ST. LUCIE WEST — After five years of calling St. Lucie West home, the Keiser University School of Golf and Sports Management will be relocating to West Palm Beach. Keiser executive vice chancel-

lor Peter Crocitto announced the news to students March 18 — the same day school administrators announced they bought Northwood University in West Palm Beach. So, the former Northwood students and the Keiser golf school students will collectively make up the newest Keiser branch. The plan is to transition all

Keiser Golf and Sports Management students to West Palm during the students’ break in August, Crocitto said. The move is not so much about leaving St. Lucie West but about giving the students a better college atmosphere — one that includes on-campus

TRADITION — “Erroneous, erroneous, erroneous,” said Doug Calder, VGTI development and communications director. Despite a report last week in a local newspaper, Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute officials said there are not concrete plans to ask the city of Port St. Lucie for financial assistance. The newspaper report said that VGTI officials would be requesting $5.3 million to cover expenses for the next 18 months, until the institute could find a partner to help funding. “I have no idea where the figure $5.3 million came from. I cannot think of any context in which that figure would have been used,” Calder said. “It’s the same as before. Is there a chance we ask for help in the future? Yes. But, right now, there is nothing new,” Calder said. VGTI has been in financial trouble since the economic downturn in 2007, Calder said. Institute officials may have trouble making loan payments totaling $4 million this year. One is for $2.5 million — due in May, and the other is for $1.5 million — due in November. “If we do submit a request to the city for financial assistance, we expect the request would be strictly limited to short-term coverage of the bond debt which the city of Port St. Lucie issued to finance the construction of

ST. LUCIE WEST — Dr. David Glener of Treasure Coast Anesthesiology started coming to Florida from New York when he was a boy. “We were visiting my grandmother,” he said. “I’d cry when we had to leave because I’d miss my grandmother and Florida.” When he completed his medical training, the young doctor, his wife and infant twins, moved to Florida, where he had been recruited by Martin Memorial Hospital, as it was then known. “We came right out of training,” he said. “It would have been difficult to leave once we were established.” Glener is a graduate of the seven-year medical program at the City College of New York and New York Medical College. housing and being around more students their own age, Crocitto said. “Finding housing has been difficult over the past five years,” he said. Students generally stay at the Marriot Hotel near PGA Village until they find more long-term arrangements, but finding an affordable place for someone on a college student’s budget can be challenging, Crocitto said. Keiser’s golf club students will have the chance to try out for Northwood’s team, which is one of the school’s 14 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics programs. “This will provide our students with a residential life, athletics and facilities on campus,” Crocitto said. Northwood’s campus also has outdoor facilities like a driving range, putting green and chipping area that the St. Lucie West campus lacks. Crocitto said each and every faculty and staff member in the golf management, sports management and exercise science programs will be able to keep his or her job, though a longer commute or fullon move would be in order. Other faculty and staff members will have the option of working at the U.S. 1 branch. Students will be assisted in

the VGTI facility we would not request assistance covering any operating costs,” Calder said in an email. Port St. Lucie city manager Jeff Bremer said city officials have not received any formal request for financial assistance from VGTI officials. Bremer said, if VGTI officials decide to ask for help, it likely won’t be until the end of the legislative season. “I would think they would want to find out how much assistance they will receive before they make a decision,” Bremer said. Reductions in National Institutes of Health funding have been the major issue for VGTI, Calder said. To make the institute more competitive, Calder said directors rebranded it. Prior to July, the primary focus was HIV research, but, now, they also specialize in diseases associated with aging populations to stay competitive and relevant in Florida. About 18.7 percent of Floridians are 65 or older, while the national rate is 14.1 percent. The aver-

If any of them have trouble getting out of a long-term lease, Keiser University will provide van or bus service to West Palm Beach each day. Last year, Port St. Lucie City Council denied Keiser’s bid to purchase Tradition Studios, the former Digital Domain site, for $12 million. Tradition Studios would have served as a new venue for both the golf and sports management school and the Keiser branch along U.S. 1 and Walton Road, Crocitto said. This move does not mean the Treasure Coast will be without a Keiser branch. “Being a resident here (in Port St. Lucie), I have a vested interest, too,” Crocitto said. The U.S. 1 location will remain open, and, in four to six weeks, Keiser officials will make an announcement regarding the university’s future plans in the county. “We’re not losing a presence in Port St. Lucie,” Crocitto said. “We support the local high schools and businesses, and we’re embedded in this community.”

age age in Florida is 38.7, and the average in the U.S. is 36.9, according to 2013 U.S. Census estimates. When news first broke of VGTI’s struggles, Calder said the hope is to partner with a university, so VGTI doesn’t have to just rely on grants. Universities often rely on state or federal funding for research but also get to rely on endowment funds from private donations. If VGTI can’t pay its bills, the city will be responsible for covering the costs. Worst-case scenario, the city would have to shoulder an extra $4.2 million per year on top of the $6.2 million it pays for other failed investments, including the City Center, the city’s supposed future downtown along U.S. 1; Torrey Pines Institute, another biotechnical research institute with financial troubles and Digital Domain, the now-defunct digital animation studio that went belly-up in 2012. The total on the city’s debt service is more than $444 million, Bremer said. In 2010, the city issued $64 million in bonds to draw the institute to the city.

Murphy Senate run opens political possibilities Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Congressman Patrick Murphy aims to become Senator Patrick Murphy. “I’m running for the U.S. Senate for the same reason I ran for Congress in 2012 — Washington is full of hyper-partisan politicians who can’t, or won’t, get anything done, and Florida deserves better,” he said in a press release. Several attempts to reach Murphy for addtional comment were unsuccessful. No other candidate has announced a bid for the seat Sen. Marco Rubio now occupies. Rubio is counted among likely 2016 presidential candidates. Tod Mowery, a Republican St. Lucie County commissioner, said he may run for the 18 Congressional District seat in 2016, but at press time no one has announced a candidacy. “This district is 48 percent Democrat and 52 percent Republican,” Mowery said. “It’s a pretty moderate district. In order to represent the district, you will have to be able to work with both sides.” Mowery is Republican. The recently reminted district embraces St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a sliver Palm Beach’s northeastern side tossed in. Between St. Lucie and Martin counties, there are about 107,000 registered Republican voters. Democrats claim 102,000

registrants. Another 63,000 voters registered in minor parties or without affiliation. That scratches the power of party loyalty found in other districts. In 2014, the district was counted among “battleground races.” Mowery said Murphy, who lives in Jupiter, has done a good job of being a purple Democrat. “He has represented us well in the time he’s been (in Congress),” Mowery said. Fellow St. Lucie Commission member Chris Dzadovsky said Murphy’s experience in a mixed district will help Murphy in a Senate run. He predicts that Florida’s political pendulum is swinging to moderation. “I think you’ll see a move to the middle in the next elections.” Dzadovsky is a Democrat, but isn’t interested in running for the congressional seat. His advice to candidates: forget your party affiliation. “I think we’ve moved from the Republican and Democrat,” he said. “I think people are saying, ‘Do our work.’” “My decision is to remain here in St. Lucie County and seek a third term as a full-time county commissioner.” “I feel I can best serve the interests of county residents by continuing the work I started in 2008 and seeing important initiatives through to their implementation.” Despite the battleground status, Murphy easily held his seat from Republican challenger Carl Domino in the 2014 election with

File photo Congressman Patrick Murphy will be seeking a senate seat in the 2016 election. 151,253 against 101,778 votes throughout the 18 Congressional District. That’s 59.78 percent against 40.22, a 19.56 percent separation favoring Murphy. Domino came off a hard Republican primary that started with eight candidates but had narrowed by the August vote. Throughout the primary, the Republican candidates found little traction in opposing Murphy even among many Republicans, with the small exception of attacking his moderate support for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act - Obamacare in political shorthand. Murphy wasn’t in Congress when it passed in 2010 but often sided with Democrats against efforts to completely dismantle the legislation. Otherwise, the 2014 Republican primary was largely a contest to see who would keep doing what Murphy was, only better. Murphy made the Indian River Lagoon a top legislative and budget priority. Republican candidates said they would, too, only better. Murphy came out foursquare against All Aboard Florida, the proposed high-speed passenger train that would cut a swatch through the district. Republican candidates said they would, too, only better. Former Martin County Commission member and local political activist Donna Melzer, Palm City, said the 2016 election will likely see a repeat of 2014, only with Democrats and Republicans run-

ning as Murphy clones. “It’ll be interesting to see who can say something that’ll stand on its own,” Melzer said. “It’ll be like last time, ‘I’ll be Congressman Murphy.’” The last general election was a sharp contrast to 2012 when Murphy was a 29-year-old political newcomer taking on Congressman Allen West. Not only was Murphy a political newcomer, but he was a Treasure Coast newcomer as well. He moved from Fort Lauderdale and switched party affiliations to run what became an insurgency campaign against West. The race was the most expensive congressional contest in history. Despite having the overwhelming war chest and name recognition, West lost to Murphy by a razor-thin margin. Fewer than 2,500 votes separated the men in an election with more than 331,000 voters. Murphy took the oath of office on Jan. 3, 2013. Melzer, who is Republican, said if Murphy wins the Senate seat, that’ll be good for efforts to reduce discharges of Lake Okeechobee waters into, and to clean, the Indian River Lagoon through the C-44 and St. Lucie River. “I don’t know that we’re losing (Murphy),” she said. “If he goes to the Senate, he has even more

ST. LUCIE WEST — The Mets easily handled the Yankees in a 6-0 victory in front of a record crowd of 8,205 at Tradition Field March 22 toppling the old mark of 7,733 — set March 8 against the Boston Red Sox. Mets fans seemed to outnumber the Yankees fans, but the famous Bronx Bombers were well-represented, also. “It’s the Subway Series right here in Port St. Lucie,” said Michael Salerno, a Bedford Park resident in Tradition, who was a Yankees fan growing up but switched his cap to a Mets one when he started attending Mets Spring Training games as a kid. Mets pitcher Matt Harvey set the tone with a solid 5 2/3 innings outing, allowing just two hits with no walks in the first Yankees/ Mets Spring Training matchup since 2012. For Mets fans, it was a thrilling start, which appeared to be a catalyst for the rest of the game. Lead-off hitter Juan Legares belt-

Eric Campbell all added solo home runs, though they were of the traditional variety. The crowd was into the matchup perhaps more than any other at Tradition Field. Mets Manager Terry Collins said he would welcome Spring Training matchups with rivals more often. “I don’t write the Spring Training schedules, but we should always play the Yankees in Spring Training, in my mind. And, we should always play the Phillies in Spring Training, in my mind. They’re two big, huge rivals – the closest to us. We should play them, and I think you’d always find this kind

of energy in the stands,” Collins said. It was a rough outing for Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia – once one of baseball’s top pitchers – allowing five runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. Still, it was more about getting the chance to see New York’s best square off, said Yankees fan John Salvaggio, who was there with his friend, Salerno. “I come here because I love baseball. The drive to Tampa (the Yankees Spring Training home) is a little long,” he said. “And, Tradition is one of the best fields. It’s fan-friendly. You can walk around. You get a nice feel wherever you are, even if you are a Yankees fan.”

Nursing officer wins coveted award FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — On March 2, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing announced that Nancy Hilton, chief nursing officer from St. Lucie Medical Center, was the recipient of the 2015 CNL Visionary Leader Award. The Clinical Nurse Leader Vanguard Awards, which recognize the innovative work of Clinical Nurse Leader -certified nurses and Clinical Nurse Leader nurse educators, also were presented to Lauran Hardin from Mercy Health Saint Mary’s in Grand Rapids, Mich., and Dr. Linda Roussel from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. “Introducing a new nursing role into the healthcare delivery

mechanism for enhancing care coordination, strengthening outcome-based practice and enhancing patient safety. The Clinical Nurse Leader is a fast-emerging nursing role developed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in collaboration with leaders from education and practice to improve the quality of patient care and better prepare nurses to thrive in today’s healthcare system in any setting. These master’s-prepared clinicians put evidence-based practice into action to ensure that patients benefit from the latest innovations in care delivery. The Clinical Nurse Leader evaluates patient outcomes, identifies risk, coordinates care and implements quality improvement strategies. First presented in 2011, the Clinical Nurse Leader Visionary Leader Award recognizes the long-standing and substantial accomplishments of an individual to the development, promotion, and integration of the Clinical Nurse Leader role in U.S. healthcare. These noteworthy accomplishments are underscored by an unremitting commitment to the education and advancement of the Clinical Nurse Leader role and to efforts that have helped to maximize and sustain the impact

WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM of the role. The Clinical Nurse Leader Vanguard Award was introduced in 2012 by AACN and the Commission on Nurse Certification – the autonomous agency charged with overseeing the Clinical Nurse Leader certification process – to recognize the innovative and outstanding professional performance of a certified Clinical Nurse Leader on the frontlines of improving healthcare. For the first time this year, the Clinical Nurse Leader Educator Vanguard Award also was presented to recognize an academic leader for innovative and exemplary efforts to prepared highly qualified Clinical Nurse Leaders. Hilton has served for 20 years as the chief nursing officer at St. Lucie Medical Center, part of the HCA healthcare system. An early adopter of the Clinical Nurse Leader role, Hilton partnered with the College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University in 2004 to develop a new master’s program to prepare Clinical Nurse Leaders. St. Lucie Medical Center is a 229-bed acute care facility. Since 1983, the center has continually provided quality care to thousands of its neighbors on the Treasure Coast. The combined efforts of more than 400 physicians and more than 850 employees have resulted in one of the most comprehensive healthcare facilities.

GLENER from page A3 and first two years of residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and completed his anesthesiology and pain medicine training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. He is board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine. “I have done what you associate with anesthesiologists,” he said. “Most bona-fide pain doctors are anesthesiologists. I treat acute and chronic pain, prescribe medication, recommend and supervise physical therapy, order additional diagnostic studies and perform certain interventional therapies, including epidural steroid injections, sacroiliac joint injections and up to and including spinal cord stimulation.” Among the conditions Glener treats are arthritis, spinal stenosis, herniated disks, carpal tunnel, bursitis and sciatica and even cancer pain. Glener said that most patients start at their primary care physicians when they have pain. “There are sometimes multiple problems,” he said. “Even if it’s identified, they want to know what they can do. That’s where I come in. Each patient has an individually tailored treatment. I tend to treat patients like my family. I try to take good care of people and do the right thing. When you blend good intentions with ability, good things tend to happen. I treat people the way I would like to be treated. “I am an old-style doctor, a dinosaur. People see me every single time. I get to know them. They are not just a diagnosis. I have to get to the root cause of the pain. It’s not always straightforward. I do a physical exam and I may order ultrasounds and scans. Then I formulate a treatment plan.” Patients who visit Glener’s practice get to know his dog, Charlie, who’s been a fixture at the practice since he was a puppy. Now 11, the dog works

ished early voting days, Congress can reaffirm that commitment by tearing down barriers between eligible voters and the ballot box. We can modernize our process and make it more accessible to every eligible resident by passing the Voter Empowerment Act.” Since 2010, new measures have been enacted in 22 states around the country that would make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to register or vote. As we celebrate and commemorate the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, lawmakers vowed not to sit idly by as these unprecedented laws try to turn back the clock and erect barriers to voting for military, disabled, minority, young, elderly and low-income Americans. The Voter Empowerment Act would: • Modernize voter registration, • Guarantee equal access to the ballot box for all Americans, and • Prohibit deceptive practices and voter intimidation that keep people from exercising their constitutional right to vote. A key component of this legislation is the development of online, modernized voter registration. In September 2014,

Florida’s 67 Supervisors of Elections released a report calling on the Legislature to create an online portal for voter registration. Currently in place in 20 states, online voter registration, according to their report, would reduce administrative costs, reduce data entry errors, and be available to Florida residents during nontraditional business hours — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, the Voter Empowerment Act would require states to allow early voting for, at minimum, 15 days before an election. In 2012, the Florida Legislature reduced the number of early voting days from 14 to eight, which, according to an independent analysis from the Orlando Sentinel, resulted in longer than usual wait times. More than 200,000 eligible Florida voters did not vote in the election because of the waits. According to a Government Accountability Office study, Florida’s wait times on Election Day were, on average, the longest in the country. The average wait time for a Florida voter was 34 minutes, according to the study, with the average Alaska voter waiting just 1.4 minutes. The report also noted that 16 percent of Florida’s voters waited in line for more than an hour.

Blast from the past fashion show at The Children’s Museum FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — Spring is a very popular season for designers to show off their latest collection, but there is a very special fashion show where you won’t see your ordinary maxi dress, or resort wear. On Friday, April 3 from 6 to 9 p.m., The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast will host the event of the season, the “Art to Wear Recycled Fashion Show.”

Students from grades 3 to 12, from all over the Treasure Coast, will be strutting their stuff down the runway in outfits made from recycled materials. These creative kids use the most unconventional fabrics. Spectators may see anything from an aluminum foil pantsuit to a sundress made of streamers, or even an evening gown created from plastic shopping bags. “The Art to Wear Recycled

Fashion Show is The Children’s Museum’s biggest events of the year. Kids have the chance to get creative, have fun, and express themselves in a unique and exciting way,” said Olivia Labrador, the museum’s director of Operations and Education. “Not only do they get to create fashion and art, but they also learn the value of recycling, and how important our environment is!” The Art to Wear Recycled Fashion Show has a fun and inspirational “Blast from the Past” theme this year that is sure to get the creative juices flowing. Designers and models can enter in three

categories for a chance to win first, second, and third place, and some fantastic prizes. The categories this year are inspired from some of the most famous, and infamous, decades of fashion, the ‘50s, the ‘70s and the ‘80s. This is an event that no one will want to miss. The entire family can enjoy, food and refreshments, entertainment, music, and raffle prizes throughout the evening, not to mention the most amazing and inspiring works of art created by Treasure Coast students. WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM On March 14, 1935, shortly before 4 p.m., a trucker found Deputy Sorensen in a ditch beneath his motorcycle on Okeechobee Road, 10 miles west of Fort Pierce. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Last week the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office honored the memory of Deputy Soren A. Sorensen, who died in the line of duty on March 20, 1935. Sorensen became a St. Lucie County Deputy Sheriff on Jan. 7, 1913. Daniel S. Carlton, the second sheriff of St. Lucie County, appointed him. He served as a county traffic officer, escorting school buses and performing other duties aboard his motorcycle. He served as a traffic officer until his death on March 20, 1935, following a motorcycle accident six days earlier. He was known as a “careful and cautious driver,” according to a news article about his accident. On March 14, 1935, shortly before 4 p.m., a trucker found Deputy Sorensen in a ditch beneath his motorcycle on

Okeechobee Road, 10 miles west of Fort Pierce. He was described as being in a semi-conscious condition. The trucker and another motorist brought him to a hospital in Fort Pierce. He was on duty and in uniform, but there were no witnesses to his accident. Deputy Sorensen never regained consciousness. He died at age 56, becoming the third member of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office to lose his life in the line of duty. Carpenter and citrus grove owner Soren A. Sorensen was born in Denmark on Jan. 21, 1879. He came to the United States in 1898. Two years later, he became a resident of the White City area of St. Lucie County. Recently, surviving family members of Deputy Sorensen brought his history to the attention of the Sheriff’s Office. Because he lost his life in the line of duty, it is important to include Deputy Sorensen in the honor roll of fallen heroes of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara said.

Peripheral Neuropathy WARNING The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow.

Port St. Lucie, FL — The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin, and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects. Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 2, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms.

The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.

Figure 2: When these very small blood vessels become diseased they begin to shrivel up and the nerves begin to degenerate. three factors must be determined. 1) What is the underlying cause? 2) How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing that we can do for you. 3) How much treatment will your condition require?

The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1) Increase blood flow 2) Stimulate small fiber nerves 3) Decrease brain-based pain

The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Dr. John Silva, D.C. at the Neuropathy Relief Center will conduct a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy. Call 772-429-8800 to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated. This comprehensive evaluation is limited to the first 12 callers who reserve an appointment.

Dr. John Silva, D.C.

Figure 1: Notice the very small blood vessels surrounding each nerve.

The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here in Port St. Lucie that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neuropathy severity examination at the end of this article) In order to effectively treat your neuropathy,

772-429-8800

ST. LUCIE WEST — Michelle Skinner remembers sifting through thousands of buttons her mother, LaVerne Magadance, collected. Magadance sewed, so she bought many of them herself. Some came from her own mother, who loved to sew and crochet. Others came from a stepmother who owned a thrift store. Skinner, a PGA resident, loved the different shapes, colors and textures each one possessed. They were kept mostly in glass jars in a closet. Then, after Magadance died in 2003, the buttons mysteriously went missing. Last month, Skinner’s brother Jim died, and the button collection was discovered in Jim’s home desk. any longer, Skinner made the buttons into necklaces and is calling them “Buttons from Heaven.” She got some design inspiration when she visited a gift shop with her daughter. “Lo and behold, they had button necklaces for sale, and I bought one and wondered if I could model my necklaces after it,” Skinner said. “It was very helpful because it was mad of wire, so I used those same ideas of hooking wires to latches.” Each necklace’s design and color scheme is unique. So far, Skinner has made about 70. “This is a mish-mash of buttons, and that was the hardest part of making them — putting them together in an artistic way,” she said. She sent the first batch of 56 to women in her family in seven states with instructions not to open the letters before March 21,

Rustico offers authentic Puerto Rican cuisine Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — Rustico may have some of the most authentic Puerto Rican cuisine around. The new restaurant in St. Lucie West is owned by married couple Ruth Lopez and Umberto Torres, both originally from Puerto Rico. While this is Lopez’s first goaround in the restaurant business, Torres has had a restaurant in Puerto Rico for 16 years, he said. His mother, Eneida Alcover, has been in the industry just as long. They also have a family-run coffee business that runs five generations deep. Alcover said she learned from her mother and refined her skills in school. She said she’ll be around for the first few months to make sure everything runs smoothly, then she’ll return to Puerto Rico and continue running her catering business. Food is first at Rustico, with ingredients from vendors in Stuart and Fort Pierce, but the environment is a close second. It’s inviting; cozy. Dim overhead lighting sets the tone, whether you want to relax and have a cup of coffee or have some Puerto Rican comfort food.

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Rustico chef Steve Beerley brings out a signature dish of pork, tostones, rice and beans during the opening of Rustico in St. Lucie West Thursday, March 19. White walls line the interior with walnut-colored tables. Draping the chairs as covers are emptied 100-pound burlap coffee sacks. Off to the right, there’s a coffee

and espresso bar equipped with their family’s own brand of coffee – Café Lareño. A guest and I had the opportunity to try some dishes the day of

TREASURE COAST — “The Last Five Years” is an audience favorite. The musical ran off-Broadway in 2002 and was made into a feature film starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan this year. The show, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, tells the story of the five-year relationship and marriage of a novelist, Jamie, and an actress, Cathy. Cathy’s story is told from the end of the marriage and Jamie’s from the time the couple met. Curtain Call Productions will present the two-person show, starring Ryan Owens and Alicia Tomasko, April 10-19 at 440 Peacock. Director Jake Sanders explained why he chose the show, the stars and the venue. “This show is about two people that, despite their best intentions and really loving each other, it doesn’t always work,” he said. “I love what it says. People are always trying to put blame and fault when something goes wrong. It’s just not working and sometimes, the only thing you can do is remove yourself.” Tomasko, a graduate of Martin County High School, appeared in productions at the school, at StarStruck and at Indian River State College. She was in the ensemble and had a role as an understudy on Broadway in “In the Heights” and appeared in the national touring company of “Evita.”

Tony-winning musical at Riverside Theatre Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

TREASURE COAST — The musical “Memphis” is a relative newcomer to the musical theater canon. The show, with music by David Bryan and lyrics by Bryan and Joe DiPietro, won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical, as well as the 2010 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Broadway Musical and the 20092010 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. It is loosely based on the career of disc jockey Dewey Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play music by African-Americans in the 1950s. “Memphis will be presented at the Riverside Theatre April 7-26. Philip Michael Baskerville plays Delray, owner of an underground black night club in Memphis. Delray is the older brother of Felicia Farrell, an up-and-coming singer. Baskerville spoke recently about the role and the show. “Delray is the older brother who raised her,” Baskerville said. “His goal is to make a life for her by making her a singing star.”

Huey Calhoun, a white Southerner, finds his way to Delray’s for the music. “It’s the music of his soul,” Baskerville said. “It speaks to him. He wouldn’t have had the opportunity to hear it because it wouldn’t have been on the airwaves. It was considered an inappropriate music style. Huey and Felicia begin an affair

THE LAST FIVE YEARS is a contemporary song-cycle musical that ingeniously chronicles the five year life of a marriage, from meeting to break-up... or from break-up to meeting, depending on how you look at it. The show is an intensely personal look at the relationship between a writer and an actress told from both points of view fresh off its release starring Anna Kendrick & Jeremy Jordon, Curtain Call is presenting THE LAST 5 YEARS exactly where it was meant to be seen-Live, up close and personal at 440 Peacock, starring Ryan Owens* and Alicia Taylor Tomasko *appears as a courtesy of Actors Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors

on the left, in front of a rustic wall with aged wood planks. Wagon wheels hang on the wall, and the bar is made from a hunk of tree – made by Torres himself. In fact, he made a lot of the furniture. It really makes the place live up to the name. Coffee is a staple at Rustico, so I had a cup of the original blend - black. I don’t have coffee often, but I knew this was the real deal – a robust flavor you can’t get at home. There are regular salad bar and sandwich menus, but the daily lunch specials change daily, usually ranging from $7 – $12. We sampled from all four that day. First up was sliced turkey breast covered in gravy with a vegetable medley of broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, bell peppers, corn and green beans. The turkey was tender and juicy. We couldn’t pin down how to describe the gravy. It was almost smoky, but we kept going back for more, so that certainly counts for something. Next was a chicken breast with the same gravy, white rice, beans and sweet plantains. Since I’ve lived in Florida, about a year now, I’ve loved sampling plantains from many places. They’re not a big staple where I’m

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer The Plantain Canoe made from a split plantain filled with seasoned beef and topped with melted cheese is a crowd pleaser on the menu at Rustico in St. Lucie West. from in West-Central Pennsylvania, as surprising as that may sound. Well, these were my favorite. They had a nice crisp outside to them with a mild caramelized taste. Perfect. The pork chop that day was served with rice, beans and tostones – smashed and fried plantains. The pork chop was cut thick – certainly filling. The rice was as you would hope – not overly sticky or mushy, and the beans had a nice salty

flavor to go with chunks of pork throughout. The all-star of the sampling was a plantain canoe – a full plantain sliced open and filled with sofrito-seasoned ground beef and melted cheddar and colby jack cheeses. Our server Jerry said it was a regular dish among many Puerto Rican families – a true comfort food you don’t often see in restaurants.

RUSTICO from page B12 “You’re missing out if you’ve never had this.” I’d say he’s right. The sweetness from the plantain, paired with the bold seasoning in the ground beef is wonderful. The cheese is like an added bonus. It doesn’t end there. Lopez’s sister, Sandra, has her own business called Sandra’s Cakes, so she sells those at Rustico, too.

There’s usually tres leches cake, red velvet cake and cupcakes available. We each had a piece of flan, which was sinfully rich. Lopez said she hopes to make Rustico a Puerto Rican staple Port St. Lucie can be proud of. “This is a dream,” she said. Rustico is open from every day from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m., located at 1724 S.W. which Delray opposes. “They’re breaking racial taboos,” he said. “It’s dangerous for the time period and location. There are music and relationship taboos, and it’s dangerous. They’re in uncharted waters. You never know how things speak to you until they happen.” Baskerville, who appeared at the Riverside last season as John Thomas in “Miss Saigon,” said Delray is hostile to Huey on a number of levels. “Huey has infiltrated his territory,” he said. “He built Delray’s from nothing, as a means to a better life. It’s the way he’s grown

up. He’s a product of his environment. It’s hard to accept this man. He’s been taught to fear white people - that they must be trouble. He doesn’t trust Huey, and he feel that not only is he influencing his club but his sister and his music. Felicia is the only family he has. He knows how dangerous the relationship can be, and she’s the only thing he has left.” This is the first time Baskerville has appeared in “Memphis,” but he had the opportunity to see it during its Broadway run. “I was blown away by it,” he said. “It’s got great, amazing music. It’s a story based in truth that everyone could relate to and

it has amazing music and high energy. There’s serious subject matter, but there’s still humor. It makes a great show, with serious moments and light moments. It addresses serious situations while being entertaining.” Baskerville said he is looking forward to his return to the Riverside “I’m very excited about my role and the way they’ve approached the piece. Coming into a new show with an unfamiliar cast,

it’s exciting to see how it comes together. ‘Miss Saigon’ was a lovely working experience and it’s a beautiful facility. It’s great to have a community that likes theater and supports it.”

the movie, while in the show, they only come together once. “Anna Kendrick did an incredible job,” he said. “We’re lucky to have a legitimate star and musical performer. Alicia will tackle it in a way that will be just as good. This will be a Broadway-quality show. In the movie, they added a lot of dialogue that changed the scope of the show. “The big thing (in the movie) is that you see the characters interact. The musical is about people who are never in the same place at the same time. Despite good intentions, they can’t connect, except for one moment that’s so powerful. The movie robbed itself of that aspect. It was a great movie, well-executed, but there’s something to be said about the metaphor of life going backwards and forwards at the same time. Every song is a plea about what they want to happen. You see it more effectively in the live show.” Sanders is in the process of putting the schedule for next season together, but, while he looks ahead, he focuses on the now. “This will be our big success this year,” he said. “People will be talking about ‘The Last Five Years’ for a really long time.”

“We actually have two of Martin County’s homegrown talents in Ryan and Alicia,” Sanders said. “Ryan is an Equity actor retuning to the stage locally for the first time in five years. He’s gained a lot of acclaim as a musician. His career has really taken off, and I’m really excited he’s decided to come back to the stage.” Sanders noted that he had wanted to work with Tomasko for years, but schedules and roles didn’t mesh until now. “It’s finally worked out, and I’m very, very excited to have her,” Sanders said. “It’s really cool, especially with this show. The four people on the team - Ryan; Alicia; the music director, Austin McElwain, and I are all in our early 20s. We all started our careers in Stuart. Austin moved to Orlando and came back for the show and Alicia came back from New York. “We all get to come together. We’re four people who owe our careers and successes to this area. We’ve been really lucky to have success at this young age, and we don’t take it for granted.” The choice of the space at 440 Peacock was an easy one. “I thought 440 provided an intimate atmosphere,” Sanders said. “There’s not a seat more than 20-25 feet from the stage. There’s beauty in watching a marriage so closely.” Sanders said the movie differed from the show in several ways, including the fact that the characters are in scenes together in
