TRADITION — According to recent Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings, Pulse Evolution Corporation, the Port St. Lucie digital arts studio chaired by ousted Digital Domain CEO John Textor, is receiving a $20 million investment from Swiss entertainment company Holotrack AG.

Delivered in the form of $20 million shares of the company’s common stock, sold at $1 each, the investment, according to the filing, is earmarked “to develop, finance and distribute, “The King,” a full-length theatrical production featuring Virtual Elvis Presley.” Pulse Evolution Corporation has made a name for itself by revolutionizing the once sci-fi technology of holographic imaging. In 2012, it was technology de-

signed by Pulse artists, at that time working under the Digital Domain shingle that brought famed rapper Tupac Shakur to life at the 2012 Coachella concert. In 2014, Pulse Evolution Corporation brought Michael Jackson back to life at the Billboard Music Awards and now, if all goes right, the company will add Elvis Presley to their repertoire of resurrected superstars. Textor, most known along the

Treasure Coast as the man behind the now defunct Digital Domain Studios deal says the funding is an indication that his new company is doing things right. “The amount of new support we are seeing for our company really confirms that we are on the right track as the global market leader in a new form of entertainment that was born right here in Port

Why did I wait so Long?” Deafness is a funny thing...unlike losing our sight or our ability to walk, those of us who can’t hear don’t realize we can’t. When you can’t see, you walk into walls. When you can’t walk, you fall down. It’s pretty cut and dry as to what the problem is, even to the one with the problem. With hearing, however, we hard-of-hearing folks blame everyone else. “Speak up! Stop mumbling! It’s too crowded in here, I can’t hear anything!” What’s worse, our friends and family get annoyed with us. Now, when most of us think of hearing aids, we envision great-grandpa wearing these big, bulky things that stick out of the ears, make whistling noises, and generally contribute overall to the “elderly” stereotype. Since I am in my forties (and pushing fifty), the last thing I wanted was to be associated with was something to make me appear older. Imagine my surprise and delight to see that hearing aids these days are (dare I say it) downright cool-looking! Joe showed me a variety of styles…all of which are virtually invisible when looking at someone straight on. You may wonder how someone who could already hear “okay” could possibly be so affected by what would seem like just a slight boost in audio. Well, let me explain something…a hearing aid is not simply a device that increases volume. Those cheap things advertised on TV do that. A real hearing aid has the technology to make sounds sharper and crisper without necessarily making them louder. In fact, my hearing aid has the capacity to bring down the background noise in a crowded room while bringing the voices I’m trying to hear to the forefront! I have no earthly clue how, but it does. I have a little remote control that gives me the ability to adjust my hearing aid to the environment I’m in at the time, allowing me much greater control over how I hear things in various situations. Those of you with perfect hearing take this for granted…its like breathing for you. But trust me when I say that

TRADITION — Sharon and Steve Corcoran have been a team for five decades. The couple, who live in Vitalia, recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. Sharon spoke to me one night and Steve, the next, as he was a little under the weather, but it was clear that no matter where they are or what they’re doing, each is thinking of the other. The couple spent most of their lives in New Jersey, where they raised three daughters. Sharon started a school and did mission work for a children’s ministry in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in India. “We brought the ministry to the teachers and pastors,” she said.

“We were able to bring resources and had the ability to use the resources in a creative way to teach the teachers and take it to the villages. We would support them and had a ball watching.” Sharon does children’s sermons at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palm City and at Living Faith Church in Tradition. For her 70th birthday, she received an unusual gift. “As a surprise, my husband gave me a whole set of biblical puppets to use with the children,” she said. “I use them at Immanuel or Living Faith or wherever I’m called.” Steve joined General Electric in management training after he graduated from the University of Dayton. He worked under the legendary Jack Welch, who did

Aerobatic talent unleashed “Dear Mr. & Mrs. Kloorfain, due to a color deficiency we detected in the eyes of your son Mitchel, we do not anticipate he seek a career in anything involving being able to discern color.” This was how a letter to my parents from my elementary school nurse in Mt. Vernon, N.Y., in the early 1970s started. It went on to specifically imply that this deficiency would affect my abilities to work as a pilot or a photographer and to definitely not seek any

direction in those arenas. Fast forward10 years and I am already established as an up and coming photographer in my area. Fast forward 20 years later to the Mitch Kloorfain early 2000’s and I am just starting to accumulate air time flying with and photographically document-

ing some of the most talented pilots on the planet as they tour through our communities in the air shows they perform at. OK, so I am not actually flying (except for once time last year) and I am a passenger, but my inability to perceive colors hasn’t hindered me in the ways I was told as if it was carved on tablets and handed down a mountain from God himself.

All Politics Is Local

F

ederalism was established by the constitution and is a principle of government that defines the relationship between the central government at the national level and its constituent units at the regional, state, or local levels. Under this principle of government, power and authority is allocated between the national and local governmental units, such that each unit is delegated a sphere of power and authority only it can exercise, while other powers must be shared. Each state has its own constitution; however all provisions of their constitutions must comply with the U.S. Constitution. Both the national and state governments are granted certain exclusive powers. The federal government for example can print money, establish an army and a navy and declare war. Certain powers are reserved for the state and include; establishing legal drinking age, issuing driver’s license and providing for public health and safety. The 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified as part of the Bill of Rights on Dec. 15, 1791. It is the key amendment reinforcing the idea of federalism. In other words, that unless the Constitution specifically gave a power to the federal government or denied it to the states, then it was reserved for the states. Over time, the federal government has taken more power from the states due to amendments such as the 14th amendment (1868) which provides “Equal Justice Under the Law” and as a whole, marked a large shift in American constitu-

YOUR

Peter Perry tionalism, by applying substantially more constitutional restrictions against the states than had been applied before the Civil War. Within the state of Florida there are 67 county government units and within each there are additional localities that have the power to regulate and govern. Many Florida residents who live in communities such as St. Lucie West, Tradition and PGA Village are subject not only to federal, state, county and city governing bodies but also subject to Community Development Districts (CDD) and Home Owners Associations (HOA) governing bodies. Unfortunately all of these layers add several layers of regulations and costs funded by the taxpayer. The questions most often asked are; why are we spending so much money yet seeing so little being accomplished? How can we reduce government interference and spending while improving

services? Why can’t we develop a balanced budget? The questions are not easily answered since we live in a complex world faced with many challenges. The economic recovery has slowed and greater burdens are being placed on the American family. Almost daily we are faced with a new crisis at every level in our society and yet the elected officials cannot reach a consensus with regard to solving them. More disturbing is the reality that the decisions made do not always reflect the views and needs of the people living in our communities. A former Massachusetts congressman and former U.S. Speaker of the House Tip O’Neil coined the phrase…“all politics is local.” This phrase supposedly encapsulates the principle that a politician’s success is directly tied to his ability to understand and influence the issues of his constituents. Politicians must appeal to the simple, mundane and everyday concerns of those who elect them into office. According to this principle, those personal issues, rather than big and intangible ideas, are often what voters care most about. Although we get to vote in the presidential and congressional election, we seldom see any direct effect of these elections in our daily lives. St. Lucie County is the 21st most populous county in the state of Florida with a population of 293,023 (2013 U.S. Census) and yet there are 17.5 percent of the population living below the U.S. poverty level (U.S. Census 1/4/2014). While Washington claims of U.S. unemployment levels now at 5.1 percent, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity the unemployment rate in our county as of January 2015 was 6.7 percent as compared to the State of Florida at 5.8 percent. St. Lucie County’s budget for 2015-2016 is just short of $472.6 million dollars. This budget included a property tax increase of a little more than 3.4 percent. That does not take into account the additional increases in property values of 4.6 percent. The City of Port St Lucie 20152016 budget provides for $552 million dollars in spending. Even though there are $1.8 million in spending cuts, it also provides for property tax increases. These two budgets represent a combined budget well in excess of $1 billion dollars.

But Congress spends the majority of their efforts in Washington debating world and national issues. I agree that immigration and terrorism are critical matters, but it seems that their conversation is now only directed on the 2016 presidential election. The Supreme Court’s recent decisions seem to have pushed the pendulum of power farther away from the local governing bodies. As a result, we may require greater reliance from our local governing bodies to address our needs within our communities. There are a host of challenges that face local government and St Lucie County in particular: delivering services; lack of finance; managing staff; engaging citizens; forming new partnerships; and dealing with the rapidly evolving technologies and socio-economic demographics. Where will we be in the years to come? Will we continue to see a shift from local government authority and control? Do we continue to depend on the Washington bureaucrats to author policies that we hope will eventually trickle down to improve the living experiences for those of us living in South Florida? Will the private sector have the capacity to fill the economic gaps? Or, is it possible that we can reassert the importance of local government, with new models for regional integration, public finance and programs that can balance budgets while improving the delivery of community services for today and well into the future. Going forward, I hope to provide some ideas and commentary in future issues of Your Voice News & Views that will stimulate a dialogue with our readers and serve to engage the citizens of St. Lucie County. This will serve to develop a sense of ownership and allow our commissioners and council members to fine tune services to our actual needs. TO ADVERTISE (772) 204-2409 Dear Editor: Most people like to wake up in the morning, walk outside, and take a nice deep breath of fresh air to get the day started. Maybe it’s an ocean breeze, or flowers from the garden. But many residents in western Port St. Lucie may soon wake up to the smell of decomposed vegetation and human waste. Yes, human waste. That’s what will happen if St. Lucie’s County commissioners approve the plans to allow CompostUSA to use 189 acres of Becker Holdings property just west of PGA Village to mix vegetation and human waste to form composting materials. The sludge would be allowed to pile up 15 feet high, and with prevailing wind patterns, could affect that morning air, as well as the afternoon and evening air, throughout St. Lucie West and Tradition. There is great concern over the leaching of that human waste into the water supply, and the C-24 canal, which is less than a half mile from the 189 acre Becker facility. In addition, breathing in the

airborne bio-aerosols from human waste can cause eye and throat irritation, breathing difficulties, and other medical issues. CompostUSA is attempting to relocate from Ocala, where it took residents there six years to remove the company, after initial applications to process only wood turned into CompostUSA processing sludge. The nightmare scenario for residents, a legal battle that cost millions of taxpayer dollars, medical complications, and a stink that just wouldn’t quit—could well be heading this way. St. Lucie County commissioners will be voting on this project Dec. 3, 2015, before many residents return for the season, but it seems like many of the affected residents who are currently here are also unaware. A protest rally was scheduled to take place on the County Commissioners offices Nov. 3 p.m. Marisol Guntkowski Editor’s note: If you would like to write in to share your comments on the CompostUSA project email us at news@yourvoiceweekly.com.

The staff had determined that the rezoning of Tradition Commerce Park North at Southern Grove is consistent with “balanced and responsible growth and objective.” The staff also said in a memo to the City Council that the rezoning to master planned unit development would “continue the development of Tradition Master Planned Community of the Strategic Plan”. Tobin said that since the slowdown in development, building has picked up somewhat in Tradition with new homes in some of the communities within Tradition. The most significant commercial development has been the Wawa convenience store and gasoline station, Tobin said. The new rezoning involves land previously zoned St. County agricultural, allowing only one unit per 5 acres. At a City Council meeting, Wes McCurry of Fishkind and Associates, the agent for Tradition Land Company, said the plan for Keiser University is expected to come

He said the rezoning would also facilitate development of industry and office spaces. The timing of rezoning is right because of the industrial boom fueled by growth of the Port of Miami, he said. McCurry indicated that some of that growth may come to this area because of the difficulty industrial prospects have in finding land in South Florida. He also said he’s encouraged by the increase in economic development prospects in St. Lucie County. Last week in an exclusive report, Your Voice Weekly uncovered emails between Textor and Port St. Lucie city officials where Textor attempted to strike a deal to pay off the Digital Domain debt and keep the studios open. The city claimed the offers “lacked credibility” but Textor says he was serious about his offers and could have easily afforded to follow through. “Paying the studio debt’s annual payments would not have been much of a challenge. With $20 million raised to date and another $20 million on the way, a $2.5 million annual payment would be quite manageable,” Textor said. The former studio was recently

ST. LUCIE WEST — Travel may often open doors to new cultures and experiences, but one St. Lucie West couple has spun a worldwide network of friends through a less conventional means of travel: couch surfing. In 2004, a small group of friends launched a website to help connect travelers with local hosts willing to offer up a spare bed or couch free of charge. The site, couchsurfing.com, now serves 10 million members in 200,000 cities around the world. Now, St. Lucie West-based teachers, Jason and Stephanie Agins, say the site has given them lifelong friends in far-reaching corners of the globe, many they would have never met on their own. The Agins were one week into a three-week honeymoon in Europe when they got a feeling that they were missing out on something. “After a week we realized it was just us. We weren’t really connect-

ing with anyone,” said Jason, an American History teacher at International Connections Academy. The couple was headed to Barcelona from Rome, and Jason decided to look into what the couch surfing network had to offer. “It wasn’t so much a way to stay for free, we still stayed in hotels and hostels, but we would go to couch surfing meetups,” Jason said. Couch surfing meetups are organized events that bring couch surfing members together at a local establishment like a bar or coffee shop. “You basically just go there, and all the sudden you’re in a room with people from all over the world, and they all have the same goal of traveling and making friends,” Jason said. Since joining couch surfing five years ago, the Agins have traveled to around 40 countries between the two of them. They have memories of breaking fast for Ramadan with a group on the beach in Casablanca, Morroc-

It’s adoption season on the Treasure Coast FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — November is recognized as National Adoption month. This year, National Adoption Month focuses on the adoption of older youth currently in foster care—because “We Never Outgrow the Need for Family.” This theme calls attention to our nation’s population of older youth in foster care who need loving, permanent families. Compared to their peers, many youth in foster care face higher rates of poor outcomes, such as dropping out of high school, unemployment, and homelessness. Despite these challenges, research on positive youth development confirms that children and youth have the ability to overcome traumatic experiences and thrive in adulthood when they are connected to a strong, permanent support system. All youth need a sense of belonging; through adoption, youth are connected to a family who not only provide a sense of stability, but also help them navigate the complicated landscape of their emerging independence.

During National Adoption Month, prospective adoptive families can learn more about the needs of older youth and opportunities to positively guide them toward successful outcomes. Anyone interested in learning more about adoption is encouraged to join the Children’s Home Society of Florida at our adoption orientation session. The next meeting is scheduled to take place at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 in the Children’s Home Society of Florida office (Room 4) at the Garden City Community Annex, located at 2102 NW Avenue Q in Fort Pierce. This informative, casual and free open house-style orientation will provide an overview of foster care adoption and answer all questions related to adoption and CHS’ adoption process. Please help us raise adoption awareness in our community as we try to find additional permanent “Forever Families” for local children in foster care. To reserve your spot or for more information, contact Children’s Home Society of Florida’s adoption information line at (772) 429-2001.

He was very strongly committed.” Steve later ran his own business and then became mayor of Medford, N.J. “I had shot my mouth off around town about improvements and I was asked to serve on the planning board,” he said. “A year later, they asked me to run for office. Both parties approached me and I had not registered in a party. I won and I thought, ‘Here I am in my first political experience and I find myself as mayor. Only in America. Getting sworn in was such a humble experience.” For Corcoran, that was the most peaceful moment. “It was a terrible political contest,” he said. “It was a change of government. My predecessor had been in office 41 years. There was a lot of interest in the press. As I walked to the dais, I saw ABC, NBC and CBS cameras there. I stepped out and the lights went on. That was my introduction to the political process.” Steve Corcoran served on the council and as mayor for 20 years. Then he decided to hang it up.

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • ST. LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • NOVEMBER 6, 2015• A13 “I retired for a day,” he said. “I got a phone call from a township with challenges. They called me over and I didn’t know it was an interview. We talked into the wee hours and the following morning, they asked me to be township manager. I said, ‘You don’t want me.’” They did. “They wanted someone familiar with blueprints to help build a new municipal complex. The trust they gave me was remarkable. I was asked to complete it on time and on budget. That I did.” After three years, he was ready to move on, but he was asked to stay for another three years. His experience in public safety attracted the attention of FEMA and he worked for the federal government for three years. Then he retired. “Our plan was to spend winters on Hutchinson Island and summers on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.” Steve still wasn’t ready to retire and became a tour boat captain on Squam Lake. Then the Corcoran’s lives changed. Steve was diagnosed with a serious form of rheumatoid arthritis. “New Hampshire is a beautiful state, but it’s not the place for those kinds of challenges,”

COUCH from page A10 PETS OF THE WEEK

Camo

I arrived at the Humane Society through no fault of my own. My owner developed an allergy to me and sadly could not keep me. I can’t wait to find a forever home as I absolutely love being around people. I always go on outside events and I love seeing all the new faces I just wish one would snatch me up. I am housebroken, very playful, and has a knack for giving kisses. All ready to be a perfect companion.

Kaila

I am a really sweet girl who loves just about everything and anything I come across. My life has been one long journey and I hope this holiday season a forever home is waiting for me. I have been at the Humane Society for over a year! I don’t understand why I have been overlooked for so long. I know I maybe a little reserved, but I still have lots of playful energy and quite the purrsonality. Please come give me my long awaited home, I will be a great addition to your family. If you are interested in Camo, Kaila or any of their furry friends please stop by the Humane Society of St. Lucie County’s two locations at 100 Savannah Rd. in Fort Pierce or 8890 NW Glades Cut-off Rd. in Port St. Lucie

co, exploring Prague with couch surfing friends from Turkey, and throwing a New Year’s Eve party on the road that Stephanie says is still the best she has ever been to. The couple currently has plans on the books to visit friends in Russia who will take them zip-lining, another friendship that formed at a couch surfing event. Jason and Stephanie have also served as hosts, previously at their home in Orlando and now at their home in St. Lucie West. “[Hosting] is a great way to see the world and experience the world without leaving your house,” Jason said. It is common, the Agins said, to make an American meal for a guest, and for them to return the favor with a traditional meal from their country or culture. One year, for Halloween, Jason and Stephanie hosted friends from Turkey. “We went out and got costumes, it was like teaching a child about Halloween, they had no clue,” said Stephanie, a teacher at Florida Virtual. “That’s an experience they’re going to take back and share with their friends,” Jason added. Though Jason and Stephanie never bunk with or host an unknown traveler “sight unseen,” according to Jason, many surfers do.

Photo courtesy of Jason Agins Stephanie and Jason join Simo Benziane, Sanae Benz Tabibi, and Rajae from Morocco, Julio Pineiro of Spain, and other travelers from Egypt, Tunisia, France, and Korea to break fast together for Ramadan. It was an experience Jason and Stephanie say they would have never had without their connection to the group through couch surfing. “When I was younger, it started out to save money and be able to travel more,” said Jake Taylor, owner of Mr. T Window Cleaning in Palm City. “Anymore, it’s about the locals showing me around.” Local couch surfing hosts have guided Taylor to the best restaurants in Basque Country, the

best beaches in Nice, France, and the best siteseeing spots across Ireland. Taylor has returned to the same host in Paris twice, who showed him and a friend an off the beaten path restaurant with the best

No one there was speaking English, and there were no other tourists in sight. “It was like one of those restaurants from a movie, just a little joint, where everything is so authentic,” Taylor said. On the hosting front, Taylor likes to lend out bicycles to guests who visit him in Palm City, and direct them to his favorite local restaurants and beaches. He has hosted a nursing student from California who was in town interviewing for a job, and a couple riding their bicycles from Seattle to Key West, among others. While Taylor and the Agins all report great experiences stemming from couch surfing, they understand many people have reservations, especially when it comes to safety. “You have to read people’s ratings and references,” Taylor said. “That’s what you have to go off of, your references and your interactions with people before you let them stay with you or you stay with them.” The site helps protect travelers and hosts alike by offering an extensive ratings and references section so that each party can get an accurate snapshot of the other person’s reputation in the couch surfing community. For Taylor, references have never steered him wrong. When friends and family are

skeptical about Jason and Stephanie’s decision to use the couch surfing platform to meet new friends, Stephanie said she does not allow room for negative comments. “I just show people pictures and explain all the positives before they even have a chance to talk about the negatives,” she said. “One of the things that I’ve learned, having interacted with people from countries that are our friends, countries that hate us, or countries that don’t even allow us in… despite how different we see each other through our cultural lens, everybody wants the same thing,” like a decent job, education for their children, health and happiness, Jason said. “You can meet the people that want to share their culture. At the very least, everyone there is passionate about travel,” Jason said. “Travel is such a big passion of ours, and that’s big enough to build a friendship.” All in all, Jason, Stephanie, and Taylor all agreed their travel experiences have been made richer and their world views have been broadened because of their participation with the couch surfing community. “You can meet the people that want to share their culture. At the very least, everyone is passionate about travel. Travel is such a big passion of ours,” Jason said, “that is big enough to build a friendship.

TREASURE COAST — For most Floridians, the phrase “hurricane season,” whether a source of dread or anticipation, is too commonly heard. Yet it was no humdrum hurricane that, 300 years ago in July, scattered the millions of rare Spanish coins that give the Treasure Coast its name. On the evening of July 30, 1715, a Spanish fleet of 11 ships was returning from Havana when a riotous tempest capsized every ship but one, sending the precious cargo to the deep, just off the coast of Vero Beach. Modern salvaging efforts have continued to spotlight Florida’s Treasure Coast. In the 1960s, Kip Wagner founded Real Eight, the first modern crew to dredge for the fleet, one of whom was famed treasure hunter Mel Fisher, who went on to recover the “Atocha Motherlode” in the Keys, and who is commemorated in Sebastian, with a museum helmed by his

They said they have several ‘dynamic duos.’ We’re excited to be able to give back, to be in the lives of kids in a different way.” Steve echoes his wife’s sentiments. “Sharon has the counseling and children aspect and I spent most of my life in courts,” he said. “We had talked about it for a couple of years. I thought my experience in governmental institutions would be a help. Children need somebody in there pitching for them. For Sharon Corcoran, this is the culmination of a lifetime of good work. “When we retired, we had all these things we’d done. We put them together to find a volunteer opportunity and make a difference. We could work in a familiar field, but with a difference.” She sums up their attitude in a few words. “Retirement is not in the Bible,” she said. Volunteers are needed for the Guardian ad Litem program. Volunteers must be over 21 and have a clear criminal background. No special education is required and training is provided. he said. “There are steps everywhere. Steps are not my friend.” The Corcorans sold their boat and house and moved to Florida. They went to their condo on Hutchinson Island but decided to move to Vitalia. Now that they are in Florida fulltime, they are teaming up to help kids. Both Corcorans are training to work as a team in the Guardian ad Litem program, advocating for children who are abused, neglected or abandoned. “I found out about the GAL program,” Sharon said. “They were looking for volunteers when we were here six months a year. It was something we could do. But it was unfair to do it if we were not here full-time. They’ve already experienced abandonment. It kind of spoke to me. You do more ministry outside the church walls then in them. I stuck it in the back of my head.” One Sunday, when she volunteered at the soup kitchen at Immanuel Lutheran, she met a woman who worked for GAL. The next thing Sharon knew, they’d volunteered for the training. “We had talked about it,” Sharon said. “He has so much legal and business experience and I’ve got the children piece. Quite simply put, it is not true,” exclaimed Mutter. “I refuse to lower my standards to mislead the public and confuse them with those types of ads.” He has had patients go to competitors and try the lower budget hearing aids and come right back to him when they realize that the quality of those aids is very low. They have even expressed hearing worse with those types of hearing aids than without them. “My job is to help folks understand their hearing loss and pick hearing aids they can afford,” said Mutter. All of the hearing aids are custom fit and clients are fully educated on all of their options. Mutter feels patient education is what sets him apart from the competition and he only sells the best products. Mutter’s practice was recognized by Starkey Labs, which is the only American owned and operated hearing aid company in the world. The office received an award for client care, fitting and expertise. Mutter states that in order to be eligible for this award the office must submit to be secret shopped without prior knowledge at any time. This is the sixth Crystal Care Award given to Mutter’s. Mutter added that the utmost honor is when a client is willing to put their name and face to print in a testimonial of how their life has changed because of his help. When his children see those ads it makes him proud. “It is quite humbling to me to have people offer to do anything they can to help me improve my practice by telling others,” said Mutter. When a client comes into his office, sits down and cries because they have been wearing hearing aids for years that have not worked and suddenly they can hear — it is a very moving experience and a rewarding feeling for him. AEROBATICS from page A4 When the local air shows come into the communities that I cover photographically for Your Voice News & Views andVeterans Voice, I immediately start planning the time to be included on their ‘media day’. Flying on media day is a perk of the job that can nullify any effects of the worst day in the last year. This year I drew the John Klatt card. I had met John and pilot counterpart Bill Stein Thursday, Oct. 29 two days before the start of the annual Stuart Air Show,

at the hangar where his two Air National Guard planes sat stationary outside a hangar on the tarmac at Witham Airfield. John Klatt served with the Air National Guard for 20 years in flying combat, air support, and humanitarian missions. Klatt flies a tandem show with a plane similar to his Air National Guard MX-S, an Air National Guard Extra 300L this year flown by veteran aerobatic pilot Bill Stein. In addition to flying tandem with Klatt, Stein was featured in a solo routine during the Stuart Air Show as well.

Since it will be Stein I am flying with he went through all the checklists of safety and nausea that may need to be addressed. Happily, I excelled in both areas where neither, especially the latter, needed to be addressed again. In front of us was a chase plane for two photographers to capture the talented aerobatics of these skilled pilots. I had photographer and retired pilot, Tim Gilmore, working with us from the chase plane.

AEROBATICS from page A24 If I may flash back to last year for a moment, I was the chase plane photographer with our guest columnist Christine Epps sharing her experience to preview the airshow. Having had the vantage point of watching these two planes sky dance above the landmarks of our community last year, clearly was contrasted by flying in front of pilot Bill Stein and just a few feet away from John Klatt as they followed one another to an area over the western part of Martin and St. Lucie counties. The pilots wasted no time bringing the two planes together in formations that put no more than

a few feet of space between the two planes. For the next 20 minutes, I divided my time between trying to photographically depict their talent and at times put my camera in my lap and be part of the moment that they were creating. Through a pair of headsets, I was able to audibly connect to Stein, who described each maneuver they performed, as I watched the separation of land and sky on the horizon spin like a Vegas roulette wheel on steroids. The common denominator for an experience like this is trust. I trust both pilots (with my life) to exhibit their skills in a safe,

grandchildren. While it is unlikely that there is any loose bounty in the St. Lucie river, some salvors speculate there are lucrative wrecks as far south as the FPL power plant on Hutchinson Island. The Urca de Lima, originally of the 1715 fleet, discovered in 1928 by William J. Beach, lies just 200 yards off shore from Jack Island Park in Fort Pierce. A major historical find for St. Lucie County, it became the first Florida Underwater Archaeological Preserve in 1987. Even farther south is another wreck known as the Douglas Beach Wreck and thought to be the missing ship Nuestra Senora de Las Nieves. “These ships didn’t sink,” says Marlin “Buddy” Martin, a local treasure hunter who has a house in St. Lucie West but currently resides in Stuart. “They were struck by a hurricane. They were raked over the reefs and tumbled for several miles, spilling treasure everywhere. That was 300 years ago, and now the stuff’s spread even further.” Exactly how many millions were lost in the 1715 hurricane is unknown. While $14 million pesos in silver reales and golden escudos were registered, the manifests are incomplete. Some

also believe there was as much, if not more, in unregistered contraband. Add to that hundreds of years of discrepant salvaging reports and the wide dispersal of the wreck, and one can begin to picture the difficulty of concluding an estimate. Queen’s Jewell’s LLC, the Sebastian salvaging company that owns exclusive rights over the remaining 1715 treasure, estimates that over $550 million is still on the seafloor, but that is only semi-informed speculation. Martin, with the help of his brother-in-law, operates Hanley-Martin Corporation, a foundation company in Stuart, and this allows him to spend the rest of his time “chasing rainbows” as he calls it. Not every salvor is that fortunate. Many take on investors to offset hefty equipment, permit and crew costs, like Tommy Thompson who earlier this year was apprehended in West Palm Beach by federal agents after eluding his creditors for over two years. Only very few strike it rich in the profession. This past June 17, Eric Schmitt and his family — treasure salvors from Sanford, who come to Fort Pierce every year to hunt — discovered a rare haul of gold coins valued at more than $1 million, one of which was

The breakfast will last about an hour. “At 9 a.m. our program will actually start,” Reed said. “All of our students will be in attendance.” Not just in attendance — the students will be the program. They’ll sing patriotic songs, read poems, and thank veterans for their service. “Our special speaker is going to be Brian Mast,” Reed said. Mast is a candidate for the 18th Congressional District. The Army veteran lost his legs on Sept. 19, 2010, in Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan. “I love the fact that over the past few years I’ve had the opportunity to speak at various elementary, middle and high schools around Veterans Day and Memorial Day,” Mast said. Mast said that he’ll aim his talk to the students taking a page from John F. Kennedy who said, “The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it.” “I’m going to talk about everything veterans do,” Mast said. “I’m going to give a very vivid picture of what it’s like to be a veteran, good and bad.”

Mast is a father with three children. During the program, Barnabas will name its first Veteran of the Year. It aims to do Honoring Our Heroes annually, and always name a Veteran of the Year. The school recently moved into its campus at 1860 S.W. Fountainview Blvd. The new campus allows the school to grow in two phases to 450 students. Last school year it had 115 students. Cynthia Bartal, founder and upper school principal, said in a previous interview that the school aims not only to give children a “strong biblical, Christian education,” but a well-rounded mix of patriotism, fine arts, athletics and college-prep as well. The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 566, Mike Bradley Chapter, Port St. Lucie, sent a color guard for the school’s first day at the new campus. To reinforce its emphasis on patriotism and willingness to serve in uniform, the school is aiming to start a Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program by the beginning of its second semester. Besides the prohibitive cost, 21st century treasure hunters face several other adversities, says Martin. Not only does Tallahassee require 20 percent of all treasure recovered along the Floridian coast, but local and state legislatures also enact unrealistic and in some cases ludicrous provisions against salvors. One such

With heavy competition and embargo from official archaeological projects, heritage foundations, UNESCO, and a host of other entities trying passionately to obviate private treasure salvaging, Buddy Martin’s “rainbows” may soon be a thing of the past. Nonetheless, as long as people continue to recite Florida’s history, the lure of sunken treasure will always play a prominent role.

Musician draws on many influences STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — George Winston has had many musical influences. Growing up in Montana, Mississippi and Florida, he listened to instrumentals in R&B, rock, pop and jazz. When he heard The Doors, he began to play the organ. When he heard the music of Fats Waller, Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson, he switched to piano. His unique style, what he calls folk piano, developed from those influences and others he encountered along the way. Winston has recorded numerous albums, several of which went platinum. His album “Linus & Lucy— The music of Vince Guaraldi,” is a tribute to the jazz musician who wrote the music for the “Peanuts” specials. He has recorded many benefit albums, including “Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions — A Hurricane Relief Benefit,” for victims of Hurricane Katrina. His recording “Forest” won a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. Winston’s latest album, “Spring Carousel — A Cancer Research Benefit,” was released in 2014. He is on tour now and comes to the Emerson Center Nov. 20 with his “Winter Show,” featuring songs that evoke fall and winter. It is

also a benefit concert. Concert-goers are invited to bring a non-perishable canned food donation to benefit the Food Pantry of Indian River County. Proceeds from merchandise sales will also benefit the charity. In a phone interview that covered many topics, George Winston spoke about his inspirations and his art. The musician, who also plays the guitar and harmonica, has often described his music as rural folk piano. “There are three ways I play,” he said. “There’s New Orleans rhythm and blues piano, stride jazz piano and rural, which is melodic, like folk songs. I came up with it in 1971 because I wanted to play slow melodic pieces as well as uptempo. It’s like folk guitar. It’s not classical, not jazz and not blues.” Winston’s surroundings have always influenced his work. “Anywhere I am affects how I play,” he said. “The seasons are so extreme in Montana and any song I play is a season song first. I grew up with extremes. In eastern Montana, there was no TV and the seasons were the entertainment. In winter, you made a snowman, in spring you played baseball, in the summer you went swimming and in fall, you raked leaves.

That was all the entertainment. I listened to music and everything reminded me of the season.” Winston said that The Doors and Fats Waller influenced him because of a common thread. “For the time they were in, they were both influential and outrageous, to say the least. They were rebels. I liked instrumentalist 99.9 percent of the time. I liked the organ and I got albums by bands that had organs. The organ sound drove me crazy, did something to me. “I saw The Doors (album) in the record store. They were not known then. It was the greatest thing I’d ever heard. I had to get an organ and play in a band.” That was fine for four years. “I heard Fats Waller on the piano and that was the greatest thing I ever heard,” he said. “I played the piano for years but I couldn’t be Fats Waller. I got discouraged and quit the piano. Then I heard (famed New Orleans R & B pianist) Dr. Longhair. It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever heard and I said, ‘I think I can do this.’ Then I heard (New Orleans pianist) James Booker. He has a way of playing that’s the way to play the piano.” Winston said that he finally came to terms with himself in his music in 2014.

“It doesn’t usually take 35 years,” he said. “I’m lucky to have had the influences I have.” Winston considers himself an interpreter rather than a composer, although he has written many pieces. “I do put songs together but I never try to,” he said. “It’s like talking about how you learned to walk. Everyone does it their way. The songs just happen. It used to be that one in 10 (songs) stuck. Now it’s nine out of 10 that stay around. If something emerges, I’m OK if it does and OK if it doesn’t. I’m always examining composers. Right now, I’m examining Joni Mitchell again. You never know what she’s going to do.” For the upcoming Emerson Center concert, Winston will play songs that evoke fall and winter. He will also reform works by Vince Guaraldi, another influence. “I’ve always loved his instrumental songs,” Winston said. “I’m a fan of animation and in 1965 I saw a ‘Peanuts’ animation, ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas.’ I heard the song and went insane. There was a soundtrack and I played it. I have (recorded) two volumes of his music and I’m working on a third.” Winston said that his choice of music is often determined by which music translates well into

From a smoky 1920’s Speakeasy to the Bowery of the 1930’s, from a World War II USO to a 1950’s Manhattan supper club, Swinging on a Star perfectly weaves various settings and scenes with some of the most popular songs of a generation. The journey also showcases music from the “Road Movies” starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Songs include: “Road to Morocco,” “Going My Way,” “Moonlight Becomes You,” “Swinging on a Star,” and many more.

Snook Nook Fishing Report

other Nature is finally giving us a break — light winds and calm seas await very anxious anglers this week. This is the best time of year to go catching at the beach. Silver spoons, big top water plugs, diamond jigs — the list goes on and on. Basically, if it’s got some shine to it, throw it. Bluefish, mackerel and big jacks are moving up and down the beach terrorizing whatever baitfish they come across. Find the bait, find the fish. With the turbidity finally settling, get out the 12-foot rods and go chase a few pompano. Fresh bait like clams, sand fleas and also synthetic bait like the Fishbites will all work great. Coming off another full moon, we have some monster tides in the river again; take advantage of these higher tides and hit the west side docks in search of some redfish. Gulp baits, gold spoons, and live shrimp all work great. The east side creeks and mosquito impounds have produced for anglers that were seeking a location out of the wind. The relief bridge on the east side of the Jensen Beach Causeway has been a popular location with a few pompano making a showing on the incoming tide. Yellow and pink jigs bounced with the tide back towards the bridge will also yield a by catch of blue runners, jacks and ladyfish. On days the bite is slower, anglers are tipping jigs with shrimp or clams to add some scent. Offshore conditions are slowly

Fred Caimotto changing in our favor. Dolphins and sailfish are being caught from 120 feet to 300 feet and with our Sailfish Tournament season under way — look for the sport fish boat population to increase considerably over the next few months. With some great weather on its way, hopefully everyone gets out there to enjoy some of the great fishing the Treasure Coast has to offer. Snook Nook opened in 1982 as a family business. Freddie grew up in the business and fishing the Treasure Coast area. Presently, the Snook Nook crew reports on a radio show on WZZR on Saturday morning from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. called The Fishing Report. Nostalgia comes alive ST. LUCIE COUNTY — GorDo Productions, Inc., is adding value to the Port St. Lucie community by bringing in the arts. “The arts! The arts! The arts! This city is growing by leaps and bounds and I intend to ensure that the arts are a big part of this growth,” said Pat Gordon, CEO of GorDo Productions. Gordon is a native of Washington, D.C. and brings countless types of entertainment to Port St. Lucie including concerts, plays, talent shows and possibly even a circus. “Rather than traveling to West Palm (Beach) or Fort Pierce to enjoy a show, I want people to stay right here in their own city, support their own venues, and spend their dollars in this city; while at the same time enjoying a night of entertainment,” said Gordon. Her thought is that this will not only make Port St. Lucie a stronger community, but will also make it a more vibrant city with a myriad of options and opportunities to learn, grow and blossom — to have quality family time. This first ever GorDo Productions show, paying homage to late R&B Megastar, Luther Vandross, features William “Smooth” Wardlaw. “It’s amazing how much he

sounds like Luther! And, before the midway point of the show, you feel that you’re actually attending a Luther Vandross concert,” said Gordon. “Now that’s talent!” In addition to William “Smooth” Wardlaw’s tribute, the show features L.A. Hardy, a professional stand-up comedian most L.A. Hardy known for his appearances on ABC, BET and MTV. Mr. Hardy is the special guest and emcee (master of ceremonies). And, because Gordon believes in giving back to the community, one local act will be showcased — Terrance Yearby (“YURB”), a Fort Pierce native, will sing ‘grown folks’ music.’ The concert is Nov. 14 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35 for general (open) seating and $45 for VIP (assigned) seating, which includes one glass of wine. To purchase your tickets, visit https://www.showclix.com/event/ PSLLUTHERRELIVES. To learn more about GorDo Productions, visit www.gordoproductions.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Walmart awarded 20 teachers from Allapattah Flats K-8 School with $50 reward cards to purchase classroom supplies that will help students as part of the company’s Teacher Rewards program. For the sixth year, Walmart will donate over $4.5 million to provide 90,000 teachers across the United States with reward cards to help offset the cost of classroom expenses at the beginning of the school year. These funds come at a critical time, as many teachers will spend an estimated $1,000 of their own money to ensure their students have the supplies they need to learn throughout the school year. More than 5,000 U.S. Walmart stores, Distribution Centers and Sam’s Club locations are eligible to select one local public school,

grades K-8, and provide reward cards to 20 teachers from each selected school. Winning teachers can use the funds to purchase essential items for their classrooms such as paper, folders, binders, pencils, crayons and markers. “We are proud to honor our community’s teachers, who give time and often their own money to ensure our students have everything they need to be successful throughout the school year,” Daniel Mojica. “At Walmart, we are dedicated to supporting our nation’s teachers by providing support and resources needed to continue educating the future leaders of our community.” The Teacher Rewards program is an extension of Walmart’s ongoing support of local initiatives that help students, teachers and families better prepare for their future including programs like Breakfast in the Classroom, Fill the Bus and Farm to School.

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A partnership between the Port St. Lucie Police Department and local businesses is the latest effort to increase the number of eyes and ears scanning the streets for trouble. It’s the only one of its kind across the Treasure Coast. The program, called PAC (Partners Against Crime) was unveiled at the Oct. 26 city council meeting. Department officials say it will bolster relationships between the police department and public. “Anytime we can improve the service we are providing, (that) helps us achieve our goals for increasing our level of service to the community,” said Port St. Lucie assistant Police Chief Richard Del Toro. The program includes a database that stores important information about all businesses

within the city. The system will be used to keep up-to-date information about the businesses, communicate crime prevention tips and notify the businesses in emergency situations. Once a business signs up for the program, they’ll be visited by an officer to discuss crime and crime prevention and address any safety concerns the business may have. “It’s important because we can increase our direct communication with our businesses. That helps us achieve our goals for continuous improvements,” the assistant chief said. So far, 500 business have signed up and Del Toro says the sign-up potential is limitless. “We can reach 3500 business at a time, all with the push of a button.” Businesses interested in participating can contact Crime Prevention Specialist Stacy Paton at (772) 871-5027.

solo piano. He’d love to play The Doors or Frank Zappa, but they don’t work as well for solo piano. “James Booker is my left hand and Vince Guaraldi my right hand,” he said. When Winston comes on stage for the Emerson concert, he will be in his socks but without shoes. “It’s better to control the pedal,” he said. “There’s less left foot noise. (With the socks) there are no splinters, either. You don’t want to play one-half a show with a splinter in your foot.” This concert will help stock the Indian River County Food Pantry, but Winston has a long history of helping charitable causes. “It started in 1986,” he said. “I figured food was essential. Someone down on his luck could find a place to sleep. But where can

you legally get food? If they can get a meal, they can start picking themselves up.” Cancer research is another of his focuses. The proceeds of his new recording goes to the City of Hope in Los Angeles. “They’re cutting edge,” he said. “I was treated there. There was a piano. I made up 57 songs and they’re the reason the record happened, so it goes to them.” Right now, Winston is enjoying life. He is looking forward to coming to Florida and quotes (composer) John Hartford: “Say wherever I’m at, that’s where I’d better be.” Pianist George Winston comes to the Emerson Center, 1590 27th Ave., Vero Beach, Nov. 20. Tickets are $38-$225. Student balcony seats are $23. To order tickets, call (772) 7785249 or order online at www.the emersoncenter.org.
