Council member sues city Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

PORT ST. LUCIE — Councilman Ron Bowen is suing the city for about $25,000 in legal fees he spent in defending himself against a Sunshine Law violation that the council declined to reimburse him for. The councilman was accused of discussing, in November, thenRon Bowen city manager Greg Oravec’s employment with other Council members through former city attorney Roger Orr.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Local leaders need to act to stop sober homes from being built in residential areas, according to two area
lawmakers. The issue has been a popular one among Port St. Lucie residents since the City Council approved one to be built at the intersection of East Torino Parkway and Northwest Zenith Drive. The council originally voted against them to be built, but changed their stance
after city attorney Pam Booker advised the council to approve it to avoid a lawsuit. Some of Rep. Patrick Murphy’s, opponents have suggested an amendment to the Americans with Disabilities Act to prevent those

Community fundraiser remembers popular officer Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TRADITION — Port St. Lucie Police Officer George “Lee” Rehm put his whole heart into his work in the community, and, on July 9, that heart gave out. The decorated officer suffered a massive heart attack on July 8 and died the next day. He was 40 and left wife, Amanda, daughter Gabrielle, 13, and son Larson, almost 2. Now the community he served is coming together to raise money to help the family defray medical and funeral expenses and assist them in getting a fresh start with new housing. On Aug. 16, there will be a fundraiser at Tradition Town Square from noon-8 p.m. for the officer who served Port St. Lucie from 2001-2010 and then again from 2012 until his death. Realtor Colleen Koehler sold the Rehms their home, and she and her husband became friends with the couple, attending their wedding. She is coordinating the event, which will have a DJ, bounce house, K-9 demonstration, fire trucks, dunk tank, face painting, a costume contest for kids, bake sale and silent auction with goods valued at more than $50,000. A secure PlayZone will be set aside where parents can pay to have their kids play
all day. The organizers are expecting 10,000 people. “We decided, after the funeral that we should do something and it blew up like a wildfire,” Koehler said. “We’re trying to raise as much money as we can. Lee was the main breadwinner, and we want to raise money to help with the expenses. The goal is to find (Amanda and the children) a new place to live and a year’s rent paid, to get a fresh start. We’re coming together to give her a boost.” Getting people to support this cause was not difficult. The popular officer worked in extensively with young people, investigating juvenile crime and gangs. “When he put on his uniform, his demeanor never changed,” Koehler said. “He was grounded, focused and active in events for children. He was always smiling and he was all about children. He loved children. He has a 19-month-old son who will never know his dad and how wonderful he was. It’s heartbreaking.” Rehm had an outgoing personality, saidMaster Sergeant Frank Sabol,Port S. Lucie Police Department public information officer. “He always had a smile and he was always there to help, even if it wasn’t his call, to take statement or do follow-up. He was a pleasure

ST. LUCIE WEST — Jim Urso is eagerly awaiting his new pants to arrive in the mail. His current ones don’t fit so well, because he lost about 23 pounds in 23 days after going on a New Beginnings Medical weight loss program. Urso, 71, says it was time to lose some weight for his long-term health. “Who knows what those extra 20-some pounds could have done to me?” Urso says. He’s still waiting on his bloodwork results, but Urso said he knows it’s going to be better. “It has to … I sleep better. You just feel better about yourself. I don’t feel as tired during the day. You know, a gallon of liquid weighs 8 pounds. Imagine walking around with those. I carried a couple of those all day.” The program is offered in 23- and 40-day cycles, but a new program is being rolled out that doesn’t have as strict time constraints. The new program costs $149 up front to pay for a physical exam, medical history review, injections or pills, vitamins and books, and $69 a week after that. There is no time requirement for the new option, New Beginnings executive director Bob Han-

China is Japan today It
is well known that China is an economic power in our global world of trade. In our country alone whatever we buy or touch is made in Chtina. This is reminiscent of the 1990s with the trade with Japan. The big difference is that our manufacturing corporations have been and are moving to China. The situation is so bad that the Senate voted to advance a bill limiting tax breaks for U.S. companies that move operations overseas. Most Republicans joined Democrats in voting to take up this bill. But GOP Senators are unlikely to support the final passage of the bill. A growing number of bills have died in the Senate this year because Democrats and Republicans couldn’t agree on amendments. Still our national debt owed to China is over $7 trillion and climbing. To relate the parallel of China to Japan China is slowly buying land, buildings and business in the U.S.A. An example that is very close to home is that there is a Chinese investor buying the Port St. Lucie City Center. This Chinese investor wants to build condominiums, a mega shopping market and a large parking area. At this point, I would like to tell you of a story which I experienced at the time when the Japanese dominated the world trade community. China is following

this same trade philosophy. I had attended the 50th anniversary of the remembrance of Pearl Harbor. I arrived in Honolulu on Dec. 9, as Dec. 7 would have been impossible to board the Arizona Memorial due to the huge attendance of government officials, dignitaries and the president of the United States. Visiting the U.S.S. Arizona memorial was the most emotional experience I believe I have had to date. All Americans, young and old, should visit this memorial. It would not only move their spirit to remember the servicemen who sacrificed their lives to keep us free but also to be on our guard against any foreign power, small

or large. While sight-seeing on three Hawaiian Islands one could not help but notice that the Japanese, young and old, were receiving special treatment. In the restaurants I felt like a second-class citizen. I was not alone with this feeling. The menus were printed in Japanese and English. The street signs, maps, etc., were all bi-lingual. The native Hawaiians I met were totally upset with this catering to the Japanese. They were very adamant at our government allowing the Japanese to invest into our economy and mostly to allow them to buy 30 percent of the Islands and have over 65 percent investments in business establishments. I would like to take a quote from the Honolulu Advertiser in which the mayor of Honolulu said, “I am tired of the Japanese buying up Hawaii, and I fear that our paradise is becoming a suburb of Tokyo.” Incidentally, the Japanese had purchased, among other things, the Rockefeller Center in New York. We heard many things about the Japanese taking over the U.S. and having us dependent upon them, but to personally witness some of these events is shocking and cause for much concern. At times I thought I was in Japan. President Bush Sr. went to Japan with 12 of our top businessmen and appeared, to many Americans, to be begging Japan for a handout. There were many Japanese and also Americans who said President Bush Sr. used this visit as a political move to insure his re-election. This may or may not be true, but one thing is sure: the Japanese will not lift their government restrictions and have an open, fair trade market as President Bush Sr. advocates. In 1989 there was a book Written by a Mr. Morita, a noted Japanese economist, which spells out the economic plan to make the U.S. and the world dependent on the Japanese. Three years had passed and his predictions are almost true. His predictions to capture the man-
ufacturing market, own foreign corporations, foreign banks, foreign land, etc., are proceeding exactly as planned. President Bush Sr.’s statement for an open, fair trade market sounds good, but one must look at the ground rules. If we are to play ball with Japan or any other country, we must play with the same rules. If the Japanese wish to play ball with us, then the rules should be the same. If they cannot or will not have an open fair trade market policy, pay us for their defense and allow equal investment in their country, then we should adapt their rules and progress accordingly. As Lee Iacocca and some very prominent economists such as Lawence Summers have stated if Japan or any other country wishes to do battle economically or otherwise, then we should adopt the strategies accordingly. We should not allow the term economics to overshadow our nation’s security, as both are welded together. In 1990, Toshiba Corp. of Japan sold U.S. hightech infomation to the Russians, which helped then produce the “Silent Submarine.” In 1991 the Japanese acquired a contract to build the computer system for our F15 plane. The Japanese are paying Americans to be their lobbyist in Washington. This has helped the Japanese kill the sanctions that Congress had proposed against Toshiba. This high-pressure lobbying has helped the Japanese kill the tariff bill and to obtain contracts, which has and is jeopardizing our nation’s economy and national security. Many years have passed and global trade has grown. China has emerged a great giant industrial nation due to many factors, but one of the major factors is that the United States manufacturing and corporate companies have moved to China with their technology and shrewd business techniques. Among many factors that enhanced China’s economy are China’s cheap labor and our high corporate taxes in the United States. America’s dependence on China’s business and loans will help China achieve their goal for world trade dominance. China is going one step further than Japan in that it is building aircraft carriers and a massive army.

WEIGHT from page A4 sen said. Patients take daily dosage, via pill or injection, of hCG, a hormone naturally produced by women when pregnant that can help suppress appetite, Hansen said. Patients are limited to 500 calories a day, but that amount can be increased to 800 if the person has an active lifestyle or wants to exercise. The hCG diet, founded by Dr. Albert Simeons in 1954, was published in a book “Pounds and Inches” after he studied the effects of hCG in pregnant women. Hansen said Simeons found that malnourished women in third-world nations delivered full-term, full-size babies. The hCG pulled the mother’s abnormal fat from her body to nourish the baby. This was apparently due to the hormone. He found that his patients taking the hormone, when paired with a low-calorie diet, lost weight and didn’t feel hungry. Urso now weighs about 167 pounds and lost 28 total inches. The program was tough, but Urso said it was worth it. After signing up, he received three books — a program book, cookbook and a maintenance book to record his progress. “The cookbook was excellent.
“The cookbook was excellent. You don’t know what to do with 500 calories when you start, but the book helps. The meatballs are fantastic.” Jim Urso client You don’t know what to do with 500 calories when you start, but the book helps. The meatballs are fantastic,” he says. Throughout the cycle, Urso says he learned how to break bad habits with the help of the New Beginnings staff. Hansen says each staff member has gone on the diet, so they know what works best. Despite the hormone treatment reducing his appetite to nearly nothing, Urso said he felt the urge to eat more because that’s what he normally did. “I used smaller plates. You put your food on a big plate and think, ‘This is all I’m going to eat?’ Even though you’re not hungry, you get those urges,” he says. Learning to handle the mental aspect is what got him through it, he says.
Stepping on a scale every day and seeing results was another important factor, Urso says. “Every day I’d see my weight go down. I would a hit a two- or three-day plateau and (then) lose a couple (pounds) the next day,” Urso says. Urso is now in a maintenance stage, where he maintains his calorie limit, but no longer takes the hormone. He’s added some light exercise to his routine to help keep the weight off. “Who knows what the future’s going to hold? But I think I’m heading the right direction,” he says. “I can’t wait to get my pants.” For more information on New Beginnings, visit www.NewBeginningsMedical.com or call the St. Lucie West office at (772) 224-8855. CHINA from page A6 Why? China not only wants to be a world economic power, but a world superpower. The bottom line is our nation’s security and economic survival. We have to beat the enemy, whether it be business competition or the battlefield. This is an economic war and as in any war, the government, business and the people must become equal partners. I realize the trade problems are very complex, and we as individuals feel helpless. It has been suggested by some of our prominent economists that the people should elect officials who are not “soft-liners” on the Chinese issue. We should write letters to our current elected officials and let them know that we should adopt the same trade policies and practices the Chinese have, and we should work closely with business and industry to produce products made in the U.S.A. A last important point is to encourage, by whatever means necessary, big business not to be international in their thinking and give more consideration to our country’s needs. The textile industry, the auto industry and
the oil industry are some examples of big-business greed. They are those businessmen who look abroad for cheap labor and/or sell raw materials to the highest bidder. We need to apply pressure by boycotting, pass laws, have government regulations or whatever will force big business to be more responsible to our people’s needs and our nation’s survival. Our future and our children’s future depend upon us being militarily and economically No. 1. Pressure your elected representative before it is too late. A quote from a patriot, Thomas Jefferson: “Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves therefore are its only safe depositories.” Domenick Scarlato served in the U.S. Navy on active duty from 1944-48 and later in the Naval Reserve and National Guard. He holds a doctorate of education and because of his work in special education, has been involved in an advisory capacity while changes to national mental health care policies occurred over the last 50 years. He has been a St. Lucie West resident for 14 years.

with addictions as being classified as disabled, something only a Congressman would be able to do. But, it may be a lost cause to try to change a definition that aligns with the medical community’s definition, as well. “We’ve looked into the situation extensively,” Murphy said. “This isn’t something handled at the federal level. This is a state and local government issue.” Murphy said he’s doing what he can, though and has met with residents to let them know as much. He said he’s working on getting the Department of Justice to work with local governments so the threat of a lawsuit doesn’t deter local leaders from taking a stand against sober homes. “As long as they work to make sure they fit in with the community, those lawsuits shouldn’t go anywhere,” he said. The best route is the state one, Murphy said. Sen. Joe Negron said he’s well aware of the issue and most re-
cently visited the proposed site in Torino July 31. “It’s hard to imagine a worse spot to pluck down a busy commercial enterprise,” Negron said. “Midway Road is a better spot. That’s where it belongs.” While the ultimate decision to allow such a building to be made lies with local governments, Negron said he’s going to see what the state can do. “My ability to be involved is limited,” he said. A Senate bill that would have put more restrictions on sober homes last year failed to make it to the appropriations floor that was headed by Negron. Negron said there wasn’t time to get to the bill. His next move will be to look into licensing restrictions, Negron said. At a meeting with Torino residents in late June, Mayor JoAnn Faiella said her hands were tied after the council voted 3-1 to allow the sober home to be built. She had the lone dissenting vote. The council could have voted against it, but Booker said the city would have likely lost a lawsuit.

A criminal misdemeanor was dropped and Bowen pleaded no contest to a civil infraction, which resulted in him paying a $300 fine and $50 in court fees, according to court documents. Bowen requested the fees be paid back to him, but the council voted it down 4-1 June 9. Bowen was the only one who voted in his favor. The complaint, filed by Richard Kibbey of Kibbey Wagner, says Ron Bowen is entitled to the fees from the case because the criminal charge was dropped. Florida stature 286.011(7) reads, “Whenever any member of any board or commission of any state agency or authority
or any agency or authority of any county, municipal corporation, or political subdivision is charged with a violation of this section and is subsequently acquitted, the board or commission is authorized to reimburse said member for any portion of his or her reasonable attorney’s fees.” The statute allows fees to be reimbursed, but does not appear to guarantee the fees be paid. Barbara Kibbey, one of the lawyers working the case, said case law and the statute support Bowen. “Under Florida Law, Mr. Bowen should be reimbursed, regardless of any personal issue with the council,” she said. Treasure Coast homeowners get congressional help with lenders Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PORT ST. LUCIE — About 300 people attended a mortgage help event at the Port St. Lucie Community Center in hopes of getting some advice from lenders. The event was hosted by Hope Now, a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit organization, Aug. 6 for the first time in Port St. Lucie. In a given year, the group makes about four trips to Florida but usually to larger cities, according to the Hope Now’s executive director, Eric Selk. “We usually hit the larger markets,” he said. “But, the Congressman brought us here today.” Residents met one-on-one with lenders to find out what their options were. The goal was to see if they

qualified for either a modified loan, a term extension or a lowered interest rate, Selk said. U.S. Rep Patrick Murphy said St. Lucie County was among the worst areas hit by the economic decline starting in 2007, and the housing market struggled as a result. “Throughout this, there were some instances where people were taken advantage of by banks,” Murphy said. “There are fixes, though. A lot of these things are simple.” The median home sale value of single-family St. Lucie County homes was $229,900 in 2007. Last year, it was $120,000, according to a Florida Housing Data report. There is some good news, though. The County Clerk’s office staff said property sales have been increasing for the past four months, for a 16 percent increase since last year. Home values are also on the upswing. They are expected to increase 2.5 percent, St. Lucie County Property Appraiser Ken Pruitt said.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeals awarded a temporary injunction in favor of St. Lucie County Judge Phillip Yacucci Jr. over Concerned Citizens for Judicial Fairness, a group funded largely by a Ticket Clinic attorney. Yacucci’s opponent in the Aug. 26 primary, Stephen Smith, was also named in the lawsuit. The injunction temporarily shuts down a website that contains information Yacucci says is false. With the suit, Yacucci is also looking to get money for damages from defamation, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress by the defendants. The information, distributed
in fliers and on a website, said Yacucci was accused of battery of his wife, aggravated assault with a firearm, unlawful compensation and failure to pay child support, all which allegedly took place after a volatile child custody battle after a divorce between Yacucci and then-wife Tracey McGraw in 1989. “Back then, some things were said in court that wouldn’t have been said had we not been trying to get custody of our kids,” Yacucci said. “There’s no hard feelings from either party.” Smith is trying to bring up Yacucci’s past in hopes of swaying voters, despite those alleged events happening over 25 years ago, Yacucci said. The website and fliers reference things Yacucci was accused of doing, but most were found to be inconclusive or thrown out at

the time, but the website doesn’t show that, Yacucci said. “None of it is true,” Yacucci said. “This is a cowardly attempt to suggest and get people to think that these allegations are present. It’s a shame they are stooping so low.” In the complaint, Yacucci said the defendants distributed the information, despite knowing it was false. The injunction is to prevent the material from being shown and also to prevent the defendants from publicizing it in television ads. The suit says the defendants purchased television time slots to show the commercials, which were already on YouTube. Smith said he’s aware of the lawsuit, but hasn’t had time to read it to his liking. He claims he had no role whatsoever in the information being posted but that it’s true. “I can neither speak for the Committee nor the Web Site, but, from what I have seen and read, the allegations speak for themselves. He certainly was accused of the conduct – and there are supporting documents including a State Attorney re-

port,” Smith said. “It is using the courts for political gamesmanship. It is deeply concerning. From what I know about the case, and I have yet to be served, I think the lawsuit is a pathetic attempt at distracting the voters from Mr. Yacucci’s history of poor decisions,” Smith said. Yacucci and Smith have had a contentious race for the Group 4 judge seat in St. Lucie County. Yacucci said he thinks Smith is targeting the seat because Yacucci found Smith in contempt of court in March for apparently lying during a DUI trial. Yacucci sentenced Smith to five days in jail.

File photo John Textor, executive chairman of the board for Pulse Evolution, headquartered in Port St. Lucie, created the apparition of Michael Jackson that performed at the Billboard Awards in Las Vegas on May 18. Textor was the CEO of Digital Domain in Tradition before it went bankrupt in 2012. I’m going to fulfill my promises until the city tells me otherwise,” he said. “When someone wants to know about that place, they call me, and I tell them all about it.” Textor’s new company, Pulse Entertainment, is located in Tradition Square, about a half-mile from Tradition Studios. It specializes in creating digital humans that are to be used in the medical education, defense training and entertainment fields. The compa-
ny is looking to expand, Textor said. He hasn’t placed an offer to buy the building back, but Port St. Lucie Councilwoman Michelle Berger said she thinks he’s positioning himself to be a tenant. “I think he’s got his investors lined up and his front men in place to get in there,” she said. “If he wants to be there, he’ll be there. I can’t do anything about it.” Councilwoman Shannon Martin
said the council won’t be factoring in his potential involvement for future plans. “He’s irrelevant,” Martin said. At a special council meeting Aug. 1 to discuss bids for the building, Berger said she’s leery of any potential buyer who associates with Textor because of the past failure. Among the bids the city received so far, only James Hall, of Jupiter, is believed to have made contact

TRADITION — The man who was largely responsible for Tradition Studios becoming an empty shell of its former self wants to help the city that is now paying back the $39.9 million in bonds from Digital Domain Media Group’s failure. Port St. Lucie’s annual bill is $3.4 million. The company’s former CEO, John Textor doesn’t think it’s fair that he’s viewed as the bad guy but admits he did some things wrong. “One of my mistakes was bringing in the California part of the business that we knew was suffering,” the Jupiter resident said. “It was not some ponzi scheme to pay off the California debt.” The Tradition-based company bought 51 percent of the California-based Digital Domain company before opening in Tradition Studios, Textor said. Another mistake was paying back loans to a lender that threatened to default on the Digital Domain, Textor said. “The default was not actually going to be a default. We did raise that money, but the lenders refused to wait and demanded the loan be paid back as soon as we went public with the company,” he said. Those mistakes, along with many others and a bad market led by shady investment deals is what brought the company down. But, Textor said he can still help the city. On his own account, he already has. “Two-thirds of the people who toured that building are because of me. I’m going to help this town.

Blackamoor Exclusively designed and handmade.....
Moors jewels are the kind of jewels that came from ancient Venezia, particularly from the time when the Serenissima Republic was fighting against Moor and Turks. This kind of jewelery is set with gold and many kinds of precious stones, such as the diamonds & Rubies, The Blackamoor was not created to pay homage to the Moores, but to define some kind of link between Shakespearian tragedy of Othello and the sophisticated art of Venetian goldsmiths. There are many different kinds of luxury moretto jewels from the small ones customers appreciate most nowadays, to the deluxe versions from a past era. Luxury moretto jewels are a kind of jewel with a particular form. The luxury diamond Blackamoor includes, in addition to the different designs created by Venetian masters goldsmiths, a kind of vintage dress and head covering. The luxury diamond moretto is a very special kind of jewel and you cannot find it in any other place in Europe UNTIL now- Diamonds By Terry was asked to recreate a Blackamoor for a professor in Washington. She contacted a few Antique Dealers to find original carved heads, however several dealers sent heads and Terry only needing one, went ahead and bought them all. After creating the one for the client Terry, being of Italian, descent designed many other Venetian blackamoor jewels. This Blackamoor, (Top Right) exclusively designed and handmade by Diamonds By Terry is 52.13 DWT, yellow gold 14kt. Pave’ set 3.12ct. Diamonds with 1.38ct. Rubies and a 25ct. Star ruby. Deputy to ride for sixth time in annual 9/11 event ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Deputy Sooner Means will ride for sixth time in Tour de Force Memorial Bike Ride Sept. 11 to honor the 9/11/2001 survivors and families and raise money for officers killed in the line of duty, according to Sheriff Ken Mascara. Detention Deputy Means, a 14year veteran of the Saint Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, has made her name synonymous with riding for good causes since 2005. She has ridden in the MS 150, a fundraiser for those suffering from multiple sclerosis, and has logged thousands of miles on her bike for charity.
“2014 will be the sixth consecutive year in which Deputy Means is participating in the Tour de Force Memorial Bike Ride,” said Mascara. “Her tenacity and perseverance in support of the 9/11 victims and their families symbolizes what is best at the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.” The Tour de Force, a 280-mile bicycle ride that will take place on Sept. 11, continues to inspire Deputy Means by defining for her the sense of belonging to something bigger than one’s self, a sentiment she brought with her from her service to her country in the U.S. Army, and now shares with her brothers and sisters in the criminal justice profession at the Saint Lucie County jail. On Sept. 11, 300 participants
from across the United States, Canada and Europe will depart from the Boston Marathon finish line and travel 280 miles on bicycles to Ground Zero, New York City. People can honor the memory of those lost on 9/11/2001 and help families of fallen officers by mailing a check or money order payable to “Tour de Force” and writing “Deputy Sooner Means” in the memo area. The mailing address is: Tour de Force, P.O. Box 395, Washingtonville, NY 10992. Contributions are charitable and tax-deductible under subsection 501(c)(3) of the U.S. tax code. Contributors can also donate over the Internet by going to http://grouprev.com/sooner or http://www.tourdeforceny.com/

Each participant is required to raise $1,250 in sponsor funds, provide his or her own transportation, including shipping the rider’s bicycle to and from the event and provide for his or her own meals. Tour de Force provides lodging during the actual ride. Tour de Force is a nonprofit organization that raises money year-round to assist families of officers killed in the line of duty. Tour de Force uses the “Officer Down” memorial page (odmp.org) to help select families in need, and also considers families that are nominated by agencies and ride participants.

PGA VILLAGE — Marketing expert Russell Halsted grew up poor in New Mexico. He wanted to avoid a lifetime of manual labor and taught himself calligraphy when he was 16. Calligraphy? “It was not a means to an end,” Halsted said. “What I realized was that it was something everyone appreciated. If I sent a letter, I got a call from the person I sent it to, saying it was so beautiful. When you do calligraphy, if you misspell something, you have to start over. I got a dictionary and
started learning a new word every day. I learned how beautiful words were. It led to designing type and logos and then to being a brand developer.” Halsted went on to design uniforms for more than 140 colleges as well as sports memorabilia for professional athletes from Troy Aikman to Joe Namath. He worked with Reebok in their licensed apparel division. He also had a successful career in the corporate world. “I’ve done more corporate work than sports work, but no one wants to talk about the book I did for AT&T,” he said. “When you start talking about sports

It’s a great irony that I’m known for sports but made most of my living through corporate branding.” Several years ago, Halsted decided to concentrate on the marketing branding of what he calls ‘luxury brands’ through his company, Firebrands. “Your brand is everything connected with you and your public personality,” he said. “A luxury brand is a person or product of quality. There’s Dave’s corner market. I can design a new logo, design for the bags and uniforms. I still do that occasionally. A luxury brand is more like a Fresh Market, which has a higher perceived value. “But what if Dave wanted corner markets all over Florida, 15 at the end of five years? That, to me, is a luxury brand. I can map out strategy for franchising, if that’s wanted, or build a series of prototypes, a business plan and a strategic plan to build on incrementally. I can tell him how to brand it and merchandise it. That’s exactly what I do best, the strategy behind the brand.” Halsted counts former world No. 1 tennis player Mats Wilander as a ‘luxury brand’ client. The tennis champion started Wilander on Wheels or WOW,

It reflects who he is. He’s totally world-class. The best sportsman, the nicest guy, the ultimate gentleman.” Now Halsted is turning his sights on his new hometown. “This area needs to have as much commerce brought in as possible,” he said. “I was a guest lecturer at Indian River State College, and it broke my heart, getting off the interstate and seeing the barren buildings. Either they built them and no one came or they went away. “With our weather, we’re a sports mecca. We have golf courses, many of which need to be rebranded. We have tennis, baseball summer camps, spring training. I could do amazing things with this. “We have tons of professional athletes who live around here, and I could bring athletes to the area for appearances. No one would gripe about coming to Florida. Everything we can do that is a positive message that it’s fun and there are cool things and cool people in the area adds up to a better message.”

Halsted said that his experience is invaluable, but he brings something else to the area - a new pair of eyes. “Somebody new doesn’t see
what used to be,” he said. “I don’t care about what used to be, I look at today. It’s still a wonderful area. I’d love to bring professional athletes here for appearances, teaching and speeches.” Halsted has one more passion.
Urgent & Family Care
The shelf-life of a professional athlete is short, and many find themselves without resources for the long haul. “While they’re in the career, they don’t have time to develop a business to retire into,” he said.” I build businesses for them so
they can retire to something they’re passionate about, make a great deal of money and transition from player to spectator.” Russell Halsted and the Firebrands Design Group can be reached at (954) 589-8333 or www.firebrandsdesigngroup.com.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Sunrise Theatre has announced its 2014-2015 season, and, as always, there is something for every taste, including a new Broadway series. The season opens Oct. 31 with jazz drummer Jason Marsalis, a member of the famed New Orleans jazz family. Dave Mason’s Traffic Jam appears Nov. 20 and Kenny Rogers’ “Christmas and Hits through the Years” comes to town Nov. 28. Gene Hull the town’s people, the ease of life here and the relative calmness compared to living in major metro areas, were really valued. But it wasn’t until the day I discovered the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society that I began to feel connected. For the first time, I had a local connection to the arts at a professional level, though I no longer played the sax. I discovered a nucleus of civic-minded musicians and non-musician volunteers who were deeply concerned about sharing the joy of America’s original art form - jazz. I joined the Society and later became a member of its board of directors. To my mind the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society is a remarkably vibrant and forward-thinking organization. It has become the most active jazz organization in the state — with more events, a wider range of programs and a quality of goals consistently higher than any other such organization. It reaches into the schools of four counties, stages hundreds of Jazz Jams, produces blues programs free to

he Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society continues to surprise me. Let me explain. I moved to Fort Pierce 12 years ago after more than 20 years in the cruise industry. Living in Miami, as the entertainment producer for Royal Caribbean Cruises, I traveled to entertainment venues all over America and to most major cities of Europe, constantly seeking new talent and new production ideas for our ships. I seldom missed a Broadway show or a Vegas production and probably have seen 25 different ice shows. (Yes, there are ice shows on many Royal Caribbean ships.) My job was to find and direct top creative talent for most every aspect of shipboard theatrical production. Prior to that, I was a musician who played, for many bread and butter years, countless roadside joints and Hollywood Inns before reaching the world of Duke Ellington, Tex Beneke, Vic Damone, the Newport Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, Hollywood Bowl, Las Vegas hotels, Johnny Carson, symphony orchestras and many major TV shows. But when I retired to Fort Pierce, after years of a stimulating cultural life, I experienced an unexpected let-down. The bottom of the kind of cultural appreciation I was used to had suddenly dropped out. For a year or so, I found it difficult to assimilate into the community. I lost myself in writing — not a bad experience. (Five books to date.) Of course the friendliness of

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Inner Truth Project is hosting a film night for the showing of “Miss Representation” on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 6 p.m. at the Inner Truth Project Center , 2190 Reserve Park Trace, No. 13, Port St. Lucie. Tickets cost $5 at the door. The movie is appropriate for both men and women, for ages 14 and up. For more information, contact executive director Mindi Fetterman at (772) 2004599 or by email at innertruthproject@gmail.com. Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, “Miss Representation” uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and
directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. “How the media portrays women shapes our political culture as well as our beliefs about our sexuality and our beauty,” Fetterman said. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. “Those who come to see this movie will find their perspectives altered, one that may well create a desire to do more to change and

challenge the status quo,” she added. In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3 percent of positions with clout in mainstream media, and 65 percent of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors. Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers,
activists and academics, like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as “Miss Representation” accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective. The Inner Truth Project Center provides an environment where survivors of sexual abuse, violence or rape can bravely share the truth about their experience and receive the help they need to find strength, hope and health ... one story at a time.
