Well, he won’t actually be running; he’ll be cycling. Cycling 369 miles within a week to help raise awareness of and donations to the Treasure Coast Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “I’ve never been an avid cyclist,” he said. “I just entertained a vision I think God gave me.” Chillemi is the area representative for the Christian organization with “huddles,” student groups, at public and private schools across the nation and in others. He’ll start the three-state cycle trip on Aug. 5, right after the Fellowship of Christian Athlete’s Southeast Region Staff Retreat, St. Simons, Ga., near Savannah.

“(In the 2011-2012 school year) we didn’t really have a presence on any campuses,” he said. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has student-organized meetings before school on Fridays at Martin County High School. Wil Price, 16, is that huddle’s vice president. “It’s gotten me into more of a leadership role and more able to share my faith,” he said in a telephone interview. Wil was at a five-day leadership camp in Lakeland. He was among a dozen students the Treasure Coast Fellowship of Christian Athletes gave $100 scholarships for the camp. The high school chapter’s president, John Hall, was also at the camp on a scholarship. “I’m getting leadership skills using Christ,” he said. Hall added, “We’re taught here that prayer is power; we’re learning to pray.” Chillemi said raising money for the camp scholarships is a reason he’s undertaking the 369-mile trek. Another is to raise money for Fellowship of Christian Athletes Bibles to give students. Last school year, about 1,000 were distributed in Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee, Palm Beach and Broward counties. The Bibles cost the organization about $7.95 each. “Our biggest need is for scholarship funds for camps,” Chillemi said. To learn more about the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, visit fca.org. Celebrate Christmas in July

It’ll take him to Raleigh, N.C., for the Tenth Avenue North Classic Golf Tournament at the Brier Creek Country Club. That starts on Aug. 12. Professional golfer Kevin Streelmann is co-hosting that event. Folks have an opportunity to join Chillemi on the ride. Well, not literally, but financially. He set up 369miles.com for folks to pledge anything from 10 cents to $5 a mile. Any donation at 10 cents a mile or more will get folks in the tournament if they want. Remember that bit about “never been an avid cyclist?” Chillemi’s aluminum LeMond road cycle is borrowed. He may not have been an avid cyclist, but the 30-year-old is visibly athletic and quickly fell in love with the sport. He’s been riding for distances up to 60 miles as he trains for the trip. He plans to ride 75 miles a day during it. At press time, Chillemi had plans to ride a century, 100 miles, for training. Of course, there’s something Georgia and the Carolinas have Florida doesn’t. Something avid cyclists know a rider needs to train for. Inclines. The Appalachian Mountains, for example. “I’ve been doing weight training and working gears on bridges,” he said. Along with using a stationary bike set for inclines. Chillemi said he gets out for training around 5 a.m. He is married to Rebekah. The couple have 2-year-old son, Luke, and are expecting a second in November. The couple attends Coastal Life Church in Palm City. The family might have faith in God, but his wife insisted Chillemi have an escort car to help clear traffic and prevent accidental collisions during the long ride. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes started in 1954. Chillemi said that it now has about 160 members among Martin County’s three high schools.

Folks have an opportunity to join Chillemi on the ride. Well, not literally, but financially. He set up 369miles.com for folks to pledge anything from 10 cents to $5 a mile. Any donation at 10 cents a mile or more will get folks in the tournament if they want.

Palm City church selects pastor for Tradition Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TRADITION — The Rev. Maryanne Kehlenbach of the new Living Faith Church in Tradition spent most of her working life as a banker, first in her native New York and then on the west coast of Florida. During the 1980s and 1990s, Kehlenbach was responsible for putting into place the systems that allowed banks to set up ATMs and then online banking. “It was building the processes,” she said. “I had to figure out how things worked.” Kehlenbach, who has an M.B.A. from Adelphi University, worked for some of the largest New York banks. She also did consulting work. In 1998, she and her husband Carl, also a banker, wanted to come to Florida, and when a job for Carl opened at Chase Bank near Tampa, the couple moved to Florida. “I continued consulting in New York,” Kehlenbach said. “I wanted to find something closer to home.” While she was building a successful career in New York, Kehlenbach had begun going to

church again. “As a kid, I wandered away, and I found my way to the Lutheran Church,” she said. “It was the most freeing exKehlenbach perience to understand that Christ died and it was a total gift. There’s nothing you have to do. It gives you your freedom. We’re in a rat-race world and the freedom is life-changing.” Kehlenbach was invited to work with young people in a youth ministry at a church on Long Island. “I started working with kids and loved it,” she said. “I was asked to consider a volunteer position. I loved working with kids and families. When we moved to Florida, I found a home church and started working with youth.” Kehlenbach continued her consulting, commuting to New York. She still found time to work as a volunteer youth leader. “My faith grew greater,” she said. In children and youth, I see

God’s presence.” At a retreat, Kehlenbach told a woman she knew that she was feeling a call to a full-time youth ministry. “She was going to tell me that I needed to do it because I had a gift,” Kehlenbach said. “I was still in banking. Carl and I talked. I said that I was feeling a strong pull to (do the work) full time and he said, ‘We’ll make it work.’” This was 2003 and the Kehlenbachs set a goal of 2006 to downsize and put themselves in a position where they could survive on a much smaller income and a

very different lifestyle. In March 2006, Kehlenbach started at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. The program, leading to a master’s degree in children and youth ministry, was both online and at the school, in intensive two-week sessions. She also continued working full-time. “I loved it,” Kehlenbach said. “I’m a lifelong learner.” Kehlenbach studied for 2½ years and then felt the call to become an ordained minister. “A friend said. ‘You need to be a

Henkes, executive director, said. Nationally, the society is seeking 300,000 to participate in its Cancer Prevention Study-3. The longitudinal study will build on information gained by similar ones started in the 1950s and 1980s. According to the society, those studies, called CPS-I and CPSII, helped confirm links between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, along with demonstrating that those with larger waist sizes are more prone to certain kinds of cancer. With information such as this, doctors and public-health officials are better able to educate patients and communities about cancer risks and help them make more healthful choices. To participate, volunteers must be between the ages of 30 and 65, have no prior cancer diagnoses, be willing to answer some lifestyle and medical-history questions and give a bit of blood at the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center, 501 S.E. Osceola St. Stuart, on Aug. 23 or 24.

“We’re asking people in the community to register ahead of time at our website cancer.org/cps3florida,” Henkes said. “They log onto the website and select ‘Martin County’ as the registration area.” Those who don’t qualify to participate in the study can still help out. “We’re also looking for ‘champions for cancer prevention’ to help us reach out to their friends and families,” Henkes said. She said that it takes about 30 minutes to answer online questions. Participants then print registration confirmations to take to the blood-drawing site. There they’ll answer a few more questions. In addition to giving a bit of blood, participants will have to do something else, too. “They do a waist measurement,” Henkes said. Once registered, participants will get numbers assigned to them to ensure medical privacy. To find out more about the study, email or call Henkes at tracy.henkes@cancer.org, (772) 287-7467, Ext. 5253.

AWARDS from page 8 ists from nine art associations in Palm Beach and Martin County competed in the event. The judge was Talya Lerman, director of education at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. Jane Blatt is a member of the Palm City Art Associates and handles their public relations. She had a work, “American Idol,” accepted into the show, and while it did not win an award, it was placed on the front entry wall. She said that artists take special pride in being accepted into juried shows. “It is a great honor to receive recognition among this select group who created and displayed art work in almost every medium a connoisseur or patron could wish for,” she said in a written statement. Blatt’s work, “American Idol,” was first exhibited last year at the Backus Museum’s show, “Celebrating America,” where it won an honorable mention. It is portrait of milk and cookies on a blue plate with stars. “My husband loves milk and cookies and he said, ‘What could be greater than peanut butter and jelly or milk and cookies (to celebrate America?)’ Nancy Steinberg, the president of the Palm City group, said that anyone is invited to belong. “You don’t have to live in Palm City to be a member,” she said.

“We meet at the Cummings Library (in Palm City) on the second Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m., beginning in October. We have a demonstration every month except December and guests are welcome. We have 140 members and our meetings are packed. We usually have between 70-90 people.” Membership dues are $30 and entitle members to participate in shows such as the Lighthouse exhibition. In addition to the showing at the Lighthouse exhibit, Palm City Art Associates is also celebrating an honor given a long-time member. Valerie Bloomfield-Ambrose was recently awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica, in recognition of her contributions to the art and education of that country, where she taught for many years. “The Art of Association,” a juried multimedia exhibition, runs through Aug. 15 at the Lighthouse Art Center Museum, 373 Tequesta Drive, Tequesta. For more information, call (561) 746-3101. Palm City Art Associates will hold its first meeting of the new season on Oct. 9 at the Cummings Library, 2551 S.W. Matheson Ave., Palm City, at 1 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. For more formation about Palm City Art Associates, send an email to pcaanewsletter@gmail.com.

ike everyone else, you hope to remain physically and financially independent your entire life. And you may well achieve this goal. Nonetheless, the future is not ours to see, so you’ll want to prepare yourself for as many contingencies as possible — one of which is the high cost of longterm care. As you may know, long-term care primarily refers to nursing home expenses, but it also includes services provided in your own home. In either case, though, it could be expensive. The national average rate for a private room in a nursing home was more than $87,000 per year in 2011, according to the 2011 MetLife Market Survey of LongTerm Care Costs. The same survey found that the average private-pay hourly rates for home health aides and homemaker companion services were $21 and

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 9, the county commission voted to ink a temporary agreement with the Business Development Board of Martin County that the two will abstain from legal actions as they talk about their future. “This is a good for both sides to say, ‘We understand we’re in negotiations right now,’” Tim Dougher, executive director of the Business Development Board, said in a telephone interview after the meeting. In a contentious vote at its April 23 regular meeting, the county commission narrowly nixed the contractual payment, and all fu-

Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, joined Doug Smith, Jensen Beach, in dissenting against the other three commissioners. Tensions grew between the commission and Business Development Board over a number of issues, but central was the 2009, 10-year, now $643,000-a-year contract. Most of the current commissioners weren’t on the board in 2009. In a telephone interview after the recent meeting, county attorney Michael Durham said the tempo-

rary agreement is a good start to trying to resolve a torn relationship. “It’s always harder to rebuild something than to build (it new),” he said. However, Durham said whether the county and board can resolve their differences or not, the county is still on the hook to offer something in its place. “The BDB is serving a county function,” he said. “The county is responsible for economic development. They contracted that responsibility to the BDB.” The board was established in 1991. In addition to convincing and helping companies relocate to Martin, it’s responsible to help existing businesses stay and thrive. The Florida Economic Development Council recently recognized the board’s efforts to help local businesses at its annual conference in Orlando, June 26 to 28. It awarded the board top spot for business retention and expansion publications for “Martin Connects,” a small business resource guide. In previous interviews, Commissioner Haddox said successes like that aside, he feels 10 years is too long a contract term. Additionally, Haddox said he disliked the contract’s 30-month termination clause. He’d like it shortened to three. Most importantly, Had-

He added, “I believe that the BDB has become solely reliant on public-sector funding — taxpayer dollars.” Another contentious issue with a couple commissioners is about $50,700 the county paid after a 2010 open-records lawsuit ended with a judgment that the board essentially served as a public body and was therefore subject to Sunshine Laws. Scott’s April motion demanded a repayment for that, along with the board returning excess monies, often called reserves. Dougher said the next date for the county’s $163,000 quarterly payment is Oct. 1, the start of the new fiscal year. He said the board has enough money to operate at least to that date. “I’m confident we have dollars to get through the negotiation process,” he said. That’s due to the board not having some expenses it anticipated. For example, it budgeted to do a small-business grant program to help local companies buy needed equipment for expan-

However, the board learned that the county’s Community Redevelopment Agency was gearing up a similar grant program and didn’t want to duplicate efforts. “If I went through the rest of the year (without a county payment), working capital would be about $240,000,” Dougher said. In addition to the county’s contribution of $643,000, Dougher said the board gets private

The private donors pay quarterly, and the board is receiving some of those payments now. Durham said the county commission would likely be on solid legal footing if it decides to never make another payment to the Business Development Board. However, he said while negotiating it’s best for all sides to refrain from any swagger. “We’re trying to keep everyone’s swords in their sheaths,” he said.

TREASURE COAST — The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast’s shelter is filled to capacity and the intake of cats and dogs continues to climb. To ease the overcrowding, the HSTC is offering cat and kitten adoptions from now through July 31 for just $5. Additionally, the shelter will waive the adoption fees for featured dogs (not all dogs). The normal

PALM CITY — Matthew Kleemann’s like most 20-year-olds. He enjoys a good game of basketball with friends. He likes water skiing, and cycling, too. He likes just about anything athletic. And at press time he’s heading to his first National Veterans Wheelchair Games. The games were July 13-18 in Tampa. The former Navy diver is now a wheelchair user after getting a spinal-cord injury in a car accident. That was in December. Kleemann was injured in Connecticut, and went through rehabilitation at the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Miami Healthcare Systems. That’s where he learned about the growing field of adaptive sports, athletics designed for people with disabilities. “When I got to the Miami VA, it opened my eyes,” he said. “You can do the same things, just in a different way.”

Among events the Martin County High School grad and former lacrosse player planned to compete in were swimming, water skiing, basketball, archery, and handcycling. Handcycles are recumbent tricycles propelled with the arms. That doesn’t sound like it’d be fast, but handcyclers get to speeds matching their twowheeled competitors due to aerodynamics. Kleeman was looking forward to going to the Veterans Wheelchair Games. “It lets you be competitive again,” he said. “I love sports and never thought I’d be competitive again.” His mother, Gail Kleemann, said she, too, was looking forward to Matthew competing at the wheelchair games. “He has amazed all of us in how well he’s handled all this,” she said. “Better than I could. He has some bad days here and there, but keeps plugging along. He looks at what he can do, not what he can’t do.”

emotional burden for your grown children. Unfortunately, many people assume that a federal or state government program will help them pay for their long-term care expenses. However, Medicare pays only a small portion of nursing home costs, and to be eligible for Medicaid, you would likely have to divest yourself of most of your financial assets. Consequently, you’ll probably need to find another way to pay for longterm care. Fortunately, there are investment or protection vehicles designed specifically to help you meet long-term care expenses. Your financial advisor can help

CHAPOGAS from page 10 of expenses. But consider this: People who reach age 65 have a 40 percent chance of entering a nursing home, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. And about 10 percent of those who enter a nursing home will stay there five or more years. Clearly, if you take no steps to prepare yourself for the potentially devastating costs of an extended nursing home stay, you could be jeopardizing the assets you’ve worked so hard to accumulate. Even worse, if you run through your money, you might end up creating a financial and

you pick the option that’s most appropriate for your individual situation. Having the ability to pay for long- term care is obviously important. But other issues may also enter the picture. For example, if you need to enter a nursing home, you may be suffering from a physical or mental disability that might prevent you from handling your own affairs. This impairment could prove disastrous to your finances — which is why you can’t afford to take that type of chance. Instead, consult with your legal advisor to determine if you can benefit from a durable power of attorney — a document that lets you delegate your finan-

cial decisions to a relative, close friend or anyone else you might choose. None of us like to think about spending time in a nursing home or needing round-the-clock care in our own homes. However, life is unpredictable. But even if you can’t avoid the need for long-term care, you can take steps to help reduce the financial strain it can cause you and your family. ADOPTION from page 13 and control facility and as such, must accept every animal that is brought to its shelter. Other animal care organizations have the option of selecting only those animals they wish to take in. “During spring through fall we take in an average of 300 cats and 200 dogs a month,” said director of operations Candice Veach. “Last month we received more than 400 cats and in the first eight days in July we’ve already accepted more than 100 cats. This is the intake on top of the already filled shelter.” This intake has resulted in animals having to share cage space. Other animals are housed

in crates and airline kennels that line the halls and other areas of the shelter, which only happens during times of overcrowding. “We tend to see an increase in animals — especially cats and kittens — being brought into HSTC around the summer every year. This is most commonly referred to as “kitten season,” said Veach. Kitten season usually starts in the spring, increases in late spring and early summer, and ends in the fall. Veach said the main reason for animals being surrendered to the shelter is that the owners state they have “too many animals,” with the majority of that number being cats and kittens. The

number two reason is that the owners are moving and they can’t or don’t want to take the pet with them. The Society also maintains a foster program for animals with special needs. These pets stay in a foster volunteer’s home for two to six weeks to take advantage of a more focused and less stressful environment. Foster volunteers also are utilized in overcrowding situations but in times like this, more fosters are needed. “The shelter is looking for loving families to adopt the shelter pets to free up space for another animal to enter into the adoption program,” Veach said. “We hope this deep discount will give an additional incentive to those look-

ing to adopt.” Dog and cat adoptions are available at the shelter, 4100 S.W. Leighton Farm Ave. in Palm City. Cats also may be adopted at Thrift Store Central, 2585 S.E. Federal Highway, Stuart, and at Thrift Store North, 1099 N.W. 21st St., Stuart. The shelter’s and thrift store’s adoption hours during the promotion are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Wed. from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., and on Sun. from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Each adoption includes sterilization (spay or neuter), an overall wellness check, age-appropri-

Everyone saw it but me.” Kehlenbach switched to the master of divinity program and spent several years completing her program and internship. The ordination process involved many steps, including behavior assessments and interviews. During the process, she became even more excited about her decision. It is unusual for new pastors to be given the charge of developing a new church, known as mission development, but developing process and starting from scratch were what Kehlenbach had done her entire professional life. “They said, ‘We think you’d make a perfect mission developer,’” she said. “There’s a site in Tradition, Florida. We came here in December 2012 and fell in love. We saw the land where the church will be built and it was looking across at Bedford Park. We decided we’d live there. We wanted to be accessible.” The church will be constructed on land at the corner of Southwest Community Boulevard and Southwest Rowley Way. For now, people will meet in private homes. “I’m going to knock on doors and go out into the community to introduce myself,” Kehlenbach said. “I want to meet our ecumenical partners, officials, merchants, the principals of schools, to find out how we can be of assistance and what we can do to be in a partnership with them. “People are looking for a building, but the church is God’s people. Carl and I walk at night and we love seeing the multi-generational nature of the community. I am so excited about the potential. The potential is amazing.” The church will start out small,

with groups meeting for Bible study and prayer. Kehlenbach hopes those who attend will discuss what interests them. “It’s not about me,” she said. “Where do people’s passions lie in service to others? We are called to walk humbly and we are called to be a community.” Ed Williams is council president of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palm City. His church selected Kehlenbach for the position. “It started three years ago,” he said. “We saw a need for a new church. The community was growing. In conjunction with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Florida-Bahamas Synod, based in Tampa, the congregation gave money and we’re continuing to do so.” Williams believes that “Pastor Maryanne,” as she is known, as the right person for the job. “She blew us away when she came in for the interview,” he said. “Her enthusiasm is contagious. We’re very excited.” For Maryanne Kehlenbach, whose journey from banker to pastor is complete, building a new congregation is the best part of her new position. “One of the things I love about Bedford Park is the porches. You are living in your front yard. This is not our home, it’s a place for people to get together and gather around God’s words. It’s the most freeing thing when you really step back and realize that everything is a gift from God and is meant to be shared, not hoarded.” Living Faith Church will meet in private homes for the time being. The events range from

There’s music from a variety of decades, and it should come as no surprise that the show includes adult material. The rest of the month is a little tamer, but the summer movie series includes classics from several eras. On Aug. 3, at 3 p.m. and Aug. 4 at 5 p.m., the cult favorite, “Harold and Maude” will be screened. Starring

STUART — The Lyric Theatre will again present free movies in August, but the hottest month of the year begins by generating some in-house heat with an appearance by Australia’s Thunder from Down Under. The male revue will put on two shows Aug. 1, at 6 and 8:30 p.m. The popular group is a fixture at the Las Vegas Excalibur Hotel and Casino and been featured on “The View.” The men dress, and that term is used

LYRIC from page 20 Ruth Gordon as an elderly woman who loves life and Bud Cort as a young man with a death wish, the black comedy was ranked by Entertainment Weekly as 4th on its list of Top 50 Cult Films. The mood changes Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. and Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. with the Frank Capra classic, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.” The movie starts Jimmy Stewart as an idealistic senator, Claude Rains as a corrupt senator and Jean Arthur as the secretary who’s seen it all but joins with Stewart as he fights corruption. The 1939 Congress denounced the film as “a caricature.” Aug. 10 at 2 p.m. and Aug. 11 at 5 p.m. brings the epic “Ben Hur,” winner of 11 Oscars. The film stars Charlton Heston as the rebellious Jew who takes on the Roman Empire, and features one of the greatest action scenes in the movies, the famed chariot races. The Mel Brooks classic “The Producers,” will be shown Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. and Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. It stars Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, in his film debut. The film was also Brooks’ Oscar-winning directorial debut. “Anatomy of a Murder,” on Aug. 17 at 3 p.m. and Aug. 18 at 5 p.m., stars James Stewart as a lawyer who defends Ben Gazzara, an admitted murderer. He faces prosecutor George C. Scott and

the film has a jazz score by Duke Ellington. “Manhattan,” is Woody Allen’s sort-of love song to New York City. Shown on Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. and Aug. 18 at 2 pm., the film has Diane Keaton, who starred in Allen’s “Annie Hall.” Allen plays a neurotic television writer, which was, no doubt, a stretch for him, and Meryl Streep plays his ex-wife. The season ends with a blockbuster. On Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. and Aug. 31 at 3 p.m., the Lyric presents the epic “Gone with the Wind.” What can you say about Scarlett and Rhett that hasn’t been said before? The movie stars Vivien Leigh as Scarlett and Clark Gable as Rhett; author Margaret Mitchell was said to have had the actor in mind when she wrote the role. Is that story true? Frankly, my dear, I don’t …well, you know the rest. He was perfect in the role, whether it was written for him or not. The Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart, presents Australia’s Thunder from Down Under on Aug. 1 at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $37. Visit the website, www.lyrictheatre.com. Tickets for the summer films are free. They are available only at the Lyric box office and there is a limit of four tickets. Tickets are subject to availability.
