homeless veterans on the Treasure Coast. Nevertheless, Wayne Teegardin, manager of St. Lucie County’s Veterans Services, said that it’s important to keep helping them until there are none. “We identified 42 (in St. Lucie),” he said. “We believe there’re more than that, but we didn’t see them.”

That census of St. Lucie’s homeless veterans was done in January as part of the annual, national Point-in-Time Count. Teegardin said most of the homeless veterans in St. Lucie were living near Fort Pierce. He believes there are more than 42, but that’s probably most of

ST. LUCIE WEST — Golf Digest’s ranking for the first time of three PGA Golf Club courses among the top 35 public courses in Florida is validation of efforts by general manager Jimmy Terry’s team. There have been some other accolades for the PGA Club’s courses recently, but none as significant as recognition by Golf Digest, the 65-year-old granddaddy of national golf publications. The PGA course designed by legendary golf course architect Pete Dye, and which carries his name, was ranked 19th. The Wanamaker Course was 32nd and the Ryder Course tied for 34th. The latter two are both designed by Tom Fazio. The prestigious ranking of the Top 75 courses in the Sunshine State, entitled “75 & Sunny,” is derived from reviews by the Golf Digest Course Ranking Panel. “The last time the (Golf Digest) list was run, we didn’t have a course in there,” Terry said. “This gives credence to what we’re trying to do, striving to provide high-quality golf course conditions, especially smooth and fast putting surfaces.” One of Terry’s first moves was to spend more than $2 million to purchase all-new maintenance equipment to help get the golf courses into better shape. “There’s an inherent expectation of what the golf experience is going

Priscilla Taylor aims to keep Murphy’s seat blue Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Three Republicans have announced their aim to make Congressman Patrick Murphy’s seat red in 2016, and about 10 are known to, or strongly suspected of, considering it. The Republican field for the 18th Congressional District could run out of elbow and leg room. Just like 2014. No matter. Palm Beach County Commissioner Priscilla Taylor aims to thwart all of them and keep the seat in Democratic hands. “I’ve been thinking about (running for the 18th Congressional District) for a long time,” she said. Taylor said Murphy has done a good job since he was elected in 2012, so there was no reason to challenge him in 2014. However, Murphy is vacating the seat to make a run to become Florida’s junior Senator. Marco Rubio, who now fills that seat, is aiming to

become the next president of the United States. The 60-year-old candidate was born in Fort Pierce and grew up there. She said staying on the Treasure Coast was and remains an easy decision. “I was raised by my grandparents,” Taylor said. “All the other kids went to college and left the area. I felt like I wanted to stay close.” In addition to being a county commissioner, Taylor has been a city commissioner and state representative. The former insurance businesswoman said she learned the value of bi-partisanship early in her career. “I love research and I love coming up with things that I think serve everyone,” she said. The most important concern facing the Treasure Coast, Taylor said, is water quality. Taylor said few quibble about what needs to be done to preserve area waterways from the Army Corps of Engineers’ releases of nutrient-rich Lake Okeechobee waters into the C-44 Canal. That water travels to the St. Lucie and

YOUR

Indian rivers. Send the water south through Everglades restoration. She said that’s decided and budgeted. “We need to make sure that money comes to clean the water,” Taylor Priscilla Taylor said. Another issue facing the Treasure Coast, she said, is its slowly disappearing eastern border. “On the East Coast, we have the shoreline that’s steadily going into the water and we need to do something with it,” Taylor said. So far the Florida Division of Elections only lists Democrat John “Juan” Xuna, Stuart, as a candidate for the Treasure Coast congressional district. However, Taylor’s fellow county commissioner and Democrat Melissa McKinlay has announced her candidacy. Republican Martin County

School Board member Rebecca Negron has announced a candidacy. St. Lucie County Commissioner Tod Mowery has also launched a campaign, as has Carl Domino. The former state legislator beat out a crowded primary field to run against Murphy in 2014. Both those men are Republicans. Palm City’s K.C. Traylor — of Florida Not All Aboard fame — has announced on her Facebook page that she is “deeply considering running for Congress.” Traylor is Republican, but appeared in ads for Democrat Murphy. Another prominent name on the list of likely Republican primary candidates is Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith. Hobe Sound businessman Gary Uber is another that might be in the coming Republican primary, as is State Representative Gayle Harrell. Another Republican name from 2014, Alan Schlesinger, is also named among likely candidates fir ‘16. The congressional district covers

ST. LUCIE WEST — The name says it all: Bella Forever. Translated from Spanish, “bella” means beautiful. And the doctors and staff at Bella Forever Laser Center in St. Lucie West offer clients just that: the opportunity to be beautiful forever, through a variety of services and products. Here, in their own words, is the story of Bella Forever Laser Center, as told by its company president, Adrian Garcia: We watched this industry grow

for many years. More than $23 billion is spent annually in laser procedures. For several years we attended seminars and participated in different types of conferences related to beauty and aesthetics in order to start preparing ourselves for the launching of our first laser center. Finally, the moment arrived. In mid-2006, we opened the doors to our first laser center in Mexico City. It was such a success that by the following year, we had five laser centers. In very little time, we became a franchise. To this day, there are several laser centers in multiple states in Mexico. Our goal is the same here in the United States. We are aware of the high standards established in this market, but we feel ready to take on this great challenge. For

Florida must address mental health ‘infrastructure’ crisis

S

ay the words “mental illness” and it conjures up a host of images for many people. Unfortunately, the stigma surrounding mental illness is still alive and well and recent notable incidents are shining an even brighter spotlight on the issue. In March, there was the tragic and deadly plane crash over the French Alps that many attribute to the questionable mental state of the co-pilot. Less than a year ago, actor and comedian Robin Williams committed suicide after a life-long battle with substance abuse and depression. These are heartbreaking and extreme examples of the damage that an untreated mental illness can inflict on the lives of others. As we have just passed the month of May, America’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and Florida’s legislators prepare to reconvene in June to hash out the state’s budget, this is a timely opportunity to share important information with the public on the profound impact that untreated mental illness can have on society. One out of five Americans experience mental illness in their lifetimes, yet only four out of 10 ever seek treatment. It is a pervasive community problem that

YOUR

John Romano demands attention and action. People with mental health and substance abuse issues need to be properly cared for. They need not to feel stigmatized by society. They should feel as comfortable seeking mental health treatment as they would for flu symptoms or a broken bone. Untreated mental illness often leads to avoidable negative consequences. Jails and prisons are being filled with citizens in need of mental health care, costing Floridians more than $1 billion a year for housing and medication

management. Insufficient funding of nonprofit mental health facilities, programs and services, such as those provided by New Horizons of the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee, place additional burdens on law enforcement, the judicial and social services systems. It is much more cost-effective to treat people where they live, assisting them to function within society, as opposed to paying to support them while incarcerated. Florida’s lawmakers are in the midst of big-picture discussions about health care. Serious decisions need to be made regarding mental health and substance abuse services. These long-ignored needs must be properly addressed, not only for the people suffering with mental health issues, but also for society at large. Tremendous cost savings will be realized by investing in these solutions. As the Legislature prepares to reconvene, it needs to take some

solid facts into account. Florida is one of the lowest rated states (49th) in per capita spending for mental health services, in part because Medicaid reimbursement rates have been stagnant for almost 20 years. In Florida, Medicaid pays for only 60 percent of the cost for mental health and substance abuse services — meaning providers have to make up the difference. Florida’s nonprofit community of mental health organizations are in critical need of additional state funding so that we can continue to serve those who have no other place to go and desperately need our help the most. I urge Treasure Coast citizens to contact their legislators and ask them to allocate funding for Medicaid expansion. It is in the best interest of our community to provide services instead of jail time for people with severe mental health disorders. Most of all, it is a prudent use of taxpayer dollars. While these challenges require a significant financial investment in the short-term, the return on that investment in the mentally ill, their families, our communities and society as a whole are immeasurable. John Romano is president and CEO of New Horizons of the Treasure Coast Inc.

May your conversations be most profound

he year was 1855 when John Bartlett published the “First Edition of Familiar Quotations.” It was a small, thin volume of just 258 pages set in a single column with an index, which ran a full 36 pages. His purpose was to record the obligations our language owes to the various authors for their contributions of numerous phrases and quotations which have become household words. The publication contained a collection of passages, phrases and proverbs traced to their sources in ancient and modern literature. The first nine editions were under the editorship of Bartlett, and the ninth, published in 1891, had grown to 1,158 pages. This vol-

BELLA from page 4 this reason, we opened the doors to our first laser center in St. Lucie West earlier this year. We have had great feedback from clients, so we have a few projects in mind for the next several months. We plan to open up our second laser center in Fort Myers in September and a third one in October in Miami. Our experience of almost 25 years in the medical industry of high-end technology was of great importance in selecting the best lasers for our center. Having had the opportunity to work with several technologies we can say, with great confidence, that we chose the best. There is no doubt in our minds that the market was waiting for a laser center that includes the number and variety of procedures such as ours does. The incorporation of six different types of laser procedures, on top of excellent training of our doctors and staff, gives us as a consequence the excellent results we have noticed. In the end, it is client satisfaction that motivates us and pushes us to keep going. Here at Bella Forever, as mentioned earlier, we cover several areas such as: • Facial rejuvenation, 3D, 4D, and 5D for the elimination of wrinkles

• Snoring treatment • Tightening of arms and abdomen • Gluteus and breast lift • Neck and chest rejuvenation • Hyperpigmentation (skin discoloration, such as with age or liver spots) • Stretch mark reduction * Treatment for urinary incontinence * Non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation * Elimination of spider veins * Treatment of onychomycosis (nail fungus) * Black and multicolored tattoo removal * Laser hair removal and more We believe that we owe our success to the fusion of the highest technology available in the market along with the prestige and training of our associated doctors. — Adrian Garcia, president, Bella Forever Laser Center Corp. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The A. E. Backus Museum & Gallery presented a check for $1,800 and a framed A.E. Backus giclee reproduction to Bishop Esperant Lexine of the Independent Haitian Church of Reformation. Moved by the recent tragedy, the Museum’s board of directors voted unanimously to contribute door admissions proceeds, collected during the spring exhibition of Haitian art, to the church. The Museum wanted to help the church parishioners with medical and burial expenses following the devastating March 30 van accident, killing eight and wounding 11 parishioners. Bishop Lexine, who accepted the gift for the victims, was himself critically injured in the accident. The Backus painting presented to the church is of a sunrise on the Indian River and titled, “Dawn’s Early Light.” Famed landscape painter and Backus student, Jackie Brice, interpreted the same painting on the Museum’s west wall as a mural. The museum’s executive director, Kathleen Fredrick, selected the image for its message of hope. “Even in the darkest hours dawn will

time, Bartlett commented that it was the close of the volume’s tentative life, a prophesy which was upset in 1914 with the publication of the 10th edition. I am fortunate to have a copy of the red leather-bound “Centennial Edition,” the 14th edition which was published in 1955, a gift to my deceased father-in-law, which was handed down to me upon his passing. This edition had grown substantially to 1,613 pages. It contained a small note from a friend which read, “May your conversations be most profound.” Now 60 years later, I have no idea of subsequent editions published or as to the number of pages. But one can only imagine the wonderful quotes from contemporaries that they now would contain from our storied and more recent past. There have been several other more recent publications such as The Great Quotations (George Seldes) and Quotationary (Leonard Roy Frank) which include wonderful nuggets of wisdom from contemporary writers, public figures and others. For me, these books represent a treasure chest of written and spoken words of ideas, courage and conviction. From browsing these books, one can gain a vivid sense of what the conflict of ideas has meant in man’s history. They represent a rear window which allows me to peer back through to witness man’s best thinking. For me, these quotations illuminate human thought, but more importantly, enable me to travel down a path of discovery for the creation of new ideas and thought. Benjamin Franklin was one of our wisest Americans. He happens to be one of my favorite historical characters and his wisdom can be discovered in many of these publications. I hesitate to call him a politician, since that word now connotes a different meaning. He was a scientist, diplomat, writer, printer and of course, a great statesman. I recently discovered one of his quotes which I thought might be appropriate as we bear witness to the state of affairs in today’s newsrooms across America. “Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom, and no such thing as public liberty, without freedom of speech; which is the right of every man, as far as by it he does not hurt and control the right of another; and this is the only check it ought to suffer, and the only bounds it ought to know.” This was published in The Dogwood Papers, in 1722 when Franklin was only 16. Later on, in 1776, Franklin was a member of The Continental Congress and was one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence.

YOUR

VIEW

He was 70 years old at the time and the oldest signer. Although Jefferson was the author of the first draft, Franklin was one of the five known as “Committee of Five” who had been appointed by the Congress to work on the Declaration. Franklin’s understandings and beliefs regarding liberty and freedom obviously had been born early in his life and his convictions remained steadfast throughout all his years. Freedom of speech is supposedly guaranteed in the First Amendment of our Constitution, but today it is undergoing significant scrutiny. We now are subject to a new standard which to some extent interferes with our freedom of speech. Everything we say, every word we utter is now subject to something we call “political correctness.” We now have certain words that we must eliminate from our vocabulary and strike from the English dictionary. I have come to the conclusion that we are living in crazy times. Everyone has a camera on their iPhone and every word said is recorded and instantly published through social media and subject to another’s scrutiny almost immediately. It is not just the spoken or written word, but our thoughts and preferences that are under attack and could soon be hijacked. Freedom of speech is the bedrock underlying principle of the First amendment. Speech is the expression of one’s thoughts and ideas. To me it does not make any sense that the government should prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea to be offensive or disagreeable to another. We must have the right to speak what we believe to be the truth regardless as to whether it is considered politically correct or not. At the same time, another has the right to disagree. I suppose it all depends on one’s position on the matter before them. How does one judge the measure or degree of an offensive utterance fairly when it is measured in a subjective manner by another? I found another quote which perhaps best expresses my sentiments with regard to the subject. It was found in a letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1814. “For God’s Sake, let us freely hear both sides.” I have received several favorable comments from my readers of this column and have often been asked See PERRY page 17how

them. On Thursday, June 11, St. Lucie and Martin counties are co-sponsoring the Treasure Coast Homeless Veterans Stand Down. It’ll be 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Port St. Lucie Community Center, 2195 S.E. Airoso Blvd. Other sponsors include CareerSource Research Coast, HouseA-Vet, Stuart, the Vietnam Veterans of America, VVA, Chapter 1041, Stuart, and Department of Veterans Affairs, West Palm Beach Medical Center. “One of the major goals of the VA is to end homelessness among veterans,” Mary Ann Goodman, public affairs officer at the West Palm VA, said. “It’s right up there with the big things VA wants to achieve. We’re making headway — homelessness is down across the nation.” The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans reports that there are about 50,000 homeless veterans nationwide at any time. In Florida there are about 4,500. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reports that there’s been progress in ending homelessness among veterans. It reports that homelessness among veterans declined about 33 percent from 2009 to 2014. Florida had a 36.2 percent reduction in homelessness among veterans in that five-year period. It had about 2,600 fewer homeless veterans in 2014 than in 2009. The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs reports that there are about 15,100 veterans in Martin County. St. Lucie has about 24,100. Overall, there are about 1.6 million veterans in Florida. Lew Jones, president of the VVA 1041, said that attempts to find homeless veterans in Martin County earlier this year were unsuccessful. However, he’s un-

willing to say there are no homeless veterans in Martin. “I know there are some in the county,” Jones said. “I’ve seen them and I’ve talked to them. I’ve been told there are some homeless veterans who use the (Stuart VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic).” Teegardin said there’ll be supplies such as clothing, toiletries, tents and sleeping bags at the stand down. In addition to helping to ease the discomforts of homelessness, Teegardin said the supplies attract homeless veterans who may never enter any office for help. “We give them an opportunity to come in and be screened for benefits they haven’t applied for yet,” Teegardin said. He added, “Also, this is an opportunity for us to discuss with them their situation and see if there’s something we can do to assist them.” Jones and Teegardin said there seemed to have been a small surge of Vietnam and postVietnam-era veterans into the ranks of the homeless due to the recession eliminating legacy jobs and wiping out savings. Teegardin said that by the time the economy was picking up, there was a supply of younger workers competing with the older veterans. Nationwide, unemployment among veterans is slightly lower than average. Teegardin said there are already numerous volunteers scheduled for the stand down and well-wishers should consider donating. Both Martin and St. Lucie counties’ veterans services have emergency funds to help veterans in crisis. Teegardin said donations of cash or gift cards for major retailers such as Walmart are the most helpful for assisting veterans experiencing or facing homelessness. The St. Lucie Veterans Services number is (772) 337-5677. The Martin County Veterans Services number is (772) 288-5448.

Photo provided by Google Maps The PGA golf courses in St. Lucie West were recognized as some of the best by Golf Digest magazine bers-only social, dining and locker room areas in the new clubhouse. Rounds played at the PGA Golf Club’s courses for the fiscal year that ends June 30 are projected to be up 15 percent from the previous year. Those are big numbers against a backdrop of a nationwide decline in golf rounds, which hit a 20-year low in 2013, according to Golf Datatech. A native Texan, Terry had recently served as senior general manager for PGA Tour Golf Course properties at TPC San Antonio and TPC Harding Park in San Francisco before taking over as the general manager at PGA Village, the PGA of America’s flagship facility, in June 2013.

Terry, 54, is responsible for managing all programs, sales, marketing and community relations plans to fulfill the mission and objectives of The PGA’s only owned-and-operated resort destination. PGA Village encompasses 54 holes of championship golf at PGA Golf Club; the 35acre PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance golf practice, instruction, fitness and technology park; the onsite PGA Museum of Golf; and the nearby St. Lucie Trail Golf Club. Terry said he thinks the team has made more progress is his first two years than he expected. “While we are honored by the recognition, we know there’s more work to be done, as our goal is to be ranked high on lists like this each and every year,” he said.

to be like because we have the PGA initials, and we pride ourselves on delivering on that promise,” Terry said. The major transformation at the PGA Golf Club extends beyond the golf courses. The first phase converted the existing golf shop into a model for the golf industry. Simultaneously, the current dining room was converted into the Taplow Pub, think British Pub meets modern-day sports bar. The clubhouse will more than double the size to about 20,000 square feet, with new members-only locker rooms separate from lockers for daily-fee customers. The new design will combine the current “Old Florida” feel of the clubhouse with contemporary style. The existing kitchen will be completely renovated and a 4,500-squarefoot covered patio, boardroom and private dining room will offer new opportunities for hosting private parties and events. The $6 million project is being led by Tom Hoch Design of Oklahoma City, with the full expansion to be finished in the summer. “When the clubhouse is complete, the stature of PGA Golf Club is primed to rise even more as a must-see destination,” Terry said. “And we couldn’t be prouder of the foundation we’re setting for the future.” Perhaps more important than the media accolades, golfers have responded to the improvements. Club membership is up 30 percent from a year ago, Terry said, and the number of PGA professionals who joined as seasonal members tripled this year. Master Jeweler and Gemologist Terry Rieger’s 41 year career had an unusual beginning. As a traditional artist in her early 20’s Terry’s culinary hobby provided her artistic talent. She delighted in designing confectionery masterpieces. If she wasn’t creating exquisite decorated wedding cakes for friends and family, she was sculpting whimsical, mouthwatering candies, or designing sugar Easter eggs with complete 3-D panoramas inside. The occupants of those windowed eggs were meticulously detailed, right down to microscopic whiskers on the tiny Easter bunnies. One of those Easter eggs, a gift to a family friend, is responsible for launching her lifelong career in jewelry. The family friend was a jeweler, and so taken with her artistry was he, that he insisted her designs must be produced in gold. Her mentor, refusing to take no for an answer, arranged for a full compliment of jewelers tools to be delivered, and arranged for her to be the first and only student ever tutored by noted Russian jeweler Constance Osmanki. Terry found herself commuting back and forth to Europe for the next twelve Years. Studying and perfecting her craft in London’s famed diamond quarter Hatton Garden. Designing Horses, is a sad passion, as a child Terry rode her favorite horse Rusty, however years later she was diagnosed with allergic asthma and cannot be near a horse. So she designs them in gold. And as you can see they look exactly like the live ones. Terry’s passion remains custom jewelry: however, and her exquisite designs range from the extraordinarily graceful to the wonderfully whimsical.

Speaker to talk about ‘Florida Friendly’ yards Hansen will discuss and challenge her audience to think about landscapes and about what we like and dislike, and then explore the theories that explain our preferences.

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — On Monday, June 22, at 6 p.m., the University of Florida IFAS Extension Martin County Master Gardener Volunteers, in cooperation with the Martin County Library System, will present an educational event at the Blake Library’s John F. Armstrong Wing in Stuart. Dr. Gail Hansen will provide a presentation entitled “Cultural and Social Issues with Landscape Design.” This presentation will focus on the preference Floridians have for certain landscapes and the barriers to changing behavior toward adopting more environmentally-friendly landscapes, such as “Florida Friendly” yards. Hansen will discuss and challenge her audience to think about landscapes and about what we like and dislike, and

then explore the theories that explain our preferences. She will also discuss the cultural and social norms that influence our landscape decisions, and introduce the concept of “cues-tocare” as a way to overcome barriers and increase acceptance of non-traditional landscapes. Anyone with an interest in moving toward the development of a more sustainable, environmentally-friendly landscape should attend. Light refreshments will be served. Gail Hansen is an associate professor at the University of Florida’s Department of Envi-

ronmental Horticulture as well as an extension specialist for landscape design for the Center for Landscape Conservation and Ecology. Her teaching and extension programs address sustainable, science-based and art-centered landscape design practices that take into account the social dimension of green urban environments, environmental protection and the quality of life for urban dwellers. She graduated with a masters and doctoral degree in landscape architecture from the University of Florida and worked for a private landscape archi-

tecture firm in Gainesville for eight years before joining the UF landscape architecture department. She currently teaches two studio courses in residential landscape design. The UF/IFAS Extension Martin County administers the Martin County Master Gardener program, training and providing continuing education for horticulture volunteers. These trained Master Gardener volunteers provide residents with environmentally sound, research-based horticultural information. The goals of this program are to increase the availability of horticultural information for the community at large and to improve the quality of life for the residents of Martin County through horticultural volunteer activities. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Port St. Lucie Business Women are proud to announce their re-branding with a new logo and the launching of their re-designed website, www.pslbw.com. “The Port St. Lucie Business Women is entering its 35th year,” said President Karen Ostrand. “It was time to create a new look reflective of our history and energy,” she added. The new logo integrates current color and design trends. Lime green and aqua are bright, eye-catching colors that are easy to read. While simple in style, the use of script lettering adds a feminine touch, according to graphic designer Sarah Goff (signaturesbysarah.com). The rectangular format allows the logo to be easily reproduced on a variety of materials, such as t-shirts. A tagline also was added to better define the organization. The new website, www.pslbw. com, is color coordinated with the logo. Lori Finkel, vice president and partner of My Treasure Coast Online (mytreasurecoastonline. com), a Port St. Lucie-based company, designed the new site as a photo-generated website. “There’s an old adage that every picture tells a story,” said Finkel. “There variety of photos show the breadth of the Port St. Lucie Business Women’s activities and details their involvement with the community.” Photos of the Port St. Lucie Business Women in action showcase their community contributions. “We have the opportunity to let the local community know just how much we support them, supplying backpacks filled with

school supplies to underprivileged children, participating in the Relay for Life, providing grants to local nonprofits that benefit women and children and organizing seminars that bring in nationally-known keynote speakers as a gift to the community,” Ostrand said. The homepage features a time capsule video capturing the history of the Business Women, a link to the club’s Facebook page and a calendar. The horizontal navigational bar makes it easier for users to find particular tabs. Committees and contacts are clearly presented. Finding information about scholarships, seminars and their annual Luncheon and Fashion Show is easy to locate. Members and visitors to the website can stay current with Business Women projects and activities by clicking the “In The News” tab. “The new website serves as a communication tool for our members,” Ostrand said. “But just as important, it also serves as a billboard of our activities in the community.” Additionally, interested visitors can go directly to the website to review membership requirements and download an application. “The more the local community knows about our group and what we offer, the better. We want to expand our sphere of influence,” Ostrand said. The Port St. Lucie Business Women is a professional organization dedicated to promoting the interests of business women and serving our community in an effective way. For more information, visit www.pslbw.com. “Like” us on Facebook for updates about our event, programs and community involvement.

During his time at the foundation he created a level of psychosocial support for family caregivers called Leeza’s Place. Currently, Huysman works in provider relations and governmental affairs for a physician-owned primary clinic organization called WellMed Medical Management. Harbor Place at Port St. Lucie, located at 3700 S.E. Jennings Road, is graciously hosting the event. The cost for attendance is

$35 for caregivers and $50 for professionals, with limited tickets available and registration required. Sponsorship opportunities are available. An auction will take place; donations from area businesses are welcome and appreciated. Proceeds from the St. Lucie County Spring Tea will be allocated to ensuring access to community-based care for families with Alzheimer’s disease in St. Lucie County, allowing them to live together with dignity, safety, and care throughout the duration of the disease. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Two years ago, Gerard Lima sent me an email about a film he was making. He had written the screenplay for “Rescue Me,” about the abduction of several young women, as told from their perspective. Lima, a teller at AmTrust bank in St. Lucie West, wanted to film the story in and around Port St. Lucie, his home for a decade. He was prepared to finance the project himself, even supplying meals for the unpaid cast and crew from his own paycheck. Everyone worked evenings and weekends because they believed in the project. For director, Lima chose Jonathan Schwark, who had moved to the area from Wisconsin to work at Digital Domain. In a movie-worthy twist, Digital Doman closed its doors the day Schwark was to begin work. He never was allowed in the building. At the time of the first story, Lima, who also served as producer, was looking for sponsors and backers. After the story was printed, several local businesses, including Harbor Town Marina, the St. Lucie Draft House, Rolling Oaks Cemetery, Carmike Cinemas and the city of Port St. Lucie provided locations so that filming could take place entirely on the Treasure Coast. The film took a little more than four months to make and then 18 months to edit and cut. There was software that had to be purchased to the complete that job, and the director and editor still had day jobs. The film cost

FILM from page 29 $10,000 to make and Lima said that he has the community to thank for keeping the cost down. “It could have cost half a million,” he said, but it cost $10,000 because of the businesses letting us film there for free and from everything else we got from the community.” The film is scheduled for a June 5 release. “We have a company that is set to put it out there digitally,” he said. “I’m really just trying to make back the money we spent to (be able) to make another movie and give something to the cast and crew for all the work they did. Lima expects the cost to see the film to be between $2.50-$3 for a two-day rental and under $10 to purchase. They are hoping for distribution through platforms such as Netflix, as well. Their marketing is done through social media. Lima, who is originally from Brazil, said the experience has been a good one that has whetted his appetite for filmmaking. “It was hard when we first started,” he said. “I had no experience. During it, I met people who mentored me. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s not something I wouldn’t do again. I’m looking

forward to doing another one. A buddy of mine, Jon Aguiar, and I wrote a war movie, or maybe we’ll do a sequel.” The cast and crew include Victoria Yurillo, William Burns, Maria Migliori, Angela Di Pasquale, Valarie Burns, Lima, Martin Fitzpatrick, and the same Jon Aguiar, who plays a villain in “Rescue Me.” In addition to Schwark, who brought cinematography experience to the film, the crew included Le Ann Cheri as assistant director and Joseph Faraci, Josh McDarris, J.J Farias, Rebecca Negron, Renee Minichino and George Catalano. The set decorator, Andrea Lima, who handled props and wardrobe, is Lima’s mother. She wanted to be involved. “When I had this crazy idea to start making movies, she said to make sure you do it and do it right.” Lima said. “Don’t make a movie just to say you made a movie.” Digital Domain was supposed to bring film projects to the Treasure Coast area. Now we have one out of its wreckage. You can see the results for yourself. For more information about “Rescue Me” and for links to order it, visit www.rescuememovie. com and www.limafilms.net.The site to order the film is www.reelhouse.org/limafilms/rescue-me

Dancer sees life lessons in art STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — Ana BoltTurrall, a dance and fitness teacher at Treasure Coast High School, was born in Nicaragua and raised in Spain. She came to the United States when she was 16. Her goal, as a dancer and educator, is to broaden the horizons of her students. “In my classes, I introduced music from all over the world, the treasures the world offers,” she said. “Art is a great vehicle to introduce them to other cultures and who they are as individuals. I want to help contribute to bringing more awareness.” Bolt-Turrall, whose students call her Ms. BT, came to this area last year after she married. She spent 17 years as a dance instructor at Nautilus Middle School in Miami and was named Teacher of the Year there in 2009. She was named Hispanic Woman of the Year in 2011 by the City of Miami Beach and also received a Visionary Award from Miami ArtZine for her contribu-

tions to the arts, education and the community. Bolt-Turrall came to the idea of community service through her parents. “My parents have done so much missionary work in Nicaragua and Florida,” she said “They are hard-working to serve others. They truly believe service is a gift, that if we have been given anything, we need to learn to give back and never expect anything in return.” The dancer began her career at 18, working as a dance teacher at the Fontainebleau Hilton Spa in Miami. While she had dance training, she wasn’t a teacher. “I learned though time and practice,” she said. When I lived in Miami, I got a scholarship to the New World School of the Arts, I studied performing arts and education. I was already working at the Fontainebleau-Hilton. I had a wonderful mentor, Carmen Klepper, who believed I could do this and inspired me to be a fitness instructor. I didn’t know anything about it. I told her I wanted to be a teacher. She hired me and welcomed me. She saw my enthusiasm for teaching

She helped me get my certifications for aerobics and personal training. I was learning through experiences.” Bolt-Turrall got a scholarship to the New World School of the Arts,

Your Career Begins with US!

DANCER from page 31 continuing education through the University of Miami. I took film courses to know how to tap into what kids like. I became more well-rounded as a teacher.” Bolt-Turrall introduces her students to modern dance and theatrical modern dance. “Through dance, you can tell stories,” she said. “With a background in theater dance, I have introduced my students to a different style. You have to open doors and tap into what they’re used to. Theatrical modern offers a different style of movement and vision. If a kid has never danced ballet and only knows popular culture styles (of dancing), you take what they know and customize it and stylize it to what they would accept and appreciate.” Bolt-Turrall said that the style of dancing preferred by some students would be considered inappropriate by the community at large. “A lot of these styles are vulgar,” she said. “It’s what they see in videos. I am not discarding it. I can teach them how something they like can be stylized with technique and grace and elegance and become more appealing to other people to watch.” Bolt-Turrall tries to incorporate lessons beyond dancing. She has done dance programs about the Holocaust and her own version of “Hairspray” that had an anti-bullying message. While she educates her students, it is a two-way street. “One of the things I love is I always learn from my students,” she said. “I don’t shy away from that and because I am so open to it, I’ve become a better teacher.”
